Re: [Elecraft] Comparison: K3 and SDR 5000A

2007-10-10 Thread Lyle Johnson
As I understand it, latency is no longer an issue. Latency issues with
the early versions of PowerSDR and the SDR-1000 have been resolved.
That being said, signal processing latency is a fact of life for all
digital radios. We are talking microseconds,

I beg to differ.

Latency (delay) in a DSP-based radio (or SDR, if you prefer) is caused
by several things.

The one we can't get rid of is the filter delay. By making shorter
filters (fewer taps), we can reduce the delay through the filter, but at
the expense of filter performance. We get wider skirts, less ultimate
rejection, more passband ripple, or some combination of these three factors.

However, DSP can be applied in many ways. One sure way to increase
latency is by processing the incoming signal in blocks. This means you
collect a certain number of samples, then process them all at once while
collecting the next block, etc. PC implementations of DSP typically use
this method.

Another method is to process the signal after each sample. This
eliminates the block delay. This is how the K3 processes signals.

As an example, let's consider an SDR using 2048-sample blocks (common in
the SDR world) and 96 kHz sampling. It will take (2048/96,000 =) 22
milliseconds to acquire this block. This is 22 ms more delay, or
latency, than a K3 will have, assuming similar delays in each radio for
the filter(s).

For a real world example, I connected an SDR-14 receiver (with
associated dual core 3 GHz PC) to the IF output of my K3. I then tuned
in an SSB signal and listened to it through the K3's speaker as well as
demodulating it and listening through the PC's audio system.

The audio coming from the PC was very noticeably delayed versus the
audio from the K3.

This delay or latency may not be an issue in all cases. But in come
common operational scenarios, like QSK CW or SSB using syllabic VOX,
it can be critical. By paying close attention to such latency issues in
the architecture of the K3, we are able to provide QSK CW operation at
speeds well over 30 WPM without reducing the taps in the filters or
otherwise compromising the performance of the radio. The 22 ms
additional delay cited in the example above would kill QSK performance.

Latency is just one of many considerations that arise when comparing
radios, architectures, and one's own needs and preferences.

Lyle KK7P

[Elecraft] K3 shipping

2007-10-10 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

Sorry to add to all the mail, but I see there appears to have been changes
to latter production runs of the K3’s, as per the shipping schedule page.

New K3 (3rd Pr. run) orders received after Oct 1st are scheduled for
shipment in early January.

I assume by this that runs 1 and 2 have been made bigger, as from memory, I
was in Run 3 when I ordered back in mid-June.

Apologies if I've missed something here, but can't remember reading anything
about this ??

Cheers

2007-10-10 Thread Darwin, Keith
I placed my order in late Sept. That puts me squarely in the 3rd
production run but prior to the Oct 1 date. Could it be that they're
saying only orders after Oct 1 are scheduled for early Jan but earlier
3rd run orders are still targeted for Dec?

I think there is a LOT of stuff to happen between now and then. The
prediction of when they will ship is a lot like the weather report here
in the eastern USA - wishful thinking. I'm going to sit patiently and
wait for my K3/10. I'll have a lot of fun with my K2/100 in the
interim. If some extra money appears, I'll probably change my order to
a K3/100. Eventually a box will appear and my fun will shift.

Until then, I'll continue to watch the ship predictions knowing that
they are only rough estimates, not promises, and that they are affected
by some elements completely out of Elecraft's control (much like the
weather).

What do you guys use - I suppose it depends on mode and how much split?

[Elecraft] Magnetic Fields

2007-10-10 Thread Dave Jeanne Robertson
To All,

First to the good people at elecraft, congratulations on shipping the K3s.

Second:

This may have been presented to the forum before but I have not seen it.

Be careful with exposing your K2 to strong magnetic fields, especially ones
from power transformers.

I just finishing restoring an old Heathkit SB220 linear and in setting up the
station placed the linear to the left of the K2.

When I was using the linear I started to notice some strange distortion in the
received audio from the K2 and other stations commented on distortion on my
audio.

On CW all the received signals seem to have a strange AC ripple on them. It was
a very small amount but still there. Stations receiving me also reported a
slight amount of ripple on my signal.

All this is while the linear was on but not necessarily being used (I installed
a Standby switch in the SB220).

