[Elecraft] WA3WSJ on AT Today 11/11/2004

2004-11-11 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Seems like I was off with my UTC times- gets me every time. I plan to
start operating around 11am EST or 1600utc and operate for an hour or
two. Then hike the two miles back down the mountain. The tough part is
hiking up! Look for me around the qrp frequencies on 40m and 20m.

Re: [Elecraft] K2: No recieve/power out on 20M thru 10M

2004-11-11 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm

Marc,

What were you using as a signal during the 'cheap and dirty signal tracing'?
If you were using an antenna lead and off the air signals, remember that the
bands have been rather dead the last couple days - and more so on 20 meters
and up in the evenings.

Now that you have done the signal tracing (I assume in receive) and have
determined that everything from D6/D7 to the audio is working, try the
reverse using the RF probe while attempting to transmit at low power (about
2 watts) into a dummy load.

You should see some drop in level from D6/D7 through the bandpass filters,
but sufficient to measure. You can easily do a comparison from band to
band. The output of the pre-driver stage (collector of Q5) is easy to reach
on the top of the RF board - the collector is connected to the case.

It is true that there is nothing in common to all those bands in the
bandpass filters. As a totally wild guess, there might be some failure in
the T/R switch that would convert something to a low pass filter (but that
is a real stretch).
Could it be that your prior efforts misaligned the bandpass filters for
those bands while attempting to align them in receive state? You should be
able to peak the bandpass filter during transmit (TUNE or TUNE/DISPLAY) with
the RF probe on the collector of Q5.
If you can find any peak at all on the bandpass filters, it is likely to be
correct and you can rule out the bandpass filter area as the problem (or
verify that is really where the problem lies).

Well, after following Tom's (N0SS) Cheap 'N Dirty Signal Tracing Guide
it would seem that the problem does fall within the band-pass filter
as injecting a signal at D6 works fine but at W6 hardly anything comes
through for the aforementioned bands. Now I'm even more confused
though as I don't see how one fault can cause issues on 20M-10M, but
leave 30M-160M unaffected. That would leave me to believe that there
are multiple faults in the band-pass filter which while possible,
strikes me as very odd since everything was originally working fine
and the now affected bands all started showing problems at the same
time.

I suggest that one of the few things that could cause such behavior is
the

those bands. The frequencies should be close to those listed in the VCO

Subject: [Elecraft] K2: No recieve/power out on 20M thru 10M

I am the proud owner of K2 #4360. When I first put the unit together
everything checked out smoothly and there were no issues. I have since
 added the KSB2, KIO2, KAT2, K160RX, KNB2, K60XV, and KAF2. No issues
appeared to arise after adding the modules. I had to set the K2 aside
for a month due to other commitments and upon returning to it about a
month ago I noticed I had no power out on any band. A quick check and
replacement of R50 solved this. Except now I noticed that on 20M thru
10M with a slight exception on 15M I still had no power out and also
that even with max AF gain the signal from a connected N-gen was
barely perceptible. 15M is a little different in that I can get a max
power out of 1.5W on that band and receive is also a little better but
not by much. On 160M thru 30M the rig functions perfectly fine. I have
tried re-aligning the bandpass filters multiple times to see if that
was were the problem was but could not resolve the issue. I have spent
hours looking over the rf board with a magnifying glass and a dmm
trying to find a fault or bad solder joint but haven't found anything.
My knowledge in this area is limited and I feel like I've run into a
brick wall with this issue. If there is anyone that has any
 suggestions I eagerly await them.

 Thank You,
 Marc W1RSC

[Elecraft] re: KX1 low power out

2004-11-11 Thread Michael Babineau

Tim Hodges [EMAIL PROTECTED]

From a 12.5V power supply I am seeing just
around 2.5W measured with a scope into a dummy load (as well as other
power meters).

Tim :

I don't believe that this is out of the range of possibilities w.r.t
power out

for a radio that is functioning ok.

