Thanks for your advice in the past. I used K2 in the CQ WW SSb contest.
When I engaged the KDSP2, I found that there was too much artifact under
SSB mode. I would be grateful if you could advise how I can adjust the

Beta and Decay time. Which one should I adjust?

I *almost* completed my K2 with no mistakes. Near the end of one
building session, I had very carefully soldered a resistor into its
place, trimmed the leads and as I checked it off in the book realized I
had the right resistor in the wrong spot! Perfectly mounted, nicely
soldered trimmed.

And of course I lost a couple of parts. Fortunately the spare parts bin
had replacements for me so I wasn't held up.

Oh yea, I had some bad solder joints as well. Reheating a bunch of
connections resulted in issues disappearing.

I suspect that very few builders get through the kit having made zero
errors. I'd much rather have plugged something into the wrong P5 than
to have soldered something incorrectly.

Or worse yet, mounting a chip in the wrong orientation.

Re: [Elecraft] KDSP2 - artifact

2006-10-31 Thread Harvey Howell

Johnny,

Here are the KDSP2 settings I am using. I'm sure they are not optimum but I
am happy with the performance I get. There is quite a bit of QRM here on 80m
SSB and the KDSP2 suppresses most of it so the voice is readable.

nr 94 10
nt 40 07
Sn G 5.0
SF G 7.0

I don't have 80m transmit capability but I like to listen sometimes to the
Canadian traffic nets. I use a little indoor vertical from MFJ and they are
very strong signals here in northern Washington. I usually have the KDSP2
agressiveness set at nr2 or nr3 and the voice is usually intelligible.
Sometimes the QRM is very low and I don't turn on the DSP. I suspect there
are no really perfect settings since each signal being received has its own
characteristics.

Re: [Elecraft] KDSP2 - artifact

2006-10-31 Thread PE1E
Johny,

My 0.02.
Underneath I review my K2 DSP SSB speech NR experiences and not the CW ones
( CW NR works much better ).

I also encountered considerable K2 DSP drawback problems ( I guess everyone
does.. ).
( I know about the free lunch, but even then.. ).
I have been tweaking the beta and decay for hours but whatever I tweaked,
problems still bother the most where you need the NR most, i.e. with weak
signals.

Actually, I encountered three kinds of K2 DSP drawbacks :

1. bothering bath tub song sound
2. seriously decreased intelligibility
3. audio artifacts ( distorted audio and splatter like crack sounds etc. )

The audio sample of the K2 SSB speech NR on Elecrafts website ( which
seduced me to buy the K2 DSP after having asked a question on this to the
Elecraft people, which question was not answered properly ) is kinda
misleading ( sorry Wayne ) in that way that it obviously offers a pretty
strong signal where the NR indeed does not suffer from decreased
intelligibility.
Not quite fair of the Elecraft people, since, in contrary, the NR is needed
most where the sigs are weakest.
I would advocate that the Elecraft people would also offer on their website
an audio sample of a weak signal, where the potential DSP buyer can get some
idea how the intelligibility suffers by the NR as the sigs get weaker.
DSP NR of ( other :-) commercial tranceivers suffers from the very same (
part of the NR concept ) but I feel it wouldn't be a shame for a high
quality concept like our K2 to show these K2 DSP SSB NR limitations to a
potential buyer before he buys.
Some would then decide not to buy this DSP NR.

BTW, the real audio artifacts ( not the bath tub sounds and not the
decreased intelligibility, but the real audio distortion ) are not really
kinda problem ( at least for me ) since they could be easily avoided by
decreasing the DSP gain setting ( drawback remains that e.g. changing filter
settings, changing bands et al requires changing of the gain setting every
time as well ).

The bath tub sounds, critisized repeatedly on this list, are no real problem
for me.
My ears/brain quickly adapt to this and though not pleasant indeed this does
not decrease intelligibility for me.
Funny to let my inmates think I am talking with little green men from Mars.

