[Elecraft] Lower Header Kit Prices & What's Coming Next

2006-08-04 Thread Gary Hvizdak
We have lowered our un-module header kit prices:
o by $3.50 (for all of our rev. D based kits)
o by an average of $0.625 (for our rev. G based kits)

If you ordered since our rev. G pre-production sale, then Ken will
automatically credit you the difference

Also, Ken will be offering a $2 rebate for customers who purchased
rev. D board products at our original (pre-sale) prices, and who now
wish to upgrade to rev. G. The purpose of this discount is to average
our NRE (Non-Recurring Engineering) costs, which were significantly
greater for rev. D than for rev. G. I'll be updating our "Ordering"
page this weekend to describe how this rebate will be applied.

 --- - - - ---

With our rev. G board now in production, I'll be turning my attention
back to our documentation, and to fixing our website so it displays
properly for Mozilla Firefox users. When the website revision is done,
it promises to display better with Firefox than with Internet Explorer!

 --- - - - ---

One task that's particularly high on my "To Do" list is a major
revision of our Companion Guide. The next release will:

o incorporate a suggestion from G3XYS that does away with the task
of annotating the K2 assembly instructions. Instead the Companion
Guide will have the assembly instructions. The annotations to the
K2 assembly manual will be limited to including references back to
the Companion Guide.

o include lots of background information provided by W3FPR regarding
the VCO circuit change that's required for 60 meter operation, and
giving the builder perhaps as many as three choices as to when to
change this circuit.

Gary, KI4GGX

Visit our website at http://www.unpcbs.com/ to learn about our un-
module header products and our rework-free "Plug & Play Ready" K2
assembly instructions.

Correct. Pressure and density are not the same thing. But if we are
talking about arcing, should we be more concerned with pressure altitude, or
density altitude? A higher than standard temperature can make a huge
difference in the two.

[Elecraft] Multimeter Altitude Limits

2006-08-04 Thread James Duffey
I have lived at about 7000 ft asl for the last 14 years and never had a
problem with a multimeter functioning properly. This includes cheap
Harbor Freight models. an HP or two , a Fluke, an old analog Triplett
(Simpson?)260, and several rigs with LCD displays.

So that although I suspect that the there is a limit, it is much higher
than 7000 ft asl, and the 6500 ft asl is an aribitrary limit imposed by
someone who lives near sea level. Like in Taiwan, Malaysia, or Tijuana.
I would think that the multimeter that you are considering will do fine
where you want to use it and you will have no problems.

The trouble with these is that they are monaural. Stereo is important
because I want to investigate binaural modes for CW, such as putting the
I and Q outputs of a quadrature sampling detector into each ear, etc.

The Yaesu phones are stereo but the frequency range is important so I
can get rid of the external DSP I'm using to kill sidetone thumps and

Re: [Elecraft] KDSP2 Performance

2006-08-04 Thread Bob Tellefsen
Hello Elliott

The KDSP2 and the KNB2 work together. The KNB2 blanker handles
pulse noises, while the KDSP2 works more on the "white" noises you
hear. Neither by itself can do the whole job, but together they work
just fine. Sometimes one kind of noise will predominate, and some-
times the other. Sometimes both occur together. It's really nice to
have the combo available to handle whatever you get hit with.

Good luck and 73

I am thinking of adding the KDSP2 to my trusty K2. I have listened to the
.wav files on the Elecraft site and the reduction in ambient noise is
impressive. I know that the DSP is designed to handle random/thermal noise
but can anyone comment on its actual ability to handle pulse/burst noise
such as that generated by power lines etc.

is stereo, and put a music CD in the drive and listen to some great stereo

While I love the simplicity of this idea, the only concern I would have for
myself if it is directly plugged in to any board-mounted elecraft key jack is
that the jack is not designed for constant pushing back abnd forth and will
likely cause premature failure of the board and/or jack.

NOTE: Elecraft addressed this with their KXPD1 by including a mounting screw
for stability and load distribution.

I do, however, like the idea of the hand-held 1/4" plug/paddle in the extension

I achieved some limited degree of success last night with my USB to Serial
adapter cable.

Thanks to the excellent recommendation/endorsement from Paul Gates, KD3JF and
Don Nesbitt, N4HH, I visited the I.O.Gear web-site and downloaded the
USB-Serial Driver for the GUC232A cable.
http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=dm

Installing the driver was just a little tricky; I had to uninstall the old
driver (following instructions from the MS Windows Tech Support web-site). I
also downloaded the GIC232A Manual from I.O.Gear.

The driver installed and showed up as "Prolific USB Serial". Again following
the instructions from the KIO2 manual, I conducted the Menu "PORT" test and
"Eureka!" the radio responded to commands from the Hyper Terminal, perfectly.

