RE: [Elecraft] N1MM Contest Logger VFO B issue, USB-Serial, Serial CW Keying
Hi Mark: I'm no expert on N1MM logger but I have used it with the K2. I just tried it using v6.10.10, but I know this has worked before with earlier versions. When you use both VFO A and VFO B, you need to have 2 data entry windows open, one for A and one for B. There are key shortcuts to switch back and forth between A and B but if you simply click in the bandmap for VFO B, the focus for everything switches to the VFO B entry window and anything entered there will be entered correctly into the log. If you then click on the bandmap for VFO A, everything shifts back to the entry window for VFO A and the data will be logged correctly with VFO A data. If you have ONLY the entry window for VFO A open and use that for data entry while using VFO B, then only VFO A data will be entered into the log. This has worked for me using both real serial ports as well as the USB-to-serial connections. I haven't read the help manual/file lately (I must before next weekend), but it used to be explained fairly well in there. The only problem I have had with N1MM and using both VFOs is with operating split and getting the software to send on A while listening on B and vice versa. Good luck! 73, Ken K3IU -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mark Schreiner Sent: Sunday, October 29, 2006 6:12 PM To: Gregg R. Lengling; Elecraft Reflector; Carter W. Craigie Subject: Re: [Elecraft] N1MM Contest Logger VFO B issue, USB-Serial, Serial CW Keying I started this thread with the original question. I specifically wondered about folks using serial port for communications for band/mode info with N1MM logging program. I'm using v6.9.6. As long as I use VFO A only things are okay. If I switch to VFO B I don't see it displayed on the program window and it doesn't log info from VFO B but continues to log the info from VFO A, which is the wrong VFO at that point. I think some of the responses have indicated that this specific problem has been seen, with multiple versions of software from N1MM. Thanks everyone for that input and I believe they will be looking into this problem now as I'm not the only one with that problem. I also tried EQF logging program and it displays both VFO frequencies and correctly indicates which VFO is the active one, and I believe it logs the info correctly as well if it displays it correctly. I really like the N1MM program, though, so I'm going to stick with that and know that it has that shortcoming, and hope it gets resolved by the N1MM programmers soon. I appreciate everyone's comments on this and I hope I've helped others be alerted of this potential bug so that you don't have too much to edit in a log when you realize things don't look quite right. WRT the USB-Serial converter, I was only using that for the CW Keying and I had tried radio communications with that as well but it didn't seem to work at all so I didn't pursue it any further, yet. Could just be the Belkin model I have or maybe some other setup issue, though. CW Keying with either the normal serial port or the USB-Serial adapter didn't seem quite smooth enough and the timing was off a bit. I just built the parallel port interface using a single 2N and a 1-kohm resistor and it seems quite a bit smoother. I'm not sure if this is just wishful thinking or if it really is better, but I guess I'll find out the next time I run a more serious effort on a CW contest to try it out. My quick test made me think it was better though. Any experience or comments from others on the parallel versus serial port CW keying, or for that matter, how about USB port via some other interface? I think this will get me by until I figure out which K1EL Keyer to get, probably the USB version. BTW, the response from the S/W folk at N1MM Log is that they will not be supporting the KY protocol. Just curious if others who are reading this thread have used another logging program that supports the KY protocol and how they like it? Maybe that should be a topic for another thread, though. 73, Mark, NK8Q K2 4786 Gregg R. Two reasons being that the KPA100 exhibits gain and is itself not perfectly linear. So the level of the IMD products around a S-9 signal from the K2/100 could be greater than those around the S-9 signal from the K2. A similar situation occurs in a receiver where a 'weak' IF or IF branch amplifier can ruin the performance of the overall receiver even if it has a 'strong' front end. 73, Geoff GM4ESD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 vs. TS-830s during the contest.
