[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Special Request Addenda
Yes folks, It is me again. I have a special request to make of the lucky few Elecraft owners who live in either Delaware or South Dakota. Could you please brush off your key or paddles and try checking in to my humble net? I would appreciate it very much if you could knock the last two states required off our WAS list. Then I will apply to Larry Makoski, W2LJ, the Elecraft Awards Manager, for an Elecraft WAS certificate for the Elecraft CW Net. It will be posted on Dan's web site along side our Century Award. The serial number list has since grown to nearly 300 so maybe we should apply for a stamp on the electronic certificate ;) Once again: anyone from Delaware or South Dakota who likes CW and wants to get on the air please join us! [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, Becker and Fagan's Bodhisattva in the headphones, soldering iron in hand, circuit design that was on paper is working in real life; I feel like Pagliaci. So it goes. The tuner and SWR bridge are working nicely. Now to crunch them down to fit in a backpack and be rugged enough for the trail. Steely Dan is doing wonders however; bringing back memories of the early '70s and campus life at UW off the Union pier hitching rides on sailboats. Skiing across the lake to the ice shanty to fish all nite or catch a ride back on an iceboat. 40 meters was nice on Thursday night for the fox hunt. Working across to NY was a bit of a stretch but doable. Yesterday W7WEL was an easy catch up in Idaho. Turned down the power and worked him for about half an hour on 40 meters until hunger forced me off the air. He was eating while listening but I've yet to reach that skill level :) KL7V is pushing but I'm still stuck to a pencil for the most part. Soon it will be too fast but somehow I am writing at 28 wpm. And I thought writing at 14 wpm was fast. Hopefully 20 meters will be working well tomorrow. My new tuner is tuning my G5RV on that and other bands near 20 watts. Lots of fun working out all that complex arithmetic. Not difficult just error prone and tedious. I think I will just write some software with a nice GUI to work out component values and chart the results. Easier than using a calculator to bang it out long hand. Space Weather tells me the sunspot number is currently 22. That may mean 40 will be quiet tomorrow so I can work down to S1 or lower to pick up the folks I missed last week. Cross your fingers. Please join us : Monday z (Sunday 4pm PST) 14050 kHz Monday 0300z (Sunday 7pm PST) 7045 kHz Visit our web site: http://ecn.visionseer.com/ for net details. Thanks Dan. There are no special procedures to follow on ECN. Just send your call sign when one of the NCS folks calls for QNI. Speed is whatever you feel comfortable with. Please check in and see who you can hear around North America. New Zealand to South Africa to Germany are the limits so far. As the season changes we may have special propagation allowing us to meet many new folks from across the world. You also get to hear a few weather reports too :) 73 and see you on the net, Kevin. RE: [Elecraft] KSB2-Filter Measurements
W3FPR added: > -Original Message- ... - but I just can't pull some things > through on the K2 that I can with the 950 fitted with decent after-market > filters. Comparing the K2 to any other rig outfitted with after-market filters is not really a fair comparison. It does make me wonder how the K2 would do with similar after-market filters -- alas, those filters do not seem to exist. Yes, one could say it is unfair, so instead consider any rig with OEM filters against that rig with decent after-market filters - especially those from say INRAD - anyone who has used an INRADed rig will no doubt appreciate what after-market filters might do for our K2s! With almost 5000 K2s out there now, I wonder if InRad is having second thoughts about providing filters for the K2 - it may require a non-SSB K2 to fit them in physically, and with the small market created by that simple fact, they may still not be interested. Actually, the filters on the K2 are not shabby by any means, but like most anything else, could be improved with sufficient bucks and effort. An INRAD CW filter for the K2 is already available, but W2VJN suggested to me I might not want to buy one as it's hard to use - no ability to select it - so no point in doing more than a limited production run & call them prototypes. Even then, the cost was not far into the USD three-digit range - easily justified based on the expectation of what it could do, but perhaps a bit too dear seeing how it ended up in the junk box (being stuck having to always listen through the INRAD filter equally wasn't on). One INRAD filter can be made to fit in a K2 w/KDSP, KPA, KSB & KNB & I believe I can find space for another. To be able to complement the K2's stock filters with one good CW & one good SSB filter would be fantastic & definitely nowhere near as costly as doing what many of us do to other rigs (like coming up with something in the area of USD 1k to INRAD most of an MP, for example). No connection with INRAD here other than 20+ years of using their products & purchasing one of the last K2 filters George had made up despite the difficulties using it. Perhaps there is more to it than we realize, but INRAD sales are not detrimental to Elecraft as they are for Brands I, K or Y. Instead of building something from scratch, it's unfortunate that with the K2 it is not possible to easily use any alternative filter from the front panel. 73, VR2BrettGraham ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Prep time