Unfortunately, I labeled it a limited success because when I attempted to
connect my K2 with my “Ham Radio Deluxe” software things did not run smoothly.
There appeared to be a huge latency issue between HRD and the K2. The full
frequency from my K2 did not always show up on HRD and commands from the HRD to
the K2 were delayed about 8-10 seconds. After running HRD straight to a Serial
input and experiencing a seamless interface this was disappointing. But alas
that is something that I will work on with HRD and I really don’t consider that
a major issue, as I know that I will work it out. I have faith in Simon Brown
and the HRD forum.

For what it may be worth it seemed that changing positions of the USB cable
from one USB connection (on the back of the computer) and there by changing my
COM Port settings gave me different results. My system did not seem to like
COM Port 3 or 4, but by moving to a different USB connection and changing to
COM Port 5 and 6 showed very good results. It may be worth a try.
The point is that the I.O.Gear GUC232A software worked. For those individuals
looking to get a USB to Serial Interface, I found a great deal from Amazon.com
for the Cable and Software for $20 shipping included

[Elecraft] KDSP2 Performance

2006-08-04 Thread Elliott Lawrence

I am thinking of adding the KDSP2 to my trusty K2. I have listened to the .wav
files on the Elecraft site and the reduction in ambient noise is impressive. I
know that the DSP is designed to handle random/thermal noise but can anyone
comment on its actual ability to handle pulse/burst noise such as that
generated by power lines etc.

Thanks es 73,
Elliott WA6TLA

[Elecraft] Continuing Serial to (RS232, DB9) to USB Adapter Cable

2006-08-04 Thread David Lear

Chuck Gehring wrote:-

"The closest I came to success was seeing a tiny blip of undecipherable
data stream on the hyper terminal window during the K2 port test."

I am in the same position except I measured it with a multimeter set to
the AC millivolts range (on Gary Surrency's advice) and the software
responds with a one time change of frequency and mode (N3FJP ACLOG). My
question is what in the K2 generates the continuous data stream?

My story is that I think that in a nearby lightning strike, my USB/RS232
adapter was fried. I also found that my Adapter chip on the I/O board
needed replacing. In debugging this condition I destroyed the MCU
(grugh). That's now replaced and I'm at this one shot condition. I
replaced my damaged adapter, that was working, with the same make (from
Buxcomm). That works to extent that it passes on the one shot data. Any
ideas?

RE: [Elecraft] Multimeter Altitude Limits

2006-08-04 Thread peter gerba
Hi Jim;

I understand arcing at standard Temp. and pressure. I thought that the
reduction of media would produce an increase of voltage Vs. distance (vacuum
relays and Caps.)

I'm missing something here.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Multimeter Altitude Limits

In our high altitude ballooning program at LSU (>120,000 feet) it's
necessary to be very careful about sharp edges and corners in circuits of
even modest voltages. Vacuum chamber testing is an essential part of the
payload development. Our student payload had a Geiger-Muller tube, and
that's a couple hundred volts, so they had to be sure to test in the
chamber.

Interestingly... 6500 ft is 1981 meters, so I speculate a conversation
like..

Pointy Haired Boss: We need an altitude limit because of HV arcing, what
do think it should be?
Alice: Oh, couple thousand meters or so should be safe enough.
Pointy Haired Boss: OK, tell marketing.
Alice: Fine, but remember we're selling it in the USA.
Pointy Haired Boss: Not to worry, ad copy writers will take care of
conversion.

I recall a wireless device whose range was specified on the package to be
"up to 328 feet."
Amazing how they knew it would work at 327 but not at 329. Of course what
was meant was that the range was about 100 meters. :^))

Re: [Elecraft] Yaesu YH77STA & K2

2006-08-04 Thread Joe, aa4nn

Bernie, etal,

Yaesu YH77STA headphones are lightweight
and very comfortable. I have used them for
many years at home as well as on DXpedition
with a K2 working those gruelling 3 to 4-hour
shifts of pileups. I don't wear them covering
my ear but pushed slightly forward. Great
sound from those beautiful CW tones. I have
no idea how they sound on that other mode.

[Elecraft] No power output K2 Part III of assembly Problem Solved

2006-08-04 Thread W7is
Thanks very much for the helpful suggestions on how to solve the
no power output in the final assembly Part III. W3FJP provided
a very detailed test procedure and a number of others provided info
about how they solved similar problems. The RF probe showed low
output from the Buffer. Using a magnifying lens I found what
appeared to be a tiny hint of a pool of solder around RFC13.
After touching it up, all is well with full output power. I also
found my trusty 35 yrs old 2kw dummy load had a bad coax fitting.

Even though I was up half the night, it was worth the effort!!!

Re: [Elecraft] Yaesu YH77STA & K2

2006-08-04 Thread Gordon Gibson

Hi Bernie

I use Yaesu YH77STA with my K2 (2746) and I love them, I am not sure what
Pro's and Cons you refer to but I prefer a light pair of phones and these
are ideal from my point of view, the only other pair of earphones I have
used on the K2 were Heil and I found those to be very claustrophobic if
that is the correct word they shut everything out!
