Re: [Elecraft] K3: Remote Control Questions

2007-04-30 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
Maybe option to stop TX unless keepalive CAT command received in the last x
seconds. While sending the software could send a keepalive message, maybe
(for much later) power down radio as well (assumption is that internet
connection lost).

Also the ability to disable TX via a hardware jumper - radio can be made
available for anyone to use for receiving but without the ability to
transmit. Later enable/disable transmit via passwords (for the radio
administrator).

[Elecraft] Up- and Downgrading the K3

2007-04-30 Thread dj7mgq
Hi,

What will the downgrading of the K3 involve?

For example a K3 with subreceiver would not be a legal TRX for the IARU Region 1
FD in the limited class. In this class no secondary RXs are allowed, so to
legalize the K3, the KRX3 would need to be removed.

A major open heart operation? Something which can done in a few minutes the

[Elecraft] K2, K60XV

2007-04-30 Thread Ken Chandler
Hi Elecrafters
I'm very very happy at the moment with my new K2 100 serial 05877,
worked loads of stations and having fun /P also.
I have all I need now in this radio. This weekend I built and installed
the K60XV 5MHz unit and this morning 0830hrs local time, I'm tuned into
5.290.00MHz monitoring GB3ORK, UK beacon in Orkney, north of Scotland,
some 900 plus miles North of my qth NR London.
I thought I would like to mention that in RadCom magazine this month the
UK, 5MHz working group has suggested a frequency of 5.289.00 or
5.291.00MHz for CW working.
The beacon frequency on 5.290.00 should be kept clear for monitoring
etc.
More info can be found in the United Kingdom by looking at the link
below.
The UK beacons are GB3RAL, GB3WES, GB3ORK.

Cheers

How good is the transmitter IMD performance? I was also wondering

so common in many Japanese radios. Would the K3 meet the NTIA

I was also wondering what final PA transistors or FET's are used

I like Ed [EMAIL PROTECTED] idea, perhaps just boil it down to

And

Some other suggestions

1. K3 - Just K3 on the T shirt and the web address in large letters.
Black T Shirt with White lettering... or is that to close to Yaesu!
2. K3 Big 3 - You could add a question mark on the end, or is that just
too cryptic!

Craig, our goal is to create the highest-performance panadapter available.
This project will be kicked off soon, and we may see it by the end of the year.

There will be a lot of debate about the display in a panadapter or bandscope.
Size, cost, color (Orion I), and resolution all will be a factor. My opinion
is, don't put one in or at least have a model available without one. LCD
displays are so plentiful these days and many have one or more in the shack
already. Make the panadapter or bandscope available with just a VGA output.
It will be smaller, cheaper and more versatile.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: roofing filter loss and method of compensation

2007-04-30 Thread Bill Tippett

KK7P:
With the IF DSP in the K3, the issues that are
of concern in a fully analog radio are less important.

As long as the crystal filter, which is being
used as a roofing filter, has reasonably good
skirts and ultimate rejection, the DSP will take
care of the rest. The first 20 dB or so of skirt
selectivity, the passband ripple, and the
ultimate rejection at the DSP IF image frequency are the most critical factors.

Below W2VJN (ex-Inrad) says the first ~30 dB of
skirt selectivity is key for IMD issues. It will be important
for you to specify actual IMD and BDR performance with
each of the various CW filters installed. So far I count 4
that are 500 Hz or less, not counting the variable BW
option. I hope you can post this information soon so
that those planning to order will have information to
properly configure a unit.

73, Bill W4ZV

http://www.qth.com/inrad/roofing-filters.pdf (page 6)

5. If 6 poles work so well, why not 8 poles?
The most important part of the filter
characteristic is from the pass-band on down

to about –30 dB on either side of center. Eight poles would provide much better
stop-band isolation, but it’s not required in a
roofing filter and would make no

noticeable improvement in IMD performance.

If the transmitter drops out due to the timer, it needs to reset itself

[Elecraft] K3 production capability?