I only listened. I used the crazy contest as a way to evaluate my receivers. Hooked both rigs up to my 32' vertical and listened on 40 meters. The CW portion of the band was full of SSB. I started with the 830s and it was doing OK. Not much grunge being generated in the receiver. I then switched to the K2. K2 was doing as well, no, wait, it's doing better. I listened again, switched back and forth and was able to confirm it. The K2 was cleaner and would allow me to understand some of the weak stations better than the 830s did. If I put the two rigs on equal footing, with both at wide bandwidth and no IF shift or notch, the K2 just handled the huge signals better. I was impressed. Of course the 830s sounded better on SSB but it should. The K2 has no SSB filter and the CW filter at 2.2 KHz width provides a very non-flat pass band for some odd coloration. - Keith KD1E - - K2 5411 - ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I replied to the original post on this, and I believe I came to the wrong conclusion. My excuse is that I'm new with N1MM ! When I tested this, I activated VFO B by just switching the VFOs on the K2. That activated the VFO B bandmap, and I concluded that VFO B was the active (my term) N1MM VFO. But after reading Ken's post below, and playing with the Logger some more, I realize that even though the VFO B bandmap is activated by switching to that VFO on the K2, the VFO A data entry window still has the focus and consequently the log entry reflects VFO A. Apparently one must click on the VFO B data entry window to make VFO B active, no matter which VFO is selected on the K2. This is a little confusing because the K2 will be transmitting on whatever VFO it has active, but maybe this is the desired behaviour for some reason??? Re: [Elecraft] N1MM Contest Logger VFO B issue, USB-Serial, Serial CW Keying
I think there is another way to look at this. N1MM Logger is the center point of what you do in the contest. You should make changes in N1MM Logger, and have it change the radio instead of doing the same thing on the radio. That way Logger is always under control. The exception to this is changing frequency within a band, where Logger simply cannot do the QSY fast enough (for my taste). N1MM _can_ do the QSY properly, but I find it to be a bit slow. I don't remember if just clicking in the VFO B window will cause the radio to select the B VFO, but there is a command to do so which also changes focus to that window and changes the VFO selection simultaneously. More and more, the computer is where the contest is, not the radio! [Elecraft] Mic Gain, K2/100
Bill wrote, on SSB, the voice peaks of the K2 are 25-30% lower than those of the FT-890. I am using dynamic mikes on both radios... on the K2 it's a Yaesu MH-31 Mic. I also used this mic on both radios and noted voice power peaks almost twice that of the K2 (70 w vs 40w). My K2 is set for SSBA of 3, and SSBC of 3-1. My KSB2 firmware is 1.07 I have seen a few references to mods on the KSB2, including swapping resistors to increase mic gain. I have also seen references that they should not be done on K2/100 units. Are there any internal mic gain mods that can be used on the KSB2 in a K2/100? Is there anything else I can do short of the external mic amp? Bill W1PA (K2 FT #61) Bill and the group, Earlier this year I researched the above and found some interesting information. Per the response to my query to Support the mic audio input should be minus 27 db nominal plus or minus about 6-7 db. They actually gave me a milivolt level that translates to the above numbers. The gold standard in commercial broadcasting is minus 40 db for microphone input. Most dynamic and electret microphones available to amateur radio operators have an output of minus 40 to minus 60 db. So the average microphone will produce about two to five S units less output from a K2 than it is capable of producing. Many people report to get maximum usable audio they run both full mic gain and full or nearly full compression. I've compared output levels from my K2/100 with my IC-746pro and found that both full mic gain and nearly full compression is needed with the K2/100 to get equal output. I was using an electret microphone with the K2/100 that had an advertised output of minus 38 db and a Heil Goldline (HC-5 - wide element) with