Re: [Elecraft] KDSP2's Primary Menu - K2 s/n 549

2004-11-17 Thread Lyle Johnson

What does E13.1 mean? Where can I get a listing of the error codes?

The AFIL seems to work fine. Help.

Not an error code. 13.1 is the supply voltage and 0.40 is the current.

However, you should get that on the second tap and the DSP information
on the first tap. A third tap should return you to the frequency
display.

This tends to indicate that the K2 doesn't think the KDSP2 is installed.
Since you did a complete firmware update, be sure you drill down to
the K2's real time clock menu item and turn it on.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 C83

2004-11-17 Thread John, KI6WX
Brian;
When we built the original KPA100 prototypes, the optimum value of this
capacitor was not known. If you make it larger, the amp draws more current
on 10 meters but is more stable. With smaller values, you get better
efficiency on 10 meters but it is more prone to spurious oscillations. It
is a lot easier to remove the capacitor when it is soldered directly to the
pads, so the instructions were changed to solder it to the pads.

The original prototypes and earlier production KPA100's used 1200pF.
Experiments showed that the value could be reduced without problems. My
KPA100 has run for a long time with the value at 820pF. It was eventually
decided that 1000pF was reasonable, so the production kits were changed to
this value and updates sent out to the earlier KPA100 builders. Today, the
part could be mounted in the holes without any problems.

RE: [Elecraft] Internal AAA batteries for KX1?

2004-11-17 Thread Steve
How about reducing the depth of the stock KX1 cabinet to a minimum, such
that no batteries fit. Then engineering a "piggy back" case to fit (snap,
plug, clip,...) on the back of the KX1 that truly seperates batteries from
the radio electronics? This could be made an option, perhaps with AA or AAA
cells, or even some exotic Li Ion flat pack, or?...

This way you could use the "internal" batteries, or leave the battery
pack/case at home and use external power via connector.

Just my $0.02 worth...

Peter,

Did you check the other bands or only 80 meters? If not try the others. I had
the same problem on 80 and 40 meters and I cheched the rest and they were
below 8 volts. I then adjusted L30 on the (i think 17 meters) that was below
8 volts and I could see the voltage change on R30. I continued to adjust L30
for a lower voltage on 17meters. I switched back to 80/40 and finally it went
below 8 volts.
The voltage on R30 will stay at 8 volts until you reach a point and it will
lower. Just switch back and forth until you see it change.

Good luck,

[Elecraft] Weller WTCPT magnetized tip

2004-11-17 Thread Jeremiah McCarthy
IMHO, it is unlikely that the tip has become magnetized...If that were
possible, it would become magnetized by the magnet inside the heater that is
the operational heart of this soldering station...I think it is more likely
that the magnetic plunger, which activates the temperature switch, has become
stuck, or that the return spring has broken...This can easily be checked by
removing the tip while the iron is cold and pushing on the plunger up inside
the heater with a small screw driver...It should easily move up about 1/2 inch
and spring back down when the pressure is released...

Bryan,

This is a residual step left over from the old days when CAL PLL was to be

you attempt it on 160.

Simply skip that step in the K160RX instructions and all will be well.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: Alignment and Test, Part II

2004-11-17 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm

Peter,

For your BFO problem.

Look at Q9 and Q10 (MPS5179) on the control board. If they are colored
blue, they may be weak - Elecraft will replace them with the black ones. In
the meantime, 2Ns may be substituted. The signal level at TP2 is much
lower than at TP3. Your probe must work since you were able to measure the
PLL/VCO frequencies at TP1 and TP3.

If I recall, you have a 'scope (if not, use an RF Probe) - you should see
0.025 to 0.070 volts RMS at TP2 (K2 menu must be in CAL FCTR or no rf
voltage will be seen). On your 'scope this will be 70 mv to 197 mv peak to
peak.

If you have OK RF voltage on TP2, all should be good, but if not, check the
level at U11 pin 6, that should be 0.20 to 0.70 Vrms (0.56 to 1.98 Vp-p).

Since your external counter shows the correct BFO frequency, I suspect Q9
and Q10 on the control board.

The internal frequency counter work, i have calibrated on TP3 with an
externel counter.
But on TP2 (BFO) i read only nonsens on the Display. My external counter
reads the correct frequency at TP3.

Maybe the level at TP3 is low or i have a problem with the RF-Probe.

See Elecraft Builders Alert #21, October 19, 2004.

