[Elecraft] BFO test failure (K2), Part 2 of RF board test

2006-10-11 Thread Chuck
My BFO does is not working. The freq. counter reads .0.
I have tried following other posts on the subject and checked the
voltages on U11 and verified that R98 and R99 are present, L33 is
installed correctly.
Are their any voltage checks I can run on Q24, or L33.
Is there something else I can check? The troubleshooting guiding in the
manual is based on info messages, which I am not getting any.

I just completed the VCO voltage checks and that ran good. Everything
was within range spec'd by the manual.

Thanks, Chuck - K3TNT

RE: [Elecraft] inverted vertical

2006-10-11 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Run it as close to a half-wave as the KAT1 can handle Actually, you might
consider a small (50 to 100 pf) capacitor in series with the wire. That
should move the reactance to a more manageable level when the length is
really close to 1/2 wave on the band you're using. Wind in wire as need for
higher bands. A shorter 1/2 wave is better than a 1/4 or 3/4 wave without an
extensive "ground" system.

Keeping the radiator near a 1/2 wave keeps the feed point impedance very
high and so keeps the antenna truly "ground independent". That's about 66
feet on 40 meters, 46 feet on 30 meters, 33 feet on 20 meters, etc. The
capacitor in series will make it look shorter to the KAT1 so it can match it
even at the very high impedance presented by a half wave radiator

The pattern will be no different than any other vertical. Expect stronger
signals in the directions away from the building due to the absorption by
the building.

I'd not worry about "RF in the shack" unless you actually have RF in the
shack. I'm presently running a 1/2 wave on 40 meters from a temporary second
floor location with no ground other than the mains. No RF issues at 100
watts. Works FB. If you do find the rig "hot" on some band, connect a 1/4
wave counterpoise wire to the rig case for that band to "tame" it. You can
use very small wire and run it along a baseboard, etc. Just keep the far end
insulated. The building detunes the wire a bit and you'll find that the
optimum length is a little less than half that of the antenna, although it's
not at all critical. It you want to "tune" the wire, put a small flashlight
bulb in series with it and adjust the length for maximum brilliance at a
given power. That's maximum current that will occur when it's exactly 1/4
wave long, electrically. It's easy to adjust: just start "long" and fold the
wire back on itself to "shorten" it. Even if the wire is insulated, folding
it back will be the same is cutting it short since RF flows over the outside
of the conductor. A folded-back wire simply looks like a fatter conductor to
the RF. But I've never had to get so exotic for simply keeping RF off the
rig. However, if you want to operate on a band where your radiator must be
1/4 wave or less long, then you'll definitely want a counterpoise tuned for
maximum current. In that situation the counterpoise will have a huge effect
on how well you get out. But, when the radiator is close to 1/2 wave, the
effect of the counterpoise on the radiated signal is miniscule at the most.

BTW, if you do operate it where the radiator is close to 1/4 wave, it'll
work a bit better than most simple installations using one radial since the
high-current part of your antenna is up in the clear where with most
verticals it's close to the ground! Indeed you can consider such and
antenna a doublet being fed right at the center with no feedline. I've done
that in second floor apartments with considerable success running QRP on 40
and 20.

Michael,

If you will ever use the BL2 at its maximum rated power, then by all means
ask for a replacement. If you will alway use less power than the max, the
real answer is one of asthetics - if you want it to look 'pretty', then
replace it, but it should work just fine even though the corner is damaged.
(These are just 'educated guesses' and free advice - which is worth every
penny you pay for it).

RE: [Elecraft] inverted vertical

2006-10-11 Thread Don Wilhelm
RC,

I would think it may work for you that way, but I would be skeptical about
the counterpoise effectiveness on bands other than 20 meters. I would
suggest a quarterwave counterpoise for each band that you plan to operate to
keep the RF at the K1 location to a minimum - even if it cannot run
straight. Remember that the the open end of the counterpoise will have a
high RF voltage (yes, even at the K1's QRP power), so keep the far end
isolated and insulated.

The other way to handle the counterpoise on several bands is to tune it with
lumped inductance (or capacitance) so it is an electrical quarterwave on the
band you are operating. There is commercial gear that does just that, the
MFJ Artificial Ground is one example, but you could easily homebrew an
equivalent, usually a series tuned circuit is all that is needed along with
some indication that the electrical quarterwave tuning has been achieved (an
RF current meter in the counterpoise wire will do - tune for max current).

The DVD is a slide show you can show on your TV or run on your computer.
It contains slides of all but three bears with music, pop-ups and

It was fun making this DVD as I got to put some faces with the calls!
Once again all profits from this DVD will go directly to the EPA QRP

I laughed a bunch making this show!

Look for the Elecraft Radios!

RE: [Elecraft] k2, freq readout calibration

2006-10-11 Thread Don Wilhelm
Carel,

The K2 does not use the 4 MHz oscillator in real time for frequency
determination, most of the time it only serves as the oscillator for the
microprocessor, so its frequency is not critical. That is why nothing
obvious happens when you change C22.

The 4 MHz Reference osc is used for frequency determination during CAL FCTR,
CAL PLL and CAL FIL. Before expecting accuracy with any of these menu
procedures, you must accurately set the 4 MHz oscillator beforehand.