2007-04-30 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL

Gents:

Well, the info you (Wayne, Lyle) have provided so far is just great
and totally impressive. My mouth is watering and I'm getting ready to
dump (I mean sell) my other radios, except for my K2.

So you have provided an estimate of when delivery will start...thanks.

Just what is your production capability and ramp up time by month? If
you get 1000 orders within 30 days of Dayton, when would expect Radio
#1000 to go out?

[Although I do note that radio 05000 is already pictured on the web..LOL]

If I want a radio (or two) in hand for contest season, how late
could I order and be assured of actuallyl having it in hand? This
question is designed so as to prompt some thinking. I am not looking
for a concrete answer, which is probably impossible at this point.

One of the big dissatifiers with other brands is Great Hype followed
by very delayed and/or very, very slow delivery (aka trickle). You
clearly have your design ducks in a row...how about your production
ducks? Is Lisa growing more arms?

thanks!

2007-04-30 Thread Barry N1EU

A question, a suggestion, and a coupla comments:

Am I correct in assuming that you need to order the KXV3 Xverter
interface in order to get the RX ANT input?

Please provide the capability to disable transmitting on the 2nd
Antenna, to allow the possibility of using a second rx antenna.

Comments based on 4 years of Orion useage:
1. In the Orion, the 600hz 4-pole xtal roofing filter is all that is
needed for cw ahead of the dsp, in even the toughest conditions (160M
cw contests) with adjacent s9++ signals and tightest selectivity
settings. Not sure if this will hold true for the K3, but it should
be predictable based on the dynamic range downstream.
2. I NEVER use the Hi/Lo Cut controls (in favor of Width/PBT-Shift)
and not sure that anyone else does.

[Elecraft] K2 - Countersunk Screws?

2007-04-30 Thread Ken Kopp

Bruce,

Use a drill bit's tip as a countersink tool? Oh dear!

There are real countersink tools available that will
produce nice, even countersinking. Inquire at a
machine-tool supplier. They come in a variety of

sizes amd have a smooth conical tip with a single
round hole forming the cutting surface. The drill bit
idea, unless done very carefully by hand, is certain to
produce three-cornered countersinking.

I've thought of using flat or oval-head SS screws on
my K2 but I'd first want to be certain the panels are
thick enough to allow proper-depth countersinking.

[Elecraft] K3 Suggestions

2007-04-30 Thread J F
Hi Wayne,
I'm behind the curve on this, and have not sorted thru

Would it be possible to offer an internal antenna

Will any of the K2 accessories (KRC2 KAT100) be
compatible?

Glad you announced this, was contemplating a TenTec
Omni VII (sacrilegious I know) or some other rig to
have 6M...

Guess I'll part with one of my K2s (and some other

The only pseudo disappointment for me is the lack of

R: [Elecraft] ELECRAFT K3

2007-04-30 Thread Paolo Gramigna

Now Darling, where's that old K3 I put away in the attic in 1982?

1) have the kit delivered somewhere else, e.g. your friendly garage;
2) throw away the original box and shipping documents;
3) liberally dust all the parts, and especially the front panel, with face
powder; smear the transparent parts with paper glue, simulating scratches
(not a permanent damage but very convincing);
4) try to remove the face dust using a piece of waste, thus leaving a lot of
fine lines along all the corners (best way to have something new looking
years old; good for customs too)
5) take the manual and thumb it a lot with well dirty and greasy hands;
6) mark around many of the manual's pages with a lot of tick marks, arrows,
and so on;
7) trample on it, and half-tear the schematic diagram pages;
8) throw all parts together in a big, ugly, well beaten grocery carton box;
9) on a Saturday morning, have a friendly OM calling you, announcing the
death of some OM down there at just 15 miles away, and suggesting a visit to
the garage auction his wife is already, hastily organizing while the poor
boy is still warm in the coffin;
10) come home with the old box, wires dangling all around and a BIG smile on
your face, all the while congratulating yourself for your sheer luck in
recognizing some useful half-done kit buried in that garbage;
11) mount the kit but leave out some parts of the case; blame the deceased
and his stupid wife for having lost those parts (this will be the real
finest of the tricks);
12) after a LNG while, finish the kit but leave the face powder in
place, so the last panels (previously washed and lightly oiled) will look
slightly different.

