[Elecraft] K2 receiver problem

2005-11-09 Thread GS
Hi list,

got a K2 from another OM on my workbench. It's got a
receiver problem and I just want to make sure I do the
checks in the correct order and I'm looking for hints,
if available!

Thanks in advance!

So here's the problem and what I want to do. It seems
the receiver runs with "handbrake on". So the s-meter
shows 3 bars without an antenna but the rf gain is
fully clockwise. I can reduce signals to zero (using
RF gain) with this K2 which I can't using my own K2.
So mine has a higher sensitivity.

Any idea what's wrong?

What I want to do:
- s-meter alignment
- I.F. amplifier alignment
- (maybe band pass alignment)
- signal tracing receiver and synthesizer

Kind regards

Gerhard

[Elecraft] KNB2 trouble...

2005-11-09 Thread LA2MOA
Hi all!

I´ve just finished installation of the KNB2 into my K2. When tapping
the "NB-button" on the K2, the display shows "Not Inst". I have
re-examined the KNB2 board. U3 is installed/soldered correctly and as
far as I can see no other components are installed incorrectly or
backwards. I have also made a few measurements on P12 on the KNB2
board and on U3, where pin 1 measures 6.1 volts and pin 8 measures 0
Ohm´s so everything seems to be correct.

The modifications on the K2 RF board in order to install the KNB2
module are made according to the instructons in the KNB2 manual.
While examining the board, everything seems to be correctly done
without any solder bridges.

Still the display shows "Not Inst" while tapping the NB-button.

Any suggestions?

Regards,

Hans / LA2MOA

RE: [Elecraft] KNB2 trouble...

2005-11-09 Thread Don Wilhelm
Hans,

The Not Inst message means only one thing - the KNB2 is not communicating
with the K2 MCU. That comunication occurs over the Auxbus line. That
signal is present at pin 7 of the KNB2 connector.

I suggest that you check for continuity (and shorts) from the K2 Control
board MCU pin 40 to the KNB2 U3 pins 3 and 4 - you should find about 570
ohms (100 on the control board plus 470 on the KNB2). If you find anything
different than that, check the path against the schematics to find the
source of the problem.

[Elecraft] Re: K1 - Why Not?

2005-11-09 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
First I must emphasise that I am *not* an Elecraft junky - junkies check
Elecraft's web page when asked by the XYL for a new washing machine 'just in
case'. But I have just finished the KX-1 and am *more* than impressed. And I
really enjoyed building it (no smoke, flames or burnt fingers).

Question: just how good is the K1's receiver? I am thinking about taking a
radio to the Isle of Man with me when I go there on holiday (I am also
GD4ELI). Also I travel a bit to Finland visiting customers.

The K1 does look very attractive, easy to pack, add a simple PSU / 3Ah
batteries, Kent paddles, nice pole and I am off. But I have the KX-1 - so I
don't need the K1 as well - or do I?

But I haven't had as much fun in the last 20 years as I did building the
KX-1. Oh dear :-)

RE: [Elecraft] K2 receiver problem

2005-11-09 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gerhardt,

It sounds like the AGC Threshold is not set properly.

I would proceed by first checking the alignment of the bandpass filters in
Transmit mode (at 2 watts) and then set the AGC Threshold for optimum
receiver sensitivity - with no antenna connected and AF and RF Gains set to
max, adjust for the highest voltage at Control Board U2 pin 5 which yields
no change in the audio noise when switching the AGC between OFF and ON.
That will usually result in a voltage in the range of 3.65 to 3.8 volts at
U2 pin 5. Set the S-meter end points (CAL S Hi and CAL S-Lo) after setting
the threshold.

If that does not cure the problem, then look for a problem in the IF receive
chain - that will be where the signal tracing is required, follow the
p[rocedure for receiver signal tracing in the Troubleshooting appendix of
the K2 manual.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 receiver problem

2005-11-09 Thread Dale Boresz

Hello Gerhard,

First, do the AGC threshold adjustment (instructions located at end of
Assembly, Part I in the manual)

Then do the S-Meter Alignment, the instructions of which follow the AGC
threshold adjustment instructions.

It sounds like the AGC is set a bit too aggressively at the moment.

No, you are not being moderated. :-) We frequently do not reply to list

What was the content of the reject message? Can you forward it to me?