With the linear powered down, everything was perfectly normal, both on received
 and transmitted signals.

The power transformers in the SB220 are on the linear's right side. This was
the side the K2 was located near.

I rearranged the station to have an antenna coupler between the K2 and the
SB220 linear, a spacing of about 10 inches, and that totally solved the AC
ripple problem both on transmit and receive with the linear powered up and
on-line.

Just thought I would pass this on to everyone.

Split situations for me are nearly always for an entity I need, usually
DXpeditions. I always use SPLIT on the K2 because I can fix my TX
freq, and I can adjust it separate from the RX as the pile-up changes.
I've probably used RIT for a quick split operation maybe twice. The
problems with RIT:

1. Changing your TX freq with the VFO changes your RX freq too

2. For comfortable use, the range on the RIT needs to be smaller. The
K2 lets me choose, but big ranges make it very hard to tune with the
little knob.

I've never used XIT.

[Elecraft] Standby for a Great Manual!

2007-10-10 Thread Rick Tavan N6XI
As a reviewer of the draft Owners Manual, I've got to tell you that you're
in for a treat later today when Wayne puts a revised version up on the Web
site. Not that any of the Elecraft Faithful will be surprised - quality
documentation has always been a high order value at Elecraft. I think it's
an important differentiator. So many manufacturers of ham radio equipment
(or any kind of technology, for that matter) seem to think that the manual
is one of those Dumb Things I Gotta Do. Their docs tend to be nothing but a
list of buttons, dials, connectors and commands and (sort of) what they do.
The Elecraft docs also tell you how to use the product and how it works.
This one includes a lot of what tech writers call task-oriented
documentation that explains the sequence of operations needed to achieve a
real operational goal. There is a good Quick Start section for the huge
majority who neither want nor need to read every last word. But do read
those words eventually. Even as an active field tester, I learned several
new tricks to make my K3 work better just by reading the draft. Take
particular note of the Theory of Operation section which provides just the
right amount of detail for the ham who wants to know what's inside the box.
You're going to like it.

have had quotes at $0.87/page in color and $0.50 in b/w.

I see that TAPR is offering the 168 page DCC Conference

[Elecraft] K3 Manual Question

2007-10-10 Thread Craig D. Smith

Great news on the K3 manual being put up on the website sometime this week.
I know it will be excellent based on my experience with the K1 and K2
manuals. But it prompts me to ask a question I've been wondering about
lately.

How does Elecraft plan to handle updates to the manual so that it keeps
current with new firmware releases? Certainly the pdf can be kept
up-to-date, but how about the printed version? It is nice to have a high
quality printed version, and I wouldn't mind paying a reasonable amount to
keep my printed operating manual up-to-date. I guess the options would be
reprinting the entire manual or maybe making the pages replaceable
individually in some kind of attractive and convenient sized binder system.
Any thoughts?

To All,

First to the good people at elecraft,
congratulations on shipping the K3s.

Second:

This may have been presented to the forum before but
I have not seen it.

Be careful with exposing your K2 to strong magnetic
fields, especially ones from power transformers.

I just finishing restoring an old Heathkit SB220
linear and in setting up the station placed the
linear to the left of the K2.

When I was using the linear I started to notice some
strange distortion in the received audio from the K2
and other stations commented on distortion on my
audio.

On CW all the received signals seem to have a
strange AC ripple on them. It was a very small
amount but still there. Stations receiving me also
reported a slight amount of ripple on my signal.

All this is while the linear was on but not
necessarily being used (I installed a Standby switch
in the SB220).

With the linear powered down, everything was
perfectly normal, both on received and transmitted
signals.

The power transformers in the SB220 are on the
linear's right side. This was the side the K2 was
located near.

I rearranged the station to have an antenna coupler
between the K2 and the SB220 linear, a spacing of
about 10 inches, and that totally solved the AC
ripple problem both on transmit and receive with the
linear powered up and on-line.

Just thought I would pass this on to everyone.

[Elecraft] re: printing new manual

2007-10-10 Thread Don Rasmussen
Kudos to Elecraft for going the extra mile with the
operator’s manual.

I laser printed the K2 PDF manual which I first
scribbled construction notes and parts changes onto,
then checked off each step as it was performed, and at
times even soldered on the pages. The pristine
original manual was kept by the radio for reference
after the build.

