[Elecraft] re : resistance vs impedence
Hello Ken, in your exemple despite the SWR staying the same the curent is not the same : at r=6+j16 the curent will much ùuch higher than with r=48+j146 ! Result : you will have more loss with the hight curent and the result will be less field intensity in the fist situation than in the second ! [Elecraft] KIO2 not talking anymore - my findings
Hi Following my recent post here is what I found. There was no hardware problem - all checked out OK except for the TXD pin which was hi - this is not a fault as it toggles hi - lo with data and can be checked with a 'scope. Thanks to Don for the very useful info that if you have a terminal programme (Hyperterm ) running on the KIO2 and you go to the 'PORT ON' menu and then press 'DISPLAY' , the K2 sends 'FAxxx' to the port (where x...xx - 11 of them, is the freq info on VFO A) . My problem was a software problem with the logging and control programmes I run on KIO2. It seems that it is possible to write to the KIO2/K2 in such a way (FA and IF commands) that the KIO2 does not appear to function, probably something to do with timing?. Initially I was not able to reset the KIO2 by merely turning the K2 off and on. But after I used the test above the K2 reset and the KIO2 worked perfectly. So if you have this problem I would try the above first before getting the screwdriver out. I see today that someone else had the same problem - hope this helps 73 and thanks again to Don and Lyle for the suggestions Bob G3PJT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 45 deg stand?
Several months ago, I built what I call my KX1 Desktop Adapter, and it's worked out real well. It's made from PC board material, a few strips of lead (which isn't absolutely necessary), male female stereo connectors, and is covered with stick-on felt. It's basically a U-shaped bracket that has the male connector sticking out of the middle of it, and a small post in front, that holds the paddle. It holds the rig vertically, which made it easier to build, and elevates it maybe 3/4, allowing me to more easily spin the tuning knob with my index finger. If anybody's interested in how I built it, let me know, and I'll try to take a picture write a short description sometime this week. Maybe it'll give you some ideas about building something yourself. Ron wrote: About my KX1 I explained, This little box that fits in my jacket pocket is a complete short-wave radio station that I built. I can throw a wire over a tree limb and contact other people over a range of hundreds of miles, thousands of miles, even half way around the world at times. It requires no satellites, no cellular towers and no telephone or power lines. It requires nothing at all but me and the other station. Hi Ron, That describes exactly the kick I get from operating out in the boonies on HF. No infrastructure is required, just the radios on each end and the physics of wave propagation between them. I enjoy reading my old 1930s QSTs where there are occassionally stories of amateur radio support in flooding, tornado, and other emergencies, using vacuum tube gear that was difficult to power, and Morse as the mode. Today, I do have doubts about the practical value of amateur radio emergency communications in all but extremely rare situations. The cellular phone systems in many places in the world are surprisingly robust and reliable. I know I was able to keep in touch with my brother in Pensacola a few months ago with him using a cell phone all through and after hurricane Ivan, and I know others who did the same for other hurricanes last Summer. All had lost power and landlines for days or weeks, yet their cell phones worked as long as they had charged battery packs. Apparently the same thing has occured in Asia, except where there had been no cell coverage. Impressive. There were, I'm sure, isolated regions where ham radio provided help, and I suspect that in the USA those rural and wilderness area where cell coverage is still spotty (my favorite spot in the Arkansas Ozarks has no cell coverage except on high ridges, for example), HF ham ops still have some small potential for emergencies, especially if VHF repeaters are off air. I somehow doubt the practical value of HF QRP and/or Morse operations in providing today significant emergency communications capability under most likely encountered conditions. I believe that the design of any serious HF emergency communications system should include a 100 watt output rig capable of SSB operation in the 40m and 80m bands, with large deep discharge batteries for power and some sort of gasoline-powered charging system (no solar arrays), and a real antenna (No buddi-poles, miracle whips, MP-1s, etc.). If I were organizing ham radio support on HF, the last thing I'd want is everyone showing up with 5 watt 20m CW rigs powered from AA cells. But anything would be better than nothing in a last resort! 73, Mike / KK5F ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KIO2 connector safety modification?