The frequency counter input transistors Q9, Q10, 2N5179 on the K2 Control

what you have on the BFO TP2 which has a lower RF level than TP1 or TP3
consequently can cause randow readings.

Was discussed a few days back.

Re: [Elecraft] Alignment and Test, Part II

2004-11-17 Thread G3VVT
Hi Peter,

The significant voltage could be the PLL chip PDOUT, U4 pin13. Check for
shorts on this pin that would give a zero reading. Not sure if the PLL chip
itself would support such a low voltage whilst working normally. Have seen
reported of odd effects with RFC15 the DC feed to the PLL chip U4 pin16, so
check
for actual DC continuity with this component.

What you do not appear to state and this is very important, is the VCO
oscillating or not?.

Checks with the K2 frequency counter at TP1 would at least help as an
initial test. The frequency read depends on the band in use and reference to
the
table at the beginning of Appendix B gives the range of VCO frequencies to be
expected. Tests with the RF probe/DMM at TP1 should give a reading between
600mV and 750mV according to the Elecraft trouble shooting guide.

Do you have an O'scope? It appears that you have no input to Pin 4 if
U4 which is the output of the VFO that mixes in the Synthesizer. With
a scope you could trace back to see where the signal stops. Look at
Pin 6 of U3 and Pin 3 of U3. The synthesizer is not in a locked
condition so that means that the chip is not getting one of the
required signals. Since the Ref Osc is ok and has the proper range I
thing the problem lies in the VFO or Buffer circuit or maybe even the
VFO ALC circuit.

Hi Jack,
With my limited knowledge from scratch building an rs232 interface, I
thought it might be better for the interface in the K2 to be outside the rig
for isolation purposes. I thought the farther away it was from the xcvr the
better things might be. However, you have shown me that I was talking about
a different type of problem with regard to the optoisolators. My plans are:
1)to update my K2 #402, 2)add a KIO2, 3)do some digital QSOs with CAT
control, 4)eventually add the KPA100 inside the K2 enclosure, and eventually
5)remote the KPA100 and a KA100 in an EC2 enclosure.

Which brings up another question. Is the remote KPA100 option approved by
Elecraft? I see that people have done this, but I haven't found any actual
Elecraft documentation on it.

Re: [Elecraft] Internal AAA batteries for KX1?

2004-11-17 Thread Tim O'Rourke
FWIW
I use Lithium Ion batteries in RC planes and I also use them with the KX1, K1
and other rigs. However I do not use them in the rig, I have seen too many
battery failures over the years (30) to trust charging in the rig. I do have
several 3 cell (11.5) volt flat cell packs I use as external source. I like
this as I can change packs on the fly and charge them away from rig. As an
example a 3 cell flat pack with a rating of 3500 mah is about the size of an 8
cell AA flat pack but thinner and about 1/3 of the weight. They do require a
charger that is made specifically for Lithium Ion packs. I carry 2 of these in
back pack and get many hours of op time before needing recharged.

I have a rechargeable lithium CR-V3 battery for my digital camera-it is 3V
nominal, and the same size as 2 AAs smushed together side-by-side. The 3+3
cell arrangement in the KX1 precludes using these, but I wonder if someone
is going to come out with a rechargeable lithium AA-or do they already
exist?

I saw a posting yesterday on QRP-L where someone saw AAA Lithium batteries
for sale so I went to the Energizer.com site and sure enough it looks like
Eveready is now manufacturing a 1250 mah AAA Lithium cell.

This got me to thinking about how great it would be if Elecraft offered
an alternative bottom cover for the KX1 that had 2 X 4 AAA holders giving
12+ V instead of 10V with the 2 X 3 AAs.

Mike,

There is a design problem in this circuit, IMHO, which has to do with
tolerances, and I am having an off list discussion about it. Nothing
serious, and I am sure that it can be fixed easily. I'm letting you know so
that you don't damage anything by too much poking around in K2. The 3.78
volts that you read at U2 pin 5 is 0.053 volts higher, I figure, than you
should get with the 7.8 volts from the 8v regulator, if the RP6 resistors
are 5100 ohms +- zero!! Three terminal voltage regulators also have
tolerance specs on voltage output as measured at the regulator output
terminal, so 8.000 volts is not a sacred cow.

I had exactly the same sort of problems, slightly different voltages. But K2
was VERY useable with AGC on, but not quite up to full sensitivity being a
little bit "AGC limited".
