[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for November 29, 2004
Hello All, 20 meters was fun and 40 meters was a bit of trouble this evening. 20 meters started with me sitting on frequency listening to the testers madly sending code. Could not help myself so I exchanged info with N0IJ. My one official contest contact during the 48 hour period. I listened quite a bit but he sounded so plaintive in the last few seconds of the contest I just couldn't help myself :) Then the band went quiet except for a few dits here and there. "Well", says I, "it's showtime". And commenced calling the net. The list for 20 meters on 14050 kHz: KI8JM - Bob - OH - K2 - 3630 W0NTA - Dick - CO - K2 - 1787 W6LX - Al - CA - K2 - 3674 K6DGW - Fred - CA - K2 - 4398 WA7BOC - Roger - WA - K2 - 755 WU5X - Jim - AR - K2 - 3440 K2HYD - Ray - VA - KX1 - 608 WA2SI - Bert - NY - Ten Tec Argonaut AA3WF - Mychael - PA - K2 - 1025 N7GMT - Trent - UT - K2 - 3927 Wie geht es Ihnen? WA7SPY - Glenn - CA - K2 - 323 W0QQS - Bruce - MN - K2 - 3646 Then on 40 meters we had a few tuners, a few PACTOR stations, QSB, and just plain weak signals. I thought I had someone early on but just could not drag him out. Then with the help of Dan down in GA we got him. Checking my notes I find I got his call correct but in two parts. First the 4OW and then the KR?W? Close but not quite. But then he's all the way over in Florida so that is not too bad. Then I dug for the last one thinking it was in Washington or Oregon because it was so tough. No again, it was in Hawaii. But it was fun trying. There were times I was sure I was hearing something more but I may have been imagining it too. Much like those contesters at hour 45 or so hearing DX out of pure static :) On 7045 kHz: W0CZ - Ken - ND - K2 - 1031 WG4S - Dan - GA - K2 - 2456 Thanks for the QSP Dan! KR4OW - Dave - FL - K2 - 4320 WA2SI - Bert - NY - Ten Tec Argonaut NH7D - Ben - HI - ?? - ?? Just could not dig more than a call sign out of this one. Sorry Ben. KIO2 simplex? To whom it may concern. Elecraft K2 #4487 with all options except the KPA100 and internal battery is now up and running flawlessly, except for the KIO2 option. Connected to a computer running Hyperterminal (Win XP Pro - all updates) I can send the test message from the K2 to my computer which immediately pops up in the window, but no software will talk to the K2 (or so it seems.) Hyperterminal are not able to get through to the KIO2 - just the other way arround. All wires are checked for misplacement and all measurements seems ok. Any advice? Strange that the KIO2 will talk to my computer, but the K2 will not take any orders from ANY computer (I have tried several.), I have checked the diodes.. Everything else works great on my K2. - Which also counts for my K1 #1905. ( That is driven by a K2 naturally!) I am satisfied that it has more than sufficient accuracy for me. I bought the assembled unit, not the kit as I didn't want to assemble another unit. It works great, is not expensive and it is accurate. It also has a nice rezero feature to take out residual inductance or capacitance from test leads. I checked it against several precision capacitors and one precision inductor that I have. It reads within 1%. Re: [Elecraft] C W question/Cut numbers
As I understand it, cut numbers are only used where there's no ambiguity. There is certainly ambiguity possible in callsigns, and I don't think anyone has advocated using cut numbers there. And suggesting that is obfuscating the issue. But when giving a signal report or sending the zone as part of an simple contest exchange, cut numbers are certainly appropriate. And any CW operator should be aware of them. Complaining about it is like complaining about words not being spelled out fully and properly when having a ragchew or even spelling and grammar flames on net postings. 73, doug Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2004 11:29:58 -0800 From: "Leigh L Klotz, Jr." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The ID question is interesting. I know that CW holds a special place, but there is no out-of-mode ID requirement for digital modes such as PSK, as long as the modulation is publicly described. CW is a digital mode no matter whether it is Morse or International Morse or Japanese Kana Code, ergo there *ought* to be no CW ID requirement for "International Morse with T instead of 0" as long as there is no intent to obscure communications, merely to facilitate it. Ought to, but I doubt that OOs will see it that way because of the strong position of International Morse Code for CW. And I suspect the FCC would not like to have us bring them such problems either. I read recently that a VLF station in Russia UT0 something received permission to use the long T instead of the 0 for QRSS. KXBill wrote: The practice of cut numbers dates back to WW2, maybe further. After that, it was a common practice on commercial circuits. - I've held a commercial CW license since the 1950's. While I wasn't working as a commercial CW op all the years since, I do have experience with army, marine and aircraft CW operations and have listened to the traffic on those bands over the years. I sure never heard the use of such abbreviations used on any of those circuits. In both services it was absolutely mandatory to ensure 100% perfect copy of messages, and non-standard characters were carefully avoided. What was carried forth into radio usage was the old land Morse symbol for zero, which is a l-o-n-g dash. Lots of Hams and a few commercial operators have used that since the earliest days. Since modern keyers won't make the proper long dash, I have noticed many (most?) Hams simply substitute a "T" for a zero. That's FB if there's context for it such as PWR HR 1TT