[Elecraft] Elecraft Keying Amp with K1
Hi folks I am using my K1 to drive the tube PA in an old TS520 and it works great but I'm using manual keying of the TS520. I have been reading the various posts here on keying an amp from the 8R line of the K2. I want to do the same thing on the K1. I figure that if I use the 6A and 6R line from the 3 pin connector on the filter board (connector J1 for the Kat1) it will work the same as the K2 mod. I guess I will have to set the K1 QSK delay much longer in the K1 to prevent the old TS520 switching too often. The TS520 keying line has +15 V on it and it goes to ground with 2.5mA drain. I propose to use the little two transistor circuit shown on the Elecraft Web site or something similar. If I use a bipolar in stead of a fet and a 10K to it's base I reckon I'll get 2.2mA draw on the 6A line and 0.5mA on 6R line when in Rx and 0.5mA on the 6A line on Tx. Does all this seem OK to you experts? Is the 6R line the best one to use? Don't want to damage anything. Roy Morris W4WFB However if you get a QSK amp, like some of the Alpha's or TenTec's, you can retain the degree of QSK that the K2 or K2/100 is able to provide. Sure. Just key the K2/100 and take the AMP T-R output from the back and connect it directly to the T-R input of the QSK amp. I have an Alpha 76PA in which I installed retrofitted ETO QSK, and I've keyed it in this manner since day-one which no problems whatsoever. It is best to NOT key the amp and allow it to key the K2/100. Although that's how ETO used to want you to do it with their Alpha 78, I never found it to work correctly. However, using the newer QSK rigs, which offer a few mS of pre-keying of the T-R line before RF is generated, keying the rig and allowing IT to key the amp works just great. 73, Tom N0SS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I made an amplifier similar to the amp in Communication Concepts web page, specifically the Motorola EB-104 Amplifier (kit!) that uses 4 MRF-150 transistors. See www.communication-concepts.com/eb104.htm. I use 48 volts supply voltage and keep the 48 volts on all the time. I use the 8R line of the K2 with the keying circuit mentioned several times in this reflector. I built a set of low pass filters for the bands I operate, that is 40M, 20M and 17 M. I get about 500 watts out of the amplifier after the low pass filters and the relays. I use a 2 element wire beam up 35 feet so I don't have a huge signal but the audio compression in the K2 really helps a lot. It sure is nice to break a pileup on 20M phone with one call when the band is open to Africa!! About this I can add that during 2003 CQWW DX contest, CW section, I operated in various periods using nominal 100 mW power of my K2 Elecraft. [Elecraft] advantages of separate amp vs K2/100 ?
Are there any valid electro/mechanical advantages to separating the 100w amp from the K2 (other than, of course the ability to have a K2 with internal battery and ATU)? It appears that some minor original heat related drift issues are all solved.but are there any other concerns? Those of you who have built separates as well as installed the amp directly in the K2 - what have you observed? Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K1 Record Set/13 Million Miles per Watt
Hmmm ... all of us (world wide) measure wavelength in metric units. Admittedly, the USA is converting to metric units very very slowly (inch by inch someone once told me) but if distance per watt is going to a measure of achievement, wouldn't we want to do it in metric units -- Km/W? Then, when it finally happens, our grandchildren won't have to make a conversion of all of our records ;-) Just a thought Fred K6DGW Auburn CA CM98lw I0SKK - Alessandro Santucci wrote: About this I can add that during 2003 CQWW DX contest, CW section, I operated in various periods using nominal 100 mW power of my K2 Elecraft. Not a linear behavior for sure... Lets say that a 500 mW signal at 7,4 mHz is received 4000 km away and that both antennas are half-waves dipoles. We could be tempted to say that an 1 watt signal would reach 8000 km in the same conditions. But according to the Friis transmission formula, the first 500 mW signal is reduced to 0,0096 microwatts at the received end, and the second one (1 watt) is a whooping 0,0048 microwatts! Still readable? Not sure... The inverse of the square of the distances is working there, hyperbolic, not linear. Twice the power, but the distance doubled, squared makes 4 and the fraction becomes 1/2. 72/73, de VE2PID KX1 # 442 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Miles per Watt