Market standard these days is to throw a CDROM in the
box and the documents are rarely worth referring to.

Examples of good documentation that I've seen include
Ten Tec VI+, Yaesu FT890AT, and the original FT101E
service manual. Oh yeah K2!!!

My impression is that the printed documentation is
also often representative of the firmware in the
radio. If it's slapped together and incomplete...

As a reviewer of the draft Owners Manual, I've got to
tell you that you're in for a treat later today when
Wayne puts a revised version up on the Web site. Not
that any of the Elecraft Faithful will be surprised -
quality documentation has always been a high order
value at Elecraft. I think it's an important
differentiator. So many manufacturers of ham radio
equipment (or any kind of technology, for that matter)
seem to think that the manual is one of those Dumb
Things I Gotta Do. Their docs tend to be nothing but a
list of buttons, dials, connectors and commands and
(sort of) what they do.
The Elecraft docs also tell you how to use the product
and how it works. This one includes a lot of what tech
writers call task-oriented documentation that
explains the sequence of operations needed to achieve
a
real operational goal. There is a good Quick Start
section for the huge majority who neither want nor
need to read every last word. But do read those words
eventually. Even as an active field tester, I learned
several new tricks to make my K3 work better just by
reading the draft. Take particular note of the Theory
of Operation section which provides just the right
amount of detail for the ham who wants to know what's
inside the box. You're going to like it.

Re: [Elecraft] Comparison: K3 and SDR 5000A

2007-10-10 Thread Richard Smith

Lyle,

I don't believe you can get something for nothing. The sample-in/sample-out
may work at steady state, but if you use an FIR filter, it still takes a
number of samples and time to fill the filter pipeline, as well as empty it.
My DSP may be a bit rusty, but I believe that the edges of a CW signal (the
no-signal to signal transition and the signal to no-signal transition) still
takes time to propogate through the FIR filter, and appears as a signal
delayed in time at the output. What is it about the K3 architecture that
eliminates this latency? How many taps does the FIR filter have that is
used in the K3 for a 30 WPM QSK mode, and what is the sample rate of the A/D
in that mode?

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Comparison: K3 and SDR 5000A

As I understand it, latency is no longer an issue. Latency issues with
the early versions of PowerSDR and the SDR-1000 have been resolved. That
being said, signal processing latency is a fact of life for all digital
radios. We are talking microseconds,

I beg to differ.

Latency (delay) in a DSP-based radio (or SDR, if you prefer) is caused by
several things.

The one we can't get rid of is the filter delay. By making shorter
filters (fewer taps), we can reduce the delay through the filter, but at
the expense of filter performance. We get wider skirts, less ultimate
rejection, more passband ripple, or some combination of these three
factors.

This is 22 ms more delay, or latency,
than a K3 will have, assuming similar delays in each radio for the
filter(s).

For a real world example, I connected an SDR-14 receiver (with associated
dual core 3 GHz PC) to the IF output of my K3. I then tuned in an SSB
signal and listened to it through the K3's speaker as well as demodulating
it and listening through the PC's audio system.

The audio coming from the PC was very noticeably delayed versus the audio
from the K3.

This delay or latency may not be an issue in all cases. But in come
common operational scenarios, like QSK CW or SSB using syllabic VOX, it
can be critical. By paying close attention to such latency issues in the
architecture of the K3, we are able to provide QSK CW operation at speeds
well over 30 WPM without reducing the taps in the filters or otherwise
compromising the performance of the radio. The 22 ms additional delay
cited in the example above would kill QSK performance.

Latency is just one of many considerations that arise when comparing
radios, architectures, and one's own needs and preferences.

73,

Lyle KK7P

Exactly. As I stated, you can't get away from the delay in the filter.
I was describing *additional* delay beyond that of the filter.

If the system is sampling at 48 kHz, a sample-by-sample architecture
will have 20.8 *micro*seconds delay before the subsequent filters, etc.,
see the signal.

If it is block based, and the block size is 1024 samples, then at the
same 48 kHz sample rate you'd have 22 *milli*seconds of delay before the
subsequent filters, etc., see the signal.

Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.

Enjoy!

2007-10-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Bill,

Those symptoms sound familiar. I believe your KPA100 is oscillating at
about 600 kHz.