What I have found is that 13.8V vs 12.5V makes a difference
in output so I suspect that you are probably getting in excess of 3W
out at 13.8V.

I originally had similar concerns with my rig but finally I concluded
that

a difference of .5 to 1W is almost indiscernible at the receiving end
so I stopped worrying about it and started making QSOs and enjoying
the rig.

I often run my KX1 off of a 10 pack of AA NiMH cells and this gives me
about 13.6V dc when fully charged. This puts me in the 3+ watt range on
all bands except 20M which is usually a bit below 3W.

FW: WG4S: RE: [Elecraft] Anyone know how an MH2 works?

2004-11-11 Thread Dan Barker
Well, the Heil Hospital page is for returning (at $12 or more) for them to
repair. I couldn't find any parts on the site - It says to call them if it's
not listed. Of course, they don't answer (actually, it's been busy for quite
some time).

The RatShack 270-090 sure looks identical. I'll just run that.

Thanks for the voltages. Now I know the old element was toast.

Hi Dan,

You might have a bad mic or mic connector or cable problem.

The electret element in the MH2 draws very little current, so it should not
load the 5V on the AF wire but slightly. I see about 1.7K to 1.5K to ground
between mic pins 1 and 7 on two different MH2 mics I have here.

On my KSB2, P1-5 has 5.0VDC without the MH2 connected, and 4.0VDC with it
plugged in.

Heil handles QC problems with their mics directly. If you need a replacement
MH2, go to his website and fill out the Heil Hospital form and he'll take
care of it asap.

Mine doesn't.

I NEVER use SSB, but I'm sure I tested the MH2 when I built my KPSK2 ssb
adapter.

Anyhow, at pin5 of the KSB2, no mic, I have 5v (10K pull up). With the mic
plugged in, it's 0v. Is that right?

Pulled the mic apart. No shorts, all lines ring out. The element looks to my
DMM to be a dead short. Is that right?

Millampmeter inline with a 11K pull-up and a 9v battery shows .7 ma. Is that
right?

Oh, yes. Whistling into it makes no wiggles on the o'scope.

Re: [Elecraft] 10/12M Low Output Question

2004-11-11 Thread Leigh L Klotz, Jr.
Thank you Eric and Mychael. Unfortunately, I seem to have mistaken the
problem - I have problems at 20M and up (and a different dip at 4MHz).

My T2 looks fine and was already off the board but I raised it a bit
more with the green tuning tool, and re-peaked the 10M L and 12M C.

I have done a full sweep of W and A vs F and found that I have low
output on 20 meters and higher, and an anomaly at the top of 75 meters.

See http://wa5znu.org/log/2004/11/k2-power.html for a graph and table.

I get 10W out for 2A on 14.0MHz and 5.8W out for 1.68A at 14.35, into a
dummy load right at the BNC, as measured by the KAT2. 17M is about the
same but it goes down from there.

The 75M dip could be something else, as the current is high there for
its low output.

I guess my next step is a full-band re-alignment of the BPF followed by
signal tracing with the RF probe as Don recommended on another post.

Leigh.

[Elecraft] 5 turns for T3 in K2 revisited...

2004-11-11 Thread Tom Althoff
I see the current manual instructs the builder to wind 5 turns on T3. I
didn't see any mention of changing from 10 turns to 5 turns in the AtoB mod so
my #1117 still has a 10 turn bi-filar winding.

I'm get 12-18W output on all bands except 160M which is down at 9W. I'm
wondering if rewinding T3 would be an improvement or a waste of time?

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: The Best Laid Plans - Fail!

2004-11-11 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

I left the house this morning at 9:25AM EST and arrived at the Hamburg
Reservoir Parking Lot about 9:50 and started hiking up the steep 2 miles
to Pulpit Rock on the AT. By 11:00AM EST I was looking down over the
valley from Pulpit Rock at an elevation of 1582'. I went over to the
observatory next to the rock and set up my gear.

