[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net pre-announcement
Howdy Folks, I am going to play things a little differently this coming Sunday. I've been invited down to Hillsboro for a picnic to fete the folks who worked comms at the local airshow. I wish to take my K2, some antenna wire, and the rest of my gear down to the park where they are having the feast to show folks how a CW net sounds. I will need your help to relay stations in since I'll be in the city with its RF noise problems, a definite lack of elevation, and a temporary antenna to lessen my hearing ability. I may have to run lower power than normal too so you all may have to push your rigs to hear me. But, if I get a few folks to help relay stations, or even act as NCS folks I'd be much obliged. Please think about working as NCS or a relay station so we can show the CERT and ARES folks how much fun it is to get on HF and work with friends across the continent. I'll be under observation so my normally 'sporadic' fist will grow a bit more shakey. Bear with me while folks tweak me from both ends ;) It should be fun, enlightening, and a bit stressful for poor Kevin. However, if we can gain even one op to the CW fold we've more than won. We may even sell a few of Wayne's rigs too!! I think he and Eric would get a kick out of that. I'll write more later but simply wanted to provide a bit of information on what is to occur this Sunday. Until then stay as cool as you can, 73, Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] KPA100 advice
John, Two reasons for mounting it on the K2 first: 1) You will be following the instructions as written in the manual - it is just easier that way rather than trying to interpret the effects of working two sets of instructions at once. 2) When you have finished the testing, you will know that the KPA100 functions properly when connected directly to the K2, so if you have problems when it is moved to the external enclosure, you will know that the KPA100 is likely not the cause of the probelm. As an added third reason - the mounting of the KPA100 in an external enclosure is not directly supported by Elecraft (they do not discourage it either). If you feel confident that you can analyze and troubleshoot whatever strange problems may arise by mounting it in the external enclosure, then by all means do it that way - but then if you had that kind of confidence, you likely would not have had to ask the question. Step by step, one step at a time, is usually the best way to reach the goal - leaps and bounds can cause you to falter and fall. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > Hi everyone! > > I am just at the end stages of KPA100 build. [Elecraft] KPA100 advice
Hi everyone! I am just at the end stages of KPA100 build. I intend to mount in an accessory cabinet along with the antenna tuner. This is not exactly addressed by instructions by Elecraft but is covered on a web page that I have downloaded. My question is whether I should mount the KPA100 in the K2 first, then transfer after testing? Or would this be waste of time? [Elecraft] K2 build coming along.... Just a couple questions.....
First off, hello to everyone on the list and thanks in advance for all the help you have given me in deciding to buy/build a K2. I purchased the K2 about a month ago when Elecraft was running the "Dayton Special". I got the K2, SSB module and the KPA100 option with the Heil headset. Anyway The build is going along quite well , but I just wanted to add a couple of observations for the group to ponder just to verify I am on track with the build and if I need to check anything BEFORE I move on to the final assembly of the RF board. Here are my observations so far: Alignment & Test part 1, everything worked first time on!! The only thing I saw was in adjusting the AGC Threshold is that I had to turn R1 ALL the way to one end to get the 3.80V suggested level. To me, this doesn't seem to leave much room for change later, but still falls into the suggested value. Any thoughts here that I should keep in mind for later here??? Alignment & Test Part 2, Again here, everything falls into the "typical" ranges. My question here for everyone is regarding C22. I have read in the archives about everyone's experience in how to obtain the best calibration, but no one has mentioned their final frequency read out in the counter. Mine reads 3999.98 REGARDLESS of how I adjust C22. I have moved it throughout its entire range and the frequency never changes. However, even with this frequency, the other calibration steps in this section ALL fall into the proper ranges. Is this something I should be concerned with right now, or will it "correct" itself once construction is complete and I go to do a final alignment? Also, is it then safe to assume that if the reference is off, will it then throw off the VCO alignment and affect the VFO linearization later?? If so, then my other observations would make sense. Once I