[Elecraft] KPA100 problem

2005-03-15 Thread David Honey
I've been testing the KPA100 that I've just finished building and have
found a problem.

The symptoms are a little weird, so bear with me.

On 40m and 80m SSB, once the K2 PWR control is set to 11W or over, the
RF output corresponds to peak full power. This seems to be frequency
dependent
and the audio frequency at which peak power is delivered changes between
USB and
LSB. When I whistle into the mike, I see full output on a scope and the
power
indication on the K2 also shows full scale, and the K2/KPA is drawing
around 20A.
If I turn the power to 10W, I see the expected power level on these two
bands.
If I turn the PA menu option to OFF, then power delivery throughout the
power range

0.1 to 15W is as expected.

On these two bands, CW power control is fine with the PA turned on, and
varies

as expected from 0-10, and then with tha PA on from 11W to 100W+.
On 160m, 30m, 20m, SSB (USB and LSB) power delivery is correct.
I didn't try any bands higher than 20m for this.

So the problem seems to be PA ON only, affecting SSB only (USB and LSB)
and only on two bands. The base K2 seems fine on these two bands within its
normal 15W range. It appears as if there is a PA ALC/power control problem
on these two bands in SSB mode.

All the resistance checks and voltage checks during construction were fine.
The only ones that were slightly off were the PA transistor base
resistance check.

I measured 11.6 ohms instead of the 12-18 ohms indicated on my DMM.
All the others were within spec.I figured that 11.6 was within 5% of 12 and
that might be DMM inaccuracy.

Any ideas where to start looking for the problem?

Thanks,
David, M0DHO.

[Elecraft] K2 S/N 4787 First QSO

2005-03-15 Thread Jim Harris
Hi to everyone,

Got the SSB and NB installed and decided it was time
for that first QSO. A friend across town was happy to
oblige. He was impressed with the audio. He recorded
it and it sounds nice when played back. Received
audio sounds a little tinnymaybe it is just my
headphones and the tiny speaker. During the qso I
realized that either there is no mike gain adjust or
it's buried in a menu that I can't remember. Anyone
know where that might be? I'm using the Elecraft/Heil
MD-2 microphone. The mike is almost as big as the
radio. hi hi

I've realigned the 4 mhz and PLL three times against
WWV and my friend says I am still 20-30 hz off. Does
it settle down at some point or do I need to chase it
every few days? My shack runs in the low 60 degrees
and doesn't vary much. It's in the basement with a
small space heater.

Maybe related to the above, support at elecraft has
decided I need the 12 microhenry inductor instead of
the 10. That is based on a PLL range of 9.44 which,
of course, is lower than than the minimum of 9.8. It
should be here in a few days and we will see if that
improves the stability.

Twice when transmitting on 40 meters the over current
indication appeared. I hit the display and max on 10
watts was 2.2 amps. Per supports suggestion I had set
upper limit at 3.5 amps earlier. The 13.8 volts input
is fused at 3 amps fast open so I wonder if the
measuring circuit had a momentarily glitch. The over
current did not open the fuse. Any thoughs on this
one time, so far, glitch.

Hopefully, today or tomorrow I'll get the 60 and 160
meter mods installed. Then to get a new wire antenna
up and then start looking at a DSP and KPA 100. Not
to worry, I've got nine antennas on an 80x100 ft city
lotone wire is being replaced. Where does the fun
ever end..(when it comes time to pay the
credit card)

Jim, AB0UK

Gentlefolk,

I am part of a group of fellow Amateurs who have been working on
homebrew phasing Direct Conversion Tranceivers for a while now.

Details of our first attempt can be found at: -

www.stevef.demon.co.uk/qrp2k/qrp2000home.htm

and the later iteration is at
http://www.qrp2001.freeserve.co.uk/background.htm .

Design and prototyping for the QRP2004 is well underway and will be
published when we can get round to it. These are homebrew designs, the sad
thing is that we were trying to get someone with more time that we have to
kit them however there was little interest at the time we presented the
QRP2000 at Dayton. I think we have all built, or in my case are building K2s
as well. There is something about the clarity of the audio from a DC RX
which superhets never manage to achieve. The first ham project I ever made
was a Sudden DCRX uring the venerable NE602...I had a lot of fun with
itand was hooked

Bye for now,

With my K2 set for optimum xmit audio, I find the receive audio tends to cut
off more of the lows than I like on some signals. The ideal bandpass
definitely changes with the voice on the other end. So I have FL2 set using
the OPT1 filter for a BFO frequency that shifts the bandpass slightly to
produce more bass in the signal (bandpass closer to the carrier freq). That
gives me way to shift the tone of the received signal by changing filters.
The settings for FL1 are *always* used for xmit, no matter what filter
position you are using for receive, so adjusting the other filter positions
to suit your taste will not have any affect on your transmit audio.

