Hello,

I've got a K1 and K2. This past weekend I spent all my free time
with the K1 on 30 meters and the K2 hunting around 20 and 40 for the
QRPTTF stations. The K1 got more action for me but of course your
mileage may vary as they say.

I made it to Gatlinburg, TN in the Smokies. About 200 miles so far, 26
days. Its been cold and wet for too long. Sprained my Achiles tendon about
30 miles back. Been limping since. Its worse first thing in the morning,
but after I limber it up some I can hike okay, but been doing very short
miles. Hopefully a day or two in town and some hot soaking will help. Then
I'm taking an easier route out of the Smokies, other than the AT along the
high ridges. I found some valley trails to connect up to get back to the
AT at the north end of the park. Should be a more interesting walk too.

Haven't had much chance to use the radio lately. Been too cold and wet for
the most part.

Talk to you next time I find internet access.

Yes and no. Building from scratch with new parts bought in small quantities
from "regular" sources rarely saves any money. Kits are a different story
because the kit company can get volume discounts.

If you scratchbuild with parts from irregular sources, it becomes a different
game entirely. Two of my Southgate projects use variable capacitors from WW2
freqmeters. Those caps must have cost a fortune in their day - but they cost
me only a dollar or two in surplus.

Here in the USA, from the mid 1950s to about the early 1970s, they were the
least expensive way for a ham to get on the air with new gear. In most cases
you couldn't buy the parts new for what the kit cost. When the HW-101 appeared,
about 1968, it cost about $300 with AC power supply. What other new rig could
compare with the '101s features in its time?

Yep - which is one reason we don't see the rapid growth in amateur radio that
we saw years and decades ago, when ham radio was about the only way the
average person could do long-distance electronic communications.

There should be a warning sticker on every Elecraft box that it will ruin you
for appliances

But even if you bought one already built - what rig can compete with the K2?

[Elecraft] Why I build. Why I bother...

2005-05-02 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
In the years before television, our family enjoyed something that was
attractive enough to pull me away from my Philmore crystal set with its
finicky "cats whisker" that had to be set just right to hear the whisper of
broadcast stations in my headphones. Our whole family would visit a large
railway station a few miles away. My older brother, Mom, Dad and I spent
many happy warm summer evenings there on the station platform watching the
steam locomotives chugging back and forth along sidings assembling cars into
trains. The ballet of moving rail cars was interrupted from time to time by
a passenger train arriving at the platform, the car windows filled with the
faces of travelers arriving from a distant city.

To this kid, watching one of those huge steam locomotives hauling a long
train clanking, chugging and blowing off steam as it stopped only a few feet
away from me was almost as exhilarating as snagging clear-channel radio
station KFI on my Philmore late at night.

Almost. I guess that's why I ended up in electronics instead of working on
the railroad.

Technology has given me many great tools. There's a lot that I can see on TV
that expands my world. There's even more on the World-Wide Web. Still, those
appliances tend to isolate me from the real world. It's the difference
between driving my MGA roadster and cruising along in an air-conditioned,
sound-insulated luxury car. The modern car may offer greater convenience and
comfort, but it does so at the cost of isolating me from the world outside.

There's more than nostalgia or the necessity of saving money in tinkering
with homebrew designs and assembling kits. It's a search for a balanced life
in which we make time to experience things that interest us "up close and
personal". It's coaxing an unlikely collection of parts into herding
electrons around so we can pick up the movement of a telegraph key or the
sounds of a voice from a distant place.

It's a sense of "wonder" - like seeing that giant steam locomotive roll to a
stop next to me all those years ago.

How can a person be healthy without experiencing a sense of "wonder" every
day?

RE: [Elecraft] K1

2005-05-02 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Tom,

You 'MUST' have a K1 with a 2 band board to cover 80 meters, and you can put
17 or 15 meters for the other band - or convert it to 160 meters for the
duration of the sunspot lull. Your KX1 does not cover these bands.

The K2 will stay at home while the KX1 and K1 go on outings with you.
Alternately, order the K1- 4 band board too and plan the K1 for the base
station at camp while the KX1 goes on day hikes with you.

Is that sufficient for an excuse?

Re: RE: [Elecraft] K2 drifting?

2005-05-02 Thread vze3v8dt
Hi Rich,

Thanks for the detailed description. I think I'm getting it now. Sometimes
I'm a bit slow, sometimes I'm a bit fast, I guess I have a high amount of
jitter on my clock (sorry, it is a work related joke, and probably a poor one
at that).

Now, I think I only have three more questions (for now) based on your
description. What is the mod that you are referring to? I have a nearly brand
new K2 (S/N 4786), so is the mod already implemented by Elecraft in my kit or
is it yet another mod I should do? In my case the radio was on for well over
one hour, so it should have been nice & stable.