I did it a couple of times, and wife never found the trick. Maybe you shall
inform all visiting OM not to give you away...

Cheers,
IK4YNG Paolo

[Elecraft] Am I the 1st Aussie order ?

2007-04-30 Thread Keith Bainbridge
Just placed my order for the K3, it will be some time before the HPSDR
project produces a fully operational HF radio and I cant wait, I want
the best now !
I love my K2 but it does have operational limitations and I can see the
K3 will be so much easier to operate.
One thing I dislike immensely about my K2 is the receive audio from the
speaker, or even an external speaker. I use a Sansui HiFi amp to improve
things here, will the K3 have better rx audio?
I'm an SSB operator 99% of the time with digital modes sometimes, but
the K2 is soo far behind my OmniVI opt 3 that I sometimes dread
listening to it.

Hopefully this will be addressed in the K3 so I will take my chances !
Great product, great service and even though I'm a Pommie living in
Australia the best radios still come from the good old US of A.

The RX in and RX Out jacks are part of the KXV3 option.

The KAT3 has two antenna jacks. The K3 without a KAT3 has one.

5. Are there any options that must be installed

Options can be added in any order. Options that must be combined are
usually supplied combined. For example, the subreceiver option includes
the subreceiver itself, as well as a second DSP board. These two items
are only available as a single option.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 - Countersunk Screws?

I did that about a year ago, works fine. I ordered a bunch of
different screws from Lisa (the one that goes underside the VFO

The body DOES get a little weaker this way, but it's still fine
because there's many screws to do the job.

Re: [Elecraft] Question about K3 firmware

2007-04-30 Thread Lyle Johnson

(I assum the DSP is programmed down to the silicon).

I've had several private questions about the DSP. I'll combine the
information and make it public here :-)

The K3's DSP is a Texas Instruments TMS320VC33-150 embedded DSP, not a
PC CPU from Intel or AMD or VIA.  There is one DSP chip per receiver;
the subreceiver option includes a PC board assembly incorporating the
second DSP.

The TMS320VC33 is a 32-bit, floating point processor that we chose for
its performance, low power consumption, and the fact it has been in the
marketplace long enough to have a completely functional silicon along
with a development tool suite that is stable.

The DSP firmware is written in assembly language, and is original. It
does not borrow from any GPL'ed sources or use any commercial function
libraries. It does not run on a formal operating system.

Much of the DSP peripheral support hardware is contained in a
flash-based programmable logic device. This enables us to connect a
very high performance 24-bit A/D converter for the receiver IF, two more
channels of greater-than 16-bit A/D for microphone and PC input, and
several more channels of less-than 16-bit A/D for more mundane things
like forward and reflected power, upstream signal level detection, and
so forth. It also connects six D/A channels, lets the DSP check some
digital I/O lines (e.g., to support true FSK generation) -- and to
communicate with the control processor!

Oh, and it enables the DSP's Flash memory to be programmed by the user :-)

Lyle KK7P

[Elecraft] K2 #5813 still FB

2007-04-30 Thread wd4lst
So, after reading about 300 posts, I decided to take a breather, massage my
mouse clicking index finger and take a chance. With both fear and trepidation,
I first turned on the dc supply, then
the K2 - played around on 40m - lo and behold, it is just as awesome of a radio
as it was 2 days ago.
All the mojo is still there.
Looking forward to learning more about the K3. I was thinking about an Xverter
for 6 meters with the K2, but I might have th rethink that.
I just wish that I could make it to Dayton to see the little monster.
No plans on parting with the K2 (although the IC718 just went up on the block!!)