It's all in fun, miles, the simple math, the whole bit. As I pointed out on slashdot, it's a simpified model. Going to inverse squared is one step closer to the physics, but it's a slippery slope. You will want to measure the ERP in the direction used by the propagation path, factor in the antenna receiving gain sinilarly, use the IONCAP or that Australian ionosonde data to find the length of the actual propagation path and refraction angles (It's not like the radio signal goes on a great circle path! Perhaps the 3d straight-line distance through the Earth wold be better?), subtract our D layer attenuation, note the coding gain in dB -- surely there is some gain in QRSS at one hour -- and finally define an acceptable BER (bit error rate). In other words, you can make it as complicated as you want. Or as simple as 1000 miles per watt. DX can have a 1000kKM/watt award! Leigh. Is adding the AT well after the main radio is completed any more difficult or time consuming (read partial disassembly), or is it no different than having it all at the same time? Vin, That's exactly how I did it! When I first got my K1, I was using it with an Emtech ZM-2 tuner. It was nice; but the AT sounded so nice! That year Santa brought it for Christmas. I built it in one night and did the install the same evening. Talk about a piece of cake! Once again, the guys at Elecraft did a great job with the instructions and installation was a snap. And it works great, to boot! Re: [Elecraft] K1-4 Ant Tuner Question
The latest permutation of the K1 is rigged for easy installation and removal of the KAT1 tuner! So you can build the K1, operate it, and build and plug in the tuner when you are ready for it. The power sensing network for the K1 alone is a resistive voltage divider, there is a jumper strip (a la computer configuration configuration jumpers) to go to the SWR bridge in the KAT1 to indicate power and VSWR when its installed. There is also a bare wire jumper used in one of the KAT1 sockets that must be pulled when the KAT1 is plugged in. The most piddley part of the installation is keeping the spacers in place on the long screws that mount the KAT1. I solved this with a couple of rubber band sections between screws and spacer inside bore to retain the spacers on the screws when the KAT1 is removed, if needed to realign the 4 band board. (None of the adjustments are accessible on the 4 band card when the KAT1 is piggy-backed on top of it.) I enjoy my K1 very much! The KAT1 is VERY handy in the field and means one more piece of gear you don't have to tote around and connect up, etc. I am presently waiting for a 2 band board from Elecraft to convert to 160 and 80 meter operation. (The 160 meter band is not an offered option, but is easily added to one position of an extra two band card. Elecraft has all the needed parts, toroid cores EXCEPT for the 9.8 Mhz crystal, which presently must be ordered from ICM or any reputable crystal manufacturer.) 73, Sandy W5TVW - Original Message - From: V Cortina [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, January 07, 2005 8:06 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K1-4 Ant Tuner Question | Hi everyone. | | I have been on and off the list for a while, and I have just gotten back on, because I think I might finally be ready to get started on a K1. [Elecraft] Favor to ask...
I just finished the resistance check on my new KAT-100 and all looks ok. It was a fun project to put together. Winding those large toroids is a breeze compared to those in the K2 or KPA-100. I am going ahead with my K2+1 (=K3?) where the KAT-100 will be an integral part of my K2/100. I removed the feet and bail from the K2 and had to drill two holes in the bottom/rear panel of the K2 to mount a pair of 2D connectors so I can mate one-to-one with the KAT-100. I bought one of those cooling fans used in the KPA-100 (a bit pricey at $22.00 each!) and will be mounting it in the KAT-100 to blow across the bottom of the K2 output transistors (and eventually up out of the KPA-100 heat sink). I will be enlarging the hole where the DB-9 connector would have been if I had installed it in the KAT-100 and that's where the fan will be mounted. Instead of externally feeding the Elecraft bus signals via the DB-9 I want to tie into P4 of the KAT-100 circuit board and run a ribbon cable up to the control panel and KPA-100 header connectors. HERE'S THE REQUEST FOR THE FAVOR (took long enough to get here...thanks for reading)... Is there anyone on the Elecraft list who can fabricate a ribbon cable with the 10 pin female connectors to connect the Control panel of the K2 with P4 in the KAT-100 and the header in the KPA-100?I would need 4 inches between the 1st and 2nd connector and another 6 inches to the last connector. I'll post pics when this gets done in case anyone else wants to butcher their radio too. I think it looks pretty good...certainly unique. Re: [Elecraft] New KX(mas)1 parts count: 100%
Have a ball, John. Santa left me a KX1 too. Since I am retired, mine has been built and it is working FB. Like you, the KX1 didn't have a single missing part nor did the 30M and ATU options. I have to agree with you about Christine. I found her 'fortune cookie' pieces of paper in every bag and envelope that I opened. It is easy to see who does all the work at Elecraft. I'll bet Wayne and Eric spend most of their time with their feet on the desk, drinking coffee, and eating doughnuts. -- John K7SVV - Original Message - From: John_K7FD [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, January 07, 2005 9:00 PM Subject: [Elecraft] New KX(mas)1 parts count: 100% KX-1 nr 959 is out of the bag; all parts accounted for. Re: [Elecraft] Favor to ask...
Anyone out there with a Blue Max crimp kit? I've used small pieces of angle iron and some vicegrips to do this. The angle iron distributes the force on the connector during crimping so that it isn't damaged. Works great in a pinch (pardon the pun... :). ~Don ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