WATTS, just as RST 5NN is pretty clearly 599. Still, I'd have been in deep doo-doo if I had tried to use that sort of thing on the Army nets, and while I occasionally heard it from a shipboard operator on the marine bands I never used it there. I'd bet if you asked the FCC if it was legal to use "cut numbers" for your call sign you'd find that you are asking for a citation for failing to identify properly. Some military and government circuits in which the same ops were on watch at the same times and only passed traffic between themselves or between a regular consistent small group of ops may have developed some special usages. Those are also the exceptions who often became speed demons running at 30 or 40 wpm. But they were a very exclusive and small club. It's possible that some of them developed special characters, but they were definitely not "normal" commercial usage. The marine bands and the bulk of the commercial circuits were very careful to use only standard international Morse for maximum efficiency. Requests for "fills" cause delays many times longer than the time lost using standard characters, just as we were careful to work at the speed of the slowest operator. On commercial merchant marine frequencies and on the army nets we seldom got over 20 wpm, and very often had to follow a shipboard operator on a straight key at 10 or 15 wpm. After all, back then we had to *communicate* by CW. We couldn't log onto the internet and search the databases to figure out what the op meant by a call sign sent using a strange assortment of dits and dahs that didn't fit any known call sign format. We had to stop everything and ask for fills if the op didn't know enough to do it "right". [Elecraft] C W question/Cut numbers
The practice of cut numbers dates back to WW2, maybe further. After that, it was a common practice on commercial circuits. But for some reason, I don't believe it was not picked up by the amateur community until much later, say the 80's or 90"s? The dah component was elongated, such as Daaah Dit =9; Daaah=0 or Dit Daaah for a 5, which emphasized it as a number when sending mixed alpha numeric code groups, such as V5FN9, and sometimes with numeric groups, where as a normal A (5) or N (9) would suffice. It may have been the operators call which to use. When using the Bug or a Keyer in Simi-Auto, I occasionally slip up and send a long N for a 9 in the signal report. Guess that dates me. [Elecraft] K2: Adjusting CW filter for SSB reception
I'm using Tom Hammond's latest Spectrogram document for aligning the CW filters for SSB reception (I have the SSB module, but I've got a few things to build before I get around to it). I've selected the Elecraft recommended bandwidths (2.2, 2.0, 1.8, and 1.6 kHz) for SSB reception. I find that at 2.2 and 2.0 kHz (LSB for example), the right (high frequency) side of the trace kind of continues (does not come back down to the base line) even when the left (low frequency) side of the trace is brought down around 300 Hz. At 1.8 and 1.6 kHz, the right (high frequency) side of the trace comes down to the base line as I would expect. As Tom Hammond's 2.4 kHz and 2.1 kHz traces also seem to show this phenomenon to a degree, I assume it is normal (it is just a bit more pronounced in my traces). It appears that, at least on LSB, the CW filter's upper skirt becomes somewhat less well defined at wider bandwidths. Is this the case? [Elecraft] home brew ladder line hint.
Our fearless NCS, Kevin, wrote: I wandered into Home Depot this evening and purchased a bit of 14 guage wire. I will try to get a loop up for 160 which should tune quite nicely for the higher bands. Now to get some ladder line from HRO this coming week and get it hooked up. This prompts me to offer a hint for home-brewing ladder line from stuff readily available at Homely Depot - nice project for a rainy day. First, buy a spool of 18 ga stranded copper wire. When I bought mine about year and a half ago it was $14 for a 500 ft spool (given inflation, your results may vary), enough for mucho ladder lines, attic loop antennae, etc (it's a bit flimsy for outdoor dipoles under tension, but great for ladder line or attic antennas. Next, buy some packs of electrical cable staples - these come in a variety of sizes (you want the ones designed to hold 3/4 inch cable. They consist of a plastic saddle that goes over the cable, plus two nails in holes that are about 7/8 inch apart. The nails are easily pulled out with pliers (and as a side bonus you will end up with a good supply of little nails for hanging pictures or whatever) and the resulting hole is just right for easily threading the 18 ga wire thru. If you don't already have a hot-melt glue gun, buy one of these, too, and in any case buy some glue sticks to fuel it with. Thread the 18 ga wire thru the holes in the staple saddles, give a little squirt with the hot-melt glue to hold it, and voila, you have your ladder line. It's what I'm using on my windom and has held up very well. Credit goes to Mike K3MT for introducing this method to me. 73 Ray K2HYD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. With no microphone connected and the POWER control fully ACW their is no received audio out of the speaker. Therefore one would think that the K2 is stuck on transmit. If I power my K2 OFF then ON sometimes I can get the same problem, but more often than not the problem goes away. Because of the very intermittent nature of the fault it will be really difficult to track down. PTT operation always works fine. My gut feeling is that it is a firmware problem, with possibly something not always getting intialised properly. 'A' is the shortened form for '1' on CW, Dan. People who send 5NN instead of 599 understand all the shortened CW figures (I think!). 73 de David G4DMP In a recent message, Dan Barker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> said Does A4 mean 14 in Spanish? [Elecraft] one-microphone question