During the KPA100UPKT installation, did you change C31? There is an
omission in the kit contents and the instructions right now which is
trying to be corrected, but has not yet been completed.

If you did not change C31 to a 0.22 uf capacitor, send a note to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and ask for one - the part number is E530295.

Installation of the larger value for C31 will stop an oscillation at
about 600 kHz (what frequency does the LP100 say is being transmitted).
Note for others following this thread - the C31 change is *only* to be
installed if the KPA100UPKT has been installed.

What's wrong with doing it that way? There must be something wrong with it,

because nobody in the ham world is doing it. Would most hams not like such a

 manual scheme? I sure would.

In my work, things like standard plans, timetables and rule books are often
done that way.

When you have a big book that is frequently revised, and is in the hands of
many people, it makes sense, because the cost of sending everyone a complete
new book is much more than the cost of keeping page-by-page revision info.

The big downside is that there must be absolute discipline in keeping the
books up to-date. An old timetable can be worse than none at all.

But in the amateur radio market, the revisions are few and the numbers small.
Keeping track of updates is a lot of administrative work.

It seems to me that having the manuals and revisions on the website is the
best way to go. That way, anyone can see them.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Manual Question

2007-10-10 Thread Bill W5WVO

Craig, we're really not that far apart here.

It's prohibitively expensive and adds significant complications for
the manufacturer, who has to maintain revision information per-page.

Maintaining revision information for updated pages is trivial. Adobe
FrameMaker makes this easy even without using XML tags. I won't bore everyone
with inside-baseball details here, but believe me, it's a no-brainer, takes
almost no time, and costs nothing extra. The tools are there. (No, not MS
Word. Anybody who is still trying to use MS Word for large, evolving sets of
complex technical documents either isn't really serious about technical
documentation to begin with, or is, um, alarmingly underinformed. :-)

The solution of offering a downloadable PDF of the manual is simpler
for the manufacturer . . . Users could print the manual if they
wanted, but otherwise I wouldn't have killed as many trees, Al Gore
would be happy, and we'd save $10/unit sold over distributing a
seldom-read manual.

I agree! It does cost less not to publish paper manuals. As a tech writer for
a major Silicon Valley semiconductor company, I put out thousands of pages of
PDF documents a year that are never printed on paper. What I'm saying is not
that manuals necessarily have to be printed on paper by the manufacturer, but
rather that adopting a different documentation paradigm (a) would cost no
more than the current process, and (b) might well be more attractive to many
end users than the current process.

I'm suggesting that it makes sense to structure ham radio manuals more like
military radio manuals, and adopt a similar upgrading scheme. Whether you do
this on paper, on a CD-ROM, as downloadable files, or as a combination of all
of these doesn't really matter. Documentation downloads from the website and
CD-ROMs shipped with the radio would be free, but CD-ROMs ordered separately
from the radio would be charged for, as would any paper documentation (whole
manuals and updates) printed and shipped by the manufacturer. It could be
preprinted and inventoried or, since it doesn't have to be bound, produced
in-house as ordered. The saved cost of binding could be used to cover the
additional cost of edge-reinforced punched stock, if desired.

Most end users who want a paper manual would choose the option of printing it
themselves on ordinary printer paper. If the manuals and updates were designed
as I described in my previous post, they would lend themselves exceptionally
well to home printing and loose-leaf binding. The user wouldn't have to print
out a whole new manual every time there's an update. Those who care to could
keep their manuals up-to-date elegantly and with a minimum of fuss; those who
don't care to would never be bothered.

Installation of the larger value for C31 will stop an oscillation at

Very little to date has been said about the K3 and MARS. (I checked the

1) When will this be implemented?

2) Will I need the KBPF3 module for MARS work or are the frequencies close

I have been quiet on the list about the K3 until now, but I am considering

Thanks, Bob, on behalf of all of the authors and reviewers.

We'll be diligently updating the manuals to keep them as accurate as
possible. In some cases the owner's manual is actually a bit ahead of
released firmware -- this is noted in the owner's manual errata.

The Schematics package is in lieu of the Service Manual, which isn't
complete yet. Meanwhile, the owner's manual has a troubleshooting
section that should cover most issues anyone would encounter.

Question. Can you put EQ set ups in memory for both TX EQ and RX EQ?