Tom,

The KPA800/1500 amplifiers will work with any rig, including the K2 and

We plan an external speaker/power supply unit for the K3 someday, as

[Elecraft] K3 query

2007-04-30 Thread Dick Hanson
This may have already been mentioned, but in case it wasn't

In the K2, there were/are some issues for those of us who wish to operate
the radio with their transverters, on CW, in the PTT mode instead of
break-in. I think I recall that the problem stemmed from several things
competing for time on one of the ICs which control timing of events etc. As
it is, if you close the push to talk line, you are not just in TX mode, you
are transmitting CW, thereby rendering useless any sequencing you may have
in line.

Don, W3FPR, came up with a workaround, which I have been using on VHF/UHF.

I am hopeful that this issue has been addressed in the K3??

Re: [Elecraft] Re: KAT3 Question

2007-04-30 Thread Bill W5WVO
Does the 2:1 capability at 100W output also apply to 6M? If not, what will
it match on 6M at 100W?

At what SWR does the protection (automatic power reduction) kick in? Is this
different on different bands? What about 6M? (Do I sound like a broken
record?)

Bill / W5WVO

PS - I don't think I've ever seen any other tuner advertisement/brochure etc
that owns up to the fact that SWR and power combine to limit the ability of
the tuner to match a load. Though this is obvious to anybody who understands
what SWR is, it probably isn't at all obvious to the majority of hams. Kudos
for being technically honest!

wayne burdick wrote:

Yes. But the maximum load SWR that can be handled will depend on the
power level, just as with other tuners. At 10 watts, the tuner will
match even some 20:1 loads. At 100 watts, it's likely to be 2:1.

[Elecraft] K2/100, KAT100-1 and extras for Sale

2007-04-30 Thread Gregg R. Lengling
I’m entertaining offers for my K2 in order to justify buying a K3.

K2 S# 3075, professionally built. Includes KPA 100, KNB2, KSB2, K160RX ,
MH2, KDSP2, FDIMP and KAT100-1.

Rig has been upgraded to PLL temp compensated upgrade kit. Professionally
aligned using IFR1200S and spectrogram (including RTTY filters for PSK and
digital modes)

All manuals and documentation included.

As a bonus included will be XG2 Signal Generator and DL1 20 watt dummy
load.

All in mint condition, great rig hate to get rid of it…but the XYL says if I
want a K3 I can’t have both.

(After she gets over it, I’ll probably order a new K2 just for something to
build and to give me a portable rig.)

[Elecraft] K3 QUESTIONS: Please send them ONLY to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

2007-04-30 Thread wayne burdick

Hi all,

Now that the K3 has been the subject of intense discussion for three
days, it's time for a change of strategy!

Please send ALL questions to ONLY [EMAIL PROTECTED] rather than post
them to the list. I'll get them to the right person or answer them
myself, as time permits.

If I don't answer right away, you can assume I'm adding the info to our
FAQ. I'm also saving all suggestions for firmware or features.

This will free up the reflector for a wider range of subjects.

Thanks,
Wayne

RE: [Elecraft] taking the K3 thing to another list!

2007-04-30 Thread Craig Rairdin
I was going through about 100+ Elecraft emails late last night and nodded
off with my finger on the delete key. I accidentally deleted a whole bunch
of saved email from my Elecraft folder with no way to figure out which ones
they were short of going back through several months of deleted email and
manually picking out the Elecraft emails I wanted to keep. So I understand
the problem with getting too many in one day. :-)

You might want to change your subscription options at
http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft to put yourself in
vacation mode for a week or two until this dies down. Log into your
account and disable the Mail delivery option.

Or just set up a rule in your email client to deep-six all messages with
[Elecraft] and K3 in the subject.

100 or more emails a day asking for details on the K3 is to much. PLEASE;
start a new group; better yet; let elecraft do their thing. they will do it
so much better if you leave them alone.

Sorry, but this is total nonsense. The rig will be the rig and the details
will come out when it is ready.
In the meantime.. leave them alone to do what they do best!