Next question is once the filter calibrations & settings are done I understand
how it could be off by as little as 1 Hz or as much as 20 Hz from OP1. Is this
value consistent once things are set or does it vary each time the filter is
switched in/out? If for example the K2 is done being set up and FL4 is
activated (which mine is and is set for 1000 Hz center frequency and 700 Hz
BW), it may be say 5 Hz low. If I switch it to OP1 it should be right on with
Tx & Rx, if I switch to FL2, FL3 or FL4 it could be off by as little as 1 Hz or
as much as 20 Hz, but will FL4 always be off by 5 Hz (unless I change filter
calibration settings)?

Final question for now is related to the DSP filter I just installed. I set up
DSP filters which I still need to play with to get a feeling for, but
essentially expect them to act as a brick wall for signals outside their
parameters. While I know they are audio and not IF filters so if I have a very
strong station nearby while I'm using OP1 on Tx & Rx and a very narrow DSP
filter I may not get the best function out of the filtering. So, I would then
use a combination of FL2/FL3/FL4 as appropriate and then add DSP as well. Oh,
the question is if I use OP1 for Tx & Rx and a narrow DSP filter I don't think
the DSP will change the frequency at all like the FL2 - FL4 filters would, is
that correct? So, assuming that is the case, maybe I always want to use OP1
and the desired DSP filter and then just add FL2 to FL4 as needed. I guess I
just have to play with it and see what works best for me in given
circumstances.

[Elecraft] 40m transmitter alignment problem

2005-05-02 Thread Rolf Moberg, OH6KXL

Hello!

I have built my K2 s/n 4759. I'm in the page 75, 40m transmitter alignment.

K2 is powered by battery and K2 has been connected to dummy load. I set
power to 2.0 watts and switched to 40m band CW. K2 is taking about 220 mA.

When holding TUNE I hear a short BEEP in headphones. Power meter is
displaying 0.1 or 0.2. Adjustment of L1 or L2 doesn't affect to power level.

I spent couple of hours reading the manual. It seems I should buy a
signal generator to do receiver and transmitter signal tracing. Receiver
is working. I heard signals in 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m and noise level
fluctuated normally in the rest of the bands. My antenna were not tuned
to any band in that time. My analysis is the problem cannot be in 40m
filtering because in receive mode L1 and L2 peak definitely for best signal.

What to do next?
Remove heat sink and check visually the soldering again?

Should I hear sidetone ALL THE TIME when TUNE mode is activated? I hear
only short BEEP when activating TUNE.

Re: [Elecraft] How many kits

Howdy Paul,
I get serial numbers on the net so can give you a rough estimate. The
KX1 series is over 1000, the K2 series is nearing 5000, K1s are somewhere
around 2000. So totalling this give close to 8000 kits not including all
the fiddly bits.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 drifting?

2005-05-02 Thread Rich Lentz
The RTTY or Digital filters are available on the newer versions of
"firmware" and allow a complete set of filters tuned and setup specifically
for RTTY or digital modes, however they must be enabled. The manual
explains this Or if you have an older K2 with an upgraded MCU then you need
to look at the newer manual.

The major point is that - 1. it is almost impossible to get any of the
narrower filters within 1 Hz of the main (OP1) filter that is used for
transmit in all cases regardless of which filter is selected. 2. The PSK
program will transmit a tone equal to what the PSK program thinks is the
received signal frequency - however, that is off frequency by 1 to as much
as 20/30 Hz. from the actual received frequency when ANY filter is used
other than OP1 because the K2 switches to OP1 in transmit. (The offset can
be observed by tuning in a solid carrier and switching filters.) 3. If the
other Party has AFC turned on then he will now transmit at that new
frequency and thus the drift or actually frequency starts walking up/down
the band.

If you don't have AFC turned on then you will continue to transmit at the
same frequency, unless you reset the signal to the new frequency. If at
least one of the two parties involved does not have AFC turned on then Drift
is less likely to happen.

There is a small amount of drift in the K2 (less with the Temp Stabilizing
MOD) from cold start for about 15 - 30 Minutes. Thus the above discussion
assumes that 1. you have the temp stabilizing mod installed and 2. the rig
has been on for about 30 minutes.

Rich

--

Oh, good point. I forgot to mention that I was using FL4 which was
specifically set up for 1000 Hz center frequency and 700 Hz bandwidth.

I thought that FL4 was specifically set up for digital modes. Does that
mean "other" digital modes like RTTY and that PSK31 should be run with
OP1 instead?

[Elecraft] LAITF This Saturday!

2005-05-02 Thread W2AGN
Maybe we'll have better weather/band conditions for this Staurday's 2nd Annual
LAITF Contest. Another great excuse to get off your..base stations, and
into the field.

--

Every year we take our radios out in the field, woods, or parks and operate.
Now let's add the dimension of observing the wildlife around us and make it a
part of the operating event, which we will call Look Around In The Field or
LAITF. The exchange will include the name of some wildlife you have seen on
that day. This contest was held last year, and is being run by W2AGN this
year with the permission of the originator, Randy K7TQ.

CONTEST PERIOD: May 7, 2005 1600-2100Z. CW ONLY.

