[Elecraft] OT-well sort of:Short Wave Receivers...Suggestions???

2004-12-13 Thread Trev - K6ESE
Hi Gang,

I'm thinking of buying a short wave receiver like a Grundig or something,
and have been looking at them on the web. What I have in mind is a very
small, pocket sized rig, 2 AA cells for power...

Now, I have found a couple of models, but they don't have a BFO for CW, and
don't do SSB either, AM only. Now, I'd like to find one that does it all
from 100 KHz to 30 MHz...any suggestions...

Been working on the R-390A. The First Mixer died (6C4), so decided to go
through the entire rig this weekend and replace all of the known problem
components. Turned out great! Anyway, I really enjoyed listening to the BBC
World Service among other stations while I was letting the rig burn in
today. I had forgotten how much I used to like to listen to SW
Stations...Plus, you get a different perspective on World events and such,
so that's why I'm looking for a portable. Would be nice to have all the
modes though...Might be Pie in the Sky, but maybe not...Seems like a good
idea for an Elecraft product! A portable general coverage (100KHz-30MHz)
receiver with R-390A performance in your pocket ;-) Come on Wayne...

Hi, Trev-

For the past two years I have been using a Sony ICF-SW7600GR for all my
general coverage needs. It won't fit into my pants pocket, but is perfect
for a coat-sized pocket. I take it on walks daily. For power it takes 4 AA
batteries or will accept a 6vdc source. It has a BFO, AM Sync, RF
attenuator, and more memory than I can use. Works FB.

With could be a problem in how you want to power the radio.

Most of the digital radios that will cover the frequencies and have the
facilities you require are greedy on battery consumption or at least were up to
 a
few years back. I lived in Saudi Arabia for 20+ years and SW radio for the
last 13 years was the prime way of getting news. Lived in an area where the
nearest black top road was 100km away and no terrestial television, electric
power or telephones outside our camp. We did not get any satellite TV until
the
mid 1990's, so SW radio was the only way of keeping track of the outside
world.

I started with a Sony 2001 in 1981 and that was still OK when I retired in
2002. Also had the later 2001D which also has the SSB/CW facilities you need,
though again greedy on battery consumption, which meant use on a AC power
supply was essential. A popular radio was the Sony 7600D used by many expats
at
the time which was somewhat better in terms of battery life. Lost track of
what is available today, but for SSB/CW use Sony was always at the top of the
pile in the past.

Maybe the battery consumption problem has been cracked with more recent
technology, but the only way at that time was for reasonable battery life was
to
use an analog radio and most of these did not have the SSB/CW features nor the
 frequency coverage required.

[Elecraft] pocket portable swl reciever

2004-12-13 Thread rckchp
Hello Trev,

In the past I've also suggested Elecraft produce a General Coverage shortwave
reciever kimaybe someday they will.

In the meantime I've aquired a Degen 1102 (matches my K2 serial number, 1102).
Read my (and other) product reviews on eham.net.
(http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/4226). It is almost full coverage, starts
at 3 mhz and goes up to 30 mhz (plus 70 - 108 mhz FM) so no coverage of 160m
and/or no coverage below the am broadcast band. Other than that it is a great
little radio for the price (approx $62 including shipping from China), the
least expensive SSB capable radio I know of. I got mine here :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=15051item=5737941199rd=1
If the link doesn't work just search Degen on ebay.

If you must have 150khz to 30 mhz (with SSB) then the Grundig YB400 is a good
choice, although not really pocket size and is a battery hog. I have a YB400
and an 1102 and find I rarely use the YB400 since getting the 1102, which is
smaller, lighter than YB400, and uses only 3 AAs (1102 comes with 3 NI-MH
rechargeables and wall wart charger) The charging circuit built into the radio
automatically tapers charge rate as necessary. And so far, anything I can hear
with the YB400, I can hear with the 1102. A remarkable little radio

[Elecraft] OT: Noise Reduction?

2004-12-13 Thread Martin
Hello elecrafters,
i am looking for a device to reduce/eliminate the noise of a 2m ssb-receiver.

What the circuit should do: Reduce (or eliminate) the noise of the rx
when no signal is present, like a squelch, but much faster.

It should be an analog device, not a dsp-device.
It should be external ( e.g. input from the receiverŽs headphone
jack).