The Xytronics soldering station you are considering is a fine choiceI borrowed an Xytronics model 168 soldering station (different model, but similar, has analog temp meter) to assemble the first 1/2 of my K2, when my "lender" needed it to be returned for his own projects. I purchased a Techamerica (Radio Shack brand on sale for $50 at the time) and finished the K2 with it, but the "iron" is much longer and clumsier to use than the Xytronics. Best part of this story is that last summer I found a brand new in the box, never used Xytronic Model 168 at a garage sale for $5.00 !! Also included was a 1 lb. new roll of Kester 44 solder! I/m sure the gent that sold it didn't know what he hadprobably was given as a gift? > In that vein, any recommendations for a decent soldering station - maybe > Jameco's analog, temp. controlled $58 one with a screwdriver tip? Actually, INRAD did make a prototype K2 CW filter -- 400 Hz with great shape factor. I have one. I first used a partial SSB board so that it could be switched in and out, but I could not get an acceptably low degree of blowby. Then I removed the SSB board and just hardwired the filter to the headers where the SSB board would go...still poor. I tried lots of things with shielding and grounding but never succeeded in getting results as good as the standard CW filters with the KI6WX mod. Just to be clear, this was NOT a problem with the filter, which looked great when tested stand-alone. It had to do with interfacing it with the K2. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KSB2-Filter Measurements
G3RXQ shared with us some measurements he made & commented: This performance was very much better than I expected. The passband has, however about a 2dB ripple in it. I think it is this ripple that makes using my K2 on SSB seem tiring to listen to as compared to other rigs. Reducing the bandwidth on the K2 makes it even more tiring as compared to other radios that derive variable bandwidth filtering with two filters & the usual IF gymnastics. G3RXQ's comment that the KSB's filter working about as well as it is probably spot on. The same could probably be said for the CW filter. The ripple - along with ultimate rejection (either due to filter or layout) - could be much better & become obvious when using the K2 in more demanding situations. After a weekend of contesting, I get a headache listening to a TS-950S - but I just can't pull some things through on the K2 that I can with the 950 fitted with decent after-market filters. Even with the nasty high-frequency crud that comes from its SCAF CW audio filter, I find I gravitate towards the 950 more than the K2 as my running rig. Whilst there are number of things about the 950 that stick out as being inferior to the K2 (like phase noise), IMHO the filters make a big difference - making me wonder what a K2 would be like if we could INRAD it like other rigs. Again, maybe not an issue for some, depending on one's operating interests. I agree with W3ICT - such "criticisms come only because the K2 is a history making radio in most other respects". 73, VR2BrettGraham ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Elecraft email List Official Guidelines
ELECRAFT email LIST GUIDELINES For those of you who are new to the list, (and for those of us who have rapidly failing memories..), here is a quick list of things to remember when posting to this list. Please save this for future reference. The most important thing to remember is that this is only a hobby - Let's have fun! 1. YOU MUST BE SUBSCRIBED to the [Elecraft] list TO POST to it. (This is done to stop advertising spammers from hitting the list.) Any postings sent to elecraft@mailman.qth.net by addresses different from the exact ones it shows as subscribers will be rejected. This includes alias (forwarded) addresses like [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you use an alias to subscribe you must have it as your from: and return address too. Subscribing with [EMAIL PROTECTED] from your physical address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] will allow you to receive postings, but your postings to the list will be rejected if their from: and reply to: address does not match your subscribe address.. Go to http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft to subscribe and to change your list preferences. To unsubscribe or to change your list preferences (digest, no mail on/off etc.), scroll to the bottom of the page and log in with your subscribed email address and the password that was sent to you by email when you subscribed (and monthly afterwards.) You can also subscribe multiple addresses and set all of them except one to 'no mail'. This will allow you to post from several alias email addresses. 