If you did not accurately set the 4 MHz oscillator first, that alone may
explain your dial calibration error. Let the K2 warm up for about 1/2 hour
before starting the calibration cycle.

If you have an accurate frequency counter (known accurate to 1 Hertz or
better at about 12 MHz), then you can use the counter to set the 4 MHz
reference oscillator. Set the K2 to the 7 MHz or the 10 MHz band and
connect both the internal counter probe and the external counter to test
point TP1. Enter the menu for CAL FCTR and then adjust C22 until the
frequency displayed on the K2 matches the frequency shown on the external
counter. This method is outlined in the K2 manual.

If you do not have an accurate frequency counter, you can still set C22 with
accuracy as long as you can receive a station of known frequency. A
standard station like WWV is ideal, but other broadcast stations will
suffice if their operating frequency is known (an AM station is best). Tune
the station accurately in LSB or USB mode, then set the K2 menu to CAL FCTR.
Read the frequency at TP1, then read the frequency at TP2 and subtract the
two. Adjust C22 until the result of the subtraction is equal to the
transmitting frequency of the station you used as your 'standard'. This
procedure is the one available on the Elecraft website for download (it is
not in the K2 manual). The resulting accuracy does depend on your ability
to accurately tune the station (be certain to use LSB or USB, not CW because
of the CW offset). I like to use WWV because I can use Spectrogram to
display the 500 or 600 Hz tones and know that I have it tuned accurately -
other standard stations have their own transmitting format, check the one
that you can receive.

After accurately setting the 4 MHz oscillator (and before it drifts
significantly), run CAL PLL and then enter CAL FIL - tap BAND- and cycle
through each of the BFO settings, change each one (and then change it back
to the original setting if it was previously correct) to force the K2 to
write new values into EEPROM based on the new setting of C22. You must do
this for each and every BFO - 8 for SSB, 8 for CW and if you have the RTTY
filters set, yet another 8 BFOs must be set.

When you hgave finished all that, retune the station you originally used for
a standard, and you should find it now tunes within 20 Hz of the correct
frequency. If not, you did something wrong (or out of sequence) along the
way - the sequence is important, set C22 first, then CAL PLL and then CAL
FIL.

[Elecraft] k2, freq readout calibration

2006-10-11 Thread pc5m, Carel
Hi,

I have for some time (1 year) a well functioning k2. Never bothered to do a
proper frequency.calibration because I used the k2 as IF for VHF. Recently I
tried to do so (according to the w3fpr method), but no luck. I can't get the
dial correct and have a quite big error (2 KHz or so). It seems that there
is no change at all when performing the calibration (yes I do PLL CAL and
XFIL CAL.).

I do have one question to start with:

If you tune to a carrier (CW) signal and adjust C22 (on the control board,
to adjust the 4MHz xtal osc) what should happen ? Should the pitch of the
carrier change ? should the frequency readout change ? (With my K2 "nothing"
happens, no change in pitch, no change in readout, is this normal ?.).

Thanks in advance,

Carel

Nice recording. Mine definitely does NOT do that. I wish I could be

Tuning through a quiet band, I noticed as I tuned slowly across a CW
signal, I could clearly hear some "artifact" chirps or warbles with each
increment of the dial (even at the finest tuning rate).

This is K2 #61, one of the original field tester units, and it has had
all upgrade mods (at least I am pretty sure it has). I captured a .wma
of it to hear for yourself:

[Elecraft] IC 735

2006-10-11 Thread rlpend

Thank you for so many responses. I appreciate it.

I took the radio out of the case to have a look.

I think I will let the radio sit quietly for a while then try
again-carefully checking each control setting-and if it doesn't
function send it off to one of the recommended repair facilities. (Or
maybe I'll pursue AM...)

[Elecraft] Nothing new to Elecraft owners...

2006-10-11 Thread Bob Evans
I know this isn't anything new to Elecraft owners, but I just had to say it
anyway. Last week, I built and added the DSP unit to my second K2/100 a
year after completing my last Elecraft kit. And it was darned fun! I am
still amazed that Elecraft has designed kits that even I can not screw up.
I am still 100% consistent at having never made a parts inventory check AND
getting the kit built with NO issues on the first try. I am not overly
detail oriented, but Elecraft has, somehow, managed to make a product that
compensates for every shortcoming I can throw at them.

Now that I can compare the default de-noiser settings in the DSP unit to my
first one, which I have "adjusted", I'll be correcting my adjusted one back
to the default settings since it sounds better than what I had done. ;-)

[Elecraft] Problem: K2 Audio Tuning Click or Warble

2006-10-11 Thread Bill Acito W1PA
After a few months of relative inactivity, I went back last night to
continue building my KPA100,
and had the K2 on in the background. I actually thought it was a DSP
artifact, but it's there even with the DSP in bypass.

Tuning through a quiet band, I noticed as I tuned slowly across a CW signal,
I could clearly hear some "artifact" chirps or warbles with each increment
of the dial (even at the finest tuning rate). There are other references to
this in the archive:

RE: [Elecraft] N-gen

2006-10-11 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ken,

Check the position of the orientation dot on U1 - it should be pointing
toward the center of the board. If you got it in backwards, it will not
work. I doubt if you can desolder it without damage, but you can clip the
leads and install a new one in.

Check the schematic, the circuit is straightforward, and there is little
that can go wrong other than the orientation of the diodes and the MMIC.