Guys, I knew you would come through...;-) So there's basically three ways to do this: 1. Block pin 4 of the KIO2 and cut the corresponding pin from the male connector. 2. Create a short cable and leave it attached. 3. Cut a slot in the shell of the male connector directly above pin 3, and solder a bit of wire for a key onto the shell of the female connector. See http://members.cox.net/cwnut/KI02_Serial_2.pdf The latter one I had seen before, but forgot about. As soon as I saw it again, I recognized the pictures.. And solution #1 was what remembered and thought I'd seen pictures of. Thanks for sorting me out. I think I'll go for #3 with a slight twist (why standardize, eh?): I think I'll put the wire on the female connector at the bottom instead of on the top (yes I'll remember to file the slot accordingly). The female connector will look less 'doctered' that way. Thanks again, Bart de PA3GYU. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] #4684
Hi all. K2/100 #4684 has passed alignment and test part 1 but not without some human error thrown in. I will swear on a stack of any book you want that I checked U1 pin #1 on the front panel board during the resistance checks. I got the radio all asembled and powered up but no display. I tore it all down again only to find that pin #1 had infinite resistance instead of the 25-35K it was supposed to have. All of the other readings were correct. I figured it was a cold joint on pin #1 of the socket. I didn't think I was going to be able to remove the LCD without screwing it up so I took the chip out of the socket and reheated the pin through the socket with a needle point tip I bought with my 936. A one second count was enough to reflow the solder and I didn't melt any part of the socket. I have now instituted a touch 'em twice policy when it comes to soldering all connections. I'll let the solder cool then a few seconds later go back and hit them all again. Still having fun. -- R. [Elecraft] OT: Annoying Noise: problem solved
A while back I had a loud noise problem on 20m 17m which I tracked down to a neighbor's doorbell transformer that was going bad. Then about 7 months ago I encountered a similar extremely loud but marching noise that wiped out all but the 80m band with S9 + 20 noise spikes at roughly 1 second intervals. I used an MFJ-852 broadband noise receiver to track it down finally to an area of my house. Since that portion of the house was on one circuit, turning off the breaker confirmed my suspicion by ending the noise abruptly. I then proceeded to turn off everything connected to each outlet one by one. But when I finished the noise was still there. How could that be! Finally after checking all the outlets again, I found a cord going behind my couch in the family room that I assumed to go to a table lamp. It turned out to go to my spare Dewalt 24V Battery charger that I kept upstairs in the house and had forgotten about. Yep! This was the culprit. A simply battery charger created such interference on my attic loop antenna, as to make the bands virtually unusable. I seem to remember reading in the recent ARRL on-line bulletin where the FCC had ruled against the neighbor of a ham who was getting similar interference from the neighbor's Snowmobile Battery Chargers. With so many devices dependent on rechargeable power cells these days, keep an eye out for these inexpensive radio-deafening contraptions. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Birdie at10m: a choice between a turkey and anostrich !
Evening Sverre, The 16.289 oscillator I mentioned last night is the source oscillatoir for the KPA's high voltage supply. There is not a 16.289 MHz source in my K2, and with the KPA100 uninstalled, K2 alone has the birdie at approx 28276 MHz CW /USB which moves up to 28278.5 approx on LSB. Using the KSB2's filter, the Birdie / Noise ratio is 12db, far from weak. Receiver's Noise Floor in spec, and input connected direrctly to a 50 ohm dummy load. As I have to open up K2 for other reasons, I intend to break the K2's LO to signal mixer connection, and drive the TUF-1's LO port from a HP signal generator, properly padded, but still leave the K2's LO running. Hopefully I should be able to get useful data on many birdies and their birth routes as the receiver can then be tuned without changing the PLL's frequency, and vice versa if you follow me. 73, GeoffGM4ESD - Original Message - From: Sverre Holm [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, January 17, 2005 5:59 PM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Birdie at10m: a choice between a turkey and anostrich ! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of G3VVT The reported birdie at 28.276MHz is there, but extremely faint at about 28.275.6MHz on USB and shifts up to about 28.277.7MHz on LSB. Re: [Elecraft] Solder Methods
