[Elecraft] Hi current

2004-12-17 Thread Robert Greenwalt
I just installed my KPA 100 with the KAT100 antenna tuner. Every thing
was working fine on all bands - until I attempted to tune on 40 meters.
Suddenly I got an alarm and the panel is locked - I can't get to menu or
any of the controls. The alarm is a continuous beeping. I removed the
high power (Anderson power pole) supply and went to the low current
barrel supply - no change. ???

[Elecraft] Samlex SEC-1223 12VDC Switching P/S - RFI Reduction

2004-12-17 Thread Tom Hammond

Greetings folks:

Thanks to Nigel Hayton, ZL2DF, I have just posted to my web site at

www.n0ss.net

an article which described Nigel's efforts to reduce the not insignificant
switching spurs he was experiencing from his Samlex 1223 power supply.

Basically, Nigel, with only a couple additions to the output circuitry of
the PSU, was able to reduce his 160M birdies from the S-9 level to a level
of S-1 to S-2... a pretty significant reduction, for a small investment.

The PDF of this article can be found about 1/3 of the way down my rambling
home page, just below the photo of the Samlex 1223.

If you happen to have a Samlex 1223, you might also be interested in some
service info for this power supply which can be found at the same location
on my home page. The schematic which came from Samlex, was pretty shoddy,
and after many photocopyings had become pretty difficult to read. I have
now included an newly re-drawn copy of the schematic, along with the
original copy I received. I hope you will find the new schematic a bit
easier to work with.

Enjoy.

73, and MANY thanks to Nigel for sharing his success with us.

Re: [Elecraft] Missing knurled ring on Heil mic?

2004-12-17 Thread redmen1969
I don't mean to re-hash the same subject either, but I guess I missed the end
of this discussion also.

Regarding the vertical tube that comes from the stand to the mic, can someone
tell me if the threads on the bottom section are supposed to screw all of the
way into the base? Mine goes in about half way and then there is a few rows of
threads still visible. I haven't tried to apply too much pressure as I don't
want to strip the threads that are already in the base.

Or, perhaps I have it upside down?

Thanks,
Tom

One might presume so, incorrectly. It was common convention to use kilocycles
(KC) and megacycles (MC), excluding any reference to "per second."

Here's an ARC-5 transmitter, showing same: http://hug-a-bug.com/arc5b.jpg

This convention also carried over into more formal texts:
http://www.nj7p.org/manuals/arc-5/arc-5.html#_Toc460591310

Hertz himself, although occasionally making reference to "times per second",
more often used "period of oscillation" and usually used wavelength, which
makes sense, since this was much easier to measure at the time. Here's a brief
portion of "Electrical Waves":

I monitor my digital transmissions through an audio out jack on my

Simply plug the computer speakers into the audio out jack on your
interface and you should be able to hear the tones being generated by

2004-12-17 Thread Ted
Before I insulated my backstay I used Hamsticks on the stearn. Since I
don't have a copper plate on the hull I threaded 33ft of insulated
tinned wire through poly rope with a small float on the end and let it
trail in the water for a ground. Over salt water you don't need an
elaborate antenna system for good results! I would think that the
suggested vertical wire hoisted aloft would also give good results.

Re: [Elecraft] Puffing to keep up with the Nanofarads...

2004-12-17 Thread Larry Phipps

Yes, this does seem logical... I have a kit of precision resistors
that's at least 15 years old that is marked in that way... so it's not
new. I know there have been recent attempts to standardize on a new
system for parts... put forth by CCIR or IEEE or someone.

I guess I can deal with change, but there's something comforting about
the system that was in place when I used to flip through the Allied and
Lafayette catalogs as a youth... when the warm glow of vacuum tubes
permeated the shack, when we used to have to trudge through a mile of 6'
deep snow to go to school, when an atom was only made up of protons,
neutrons and electrons... and when Superman stood for Truth, Justice and
the American way ;-)

Larry N8LP

In Europe at least things seem to have gone another step forward in some
quarters with what was expressed as 4.7nF (0.0047uF) now often written as 4n7.
This follows through in other decades as 4p7 for 4.7pF, 4u7 for 4.7uF and so
on. The idea also seems to have been used with resistors where a 0.47 ohm is
seen as R47, a 4.7 ohm is now seen as 4R7, a 4.7K ohm as 4K7 and a 4.7M ohm as
4M7.

The method has less chance of misinterpretation it would seem.

The biggest change on my part was going from metres to kc/s and the like,
kc/s to kHz not really representing a problem.

RE: [Elecraft] OT power supply question

2004-12-17 Thread G. Beat
John -

I have known some supplies to do this with the initial current inrush. A
problem reported by some is "singing" of the transformer, usually due to loose
laminations or transformer not tightened to case.

I have never been fond of the Pyramid power supplies. My experience is that
Pyramid achieved lower retail costs than Astron and other suppliers by "cutting
corners" with the heat sink size (thermal mass) and filter capacitor ratings.

The eHam.net product reviews appear to support my observations and experience
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/974

http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/960

As Dave Metz points out (and the reviews) some these short comings can be
addressed by replacing key components with better values and ratings.

Post hoc, ergo propter hoc. It's an error in logic, same as concluding that
your alarm clock causes the sun to rise. That is of course incorrect, since it
actually causes the horizon to set.

uuF was used to spec cap values in tube equipment.
The introduction of semiconductors forced a conversion
to use the 'pico' prefix.

Same with hertz. Tube gear measured frequency in
cycles per second. The transistor changed all of
that.

Today, the use of surface mount parts has caused the
need for 'nano.'

Oops... it was pointed out to me off-list that the required cap is 4.7

commonly to be written as .0047 uf, but maybe it's an international thing.

[Elecraft] units of measurement, explained

2004-12-17 Thread Steve Jackson
uuF was used to spec cap values in tube equipment.
The introduction of semiconductors forced a conversion
to use the 'pico' prefix.

Same with hertz. Tube gear measured frequency in
cycles per second. The transistor changed all of
that.

Today, the use of surface mount parts has caused the
need for 'nano.'