On the other hand, concluding and to be honest, I must frankly state that
even with weak signals ( be it not the really weakest ones ) the DSP does
improve intelligibility somewhat if ( and only if for me ) the IF filter is
( default ) widest and the audio filter is ( default ) 2 at maximum or even
better at 1.
Disadvantage is that in contest ( as I noticed in the very very crowded cq
www dx contest last weekend ) that selectivity lacks heavily then and
neighbour qrm is hardly endurable.
That's why ( in spite of some different opinions on list some weeks ago in
the IF shift discussions ) I still do appreciate so much my IF shift in my
FT-100 radios ( yes, I do know, please no extra conversion in the K2... ).

And, end of all, having said my griefs on the K2 SSB DSP, with some tweaking
and some good will, the K2 DSP is still more useable for me than I heard on
some commercial radio DSP's.

Do I regret having bought the DSP ?
No, but with some thoughts as exposed above.

I experienced exactly the same in the recent CQww SSb contest. I really

I've heard that the QCWA (Quarter Century Wireless Ass'n) has,
or at least had, a complete set of the old Call Books. It would
at least localize one to a particular time period, if not an

If you find a better answer, please post it for us.

Congrats to everybody who has achieved 50 years in Ham Radio. I am a bit
short of that here.

In reading this thread I wondered if I could find out what source would
contain the date a ham was first licensed ? I admit I do not know when I
got

my
first ticket but it was 4 calls and 6 moves ago. HI ! Somewhere back in

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Re: [elecraft] ANTENNAE LINE THROUGH WALL INTALLATION

2006-10-31 Thread k3yt

Hi Bill,

When we moved into our house 11 years ago
I put a feed through in the concrete block wall.

I used 2 inch PVC. I drew out the size of the
circle I needed and cut out the drywall. Make sure
that there are not any 110v lines where you want
to put the feed through. Also try to place it so you
are going through a hollow spot on the block. Then I
drilled a series of small holes
on the circumference. Then I just hit it with
a hammer and knocked it out. Same for the outside.

I got some stucco patch at Home Depot and patched around
the PVC on the outside. I finished it by putting a 90 degree fitting on as
a weatherhead.

Don't fill it with expanding foam...you'll regret it. A small piece of
fiberglas insulation will keep out wind and critters.

Anyway that is what I didthe cheap way and still is fine.

Went throught Frances, Jeanne and Wilma.

Re: [Elecraft] KDSP2 - artifact

2006-10-31 Thread Lyle Johnson
Hello Johnny!

I experienced exactly the same in the recent CQww SSb contest. I really
want to know how I should adjust the beta and decay time to minimise the
artifact. I don't mind having much less aggressiveness in NR during SSB
 operation.

In some extreme situation during the contest, I simply turned off the KDSP2

Could any of you in the list point me to the right direction?

I suggest you tune in a typical signal and change Beta from 99 to 00 and
back again. This will give you a good idea of what Beta does. Then do
the same for Decay, changing between 99 and 00.

Please also read the Design Notes article about the KDSP2
http://www.elecraft.com/KDSP2/kdsp2design.pdf . It explains the
techniques used and the limitations of the DSP noise reduction system.

There is not best setting of the noise reduction system. The defaults
are a reasonable compromise based on input from the field test team.

Hearing and sound preferences are different each individual. What is
acceptable to me may be very annoying to you, and vice versa.

As signals get weak, they become more like noise and are harder for the
DSP to separate, just like it is harder for you to separate. Noise
reduction will have the best chance to work if the signals are moderate
and the bandwidth is wide. Weak CW signals will come through the noise
reduction system much better than weak voice signals.

I believe that within its limitations, the DSP system does a very good
job. But it cannot do miracles :-)

So, please experiment with the settings, and understand the limitations
of the system.

Hi Al group,

QCWA maintains a library of old Callbook dating back to about 1913 when the
Department of Commerce produced a complete list of stations. Pretty small
book! All member applications are verified by the two person HQ staff. It
helps to have an approximate year to start the search since this is a
manual effort. You just need the original call and best guess on the year.