Mic gain is set via an attenuator and then automatically adjusted in the
speech processor I.C. The mic attenuator control is available under MENU
option SSBA. SSBA 1 attenuates the audio by 10 dB. SSB 2 or 3 provides full
gain with no attenuation.

One of the features that gives the K2 receiver its 'edge' in hearing weak
signals over many of the other rigs is that the K2 does *not* use a
fully-synthesized local oscillator. With that superior receive performance
comes a trade-off: the K2 simply is not as stable as those other rigs with
fully-synthesized L.O.s in crystal ovens. Still, current K2's are very, very
good, but it deserves a good 15-minute warm-up.

One other issue that affects your frequency readout is the ability of the K2
to reset the oscillators to a specific frequency. When you calibrate your
K2, the analog voltages used to tune the oscillators are converted into
digital values and stored as digital data in memory. When you tune in a
specific frequency, the logic looks up those digital values and converts
them back into the proper analog tuning voltages. This conversion back and
forth is done by Digital to Analog Converters or DACs. DACs have a
specific amount of accuracy. More accuracy requires bigger numbers and more
memory. The tradeoff that Elecraft used between memory and accuracy puts the
K2 within about 20 or 30 Hz of the expected frequency.

That said, one might ask how accurate the other guy's rig is. A quick check
for you is to tune in WWV. Give your K2 a 15 minute warm-up at least, then
zero beat WWV's carrier and check your K2's frequency display. I just turned
on my K2 a few minutes ago and it's showing WWV at 1.01 kHz right now -
10 Hz high.

[Elecraft] K2/100 and Ten Tec Titan

2005-03-15 Thread kt5d
Talk about QRP sacrilege .. I moved the OMNI 6+ out of the way and
connected the K2/100 to the Titan 425 amp. No RF feedback, no thumps, no
instabilities; just a little flicker of the room lights and 1500 watts of rock
solid QSK RF. Whens the next contest?

[Elecraft] Initial LCD Display Results

2005-03-15 Thread vze3v8dt
Okay, here is my first post to the group during assembly/test. This
seems minor and may not really be a problem, just want to make sure.
During the checks the first time the unit is powered up I get an
annunciator for PRE. It was not specified as such in the manual. The
PRE/ATTN button seems to work as it cycles relays and the annunciator
moves from PRE to ATT to blank and then back to PRE again. I
haven't yet tested to see if the correct relay is actually powered or
not for each setting, however. I also see that if I turn the radio off
it comes back on at whatever frequency I had last left it, however if I
also set the PRE/ATT to blank when I power cycle it comes back on
with PRE. Is this normal or is it a minor bug I need to troubleshoot?

Thanks in advance for the responses!

Re: [Elecraft] Which KSB2 bandwith do you like?

The current KSB2 uses the 2.2 kHz bandwidth, as designed by John KI6WX.
This is probably a good choice for most hams. There are a few who like
more fidelity in their audio, and opt for the 2.5 kHz bandwidth.
Several builders have recounted this change. The only con on the wider
bandwidth is you are more susceptible to adjacent QRM.

The original KSB2 had about a 2.0 kHz bandwidth, which I thought was
adequate. I'm one of the few who has opted for the 1.9 kHz filter. It
really isn't any narrower than the original 2.0 kHz filter -- but it
has a lot less passband ripple. Since much of my K2 use is during radio
contests, I prefer the narrower bandwidth.

When you order your KSB2, you can ask Elecraft for the appropriate cap
values for any of these filters. I think they can handle that.

Re: [Elecraft] Which KSB2 bandwith do you like?

2005-03-15 Thread Stewart Baker
Paul,

My filter has the 2.5kHz capacitor values fitted. The bandwidth I get is less
than that, probably 2.2kHz-2.3kHz. To my ear this is about right, and feel that
anything less would start sounding too restricted.
It also seems to give a good response curve for rag chewing and DX/contest
operation.

I would recommend grounding the crystals at their bases, however be careful not
to use too much heat or damage the crystal case seals.