2. If you want to provide an attachment, .JPG picture or other large file for use on the list, first post it to your personal web page and then post a link to its address in an email to the list. The list strips all attachments to prevent viruses from propagating and to keep the archives at a reasonable size. 3. Please keep the amount of copied text from previous posts to an -ABSOLUTE MINIMUM- in your replies. Always delete -everything- from the prior post except what is necessary to keep your reply in context. Most copied messages can be reduced to one or two sentences to retain context. Remember to delete the email list footer from the previous post and especially avoid copying a long posting and adding 'Me Too!' or something similar. As the number of users on this list grows (over 1500 now) we need to work to minimize information overload... If a reply is -not- of interest to the list, just reply directly to the posting party. 4. If you are overloaded by the volume of individual messages on the list, You can view the searchable daily Elecraft list messages for each day in web format at: http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html . These archives are updated hourly and list postings by subject. Just click on the ones you are interested into read. You can also set your list email preferences to 'no mail' delivery, which still allows you to post to the list when reading via the digest. You can also change your subscription to the DIGEST version, which sends you a single compilation each day. To change your email list options or to subscribe / unsubscribe, go to: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Scroll to the bottom of the page to log into your preferences page and set your mail options to 'no mail'. 5. ***Please keep all postings cordial.*** Restrain the urge to email someone admonishing them about a posting. The last thing we want to do is to scare anyone off the list. Overly aggressive postings and negative comments about other posters only serves to scare away new potential list members. Waiting over night before hitting 'send' really helps to put things in perspective.. If you have a complaint about someone or a thread please email it directly to me ( [EMAIL PROTECTED] ) and I'll address it. 5a. Please do not post asking people to stop a particular thread, no matter how long, off topic or repetitive it gets. Email me instead :*). I will step in when I feel it is necessary to end a thread. 5a1. Please exercise restraint in posting when a thread is getting heavily covered. 30 posts on one topic in a day (like the recurring CW thread) is usually excessive. 5b. Please do not post any direct attacks or snide comments directed at a list member. Enthusiastic arguments are encouraged, but please keep everything cordial. Members who verbally attack another (either via the list or via direct email) will be removed from the list. As the 'official' list Cop, I'll jump in as necessary to keep everything orderly. I do this off line and occasionally to the list when it is appropriate. Our goal is to keep the Elecraft list a fun, informative central clearing house for Elecraft information and enthusiasm. 6. Please DO POST your technical questions and comments to the list. Elecraft owners are your best source for quick answers (and they NEVER sleep!) If you don't get the answers you need from the list please email us direct at [EMAIL PROTECTED] , which is our customer service address. We do try to watch the list traffic,
Re: [Elecraft] Heil goldline with K2 all 8 pin mics wired just about te same
I found my Kenwood MC-60 mic is wired perfectly pin to pin if you leave out the base holder with the pre-amp in it. The on/off switch on the mic it self works for PTT with lock. I seem to have plenty of millivolts to drive the k2 into ALC COMPRSSION. I also randomly used a mic from my harris RF-3200. The mic worked too. There seems to be almost a wiring standard on 8 pin mics? I tried yet another 8 pin mic from a ts-850 and TS-50. LETS ME LOOK INTO THIS MORE WITH MORE RIGS THAT HAVE THE 8 PIN ON THE K2. So far I have plugged 6 different mics(using an 8 pin to 8 pin cable) into my K2. They all worked with PTT and VOX. Of course some sound great. Others...not terrible audio. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] Heil goldline with K2
Mick, Set the K2 jumpers for the Kenwood configuration, plug in your Goldline and give it a try. You may eventually find that you would benefit from a preamp, but it will work as is - at least my Heil HC4 and HC5 elements provide adequate (but not a lot of reserve) output for the K2 with the SSBA menu parameter set to 3 (an SSBC setting of 2 or higher helps a lot too). I have had good success with the KI6WX KSB2 Increased Gain mod as an alternative to using a pre-amp (particularly on 10 meters). 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > I have a Heil goldline with Kenwood adaptor cable that I used with > my TS-870 I would like to use this mic with the K2. > Do I need a mic pre amp or do I just set the jumpers for a standard kwd. > > Thanks Mick M1MGDK2 #4785.. > ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K2 #4785