Congratulations! There is an award for members available from QCWA for 50
years. You got me by 10 years.

[Elecraft] K2 #05810

2006-10-31 Thread Håkan Olsson

K2 s/n 05810 is up and running!

Got the kit last Friday and it's now Tuesday! :-)

No missing or wrong part. Instructions very easy to follow! All three
smoke tests went without any kind of problems at all. Output pwr not 15,
but 12 watts on 20 meter, but that should be OK, I think...

Building the the K1 a few years back was much much more difficult. Parts
were missing, parts were broken (or I broke them) and all kinds of
difficulties. Took me three months to get that kit together and working
properly.

However, now only remains the hardest part; aligning the filters on my
new K2 and, of course, to compare it to my old trusty IC-703 to confirm
that I have not totally wasted my money

Morning Ron and Group - I too was an early 1950s young teen ager with a
new WN7VZX call not not long after the novice license was created. In
those days the FCC was still going through the available W7 three letter
combinations in order the first time since starting in the late 1920s.
A few years later they went back and reissued the old calls that had
been dropped and my dad received WN7AVK. Which I asked for and
received after his passing. :-)

Received a couple years ago a very nice wall hanging from the ARRL
saying I have been a LIFE MEMBER for 50 years. In those days life
member ship was calculated as 20 times a single year dues. Remember it
cost me $120. A very big sum when receivers like the SX-71 were selling
for $250.

RE: [elecraft] ANTENNAE LINE THROUGH WALL INTALLATION

2006-10-31 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
It may sound like overkill to drill at a downward angle toward the outside
in most installations, but it's an excellent idea in addition to a good drip
loop, especially for frame houses that have walls made of wood and other
organic materials. Even a small amount of moisture from snow building up
right on the fitting where it exits the wall or the small amount of rain
that will contact it directly can seep inside and start dry rot and other
problems.

Here in the northwest mold is a real concern. It's not just a nuisance, but
a life-threatening concern that has killed people, especially children, who
are unlucky enough to breath the air containing the spores. A couple of
years ago a builder left some tiny gaps in wood siding on a new home that
allowed moisture to seep in. Deadly black mold to started growing. Once
started it spread drawing moisture from the air. By the time it was
discovered because the family was suffering health problems, a new, 1.5
million dollar home had to be totally demolished and much of it disposed of
as toxic waste, complete with the crews working in bunny suits inside a tent
loading the remains of the house into sealed bags.

When you're running open wire feeders or a single end-fed wire, good
electrical insulation is important too unless the power is very low. Heyes,
in his book Practical Wire Antennas tells a story about visiting a fellow
Ham in England who used an end-fed wire that came into the shack through a
small hole drilled in the wood frame of a window. On one band a voltage loop
occurred at that point. Whenever the guy transmitted, smoke would curl up
out of the hole where the wire touched the wood. Heyes observed that he was
not aware that the Fire Brigade ever had to visit, but it didn't seem like a
good way to get the RF outside G.

Re: [Elecraft] Attic Antenna

2006-10-31 Thread Stuart Rohre
Hi antenna challenged fellow hams. You can do your own stealth gutter
antenna these days.

Two easy ways: 1) Get a combination of metal gutter and one short
section of plastic gutter to join two metal halves of a dipole. Remember,
you can use shorter than quarter wave lengths of elements, since their cross
section is large compared to wavelength.

2) Even easier: Get all plastic. Lay dipole elements in bottom of plastic
gutter. Even hook up wire can be used for elements. Glue them to corner of
gutter bottom that will be furtherest from the house. Better still, glue
them UNDER the gutter corner, so water in gutter will not stand on antenna
wire. Use 1/4 inch coax feed to feedpoint, or twin lead, again glued to
underside of gutter. Run it into soffit, and then to rig.
An all band tuner, will facilitate operations on multiple bands, especially
if the dipole is at least 60 per cent of a half wave for the lowest
frequency of interest.