completed all the Alignment steps in this section, I hooked the K2 up to my HF dipole and started comparing what signals the K2 could hear compared to my FT-857. The differences that I did notice here were that that displayed frequency is below what the Yeasu would show, and that the S-meter didn't show the same signal strength. I did hook up my XG2 that I built while waiting for the K2 and I do get an S9 on BOTH the '857 as well as the K2 at the 50uV range(as it should) and the '857 shows an S3 at the 1uV level and the K2 shows an S2, so this test show both radios to be about the same there, but an "on air" signal was different. Anyway... Sorry for the long post, but I find that more details tend to help get better answers. Thanks for letting me ramble here and of course thanks for your thoughts as I make my way through this wonderful journey of building the K2. 73!! Vern -- KC8YOH __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? [Elecraft] QSK
Did an A/B comparison of QSK between the K2 and my Yaesu 1KMP that I have owned for many years. To give Yaesu all the advantage I could, I set the delays to zero, no linear, set the linear switch to off (it affects the timing), and turned on the DSP. The received audio on the Yaesu was horrible compared to the K2. While the K2 was smooth, almost as if I did not have breakin turned on, the Yaesu audio was full of low frequency thumps and distortion so much so that it made it hard to copy well between morse elements. I was transmitting at around 35wpm. I was using cascaded 500Hz filters on the Yaesu and the K2 filter was at the 400Hz setting. I also have the INRAD roofing filter installed on the Yaesu. Yaesu: fully loaded with all crystal filers and the roofing filter K2: Stock with KDSP2 But, I guess that the people on this list already know this! I bought the K2 to use primarily as an IF rig for VHF and up. I was planning to use the Yaesu for all HF contesting. I am now changing my mind. I just ordered the KPA100/KAT100 combo. I mostly do LP, CW contesting. The K2 seems ideal. Raj, N2RD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Re: Amp Keying Circuit
David VK2NU wrote :- Thanks for all the responses to this - much appreciated. I'm afraid it was a simple case of me not reading the instructions on the keying circuit. The FL-2100B pulls 20v on its keying input, whilst the circuit for the K2 is only designed for 5-12v !! This is clearly written on the instructions with the circuit, which I neglected to read. Does anyone have details of a simple circuit I can build, so I can use this with my FL-2100B ?? Again, many thanks for the all the replies !! David, VK2NU Hi David - go to http:www.qsl.net/icom/ampcontrol.html There you will see two very simple and reliable interface circuits that will enable almost any amp to be keyed safely by almost any transceiver. To take care of older (high keyline voltage) amps, use MJE340 and MJE350 (negative and positive keying respectively). I built mine in old Colman's Mustard tins, two RCA sockets - powered by the amp relay volts - easy 10 minute job. Using the amp keying circuit by Tom N0SS, my K2s happily key an L4B, or any of the other amps in the shack. Apparently Icom had a problem with keying relays in some of it's transceivers - hence the need for these interfaces. 73, Ken ZL1AIH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KX1 quirk: no AF nor HF output at all
Couldn't find anything in the archives, so here goes. My KX1 showed a strange problem. I had put it away in full working order about a week ago. Yesterday I wanted to listen to some live CW to polish up my skills. It switched on ok, but there was absolutely no audio output. Not even a hint of hiss. I tried several headsets, nothing. Also, there was no HF output at all into a dummy load. I thought it wise to refrain from taking it apart at that time... So this evening I tried again. No HF, no AF, the display was working okay, I could switch between all bands and the tuning seemed to be working as well. Battery power is 8V. I decided to see if the receiving circuits were still with me, but found that the S-meter indicated a strong signal all the time: it could not distinguish between the XG1 being switched on or off or even being disconnected! Hmmm... I took out the KXAT1 and without even putting the jumper in the audio hiss was there when I turned the KX1 on. I put the KXAT1 back in and it came fully alive with all bells and whistless working like a charm. What the hack is going on here? Anybody seen this before? [Elecraft] OT: FS: Bird Wattmenter with 5 UHF/VHF slugs