The reason that I ask that...is that when we multi-op...different strokes

[Elecraft] K3 Unanswered Questons

1. What step sizes are available for:

DSP BW (50?)
PBT
CW Pitch

2. What is the range of AGC SLP? Wasn't
there some discussion of a mode emulating
the K2 AGC (i.e. piecewise linear approximation)?

3. What is the range of the Context filter? Is
the 20 dB attenuation adjustable?

I realize most of these could
be answered if I had my K3 in front of me but
maybe someone who does can help.

All of these are presently 50 Hz. There was talk of making finer steps
available; they might do it in the future.

2. What is the range of AGC SLP? Wasn't

The range is 0-15. 15 is very flat; 0 reduces AGC action. I think I like
to use a lowish value in everyday operation, but I increase it in a
contest. I used 10 for the CQP.

3. What is the range of the Context filter? Is
the 20 dB attenuation adjustable?

It's presently not adjustable. It's a work in progress; I know Wayne
will be improving it.

Same.

The parameter range is 0-15, which translates to (qualitatively) not

Not at present.

We'll increase the range of these and other settings as time permits,

Re: [Elecraft] Comparison: K3 and SDR 5000A

2007-10-10 Thread Richard Smith

... The sample-in/sample-out may work at steady state, but if you use an
FIR filter, it still takes a number of samples and time to fill the
filter pipeline, as well as empty it...

Exactly. As I stated, you can't get away from the delay in the filter. I
was describing *additional* delay beyond that of the filter.

But the architectures are different, and can't be compared in that way. In
each case, the sytstem requres delay to capture the data. In the case of
the 5000A, once the data is collected, then the filter (which is an FFT)
is free to run all its calculations at the full bore speed of the processor
unconstrained by the sampling rate. In the K3, the filter is a serially
stepping FIR filter very much constrained in its calculation speed by the
sampling rate so must wait between samples for the next input point to
arrive before it can pop out a new output point calculation. In the 5000A
the main delay is up in front of the filter, as you point out, but in the K3
the main delay is in the filter itself caused by the need to push all that
data through the FIR filter at the sample input rate.

If the system is sampling at 48 kHz, a sample-by-sample architecture will
have 20.8 *micro*seconds delay before the subsequent filters, etc., see
the signal.

Correct, but it will also take 10.6 *milli* seconds to push that data
through a 512 tap FIR filter to detect the edge of a CW signal.

If it is block based, and the block size is 1024 samples, then at the same
48 kHz sample rate you'd have 22 *milli*seconds of delay before the
subsequent filters, etc., see the signal.

Actually a more realistic sample rate for the 5000A is 192 kHz. At that
rate, you have 5.3 milliseconds of delay, not 22.

Looks like we are in the same ballpark after all.

Enjoy!

I am. Thanks for exercising my grey matter.

Rich W1EZ

Re: [Elecraft] K2: Can the KPA100 and KAT100 Live in the same EC2 box?

2007-10-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Kevin,

The KAT100-2 has all the 'hooks' to mount the KPA100 in the same EC-2
enclosure.
If you already have a KAT100-1, there is a conversion kit to add the
missing pieces, but you will have to order the EC2 enclosure
separately. This is a 'no holes' solution.

Hi Guys,

I have got my K2 on the air, but in these days of low propagation,
maybe my signal needs a little extra punch. So my question is, will a
KPA100 and a KAT100 live in the same EC2 box without requiring me to
make additional holes in panels?

[Elecraft] k3 external freq ref

2007-10-10 Thread stephen pearce
It is not clear to me from the schematic or the owner manual whether
this is for a 10 MHz or 49 MHz input signal .. the faq indicates
that it is 10 Mhz (and presumably converted up to
49 MHz ) but on cursory perusal of the documentation I cannot see how
this is done.

I was hoping to use a gps disciplined xo with a 10 Mhz output as the
external reference ...

RE: [Elecraft] k3 external freq ref

2007-10-10 Thread AB7R
Stephen,

This option will be for use with a 10 MHz reference as you suggest. I'm
sure many who do this will use a GPS as you plan to.

On p.31, the K3 manual says that the CW abbreviation ES isn't used in

Why not recognize it in CW-to-Data and send an ampersand?

We'll put this on the wish list, Leigh. Good idea.