Your nearest Lowe's or Home Depot is already a stealth antenna store, and
you did not know it. Even coax can be purchased there!

I regularly use insulators and standoff's from Home Depot's electric fence
department for various home antenna projects. They have a compression
spring for electric fence gates that is ideal for relieving stress in a
dipole element tied to a tree. Unlike a door spring which is extension
type, this spring will not elongate with use. At least, not as much as
extension springs.

[Elecraft] SSB output overshoot

2006-10-31 Thread Mike Harris
G'day,

When I run the K2/100 into my Acom 1000 I usually set the requested power
to about 30 - 35W. I seldom drive the amp more than 400 - 500W output.

On CW all is fine but on SSB I notice there is a severe overshoot on the
output for the first syllable after changing to TX and after a few seconds
pause in talking. With the K2/100 barefoot at 30W requested, on CW the RF
bar is steady on 3 but on SSB it overshoots to 4-5 before settling at 3.
At present the K2 is set up as twins with the KPA100 co-located with the
KAT100.

Anyone else noticed this? It would be interesting to put a scope on the
output to monitor what happens to the RF level, unfortunately I don't have
one.

On 40M SSB problem is particularly severe, CW no problem.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

[Elecraft] Wall caution

2006-10-31 Thread Ken Kopp
Don't forget that many homes today use foil-backed insulation.
The foil is ... obviously ... conductive. I use two 1/4 x 20 threaded
brass rods with cone insulators on both the inside and outside of
the wall. I made larger holes and removed the foil around both
holes before installing the feed-throughs.

Perhaps some caution about the accuracy of wattmeters
might be in order. Might be unwarranted concern. (:-))

[Elecraft] OT 50 years

2006-10-31 Thread Hank Kryger

Congrats to Vic with 50 years, a golden year.

I still have a few years left before 50. Got my license in 1962,
KN7TPC, subsequently WA8MSG and since 1965 WA9QJH. My first rig was a
Heath DX60 and HR10. So with the K2 rig building continues. Glad the
Elecraft guys keep coming out with super kits to build. thanks guys.

Re: [Elecraft] SSB output overshoot

2006-10-31 Thread Bill Acito W1PA

Mike, I notice the opposite (but when running full power: 100-110W).

The first couple of syllables are lower, and then it kicks up. I'll try
reducing power and see if it goes in the other direction.

I was told that the previous effect was normal (action of the ALC).

Re: [Elecraft] SSB output overshoot

2006-10-31 Thread Don
Same thing here, with or without an external amp. CW is as expected. But
when switching to SSB I will get full output (sometimes well over 100 watts)
at any power setting over 11 watts and sometimes cause a shutdown of my
power supply and a reboot of the K2/100. This behavior goes away when I
press RF/ALC to switch the bar display to ALC. I have been told there is a
mod that may cure the problem but I have not done anything. I just make a
point of switching to ALC display whenever I operate SSB.

Don K7FJ

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

[Elecraft] no audio sidetone for CW

2006-10-31 Thread John Wiener
I recently had a glitch with the ATU going out of Auto mode but
before I figured it out, I hard reset my K2.

I have since gone back and recal'd PLL and filter settings and
readjusted S-meter.

I now do not get a CW sidetone on transmit. Adjustments to St L and
St P result in muted audio.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

RE: [Elecraft] no audio sidetone for CW

2006-10-31 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
The reset gave you the wrong source for the sidetone. It's selected in the
MENU.

MENU - St L - MENU (to enable the sidetone level set), then tap DISPLAY.
It'll toggle between the two sidetone sources, U6-25 and U8-4. Since you
don't have sidetone now, one tap should restore it.

RE: [Elecraft] no audio sidetone for CW

2006-10-31 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

You need to change the sidetone source in the menu.

Enter the menu for ST L, edit the parameter, then tap the DISPLAY button
until you hear sidetone.