First problem: I forgot my 20 PVC support rod for the vertical. No
problem, I just grabbed a rock and dig out a small hole in the grass. I
then placed the bottom of my VBWFPA in the hole and supported it with my
HWPS-KIT or guy kit. I then pulled my K1 from the backpack and rolled
out 50' of coax to the antenna.

Second Problem: I tried to connect the PL-259 coax connector to the
coil, but the coil has a BNC connector on it. I looked in my backpack
and antenna case, but no adapter--- GAME OVER!

I packed up the radio gear and Trevor and myself had a nice lunch on the
mountain. He bummed half my lunch off me and drink about .75L of water.
He's such a bum, but I love hiking with him. We then took in the view
again from Pulpit Rock. I noticed the trees below the mid-point on the
mountain still had leaves and color on them, but the trees above that
point were bare. I met a nice woman who was day-hiking alone and we
chatted for about 15 minutes.

After the chat, it was down the mountain and back to the truck. We had a
great time up in the mountains, but I wish I had made a few contacts. It
still was a great day and the weather was beautiful up there. Maybe next
trip I won't forget some needed radio gear- hi!

[Elecraft] How to set up SSB

2004-11-11 Thread Dan Barker
I've just gotten my MH2 working again with a RadioShack 270-090 element. I
have no idea if that's the right part, but it appeared identical to the Heil
part, and the o'scope says about 120 mV p-p when I talk normally (Measured
at pin 5 of the SSB adapter - should be the same as mic connectory pin 1).

Anyhow, I sold my other rig years ago as the K2 was all I appeared to
need. I'm wondering how to deal with on-air reports of horrible audio,
almost unreadable without hearing what I sound like.

Ideas:
 a) Borrow an SSB rig and fix my K2.
 b) Try stuff randomly on the air and hope the other ops give consistent
info.

I'm not sure how much trouble a) would be, but it's most likely the best
way. I wonder what the shipping would be to borrow an extra rig from
someone? Any spares out there?

b) should work, but I have SSBA-1, SSBA-2, SSBC 1:1, SSBC 2:1, SSBC 3:1,
SSBC 4:1, the VFO (how to tune someone whose voice you don't know) and of
course, the BFO.

Varying all of these in an organized way is going to take another receiver
or someone VERY patient on the other end of the aether.

Ideas?

Hey, anyone know of an Internet receiver I can listen through? That might
work. Only thing I could find in the archives is http://www.smeter.net/ and
it's off the air.

receiving the tone of WWW (10MHZ) at the 1k mark, the display on the MP reads
10001000 Hz.
On the K2, using LSB , the display reads .84 and the tone of WWW
(10Mhz) at the 1k mark.

What do I adjust ? If i adjust C22 nothing changes. All other adjustemts I
had no probles.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #4472 new builder question on 4 mhz alighment

2004-11-11 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm

Jerry,

To properly tune WWV to 'zero beat', do the following:
Set the K2 to LSB and adjust the frequecy until the tones transmitted by WWV
occur at 500 or 600 Hz (they alternate each minute). I use Spectrogram with
markers set to 500 and 600 Hz to use as an aid. You can get close by tuning
until the voice announcements sound about right, but I can't seem to get any
closer than about 40 Hz that way - that is why I use Spectrogram. The 1000
Hz tone is transmitted for only one second at the minute interval, the 500
or 600 Hz tones are transmitted for about 45 seconds (except for some silent
minutes).

There is more information on my WWV zero-beating technique and using the
N6KR method to set the reference on my webpage www.qsl.net/w3fpr - look for
the article on K2 dila calibration.

I am trying to adjust the 4 mhz occilator to www at 10 mhz and having a
problem.
I can not follow any of the instuctions for it. I don't know how to
zero beat. I tried all the ways to do it using WWW and my Yaesu MP. Never
had to do this before and the instructions to me do not make sense.

Anyway, I am now using Spectrogram and I have the Yaesu set for Lower SB
and receiving the tone of WWW (10MHZ) at the 1k mark, the display on the
MP reads 10001000 Hz.
On the K2, using LSB , the display reads .84 and the tone of WWW
(10Mhz) at the 1k mark.