* Wildlife means some animal that you have seen since you left home for
LAITF. It could be a deer, a moose, a squirrel, an egret, or a fly.
* Ants and other bugs will work, too.
* Heck, we'll even count dogs and cats here! Just for good measure
everyone can send "human" just by seeing one.
* Send a different wildlife name for each QSO or the same one every time,
but make sure you have actually seen it before you send its name. It is your
choice if you send "hawk", "red tailed hawk", or "buteo jamaicensis".
* You've got to look around and not just concentrate on the radio for this
operating event!
  Rules
  o Exchange
+ State, Province, or Country (S/P/C)
+ Your name
+ Wildlife name

  o QSO Points

[Elecraft] Incorrect installation C6 on my K2

2005-05-02 Thread George W Whatley
Hi all:

I made the same mistake no4d made on installing C6. I have built many
kits, so have experience. I agree the instructions could be clearer on
which holes to use. I used the two leftmost instead of the two outer
holes. In other words, I used holes 1 and 2, instead of holes 1 and 3.
Builder beware! Hope this keeps others from making same mistake.

Re: [Elecraft] RE: Can Elecraft take over the global HF ham radiobusiness ?

2005-05-02 Thread g4ilo
There's a generalization I strongly disagree with. It is almost always more
expensive to build than to buy something of the same specification.
Heathkits, if I recall correctly, were never particularly cheap.

Ham radio, for me, is not just about operating. If I want to make contact
with people around the world, I can use the Internet.

I build for the enjoyment of it, and because to make radio contacts using
something I have built myself feels like more of an achievement than making
contacts using a shop-bought radio. The fact that I have got bored with
every commercial radio I have ever owned, while my K2 is still here, is the
proof of it.

RE: [Elecraft] weird power stuff

2005-05-02 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
It may sound obvious, but is that resistor soldered in on both ends?

Any possible solder bridge at either end?

Is the resistor intermittent? They do "break" - even modern film ones. Maybe
*especially* film ones if they've been slightly damaged. I small crack in
the outer cover can lead to a crack in the resistance element that pushes
the value all over the place.

If things are really strange, back up a step to where it worked last. If
everything looks perfect, put the original resistor back in and see if the
problem persists.

99.9% of the time a failure like that has to do with the thing you touched
last, no matter how unlikely it seems.

[Elecraft] weird power stuff

2005-05-02 Thread Lloyd Lachow
While operating my K2, using the ATU with a balun
for my 300 ohm twinlead-fed loop, sometimes I've
suddenly noticed that my power out, while
transmitting, is showing only two bars, instead of the
five or six I should be seeing. If I hit tune, I
sometimes get "nothing" - no bars, and the display
says lo power. After trying a couple of things -
switching bands, or holding TUNE and DISPLAY together,
I'll get it to tune up and act normally again.
Sometimes after getting it going again, it shows all
ten bars lit up at first, then reverts to the five or
six. I did just change R98 on the RF board from 270 to
1K, which mostly resolved my too-high power out
problem.

  Any ideas...? Thanks...

[Elecraft] C6

2005-05-02 Thread Jeremiah McCarthy
For what it is worth, the 3 solder points at C6 are not vias per se, they are
the location of a connector header for the 60 meter expansion module...If the
expansion module is not installed, the connector header is not installed and C6
is installed in it's place...The center hole of these 3 holes is a ground and
is not used when C6 is installed...The C6 error seems to be common, I have seen
at at least half a dozen times...The result is no 40 meter reception in Part II
alignment and testing...

explain what vias were because they looked like pads (and about the same
size). Luckily they stopped at that point as they were confused.<

Re: [Elecraft] How many kits

2005-05-02 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Hello Paul,

I don't know Paul, but going by the K2 serial numbers there must be some
4500 K2s out there, and that's a lot of one product especially for a young
Company. I recall the long hours of discussion spent at RCA working out how
many of a certain type of SSB transceiver should be built in the first
production run - 500 was the choice. Eventually about 1000 were sold into
the point to point market worldwide, which was a large share.

Personally I prefer to build my radios for many of the reasons that have
been mentioned already. Perhaps one of the main reasons, and this is
especially true for receivers, is that it is possible to keep ahead of the
black box manufacturers when it comes to the performance of the device,
sometimes by a few years, without having to sell one's wife, cat and dog in
order to get that top end performance. Furthermore one must not forget
Property Rights that could prevent some company from incorporating a piece
of serious circuitry, and they might not get there if the R&D budget is
small. The big price that the homebrewer pays is, of course, time to do
this. So years ago I adopted the modular approach to construction where
possible, and the work in progress concept, upgrading as technology moved
along. And I am very sure that there is a large number of amateurs who do
something similar for whatever reason. With respect to your friend I wonder
how he came to his conclusion and what he means by *very few*.

Having said all that, if money was no object I might buy the best black box
for my purposes, slow down the homebrewing a little keeping the black box as
a backup. But personally I would find it difficult to choose between the
black boxes because it appears to me that this year's model is last year's
model plus a thing or two, or minus a thing or two.

K2 is the only kit or commercially manufactured radio that I have owned in
58 years of ham radio, and it is a very much appreciated member of the shack
community.

Geoff