Someone posted about getting a new mic as a gift, and the desire to make the one mic operate across several rigs. This is actually quite "do-able" if you're handy and wish to make an adapter as mentioned. I've done this and was very happy with the results. I used an inexpensive small enclosure for the adapter, into which I installed a female Foster 8-pin jack, and then a short pigtail with the rig's matching plug on the end. The mic was set up to work 'directly' with an Icom rig, and pluged into the Foster jack. Because the Icom mics often have higher output levels than other radios need, it was easier to drop the levels resistively than to boost them! Besides, I'm a long-time Icom fan. The audio levels, pinout, connector differences, and etc., are made to be compatible with the other radios simply by changing the adapter box. In most cases I also added external PTT capability (phono jack for contact closure) and even an map-illumination LED (a-la KX1) in one situation where I could source the extra 12 mA. I happen to be a local area networking 'guru' of sorts so I have the needed pro-grade tools to work with RJ-45 type connectors. If you don't have such, fear not: a few dollars will get you a stranded-conductor, all-8-wire available RJ-45 patch cord. Cut into two, it's good for a set of adapters to newer rigs that use the modular connector instead of the Foster jack (as used on the K2). One more thing: Heil sells (via places like Universal Radio) a new Foster male connector that is *very* nice. You can buy a pair for $8 or so, which is a good price. The cable clamp has two 'jaws' one for the "Heilwire" or other conventional cable, and a second, smaller jaw for an auxiliary wire such as a footswitch or PSK31 interface. I recommend checking this out, along with the 'Heilwire' itself which is a little pricey if examined only on a per-foot basis, but I have found none better, ever. The K2 is very easy to interface with, and so is the IC-703. You'll need to work on figuring out the 'pinning' for any other radios. __ Do you Yahoo!? Take Yahoo! Mail with you! Hi Dan, "A4" is just a truncated-elements form of "14". Below is G0UKB's succinct explanation from a posting to our reflector on Nov. 7th, 2001. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * It is becoming more common for operators, in an effort to minimize ANY unnecessary effort, to use "cut numbers". Cut numbers are abbreviated forms of the number, expressed as LETTERS: 0 = T 1 = A 2 = U 9 = N Generally all the other numbers are send as numbers, but "5NN T4" means "599 04". The cut numbers for zero and 9 will be the most frequently used. However, in contests where the exchange is RST and POWER, you will often hear a station send "5NN ATT" for "599 100", or even "5NN TTT" or "5NN K" for "599 1000". * * * www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] another successful Elecraft kit build
Yesterday I put in-line my new KAT100 autotuner. This event marks yet another "works 100% the first time" Elecraft kit. In fact, except for a single resistor I installed incorrectly in 1999, *ALL* of my Elecraft kits have come up, first-time, 100%. Recently I saw a thread about kitbuilding concerns. While I understand that for some there might be initial trepidation, I can honestly say that Elecraft kits don't warrant any undue anxiety! If you can read and can solder, you can build Elecraft kits. And, BOY do they work GREAT once all the parts are assembled! This ATU is _very_ nice, and I own or have owned several LDG and SGC relay-step-matrix type autocouplers, so I can make a fair comparison. I hope that Eric and Wayne decide to 'repackage' this tuner kit for the general ham population, as was mentioned a while back. The resulting profits can then fund more kit development for the rest of us! ;-) With the addition of the KAT100 to my shack, I now have no more Elecrafts to build. [Elecraft] electronic history a ham's delight, directional's
thanks everyone for the feed back on finding the right radio directional equipment instead of just opting out for something totally modern like a GPS or something. I know searching and recording or building ancient receivers (or trans-ceivers?) are completely out of time sync, but we are the Ham's of the universe, we all use equipment that could easily be eliminated by newer and more efficient digital equipment but we all hang in there enjoying this unique hobby, it is exciting. Last year I built a one tube battery radio, it got extremely hot, extremely power hungry, it ate the batteries alive. its selectivity was terrible, but just for fun I built it and turned it to a baseball game. And wondered how Dad would have felt listening to the game. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Ron You hit it on the button (sic) do not know how it got changed but that worked. Now I do not need another rig in shack on to hear side tone. Tnx a bunch. Tim W4YN From: "Ron D'Eau Claire" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Tim, you've probably been bit by the by the "sidetone source" demon. Go into the menu, choose Sidetone Level "STL". Press MENU to enable the sidetone level adjustment, the tap DISPLAY. That changes where the K2 looks for the sidetone from the controller, which changed a few firmware revs back so it has to be selectable. But if you accidentally tap DISPLAY while leaving the level menu, you disable the sidetone in the process! That's the "sidetone source" demon laughing if you listen very carefully when you should be hearing the tone... But aren't. Hope that did it!