What do I adjust ? If i adjust C22 nothing changes. All other
adjustemts I had no probles.

[Elecraft] K2 #04506 is alive and well

2004-11-11 Thread Ron W

Hi,
Am Pleased to announce that K2 # 04506 is all finished and waiting for
it's first contact. ( Later this evening)
The build was done over 4 leasurely days. Everything was present, thanks to
Christine (who packed the modules) and it was a no-hassle build.
It's kinda nice to have a K2 with pristine boards, instead of having odd
components sticking out from the A to B mods that were done on my
original series A K2 ( #2204)(I'll have to leave the lid off for
a while :-)
It never fails to amaze me that such a complex kit can be assembled to
specification by almost anyone. It certainly speaks volumes for the design
team
One thing I tried this build, was using very thin resin cored 60/40 solder
( 0.56mm). It was absolutely marvelous. The flux residue was almost
non-existant, and the amount of control I had over each joint was
fantastic. Apply the iron tip and solder together and start feeding the
solder as the hole fills. Any fillets on joints were small, and over-all it
makes for a very tidy job.

Cheers...Ron ZL1TW

2004-11-11 Thread Masleid, Michael A.
Hi Jerry,

What do I adjust ? If i adjust C22 nothing changes.

C22 and the 4 MHz oscillator is used when you calibrate
the K2. First you set C22 using CAL FCTR, then you run
CAL PLL and CAL FIL so that the MCU can learn about the
BFO and PLL reference oscillator settings by comparing
those to the 4 MHz oscillator.

The rest of the time, C22 and the 4 MHz oscillator is not
used as a reference oscillator, so nothing happens when you
change C22.

You can set C22 using CAL FCTR, but you have to run
CAL PLL and/or CAL FIL again in order to make any
change in tuning.

Re: [Elecraft] 10/12M Low Output Question

2004-11-11 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr.
Following Eric's directions to measure current draw, I realized that I
had low output on all high bands, not just 10/12m.
Using the TX signal tracing procedure in the manual, I isolated the
problem to the TX mixer buffer amplifier, and found it.

Now I have plenty of output on all bands.
Thanks for all the help Eric and Mychael, and for the great
troubleshooting in the manual!

Details for the record:
U9, the TX mixer output buffer, showed approximately unity gain on all
bands.
I wicked and redid the solder joints of U9, to no avail, so I decided to
check the buffer circuit components.

Sure enough, I had neglected to install C150 on the bottom of the board.
I even found the 330pF capacitor in my bag of parts left over, hi hi.

C150 provides the RF coupling to ground for voltage divider in the
feedback loop, thus setting the minus input of the op amp roughly equal
to its output, making it roughly unity RF gain instead of 11:1. I guess
below the middle of 20M or so, the mixer output itself was enough to
drive the output stages.

Leigh.

Thank you very much for your informative advice.

Although I fully apprecipate the great performance of K2, this nice small

interested in multi-function rigs instead of high performance one. I would
just wonder whether there are hams from Mainland China in this reflector who
can advise K2's presence in PRC.

Re: [Elecraft] How to set up SSB

2004-11-11 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm

Dan,

You could try using the microphone direct into a tape recorder if the mic's
response is the primary question.

If you are referring to filter adjustments to match your voice, I think more
emphasis than necessary has been placed on refining the frequency range. If
you have set your FL1 BFO so that the lower frequency -3dB corner of the
SSB passband is at 300 Hz, you will be presenting the best frequency
response for communications use. Some exceptions do occur, but that is not
the norm.

OTOH, if you have questions about overloading and clipping and the effects
of compression on the fidelity of your voice or evaluating the response of
that particular microphone with the K2, listening on a separate receiver is
the best way to answer those questions. Of course, you can trust to another
ham who knows your normal voice and has a receiver adequate to evaluate the
signal - be certain that you are not overloading the receiver if that person
is a local.