the IC-746pro. Many receive good audio reports with a variety of microphones but if you set up some simple bench tests you will find that many microphones without proper preamplification will not drive the K2/100 to it's capacity. At one time Heil made at least two microphones for the K2 with a high output amplifier in their elements to provide the correct level for the K2. At this time I think there is only a headset available with the high output. When I purchased my K2/100 I also purchased an MD2 (Heil) microphone that had the correct output. Somehow the element got damaged and needed replacement. I could not get a replacement (long story) so I substituted a commercially available element and run full gain and almost full compression. I've tryed a homebrew preamp and found it troublesome (noise, not variable). My newest thought is to find an equalizer with a built in preamp. This is one thing that Elecraft should address in their upcoming K3 or K2A. -;) Jim, AB0UK K2/100 SN 4787 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. A mic preamp. You can buy some pretty serviceable mixing boards for very little money. Plug your mic into a cheap Behringer UB502 or UB802 mixer and send the output into your rig's mic jack. You'll get variable input gain plus some EQ. While Behringer stuff isn't really all that great, it is more than good enough for ham use. I use an older Behringer 8 channel board with my ham gear. It is a great way to mix the audio from 2 rigs into a single set of headphones. The better Mackie board stays tied to the recording interface on my PC for home studio stuff. - Keith KD1E - - K2 5411 - -Original Message- My newest thought is to find an equalizer with a built in preamp. Good point, Gregg! I have the FL1 BFO frequency on my K2 set for optimum transmit audio (using the OPT1 filter of course). For my taste the receive audio is a bit bright on many signals (not enough low frequency response) so I have the FL2 position BFO frequency set up to shift the passband for a more pleasing response. Since the K2 uses only the OPT1/FL1 settings for transmit, setting up the other filter positions for different audio characteristics has no effect on the transmit audio, even if one is selected for receive when I transmit. Ron AC7AC -Original Message- Just remember also that the OP1 filter for SSB receive is also used on transmit. Re: [Elecraft] RE: Attic Ant.-Closed Loop vs. Open Ends?
Now this method is a bit convoluted, but you could put extra long leads on an ohm meter that will measure low ohms. Start at the feedpoint with one lead, and experimentally tap onto the antenna where you think the 55 foot point is. If you have found the center, you will have the resistance of 55 feet of wire indicated on your meter. You likely know the gauge of your wire, thus, you can use a wire table to predict what 55 feet of that wires should measure on the resistance scale. You will have to zero out the extra long test leads you make to reach to the far side of the loop. The easiest way is to make a test lead of 55 feet and then have short lead and the meter with you as you seek the center on the far side. Other means of accomplishing the same thing, are to find equal capacitance point on far side to each side of the feed point insulator, or equal inductance. However both of those methods may suffer from incidental coupling within the attic. The low ohms method is done at DC to overcome those disadvantages. -Stuart K5KVH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RC, The nylon hardware keeps the toroid from moving mechanically and keeps the frequency stable. It should be a simple matter to just add the hardware to keep it stable. There should be no major change when adding the hardware. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I just completed Assembly Part III resistance checks are Okay... [Elecraft] Small capacitor leadsBend or not bend??
I think this has come up before, but I can't find an answer in the archives. KSB2 manual, page 6 says: The leads on small capacitors do not need to be straightened, but keep their mounted height at about 1/8 (3mm) or less. I find that if I dont straighten them, they stick up about 3/16 or more. If I straighten them, I'm afraid it will mess them up. What to do?? [Elecraft] Small capacitor leadsBend or not bend??