Background: A friend of mine runs a transponder 144Mhz ssb - 432Mhz
fm.
The fun with ssb input and fm output is that 2 or more persons
can have a conference like on the telephone. There is no
interference (whistles when 2 signals present) like on fm , because there is no
carrier in ssb.

We would like to eliminate or reduce the noise in the pauses.
I heard that musicians use a so called ŽnoisegateŽ, but could not find
any circuit on the web.

Any ideas anyone?
Lyle Johnson?

Trev,

There is a good site for researching such things at Radio Nederland

http://www2.rnw.nl/rnw/en/features/media/productreviews/rx_index.html

I'm not sure there is one that meets your small need and does SSB/CW.
I travel overseas with a Sony ICF-SW100, which is small (two AA
batteries), synthesised and sophisiticated. Using a passive reel-type
antenna (I think there is such a device available from Radio Shack,
though mine was made by Sangean), it seems plenty sensitive for SWBC.
That is my main use, so I can listen to news and such when in remote
locations (Patagonia in two weeks) without carrying a larger radio.
Before that I had a less-capable Sony ICF SW-1, but it died 5-6 years ago.

In a larger format the Sony 7600GR does SSB/CW. Uses four AAs. I take
it camping but not overseas.

Judging from the size and features, a kit of this sophisication and size
would have lots of SMT devices, and be gnarly to design and build.

Yes, they do suck down the batteries. For my Sony SW-100 I carry
Lithium AAs. They last longer than alkalines and are about half the mass.

I also carry a small analog receiver of Chinese origin (Kaito WRX911) as
a backup: It runs forever on two Alkaline AAs (price was $35 or so,
one-tenth the price of the SW-100). It is strictly AM only, since my
purpose is to find English SWBC to listen to in the evening (I'm always
trekking during the day on these trips)

Since my use is sporadic (two weeks in Greece in May, two weeks in Chile
this month), the battery count does not get too high.

[Elecraft] KPA 100 resistance checks

2004-12-13 Thread Robert Greenwalt
I've built the KPA 100 up to the alignment and installation steps and
made the resistance checks at J3+ and Q1 and Q2 collectors (all of which
are supposed to be greater than 10k). The instructions state that the
J3+ resistance may initially read 0 because a large electrolytic must
charge up and that it may take 20 seconds for the reading to stabilize.

My readings at J3+ and the Q1 collector never stabilize above 10k - they
start at 0, pop up to a value above 10k, then start decreasing
eventually ending around 1-2k. Is this okay?

2004-12-13 Thread Tom Althoff
I believe the reel antenna is active with a preamp powered from SW-100
depending on which switch position the freq range is set for.

It is a pretty impressive radio for the size. FM stereo at the headphone
jack, fixed level audio output jack for recording. Slow tuning rate for
SSB/CW. And synchronous detetection with a choice of either USB or LSB
keeps fading to a minimum.

Built-in alarm clock too and memory presets. Set on top of each other the
package is slightly bigger than a pack cigarettes.

Fits nicely into a shirt pocket.

What a fantastic receiver. Thanks for the info. How could anybody beat
that price?! My Sony ICF7600D died last year, at _27_ years old and then
not because of a fault, but because some alkaline batteries exploded
inside it from heat (the processor board was then eaten away even though
cleaned with DI water and IPA). The 1102 looks like a great replacement.

Sony does make such an antenna. But it, too, takes batteries. I have
one but do not use it. My active antenna is an extendable whip, not a reel.

They also make a larger active loop antenna that I don't have. Packs up
small, I believe. Can be ordered from AES.

I find the passive reel model quite adequate for SWBC, since the radio
is very sensitive. But the more exotic antennas could be useful if
staying in a large metallic hotel, since they can be remoted in a window
of some such place.

I wholeheartedly agree with this recommendation. I've owned several compact
portable SSB-capable Sony radios in the 7600-series over the last 22 years and
I consider all of them to be excellent performers for this class of radio. The
ICF-7600GR is the latest and best of the lot, though it's been out for a few
years. Independent reviews have always been lauditory, and unlike the closest
competing Grundig product, it has synchronous AM reception. It's just a little
too large to be considered pocket-sized, yet with that size come a respectable
speaker. At about $180, it is IMO still a great value. I'm hoping a new
version will be out in a few years that will handle DRM broadcasts.

There's a review page at:

Here's a URL for the service manual, normally a hard document to find for most
of these portables:

http://pcpropittsburgh.com/icfsw7600gr/icf-sw7600gr.servicemanual.pdf

My favorite portable radio backpack shack includes the Elecraft K1, the Sony

so-called all-in-one set like the Yaesu FT-870.