[Elecraft] Countersinking screws

2007-04-30 Thread Jeremiah McCarthy
Countersinking screws in a home shop without the proper tools can be
frustrating...If you have a drill press and can securely clamp the panel so
that it cannot wander, you might succeed...Even so, the bit itself can flex and
chatter, resulting in a triangular hole...Feeding the bit into the cut very
slowly helps, but it is no guarantee that it will not chatter...

It is next to impossible to countersink holes using a hand held drill motor
even if the panel is clamped in a vise...The cutting angle of twist drills is
not necessarily uniform...It depends on the hardness of the material they were
intended to drill into...Bits bought from surplus clearing houses are sometimes
sharpened to odd angles...

In industry, countersinks have a smooth pilot-pin protruding from the center of
the cutter that is the same size as the screw hole...The pilot bears against
the sides of the hole and keeps the countersink from wandering...These tools
have from 4 to 6 cutting edges, resulting in smooth cutting...Twist drills only
have 2 cutting edges and no pilot and this causes chatter...These countersinks
have a built in adjustable depth controlling device...If you do not cut deep
enough, the screw will protrude above the panel...If you cut too deep, the
screw will seat below the surface of the panel and you will have a silver ring
of bare metal showing all around the screw head...

I would not advise trying to countersink the screws in your prized K-2 unless
you have the tools and the skills...

[Elecraft] When will we see the K4?

It actually just hit me that we did have the big question just under a year

When will the K3 arrive?
We do not have such plans I think to remeber was the answer..
It seems that the K3 was quite into production run then.. :-)

So...When will we see the K4?

Well..Actually I would want the K3 with a 400watt PA internally.
Maybe that will be the K4?

[Elecraft] Re: K3 Suggestions

2007-04-30 Thread J F
Thanks for the reply Wayne!

I like most of what I've read (haven't dived really
deep into it). After some housecleaning (read sell-off
of non used junk), I anticipate buying a K3 this Fall,
with several options.

Still cheaper, with filters and options, than anything
else on the market with similar specs...

I enjoyed building all my K2 stuff, and to some degree
will miss the board stuffing and such. On the other
hand, after building the relatively simple micro908
antenna analyzer (with larger SM devices), I don't
have the time to do a full blown SM kit. I have to
think this would be an 80+ hour job. Fun if you have
the time and space to do the work undisturbed, but no
so if you don't...

The semi-kit form sounds like we can still have some
hands on, yet attract folks who aren't real kit
builders AND maybe they will say Hey! This is fun!
and want to do a K1 or K2 in the future.

All in all, win/win IMHO... I spread the news to the
TCG (some of whom are still chomping at the bit for
Elecraft Amps).

Thanks for listening! (Even without the analog meter
hihi)

Re: [Elecraft] Up- and Downgrading the K3

2007-04-30 Thread Toby Deinhardt

Hi Lyle,

Or just set the subreceiver AF GAIN to zero?

That is a no go - the CW SSB FDs here in DL have umpires, who drive
around checking that the antennas, distance to the next building,
distance to the power grid, rigs etc. are compliant with the rules. If
the rules say no secondary RX then that means NO secondary RX. For
example you could not legally use the Orion in the limited class.

These FDs are very important to our local club as part of the german
club championship, i.e. we can not afford to even bend the rules too
far.

For example a K3 with subreceiver would not be a legal TRX for the
IARU Region 1
FD in the limited class. In this class no secondary RXs are
allowed, so to

legalize the K3, the KRX3 would need to be removed.

A major open heart operation? Something which can done in a few

[Elecraft] FW: K2/100, KAT100-1 and extras for Sale

2007-04-30 Thread Gregg R. Lengling

Updated as a number of people has me to set an asking price. Total package
cost me with upgrades and what-not over $1800.00.

So I'll set an asking price of $1450.00 with shipping and insurance
included to the lower 48 states.

[Elecraft] K3 real time clock - backup battery?

2007-04-30 Thread David Ferrington
The K3 has a very versatile real-time-clock chip that runs when the rig
is off. It draws about 3 microamps as I recall. If you have an alarm
set, it will wake up the radio at the appointed time.