When I constructed my K2, there were at least a dozen smaller disc capacitors - with lead spacing wider than the PCB board holes. In those cases I felt it was better to mount the disc C close to the board and keep the leads short. So in each case, I carefully bent one of the leads at a right angle to the device, and then measuring hole spacing - I would rebend that lead down. Thereby creating the correct spacing of the leads. The K2 came out fine, all to spec, and all tests passed. So I guess I did it ok. Depending on particular C device - I thought that letting the device sit up in the air, with crunched leads - would create a chance of stray RF pickup to and from the device's leads. So I mounted it right down against the board, with a very neat side device wire going over to the PCB's other hole. Fred, N3CSY Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! Looking like ELECRAFT should consider getting into the STEALTH ANTENNA game. A stealth vertical perhaps, one could just lean up against the home. [Elecraft] OT: 50 years
Vic: Congratulations on your 50th year in this wonderful hobby. Your email got me to checking and I also will celebrate the completion of 50 years on the 27th of this month. On November 27, 1956, at the ripe age of 16, I received the callsign KN4LXU. In March 1957 I removed the N from the call when I passed my General class license and in January 1967 I passed the exam for my Extra Class and was issued Amateur Extral Class Radio Operators License Certificate number AE-8M-31. The 31th to be issued in the Mobile, Alabama FCC office. I don't remember the exact date that I changed my callsign to K4ZM but it was during the first chance the FCC offered to Extras and in the early 1970's. Also note that all exams except for the Novice were taken in front of an FCC Engineer and involved drawing diagrams and coping CW. I have been active all 50 years and still have a passion for the hobby. My interest in amateur radio provided me with the first step into my fantastic career in the electronics industry that spanned from Aviation Electronics in the US Navy to Technical Assistance Agent for a local electronics manunfacture and included a short time in electronic sales, service of medical electronics equipment, service of communications equipment and a stent of 21 years as the director of a biomedical department in a local hospital. I retired from the hospital 7 years ago and in August of this year a local electronics manufacture asked me to come out of retirement and provide technical support for its customers. So at 66 I am back in the working world. LOL I hope I have at least 30 more years in amateur radioLOL Thanks for the reminder and the trip down memory lane. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: K2 #5652 speaker
I need to hang my head in shame. After sending the email, I was looking in the schematic to see if there were any other places I could test for a signal. That's when I realized there were 2 P5's. Of course, I had plugged the speaker into the wrong one (on the control board). Plugging it into the correct one makes all the difference! Thanks for your help. I'll be more careful when I start on my KAT2. 73 Jay KA9OKT On 10/30/06, Jay Sissom [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My K2 is working! I finished it and the internal battery pack this weekend. I hear the audio with headphones plugged in, but don't hear anything through the speaker with no headphones plugged in. Can someone give me the pinout of the headphone jack? I wonder if the switch inside the jack isn't working. I've tested the speaker and it's wiring and that seems to be OK. The audio signal doesn't make it to P5. Once I get this fixed, then I have the KAT2, SSB DSP options to build. Thanks 73 Jay ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Small capacitor leadsBend or not bend??
The issue with those leads is that with a little too much pressure pulling on one and you can pull it off! Those caps are actually chip type capacitors, just like the surface mount types, with leads attached to the terminals then the whole thing is dipped in epoxy. Those types of capacitors are not mechanically strong, since they are normally mounted right on a PCB. The epoxy provides the mechanical strength needed to keep from pulling the capacitor apart by handling the leads. If you form the leads carefully without doing significant damage to the epoxy coating, you'll be fine. The thing NOT to do is to tug on one lead while holding the body of the cap or the other lead. When I need to reform the leads, I start by flattening out the little bend where the lead exits the epoxy by squeezing it in the flat part of my needle nose pliers, then gently bending the lead as needed to fit the solder pads. If significant bending is needed, I hold the lead where it exits the epoxy with the thin tip of my needle noise pliers then bend the lead with my finger or another pair of pliers. That way, all the strain is on the lead itself, with no strain placed on the epoxy body. Ron AC7AC -Original Message- I think this has come up before, but I can't find an answer in the archives. Hi Don, Thanks for your advice in the past. I used K2 in the CQ WW SSb contest. When I engaged the KDSP2, I found that there was too much artifact under SSB mode. I would be grateful if you could advise how I can adjust the parameters to lessen the artifact. I notice there are two parameter namely Beta and Decay time. Which one should I adjust? RE: [Elecraft] Mic Gain, K2/100
There's nothing to look for. All you're doing by increasing the value of R14 is increasing the amount of audio from the mic reaching the audio (speech compressor) chip. It has the same effect as screaming into your mic, without all the noise or getting yourself hoarse G. Now, there is a *different* mod that apparently can have bad side effects by over-driving the balanced modulator at the output of the audio chip. That was to swap resistor R14 and R2. R2 is a 5.6 k resistor in the audio line between the speech compressor and the balanced modulator. Replacing it with the 1K from R14 helped increase the gain even more by increasing the drive to the balanced modulator. However, it was suggested that doing so might over-drive the balanced modulator.