It likely was an automatic reject from the qth.net server thinking your

you can be blocked. It usually clears the block in a day or less. If you

forward it to the list.

I'll check out the message and let you know if that was the problem.

[Elecraft] K1 - Why Not?

2005-11-09 Thread Tom Hall
>First I must emphasize that I am *not* an Elecraft junky.
That's how it starts. I built the KX1 first and then the K2 and then the K1.
Soon I looked around at all the other test gear that I bought from Elecraft
and now I'm not too sure how much gear you can buy before qualifying as an
Elecraft junky.
>Question: just how good is the K1's receiver?
Very good - better filters and I found the K1 a bit more sensitive.
Of course this is really not the point, is it? I asked the very same
question here pretty much convinced I was going to buy the K1 anyway. I
don't regret it one bit. The K1 is a great little radio and I often use it
just for a change of pace. The KX1, however, is the radio that goes with me
most often. It's just too easy to take it along with my Par End-Fed antenna
and use it on a whim if there is a little time to kill. If you use the
attachable paddles you have the ultimate in portability and you can even use
the KX1 while standing up.
Building, of course, is half the fun.
Good Luck.

RE: [Elecraft] KIO2

2005-11-09 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gil,

Yes, first concentrate on the low voltage at U1 pin 8 - be sure diodes D1,
D2 and D3 are oriented properly and capacitor C8 is correctly 10 uf and
properly soldered. If that does not bring the voltage up to somewhere
between -6 and -12 volts, look at the oscillator components connected to Q1
(look on the schematic to identify which components).

Once you get a reasonable negative voltage on U1 pin 8, check it again - be
certain you have turned PORT ON in the K2 menu.

There are only 2 signal lines (other than ground) that you need to be
concerned with for communications with the computer - those are TXD and RXD,
and you can ignore the remainder for the time being. Be certain the
miniature inductors indicate continuity first. The computer will control
the voltage on RXD (J1 pin 3 and U1 pin 6), so if that voltage is not
correct blame the computer port or the cable. TXD (J1 pin 2 and U1 pin 5)
on the other hand is controlled by U1 on the KIO2 board - it will be either
a positive or a negative voltage greater than 3 volts (up to 15 is allowed),
but should not be anywhere near zero volts. Whether it is positive or
negative depends on the voltage at U1 pin 12 (either near zero volts or near
5 volts - and this signal originates at the K2 MCU).

I hope that helps you locate the source of the problem.

73,
Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] K2 Strangeness on 160

2005-11-09 Thread Bill Tippett

Over the past month or so, I've been taking
my K2 (#4119) to a remote mountaintop cabin for
R&R with my XYL. This location is quite remote
and previous visits seemed to be very RFI-quiet on
the other bands, so I decided to install a Beverage
on October 12 and try listening on 160. It is ~800'
long and oriented NE to Europe. I have no transmit
antenna but was just curious to see how Top Band
sounded from an extremely RFI-quiet location.

When I first listened, I was surprised to hear
what sounded like a BCI carrier image on 1837.5.
With LCW mode selected, the K2 acted like it was
in UCW when tuning past the carrier. My K2 was
powered by a 7AH SLA, so the only connection to
it was the Beverage feed line. I thought possibly I
was getting some common mode, so on my latest
trip I took along a section of coax with about 50
ferrite beads to attenuate any common mode.
This did not help but I was even further surprised
to copy audio from the BCI speaking in German!
Also, I heard another image below 1810. Both of
these were well before my sunset so I'm assuming
they were images from somewhere higher in frequency.
I should have listened long enough to get an ID but
was more interested in listening for DX at the time.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this on 160?

While listening with the K2, I also noticed the
following:

1. The image was worse on the RX port than
on the Main port. I did use a 50 ohm termination
on the unused antenna port when checking.

2. I noticed with only the 50 ohm termination and
using battery power, I heard a drifty warbling tone that
reminded me of switching power supply birdies. It
is not very strong, but noticeable with both RF and
AF gain near maximum. I wondered it it could have
been my battery, so I tried a linear supply when I
got home but I still hear the same sound. Again, it
sounded slightly worse when listening on the RX
antenna port than the Main port, although it was
clearly audible in both. This is something that
can probably be verified in any unit since it seems
to be internal to the K2.