Mick, I might believe 3.75 volts or above may be OK, but if you have run out of adjustment range at 3.3 volts, something is wrong. First, check the voltage out of your 8 volt regulator (Control Board U4). If it is OK, look at the schematic for the Control Board (lower left corner) to identify the resistors associated with the AGC Threshold pot - check the value of RP6 and check the soldering carefully. The RF Gain and the AGC Threshold pot and the other resistors (RP6 and the pot R1) form a three-legged voltage divider with 8 volts applied to one leg (the RF Gain control should show zero ohms in its full CW position), so if the resistor values are correct and the 8 volt supply is correct, you should have no problem adjusting to 3.8 volts with the AGC Threshold pot near max, and about 2.6 volts at the other end of rotation. Be certain that R1 is actually a 50k pot (measure directly across its terminals when adjusted for max resistance). There is nothing else in the circuit to cause problems. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > Hi all > I have just finished alignment and test part 1 all is good > except the test for setting the AGC threshold when I adjust R1 > i can only get a max voltage of 3.30v is this ok ?. > > Thanks Mick M1MGD.. > ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Speech processing
There were a number of external RF speech processor products available in the early 80s. I can't find the schematic for my Kenpro KP-601, but popping the cover I see something potentially home-brewable (all this discussion drove me to find it, as after changing compression ratios of the KSB2's compressor, it still doesn't sound like I would like it to). This one could turn a RF processor-less rig into something that sounds like a TS-830S with a D-104 - clean, punchy audio - and change the peak-to-average ratio enough that I once baked the paint off the cabinet of an amplifier. Not recommended for audiophiles or those who are interested in more casual operation. 73, VR2BrettGraham ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Low SSB out on upper bands
Up until today, I have only used my K2 on 75 SSB and 40 and 20 cw. Today I actually tried some 20 meter ssb, and I have very low output. On all the bands, with my K2-100 setup, where I leave the power pot, I get 70 watts (CW) out agreeing with the K2 display within 10%. On 75 and 40, I can get 75 watts PEP out (I'm using a Autek WM1 peak reading wattmeter). But on 20 and above I get only 5 watts PEP or so. Yet the CW power is there. [Elecraft] An answer to somebodys question.
They wanted to get the best possible antenna for going mobile(Car) True, one cannot use a 16 foot whip on the exact center of the car for the best omni directional performance. Some swear by a 7 foot whip that has a load coil in the middle. Should you go fiber glass or metal whip. One thing for certain. You want as much radiator as you can. I have a home brew vertical. So I will scale it down. I would also consider 7 foot of fiber or metal. Then find a inductor at the end of the 7 foot rod. I would consider a loading coil and an additional 2 feet of solid radiator. I made a decent 20M ant out of 2 CB antenna'a A 10/11 meter whip can be found any where. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Prep time
Mike I strongly recommend the AADC L/C IIB (http://www.mtechnologies.com/aade/#lcm) It has become a pretty much a standard for QRPers interesting in homebrewing. It is far more accurate and useful than the L and/or C measuring ability of most DMMs. When my sons were growing up and got into cars, I taught them to buy the best tool for the job they were doing, within reason. For L and C measurement, you can't beat the LC IIB. Would the cheap one at http://multimeterwarehouse.com/DT9205f.htm be good enough? It's the age old challenge of trying to not spend too much but trying to not buy trash, too. Wow! Such a price! I have found consistently that one gets about what one pays for. CE makes pretty good stuff. So what makes it cheap? It seems to me that there are two major differences between DMMs at high and low prices: Speed and Ruggedness. Almost every DMM uses one of a very small number of "application-specific integrated circuits" (ASICs)that are made in huge quantities for this market. The price of the ASIC is largely based on its speed. A cheap DMM can take 2 or 3 seconds to produce a reading, where an expensive one is almost instantaneous. Slowness is a nuisance in most readings, but it's a disaster if you're trying to "peak" a reading in real time! You are talking about upgrading. If your old DMM will do this, you're already fixed up. (I even keep a d'Arsonval meter "VOM" around for 'peaking' work). But If you want something to take over all the chores of meter readings, you need to consider that. "Fast" meters tend to the in the +$100 range. A full four-digit display is often very handy too, especially in a meter in which you are trying to do "peaking" adjustments. This one looks to be a 3 or 