I have for sale, one used Bird Thruline wattmeter, model 4431 (same as the model 43 but it also has a built-in, adjustable RF sampler that is brought out to a BNC connector.) Used ones are going for around 400 bucks with no case or RF elements (slugs). Cosmetically this one has some paint chips and scratches, but is fully functional. The included leather case is sadly in need of some TLC, but still protects the meter properly. I'll sell this one for $200 plus shipping (USPS Priority or FEDX Ground) with the following RF elements (the only elements I have) 5A(5 watts, 25-60 MHz), 50C(50 watts, 100-250 MHz), 50D(50 watts, 200-500 MHz), 100C (100 watts, 100-250 MHz) and 100E (100 Watts, 400-1000 MHz). [Elecraft] strange K2 160m power problem
In the process of calibrating my LP100 wattmeter, I was hopping back and forth between bands and transmitting. I discovered a strange problem with my K2/100 #3134. This is what happens: First, I have the K2 hooked up to a dummy load. I also confirmed that this happens with a different wattmeter in line. I am keying the K2 with a straight key. 1. I transmit on 28 MHz. I get about 100w out. I press "band -" several times until I get to 1.8 MHz. Putting the key down, I get about 110 w out as expected. 2. I transmit on 28 MHz. I get about 100w out. I press "band +" once to get to 1.8 MHz. Putting the key down, I get 170 w out !!! In other words, it makes a difference whether I go from 10m to 160m either by pressing Band - several times, or Band + once. Pressing Band + once somehow screws up the tx agc. The problem does not seem to be in the KPA100, because if I turn the power down to 10W I get similar response (10W one way, 15W the other way). My other K2 (similar SN) does not do this, or if there is a difference in the 160m power it is too small to notice. The only thing different about #3134 is that is has somewhat lower 10m tx power, about 7W max without the KPA100. But it can still make 100w on 10m with the KPA/100. Ideas?? If I twiddle the power control AFTER I start transmitting on 160, the power returns to the correct level from 170w. I think this caused me to smoke the matching network on my 160m shunt-fed vertical during the IARU contest. I was driving an Ameritron AL1500 amp, which only needs about 50w drive to make 1500w out. When I first went to 160 in the contest, the swr jumped like crazy, and I confirmed by going outside that a doorknob cap in the shunt feed was smoking! I can't remember if I was on 10m before I qsyed to 160, but it is possible since I made a bunch of contacts there. I suspect that the increased drive put me way over 1500w for a short time. [Elecraft] Re: Elecraft Digest, Vol 27, Issue 20
Sounds familar Mike -- I just finsihed my K2 last week. When I tried installing the nut -- it did not fit. If you read the instructions somewhere it says -- remove the nuts supplied with the antenna and key/speaker jacks -- well in my case they were removed and supplied separately. I decided to leave them all off for time being as I am now building SSB, K60 and DSP options and will have to dissassemble the RF board to install these. Will eventually go to my junkbox to find a proper nut. 73 Paul W4MAY K2 SN 5627 - Original Message - From: "Michael Cook" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, July 18, 2006 4:19 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K2 Antenna Nut: It can't be this hard Hi all. I've been assembling my K2 since thursday and having a ton of fun. Last night I just finished the last assembly steps and I'm about to move on to the third set of testing (and aligning) of the transmitter. There is just one thing that has got me stuck: the nut that goes on the antenna jack. This can't POSSIBLY be this hard. I've tried. I've had someone else try. I just can NOT get the thing on. It seems impossible to get the thing on straight. If I do get it to catch it quickly seems to end up crooked and then falling off. Is there some kind of special secret here? [Elecraft] Low SSB TX power on K2 - REPAIRED !!!
The problem has been solved, thanks to the sleuthing of Bill, NY9H. It turns out that the problem was a shorted crystal (X3 or X5). Once the solder was removed and then properly soldered, the K2 transmits normally in SSB. We made a quick QSO with a station in Miami verifying that it is properly working. So, if you have low ssb TX and all voltage readings are 'normal', double-check the crystals for being shorted-out. Thanks to Bill, NY9H and all of those who responded with suggestions. It's had all the important Elecraft-recommended performance mods and Alerts applied, including the "A to B" upgrade. The rig works FB on CW. I am disappointed with the SSB performance, even after using three mikes (and changed mike pin jumpers). I scanned the email reflector and decided to do voltage checks of the ICs and diodes on the SSB board. The SSB board is Rev. C. There is no reading on the S-meter when I transmit, and no reading on ALC. I do get a very weak signal when I used each of the three mikes and listened on my other rig. I also transmitted PSK and again get a weak signal, however, the IMD was -23. A couple of hams within 5 miles said they heard me on 20 meter SSB, but just at the noise level. Another ham who lives about 10 miles away could not hear me, but I heard him calling me.