3. I have a KAF2 in my K2, and noticed when the
clock is selected I hear a "chuff...chuff...chuff"
sound which is in synch with the KAF2's clock
update. This is not a big deal since I can easily
turn it off, but I wonder if anyone has found where
to add a ferrite to eliminate it?

All of these things would not normally be
audible, but I was listening near the K2's noise floor
on an extremely quiet band. 160 was amazing from
this location since I heard F5IN at 2028z yesterday,
which was nearly 2 hours before my sunset. I went
on to log nearly 50 DX stations including RA6AX at
2121z who is very deep into EU Russia (near Asia),
about 1 hour before my sunset.

My K2 seems to work well but I am wondering
if there is something that can cure the things I've
noticed above.

Re: [Elecraft] KIO2

2005-11-09 Thread Jack Brindle
Might there be a short on the output of U1 pin 5? This is a TX output
from the driver chip, and even with the negative supply being low, it
should not be that close to zero, especially with the input at the
high rail. I would suggest looking for a short across C3, L2 to
ground, or even from U1 pin 5 to ground.

L2 may be suspect after you find the short, but it normally fails
open, which means the connector side is probably OK. It is also
possible that U1 is problematic, but I would look for the short
first. When you correct the short, the negative supply should return
to a more reasonable value since it will have a smaller load to drive.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Strangeness on 160

2005-11-09 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bill,

Congratulations on getting the beverage installed - I want to try one here
myself, but I will have to keep the length to less than 500 feet if I point
it toward Europe - that 800 ft beverage should hear quite well.

If I were in your shoes, my first attempt would be to put a parallel tuned
circuit tuned to 160 across the antenna terminals (the feedline to the
beverage). I know it is not the ideal solution, but if your beverage
interest is only in 160 (and not 80 and 40 too), the tuned circuit shoud
reduce any out of band energy significantly.

I just wonder how much energy that BC station is putting onto your beverage.
Also it could be rectification in the antenna connections that is causing
those occurrances - overlook nothing, especially the connections in the
antenna itself.

It would be interesting to try another receiver on that beverage to see if
anything similar appears. What I am saying is that the problem may be
somewhere outside the K2.

Hi Don,

At 02:47 PM 11/9/05, you wrote:

I just wonder how much energy that BC station is putting onto your beverage.

I neglected to say the strongest image
(German language) was lighting 1 or 2 K2 meter
lights with preamp on (no external preamp in use).
I could hear it with all 3 Preamp/Attenuator settings
but of course it got weaker when switching through.

Also it could be rectification in the antenna connections that is causing

My ground rods were fairly short so I may
try changing them if I hear the image on another rig.

It would be interesting to try another receiver on that beverage to see if

somewhere outside the K2.

That's my next step but my Orion is
a little bulkier and needs a real power
supply. I'm also curious to know if anyone
has heard the warbling sound (below) which
must be internal to my K2. I'm trying to
understand if that is a generic problem or
unique to my K2 on 160. I forgot to add that
the tone is only at discrete frequencies as you
tune across 160, and it seems to wander
around like a switching power supply birdie,
i.e. it is not at the same frequency every time
I check it.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: Polar Bear # 1 First Contact Gift!

2005-11-09 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

The Pulpit Rock Polar Bears will again be on the prowl for contacts.
On Sunday, November 13, 2005, a group of Polar Bears otherwise known as
hams, will meet on the AT in PA. Pulpit Rock sits at an elevation of
1582' in the Blue Mountains just above Hamburg, PA. I will again hike
the 2.5 miles up to Pulpit Rock. WA3WSJ, as usual, will hand out a gift
to my FIRST contact. I started this two trips ago so here is the Polar
Bear Gift this time. It's a museum quality replica of a polar bear claw.
Yes it's beautiful and it's around 3.5 inches long! Boy, we polar bears
need big claws to climb. I will also have your call sign engraved into
the claw. This will be just an awesome gift! Please remember that this
is a "museum quality" replica! So keep your ear out for WA3WSJ and if
you're my first contact, it's yours FREE! Here's where to look for me:

CW: 7.040; 14.060
PSK: 14.070

Remember to keep an ear or eye out for WA3WSJ!

p.s.
All you PSKers, If you make contact with me, I will send out a special
PSK31 Pulpit Rock Polar Bear Certificate! So watch for the "small hump"
on your screen as I will be using my PSK-20 rig at 3w output or so. This
bear will do the hard work - now I need you to do the rest!

Ed, WA3WSJ