I played with my father-in-law's Radio Shaft version over Xmas. Looks like resistance soldering to me, except the tip on that thing is way more fragile than the tweezers (which I learned to solder bifurcated terminals with) the Navy used. It appears to be cast from a graphite-like substance, and they warn you not to press very hard when using it. Instead of tweezers, the tip appears to be two halfs with an insulator between .. you place the tip against the (conductive) material to be soldered. de John/W1RT On Mon, 17 Jan 2005 15:04:32 -0500, Mike,W8KRR [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Alright, all you experts, what can you tell me about cold heat soldering? Do I carry my KX1 with me when I'm in the back country? Yep, it's far more reliable than my cell phone... when I have propagation with my compromise wire antenna and there is little noise on the band so the guy on the other end can hear my QRP signal and I'm the one who's not injured and ... well, you get the idea. Frankly, I think Field Day should be graded solely on maintaining 24 hour contact with one station at least 1000 miles away and passing traffic with them, either direct or through a relay. Maybe then people would understand that setting up a dedicated circuit for emergency traffic is far more difficult than throwing up a dipole, cranking up a generator and calling CQ until someone answers you. Amateur radio is fun and can make a difference, but it's only ONE of the tools to be used in an emergency, not the only tool. I will make Ron's point that this mode of communication gets through when nothing else can (barring EMP, I guess...). - That's great Eric! I like the KX1 for it's Gee Whiz factor because it doesn't look like a typical two-way radio. Guess it's my marketing training, but when I demonstrate my KX1 and people say Gee whiz! Look at that!, I know that the image and the message will stick in their minds. To me, Ham radio emergency communications is like a fire extinguisher. We hope we'll never need it, but one wants to know it's there just the same. I've had the experience of suddenly being without telephone communications or overland access of any kind in an emergency that isolated whole towns for days. People were injured and dying, yet we were less than 50 miles from San Jose and San Francisco, CA. Once a person has had that sort of experience, the value of having emergency communications is never forgotten. With the sort of emergencies and threats we face today, more and more people are wanting the comfort of knowing that reliable communications is there if it is needed. Rick, WD8KEL wrote: Amateur radio is fun and can make a difference, but it's only ONE of the tools to be used in an emergency, not the only tool. Absolutely. I apologize if I suggested any differently. I referred to the rigs as public relations tools, speaking to their perceived value to the community. One of the greatest values to the public that we've served over the years again and again is health and welfare messaging. That is, relieving the strain on traditional telephones and other channels that are needed for the emergency work by providing messages about the health and welfare of people in an affected zone to anxious friends and relatives elsewhere. It keeps us in practice and ready to jump in if needed to save lives. But the real value is not in headline-gathering heroics. It's in the work-a-day drudge work of letting Uncle Henry know that the kids in the storm zone are safe and well. There's real satisfaction in doing that. Rather than burn up any more bytes on the Elecraft reflector, I'd suggest anyone interested check with the RACES pages at www.arrl.org or the National Radio Emergency Network pages at http://68.43.101.244:81/nren/. NREN maintains emergency communications capabilities at all times on the 40, 30 and 20 meter CW bands through volunteer monitoring stations. If anyone has other questions, feel free to contact me off the reflector too. Ron AC7AC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The cellular phone systems in many places in the world are surprisingly robust and reliable. What would happen after an earthquake that caused severe damage, injury, and loss of life? I somehow doubt the practical value of HF QRP and/or Morse operations in providing today significant emergency communications capability under most likely encountered conditions. I don't know if it was QRP, but HF CW was used after the tsunami. -- 73, Brian VE7NGR ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. No, Ron, you didn't suggest anything wrong. More frequent than not, we (yes, this includes me, sometimes) get carried away and sell the wrong concept by accident. I was trying to point out we need to be careful when we start selling the positive aspects of the hobby we all love and not overdo it. And thanks for the info on NREN. I don't know that I'd seen it before. If I did, I'd forgotten about it. 73! [Elecraft] Strange Behavior of K2 462 on PSK31
Hi, I have some strange behavior of K2 462 on PSK31. I set the power level at 15 watts and advance the drive through a combination potentiometer and the sound card output until I get 5 watts output. The interface is homebrew per QST May 99. The ALC is not functioning. Using r or r rev mode on the k2, bandwidth F1. Using either a dummy load or an antenna. When going to transmit, the power level first goes to 2 watts output and increases slowly to 5 or 6 watts; it takes 20 seconds +/- to get there. At that point the ALC light on the display (display indicating ALC) lights. The power level oscillates from 5 to 6 watts for 2 seconds then drops quickly to 1/2 watt and within 1 sec comes up to 2 watts. Then the cycle repeats itself. Second computer it has done so on. I hooked up a VOM and measured the sound card output; it is steady. SSBA set on 1, SSBC set on 1-1. K2/100 3571, same settings as 462 except the power is 9, its output is a steady 1.7 watts; set power on 110 watts, its output is a steady 22 watts. All power levels are average. PSK31 is sending the idle characters. Any ideas? 73, Chas W1CG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Clicks in K2/100 on rx unmute -- solved!
Some may remember that I was hearing an annoying click when the receiver of my K2 unmuted, only when the KPA100 and the DSP were both active, and only on 160/80 meters. I tried a lot of things, however, what finally worked was changing C71 on the KPA100 board from 0.01 uf to 0.1 uf. The click is gone.