3-1/2 digit display. That's typical of cheaper meters too. There are some differences in other functions too, but they are usually minor. A lot of folks expect the accuracy of cheaper meters to be less too, but in my experience that is not the case. Again, the resistance dividers are made with modern precision manufacturing technology. It just isn't cost effective for someone trying to build a cheap meter to try to find a cheap divider. So the accuracy tends to be very similar, regardless of cost. The other big issue that I've noticed is that the high-priced meters tend to be more rugged. Of course, you only need a rugged meter if you treat it that way. It's sort of a "given" that my Flukes were going to take a nose-dive onto a steel deck plate working on ships all the time. So they had the rubber boots attached. But around the workbench? Hasn't happened yet! I was suddenly shy my Fluke one time when I needed a part for it. In the middle of some work, I cruised to Radio Shack and picked up one of their meters that sold for about $80. It's slow, but does an excellent job on capacitance (it has a parasitic capacitance of about 111 pF, but it will accurately measure a 5 pF cap - displaying it as 116 pF. And it goes up into the many-microfarad. Ranges. It's a four-digit meter, and the voltages are within a fraction of a percent of my Fluke or my Bel-Merit (an expensive pen-type meter). I got a freebie CE meter once from Mouser or Digi-Key when I placed an order. Within the limits of its 3-digit display, it's as accurate as any of my others. Re: [Elecraft] Prep time
Mike, The soldering station you have in mind will do just fine; I am sure. Personally, I have used Weller soldering tools. I use them at work and am just "used" to them. The one that you're looking at from Jameco looks like it will do the job just fine. As far as the DVM goes, I didn't use the capacitance measuring features on mine when I built my K1 and K2. The voltage and resistance settings were all that I used. I have Flukes at work; but really can't bring one of those home. I used my 'lil one that I bought from Radio Shack. It's quite simple; but did a fine job. [Elecraft] Orderd a T! and serial interface. Input wantedon DSPmodule.
I am glad a 100W test was conducted. It is in high SWR that a tuner shows its true colors. Take this other companies record. We all know this company. I would say all hams have owned one of their skimpy tuner/watt/swr/dummy load all in ones. They are infamouse for parts not firmly in place.(HAVE I GIVEN ENOUGH HINTS :)I !) They rate their tuner at 300W. I fried 2 of them with 100-200W. The 300W dummy load To make a long story short, many have found that it will handle 300W with a flat SWR. The tuner should really be rated at 150W (3:1 SWR.) I feel good that the T1 can handle bursts of 100W. It means the tuner is over built. It means I can tune at 15W. I do not have to worry about a 3:1 SWR saturating a toroid.. My K2 is stuffed with Laptop PC lithium cells. I have 72 Watt-Hours under the hood. So the external tuner fits the bill. I am considering weather proofing a T! and place it at antenna. I would use lic. free RX/TX links for control. I also ordered the PC interface. Someone asked me could I not use a PC to process the mic audio, so it will have a wave shape that looks like it had 10db of RF compression. Wow that is some very heavy fourier analysis work! [Elecraft] K2 S/N 4787 Build In Progress
Hi Everyone, First my thanks to everyone who has responed to my previous email on the same subject. Just a quick progress report. I've proceeded thru part one alignment of the RF board. Functioned as designed!! Also have finished the voltage(?), freq counter and RF probes. The only additional situation I've found is that the masking tape on the cover parts is not as described. My thanks to everyone on their suggestions on capacitor values. As most RF board capacitor are inserted after part one I still haven't determined how I am going to handle them. Some are simliar to those on the two earlier boards and they should prove no problem. The problems will be the ceramic disk and the dipped little blue guys. The ceramic only have a simple number and in many cases that number is not in the parts list. I've made good progress thus far in IDing parts as all test thus far have been successful. So, I'm relatively confident I'll be able to somehow work them out at the right time. The missing parts I refered to earlier appear to have been found. No panic there. Someone also mentioned about joing in a CW net Sunday night. I'm not sure I'll be ready by then. Still got lots of work including sorting out caps and winding torrids. Stuffing the board and soldering is a breeze...other things take more time. Have a great day! Jim, AB0UK __ Celebrate Yahoo!'s 10th Birthday! Yahoo! [Elecraft] Re: kx1 antennas
