Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 Microphones?
hi Fred, With Elecraft marketing a K2 w/SSB option - why would they drop all desk mobile MICROPHONES for this rig? Doesn't make sense - am I missing something? Should I not buy the SSB Option for my K2 # 5422? I'm mostly concerned about the electrical physical connector and interface to my K2. I even have one of those mini- Flat Hand Mikes from Icon days, but not the foggiest idea of what it takes to interface it to a K2? Are there instructions anywhere? I did a lot of testing with different microphones on my K2 #5203. The best reports I got with the Kenwood MC43S microphone, and the same good reports I also got with the Heil Headset and HC-4 element, but not with the Heil IC element. I also tested the Icom SM-8 and a Icom handheld microphone, the Yaesu MD-100 and a Yeasu Handheld microphone. I have to add that I did all the SSB modifications which are described on the very good comprehensive text at http://www.qrpproject.de/Media/pdf/ZusammenfassungMods.pdf For testing different microphones I found the use of microphone headers (c) by Tom N0SS very useful. They are described here: http://home.earthlink.net/~n0ss/download.html I use a QRP - K2, maybe results with a 100 W type may differ, because the higher power might compensate the worse penetration of a wider modulation. In my situation readability was prior to natural sound. 73! de Werner OE9FWV -- Das, wobei unsere Berechnungen versagen, nennen wir Zufall. For the small amount of SSB I operate I use the Kenwood MC-60 desk mic. Always get good audio reports. RE: [Elecraft] K2 # 5422 on Tarmack!
That's great Fred. It sure is nice to see the rig power up and do the right things without producing smoke. When I first turned mine on I had this are you sure feeling but I just did what the manual said and all was fine. I found the process of disassembling to begin RF board work to be depressing. I *just* put it together and the happy little display said ELECrAFt and the lights were on and the side tone worked ... Sigh. Out came the screws and soon I had this rather naked looking board on the bench. Then came Nebraska. Endless miles of stuffing parts and soldering with little change in scenery and no end in sight. But, much like driving across that great state, you eventually get there and, looking back, say now - that wasn't so bad! And if you think ELECrAFt is exciting, wait until the receiver rumbles to life and you suddenly realize much of the noise you've been hearing on 40 and 80 meters was being generated inside your old receiver! 73! - Keith KD1E - - K2 5411 - - K1 1268 (or is it 1286) - -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Fred (FL) Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2006 12:22 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K2 # 5422 on Tarmack! [Elecraft] K-2 mic query
Fred and Eric- I went through this a few months ago and got excellent advice from this reflector. TenTec sells a hand mic for $28 (the bias resistor is built in so you don't have to add it to the back of the front panel). I bought it and am using it and getting excellent audio reports. (Usual disclaimer, I own no part of TenTec, etc). All I needed to do was remove the 4-pin connector and replace it with an 8-pin. If you need the pin wiring diagram, I'd be happy to send it to you. Bottom line: you can't beat the price and the performance is OUTSTANDING. 73, Cary, K4TM K-2 #5266 Lynchburg, VA ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: : [Elecraft] K2, LP-100 and HRD etc
Hi Larry, That's even better, but cables get old and get water in them too. Mike -Original Message- From: Larry Phipps [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, 5 April 2006 11:47 PM To: Mike Walkington Cc: Elecraft-Reflector Subject: Re: : [Elecraft] K2, LP-100 and HRD etc You won't need to do that. I'm planning to allow you to enter a feedline characteristic Z, length and loss/100 ft., and then add a button that will allow you to display all the parameters as at xmtr or at antenna. You could use any feedline type or length that you know the published specs on. I am also thinking about adding the feedline data entry capability to the standard LP-100 VCP (Virtual Control Panel). I would offer the ability to enter several feedlines, which would be selected based on frequency. I am considering allowing you to upload the feedline table to the LP-100 hardware as well, so that it would display correct antenna Z if desired. Since the LP-100 has a built-in frequency counter, the table selection would be automatic. I may also add a menu to allow the table to be entered at the hardware. For this to work in the hardware or VCP, you would have to determine the sign of X experimentally and enter it on the Vector display using the Up/Dn buttons. This would only have to be done once for each antenna. The Plot program does this automatically, by looking at the slope of the X plot for each data point. Some of this will be future updates of firmware or software. You can update the LP-100 firmware and software over the internet, and there will be regular updates offered for both. Updates will be free for life, although there will be charges for add-on hardware if it becomes necessary to add hardware for a particular option in the future. All updates will be backward compatible with the original hardware, however. 73, Larry N8LP ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KX1 - 2 Watts to Australia!
While nursing my morning coffee, tuning 40m before going to work, I heard my friend Dale, WB8WOJ working Drew, VK3XU in Australia, on 7033. Signals were pretty good, so I figured I'd try when they were finished... like that was going to happen. Near the end of their qso, of course, on comes a strong carrier! So much for that plan. Anyway, as the qso ended, things got quiet again. I waited for the dit dits and after a second or so, I grabbed my old hand key and gave Drew a call. To my astonishment Drew answered me! We had a nice little qso... Drew told me he was using a hb rig at 100w and the temp was 18 deg. I told him I was using my kx1 running just 2w and the temp was 40 deg in Halifax, and I was just getting ready for work. I also told him it was a qso that I would remember for a long time! It was a nice casual little qso with no qsb or qrm. He was 569 with me and he sent me a 559! What a great way to start the day! I just added the kxb3080, 80m band to my kx1 last week, so it's been sitting front and center on the shack table ever since, and working real well I might add. Everyone have a great weekend and a Happy Easter. 72, 73, Paul - ve1dy Halifax, Nova Scotia -- QRP-L #2507, SKCC #91 www3.ns.sympatico.ca/ppike ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] I'm In!!!/palm paddles
After months of reading the list and one post, I jumped in. Just ordered a K1-4 w/atu. Seems like if you want a rig that doesn't consider cw an oh, by the way, it can do that as well option, it narrows it down to Elecraft and Ten-Tec. That is where customer support seems to take over and narrow it down to Elecraft. The ft-817 was my 3rd choice in a qrp portable, (kx1 being my 2nd), but the obvious cw first concept of Elecraft, combined with the level of technical discussion on the reflector (including responses from the lead gurus) made it a no brainer. Is there any experiences with the Palm Radio mini paddles? any other ideas for a set of portable friendly paddles? RE: [Elecraft] Hakko soldering station
Dave, I use one (Hakko 936), I build a lot of Elecraft gear for other folks, I do some personal SMD work, I do a bit of experimenting (usually Manhatten style) - hardly a day goes by without it being turned on. It has served me well through over 1 pound of solder in less than a year, it is comfortable in my hand, it heats quickly and controls tightly - what more can I say, other than I am pleased with it. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Any opinions about the model 936 Hakko soldering station...any better recommendations? Re: [Elecraft] Hakko soldering station
That is the one I got when I got my Elecraft kit just over one year ago. Nice to have a good quality soldering station (here at home, of course we have several nice ones at work). Get a variety of tips for it. I don't recommend the smallest and sharpest tip though (sorry I don't know the number). Maybe it will come in handy someday but it seems too small even for any of the SMD parts I've had to do on other projects. I have a medium sized conical tip and a slightly larger chisle tip that works great for PL-259 connectors and larger wires.