As has been mentioned in a prior post, a simple DC receiver can be used to
tell you what your signal sounds like. DC receivers have all filtering done
at audio, and have potential to provide the best fidelity.

at pin 5 of the SSB adapter - should be the same as mic connectory pin 1).

That might
work. Only thing I could find in the archives is http://www.smeter.net/
and

it's off the air.

On the K2, using LSB , the display reads .84 and the tone of WWW
(10Mhz) at the 1k mark.

So far, so good.

What do I adjust ? If i adjust C22 nothing changes. All other adjustemts I
had no probles.

Yes, you have to adjust C22, but nothing will change after you do until you run
CAL PLL, then CAL FIL again. C22 affects the 4 MHz timing for the control
processor, which handles the frequency counter function. When you do a CAL PLL
and CAL FIL, the frequency counter is measuring VCO and BFO frequencies and
storing the settings in a lookup table. From then on the table is used.
Adjusting C22 without then running CAL PLL or CAL FIL doesn't do anything
useful.

Following the instructions below will get you very close. This is from a year
old post by Wayne. In my experience, you actually want the VCO set about 10 Hz
lower than the BFO to the most accurate readings.

Here's the procedure. It requires revision 2.XX firmware, and assumes you have
already done Alignment and Test, Part II, at some point. The K2 should also be
allowed to come up to room temperature.

1.Tune in a signal at a known frequency. Use one that's at an *exact* kHz
boundary, so you can easily see when the VCO and BFO readings match in step 2.
(I use WWV at 10, 15, or 20 MHz.) Use USB or LSB mode rather than CW, so that
there will be no CW receive offset. In the case of a K2 I was calibrating, the
VFO read 1.17 when the signal was tuned in perfectly. If it had read
1.00, no further improvement would have been possible.

TIP: Zero-beat the carrier precisely, or listen to a voice signal and adjust
the VFO for the best quality. The more accurately you tune in the signal, the
more accurately you'll be able to set C22, below.

2. Run CAL FCTR. Now alternately move the K2's internal counter probe between
TP1 (VCO) and TP2 (BFO), adjusting C22 in small increments until the kHz and
Hz digits at the two test points match as closely as possible. In my case, the
two readings matched at 14913.60 and 4913.60. The difference is exactly
1.00--the frequency of the on-air signal.

3. Put the counter probe on TP1 (VCO), switch to 40 meters, and run CAL PLL.

4. Put the probe on TP2 (BFO) and run CAL FIL. For each operating mode, vary
each filter (or BFO) setting up 1 count, then back down, to force the K2 to
take a new BFO measurement for each and store it in EEPROM.

The VFO dial should now be very well calibrated.

[Elecraft] listening to yourself

2004-11-11 Thread Steve Jackson
WG4S mentioned a dilemma I have had many times over
the years. Even with readily available receivers, I
can't really judge how I sound to myself locally all
that well. I always want to hear myself over an RF
link. I can always hear artifacts of keying or 'phone
adjustments better when there's a few miles of tropo
path ... no, I don't know why.

The best way I've found is to simply ask a local ham
to listen for me on 80/75 or 10 groundwave, depending
on the time of day.

In the case of WG4S, there are 22 other listed hams
just in his town alone! so, doing this should be a
snap for him. Call one, and set up a time so that
either the transmissions can be recorded or, even
better, simply have the other guy (or gal) hold their
telephone up to the speaker! Members in our local
club do this sort of thing regularly. In fact, lately
we've been meeting in the evenings on 28.170 with slow
CW for the newbies who want to just improve their
code. Nice, quiet groundwave on an otherwise dead
band is great for this!

[Elecraft] crystals and radio names

On another note, what is in a name? The K2 is named

If there is to be another Elecraft radio, such as the

make someday, perhaps it can be named the McKinley
or, better, the Mitchell after the respective
mountains. Or, maybe after a great lake, say, the
Huron. Why a large body of water? Because the rig
should have a great *sound.*

groan Okay. I apologize for that.

P.S. Where did Nils go? The old timers here on the