"3 resonate wires mated on 3 banana plugs will eliminate the need for the KXAT1" I'll add my $0.02 here. If you use a 1/4-wave radiator (33' on 40m) then you need a 1/4-wave radial "system". I say "system" because you should use 4 radial wires to make effective vertical antenna with elevated radials. You might have to play with the actual lengths to get everything resonant, just like you would have to do for a dipole. You can hook the ends of the wires to the BNC-to-Banana adaptor to eliminate the feedline but you still want to make a good vertical antenna "system" that works well. Using a tuner eliminates the need for "pruning" the lengths to get the antenna to resonate at the desired operating frequency. I think of a single 1/4-wave wire as a "counterpoise" which is not the same thing as an effective radial system. The "counterpoise" is used with a random wire antenna and is usually 1/4-wave long and brings the transmitter end to ground potential. If you have a 1/4-wave wire antenna and a 1/4-wave counterpoise wire, then you basically have a low dipole with half of it near (or on) the ground. I have learned that getting a match is not the only thing to worry about. You also want an antenna that radiates the signal nicely. I put up a random wire once at a park and the KX1 found a perfect match. I called CQ many times with no takers. Later, I put up a 1/2-wave inverted vee supported by an SD-20 pole fed with cheap 300-ohm twinlead and the Elecraft balun. This worked great and I had many QSOs that day on all 3 bands. On other days, however, I have had great QSOs with just the random wire, with and without a counterpoise. There are many variables in how well a certain antenna works: band conditions, power output, the radiation pattern - where the lobes from the random wire fall, what trees are in the way, the height of the wire, etc. If the band is in good enough shape, even the Miracle Whip can result in a QSO! 72, John W2XS KX1 #15 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Elecraft T1 ATU passes brief stress-tests at 100 W
The T1 is rated at 20 W SSB/CW and 10 W FM/AM/digital modes, but we wanted to make sure it could survive brief operation at much higher power levels. One of our field testers set up the tuner on all bands using three different antennas, then transmitted at 100 watts intermittently. As expected, the T37-size cores in the T1's SWR bridge became quite warm and eventually saturated. However, they recovered quickly after they were allowed to cool, and there was no damage to the unit. Another of our field-testers did extensive testing at 40 watts to simulate the use of back-packing amps. The T1's SWR bridge transformers again got very warm, but did not saturate until he increased the duty cycle (by going key down for longer intervals). These results suggest that operation at the T1's rated power of 20 W peak will be quite safe, even with high-SWR loads. It's nice to know that the risk of damage is low if the operator accidentally transmits at 100 W, or might require brief use of the T1 at up to 40 W in an emergency communications situation. 73, Wayne, N6KR Eric, WA6HHQ --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. On Mar 5, 2005, at 3:27 AM, Stewart Baker wrote: Anyone any experience of, or thoughts about adding another 3 crystals to the K2 2nd crystal filter ? Hi Stewart, The present 2-crystal filter (as on newer units, or older units with the 2nd XFIL mod) is very carefully designed to provide different bandwidths on CW and SSB. Equally important, this filter must be centered at the same frequency as the main filter over the full controllable bandwidth range. L34 and related circuitry, along with the varactor diode, accomplish these tasks. If you wanted to add more crystals here for the purpose of improving ultimate attenuation, two crystal filters switched by pin diodes would be needed, along with a complete re-design of all associated circuitry (I.F. amp output, product detector input, CW/SSB control, bandwidth control in the CW case). This would be very difficult and time-consuming, and the resulting circuit would not fit in the present location. That would require the use of coax cables to a separate module, along with other potential issues such as RF pickup. Chances are the result would not be much of an improvement. If your goal is to improve ultimate attenuation, the KDSP2 is a much saner route. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - 2nd Xtal Filter
Hello Stewart, Tail end IF Filter: Given that the prime purpose of the 2nd IF Crystal filter is to reduce wideband noise created by the MC1350 IF amplifier, which comes out as audio "hiss", yes a better filter would do a better job provided that it is wider than the SSB filter. BUT I suspect that the MC1350 would not be happy driving such a filter with its varying input impedance. More distortion / intermod would result than when driving the two crystal filter. The other possibility is that the drive to the AGC system could "bounce" due to these impedance variations, and depending on time constants etc oscillation at some frequency high or low could result. An Image Reject Demodulator can eliminate the need for any "tail end" filter, but no room, AGC Take-off point. Here I am guessing. It could be 1) To reduce the BFO signal leaking through the demodulator that might drive the AGC. The filter chops this down. 2) A simple matter of drive level 3) To reduce AGC Attack delay. 73.