[Elecraft] Mods, mods, mods for #1107

2004-12-13 Thread Allen Ward
Yesterday I put the SWR mod in my KPA100 for my K2 #1107 which was
purchased on 3-29-2000. No problems and the rig worked fine as usual after
the mod. I got to thinking that it seems like I have been doing mods for
four years and it must have cost me a fortune. I got out my invoices (I
have never thrown ANYTHING away) and ran a total on my mods and the original
cost of the K2 and all modules and updates. I have a K2 with a KPA100, a
SSB module, a 160 meter module, a noise blanker and a DSP module. Todays
price for these is a total of $1344.00. I then ran a total on my K2 with
new crystals, PPL mod, 2nd filter mod. BFO mod, shield mod, firmware
upgrades, etc., etc. and got a total of $1345.00. So over four years of
adding mods (I admit some didn't cost anything) I had to spend a whole
dollar more than I could have bought the same end product today. Of course
I had four years of use of an outstanding tranceiver and the enjoyment of
making the mods and dealing with a company that furnishes free online
documentation and service second to none. I think I got my money's worth!!

That was a very interesting analysis.
I have an unmodified K2 (#402) which I hope to upgrade and add some nice
options soon. But I must say I am very pleased with its unmodified
performance. I've gotten 11 out of 12 Foxes with it so far for the Winter

obsolete; even the first 100 XC units are still fully competitive.

Does this mean that I need to buy an Icom handmic for use with the K2, or
can I get the K2 mic and wire it so that I can use the Heil headset that I
already have?

Bernville, Pennsylvania - Koziar's Christmas Village

Hello all,

I will activate Christmas Village Covered Bridge # 38-06-g this
Thursday, December 9th from 2000 utc until 2300 utc. I will operate
40m, 20m 17m ssb around the ARCBS Suggested Frequencies. I will take
a special picture of the covered bridge at night with all its lights on
for the qsl card! I hope to work many while I'm at Christmas Village.

This counts towards the Jingle Bell Romp Award too!

Re: [Elecraft] K2, Mounting RFC11

2004-12-13 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm

Ben,

Just put the wires in the holes, push it flat against the bottom of the
board, snug the wires on top and solder. It WILL stay in place - not real
tight, but certainly good enough - there are a lot of K2s out there that
have RFC11 mounted just that way and I have seen no problem reports about it
yet.

Ok, I found a couple of messages in the files about
RFC11, but nothing decisive.

The manual says to mount it horizontally on the bottom
of the board, but the holes are almost on opposite
sides of the toroid. This would mean routing the
wires around the side of the toroid to get to the
mounting holes, and wouldn't make it too awful secure
I wouldn't think.

How did all of you you mount your RFC11? Pictures?

AGC - was [Elecraft] OT-Preserving CW memories

2004-12-13 Thread Hank Kohl K8DD
I was at VO2AAA in Labrador City for CQ WW CW with K2/100 #850 and an
AL-1200. We were next to a residential area with a very high line noise
and precipitation static.
On 80 and 160 meters with the AF gain about 3/4 way up and riding the RF
gain and DSP with noise reduction made some of the second third tier
stations copyable. Sometimes you have to be really fast on reducing the
RF gain to save your ears!

I don't really like the sound that I get out of my K2 with the DSP, but
when you are digging stations out of the noise the NR and the DSP filter #1
really helped.

The K2 as the run station was good for about 3000 Q's, the mult station for
a couple hundred. And 3.4M points. Think I remember working a couple
calls from this list!

Ron and all,

Are you aware that reducing the RF gain will reduce the AGC action as
well. Folks who want to try it may be surprised how well copy can be made
under QRM conditions with the AF gain at full and the overall gain
controlled by the RF gain.

With this technique, the residual AGC provides some 'limiting' protection
for the ears while allowing one to dig for really weak signals - this is
applicable at any bandwidth, but more so for wider ones.

To this day I still prefer a wide filter, even with moderate QRM. With my K2
on CW, I use the SSB filter more than any other. I love being able to keep
track of what's going on around the frequency I'm using. The trick of
course, is to turn off the AGC so stronger signals in the passband won't
depress the receiver gain. One of these days I'll add a hard limiter to
protect my ears. The dynamic range of the K2 allows really huge peaks to
come through without the AGC.