Is there some form of backup while its off the main power, like being
carried to a field location?

I'm reading the archives, having rejoined the reflector just to read about
and decide on a K3, so forgive me if I missed this.

K2 - 2nd highest mountain in the world (and a rig).
K3 - 1st radio that is out of this world.

[Elecraft] How do you travel with the K2?

2007-04-30 Thread David Fleming
It's mighty quite around here all of a sudden.

I'll be taking the K2 with me and the family on vacation this summer.
I'm trying to come up with a good way to package the rig for the
flight. I've never traveled with a radio before. I'll be taking the K2,
KAT100-1, MFJ-4225MV (I know, but it seems to be a fairly decent little
power supply), headset/mic, bencher paddles, cables, wire, some tools,
etc. My first thought was to give everything a good bubble wrapping and
put it all in a sturdy (hard shell) suitcase and be done with it. But I
can't treat my K2 that way. I'm thinking the best solution (within
reason) would be to buy a Pelican 1650 with the pluck foam and make a
nice cubby hole in the foam for everything. Or I could put the K2 and
KAT in a much smaller case and take it carry-on and put everything else
in a suitcase. Those Pelican cases are a bit pricey though. How do ya'll
(yous guys) do it?

My pitches:

Elecraft K3
What's in your shack?

(play off AmEx ads)

Because Agilent doesn't make transceivers
or
Because Rohde Schwarz don't make amateur transceivers

K3: Thank goodness, Amateur Radio is dying.
I couldn't handle any more excitement.

So what if it doesn't cost the price of a new car?

K-3: Not necessary the divorce-maker

(play off of K-19: The Widowmaker)

Elecraft K3
World domination never looked so easy

(and my favourite:)

[Elecraft] Help with K2 recieve troubleshooting

2007-04-30 Thread Brian
Hello everyone,

I am having trouble figuring out where to go next with my troubleshooting.
Here is what I have so far.

I have poor receive on all bands. The 1st thing I did was check my
soldering. Then I did the cheap and dirty signal tracing as suggested by
N0SS. Here are my results from that.

I tuned into a loud broadcast station on 7256 khz. I was receiving 5 led
lights with the antenna plugged in normally. (this station was 60db over s9
on my TS-2000)

Using the recommended probe I got the following:

1 RF Board (2 of 4), C143, input to the TUF-1 Receive Mixer.

6 led lights

2 RF Board (2 of 4), C141, input to the Preamp. Test with the preamp ON and
OFF.

Signal levels should drop somewhat (but not disappear) when the Preamp is
OFF.

8 led lights (preamp on) 6 led lights (preamp off)

3 RF Board (2 of 4), C53, input to the Attenuator. Test with Atten. ON and
OFF. Signal

levels should drop somewhat (but not disappear) when the Attenuator is ON.

4 led lights (att on) 6 led lights (att off)

4 RF Board (2 of 4), D6, output of the BPF (Band-Pass Filter).

9 led lights

5 RF Board (3 of 4), junction of C4 C5, wiper of K1a (output 40M BPF).

9 led lights

6 RF Board (3 of 4), junction of C7 C8, wiper of K1b (input 40M BPF).

9 led lights

7 RF Board (3 of 4), Jumper W6, input to BPF.

9 led lights

8 RF Board (3 of 4), junction of D2 D3, part of the T-R switch

9 led lights

9 RF Board (3 of 4), junction of D3 D4, part of the T-R switch

Flux from 4-6 led lights

10 RF Board (3 of 4), Jumper W1, output of LPF (Low-Pass Filter)

5 led lights

11 RF Board (3 of 4), C225, wiper of K12a, output of 40M LPF

5 led lights

12 RF Board (3 of 4), C226 middle of 40M LPF

3 led lights

13 RF Board (3 of 4), C227, wiper of K12b, input of 40M LPF

5 led lights

I'm really stumped at this point. Any and all help would be appreciated.
