Re: [Elecraft] K2 Speaker Replacement

2005-07-26 Thread kevin schuchmann

Hi James,
I would order one from Elecraft, it is the one you `must have', it has an
output spl of 95 db which is very good efficiency, if you were to replace it
with anything else you have to match that number or better or the audio out
will be at a lower level for the same volume setting.

Well I did it. By accident at field day I overloaded the K2's speaker
with too strong a signal and with the volume accidentally turned up
and I think I blew it out. It sounds like crap now.. yet plugging in
an external speaker sounds just fine. Should I contact Elecraft for a
replacement or is there some speaker that is a 'must have' to replace
the internal one? Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] KAT100 with another radio

2005-07-26 Thread Jack Brindle
This one is very easy to accomplish. You just open the case to the
Icom, remove everything inside, then install a K2 in the now empty case.

Seriously, the KAT100 uses information provided directly by the K2 as
communicated through the Elecraft K2 Auxbus. Thus the KAT100 will
only work with the K2.

But, The Elecraft T1 tuner should do the trick for you. Check it out
at www.elecraft.com.

RE: [Elecraft] 15 meters high vco voltage

2005-07-26 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Roland,

Bands from 14 mHz and up typically have plenty of excess range - you
certainly have something wrong.

If things seem to change on you, you can be certain you have a bad solder
connection somewhare in the VCO area.

Concentrate on C73 - that is the only capacitor added for 15 meters, and
relay K13 which controls whether it is in or out of the circuit.

While you are checking things, take a look at D23 through D26 - they should
be MV209 type - that is the larger of the 2 varactor types and if you look
down on the top of them they will look like a full semicircle - the 1SV149
type is the smaller body and looks like a flattened semicircle when viewed
from the top. If the varactors are not correct, the fixed capacitors will
not provide the proper tuning range.

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] KRC2 F/W Upgrade - problems

2005-07-26 Thread Marcus Busch [DL1EKC]
Hi Elecrafters,

just decided to upgrade my KRC2 firmware from V1.0 to V1.3.

I installed the KRC2 Download Utility V1.1, connected my KRC2 to the PC,
set the switch to download. Then I made the following:

- Press button "Get F/W Rev."
- KRC2 responds "V1.0"
- selected the HEX file
- press "Download KRC2", KRC2 LED starts flashing
- program says "KRC2 failed to reply" (well, it did before ?)

After trying this several times I decided to switch off Options/Ack Req'd
and started again. Now no error message comes up, but ...

NOW MY KRC2 IS COMPLETELY DEAD. Upon power-on the LED comes up in DIM
mode, but nothing more happens. It doesn't set any outputs nor does it
reply on button presses.

Well, I think, my KRC2 lost its brain. I have a programmer available. So
no difficult task to flash the MCU directly, but the HEX-file supplied
seems to be a somehow modified INTEL HEX file. What do I have to do in
order to put life back into the MCU ?

Your help is very welcome.

[Elecraft] Re: reciever now tuning, speaker wrks FB!

2005-07-26 Thread Roland
Ok, it is all working now! I'm can't believe how I tried to be careful and
still made so many mistakes. C73 was the problem. I should have known
because I ran short of 820 caps and had an extra 470. Changed out C73 and
everything came to life. 40,30,15 meters all tune now. Oh the sweet sweet
sound of CW. And the SSB sounds good too.
Here's the really funny one. Where did P5 on the rf board come from? And
who put it there? I've been messing with the control board all this time!
%!!*!!! hi hi
Once I found the correct P5 it worked FB... the speaker that is. Gosh, I
found other things too. D39 wasn't installed. X5 & X6 crystals not
grounded. I'm sure there is other stuff.
I need to do all the alignments and VCO checks again. I'll do both Phase II
and Phase III. I've done it several times now so no sweat.
Anyways, A very big THANK YOU to you Don Wilhelm W3FPR and the group. I'm
very novice on this stuff but with you folks there, it's what made this rig
work. Without the group, this would have been a waste of money. Now it's
an awesome rig. I still got a couple of minor glitches but I'm going to see
if the re alignments take care of it. (still flutters when I tune).
Thanks again! I'll be back to let you all know how it goes. I'm starting a
7 day stretch at work for swing shift so won't have much radio time for a
while.

RE: [Elecraft] 40 meter reciever not tuning

2005-07-26 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Roland,

Are the other bands still the same as they used to be? The high voltage
indicates that the PLL is attempting to reduce the capacity of the
varactors - which means that there is too much capacity in the VFO circuit
somewhere for those bands. Check the value of C73 - it should be marked
'470'.

The only thing that is common for 30m and 15m is C73 (also common for 40
meters if the K60XV option is installed). Go to the secondary menu and be
certain the D19 parameter is set to OFF.

You might check for solder splashes in the vicinity of Relay K13.

73,
Don W3FPR

RE: [Elecraft] 40 meter reciever not tuning

2005-07-26 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Roland,

The speaker plugs into P5 on the RF Board - P5 on the Control Board is for
use with an external probe to the internal voltmeter in the K2 (only active
if the P3 jumper is set for EXT).

If I misunderstood your intent and you were actually referring to P5 on the
RF Board, then your headphone jack likely will not work either. You should
have continuity between the junction of RF Board R35 and R36 and RF Board P5
with the headphone plug removed. If you have continuity there AND the
headphone jack has audio, the speaker should work - unless you swapped
conductors at either the speaker plug or the external speaker jack.

I can tell now that there is continuity from the speaker jack to the control
board. I don't get continuity from P3 to P5 on the control board. The
schematic makes it look like a clean shot. When I tried to trace it on the
board point to point, I get lost. Seems like it's going through a lot of
coponents. If it is a straight shot, perhaps there is a break in the path
on the board. Could I rig a separate jumper wire to P5 from P3?
