your Microham USB Device Router is running very well under Parallels.
The Host OS is Mac OS X 10.4.x, the Guest OS is Windows XP.
I am using this combo almost daily with a Microham CW Keyer.

I am ordering a Microkeyer II next week, so i can test all Router

[Elecraft] K2/100 For Sale

2007-11-09 Thread Brent Sutphin
I have my K2/100 for sale. The K2 serial number is 5439. It has the
following options included.

KPA100 one hundred watt PA

KAT100-1 one hundred watt automatic antenna tuner

KSB2 SSB option

Kenwood MC 43 microphone

K160RX 160 meters with receive antenna

KNB2 noise blanker

supply and antenna. Everything else is included. The radio includes the
power cord, all cabling and manuals. The radio is in excellent condition
with no scratches, dents or dings and works perfectly. I have built many
Elecraft kits over the years and the workmanship on this radio is great.
Over $1500 invested in the K2 and options. I will ship insured anywhere in
continental USA for $1250. If interested please contact me via e-mail at

[Elecraft] [K2] Remote control programs

2007-11-09 Thread Art Horne
Greetings,

I’ve been looking for a remote control program for my K2. I’m trying to
decide between “TRX Manager” and “Ham Station Ultra” by Call Sign Software.
I’ve played with the TRX manager with their demo version but there is no
demo version of “Ham Station Ultra”. Does anyone here have any opinion on
these? Either pro or con comments would be welcome. How well does their
tech support work, any operational problems? I am not interests in any
digital modes so that area is of no concern. Any inputs would be greatly
appreciated.

that HRD is great just because it's free. I believe that the range and
quality of software available to hams is limited because of their
reluctance to pay for it, and that we are ultimately the poorer for it

I have written numerous programs for this hobby that I give away for
free on my website, but these are fairly simple programs I wrote for
my own use that I'm happy to share as-is. I'm not interested in making
them my life's work and constantly updating them, so I give them away
so as not to enter into a moral obligation to provide value for money
with them. Programming is hard and not very interesting work and the
thing that keeps most people doing it for reasons other than their
personal needs is that it is what earns them their bread and butter.

The HRD users are very fortunate that Simon is willing to keep on
developing his product for year after year, for no money, spending
time he could otherwise be spending on the air. But he is a bit of a
noble exception. We are all the poorer if we discourage professional
software developers from catering for our needs. It's not as if we
can't afford to pay for software - even the most expensive program
costs about the same as a fairly simple shack accessory.

Sorry for the rant, but it's something I feel very strongly about.

First, I'm a professional programmer.

I've paid good money for some ham (and other) software, and it has
turned out to be junk. Much ham software is written by hams who are not
professional programmers, and it shows.

There is a big difference in writing a program that is useful to you,
and one that will work properly in multiple environments, has a polished
interface, a balanced feature set, etc.

Unfortunately, even if hams were more willing to pay for software, the
market is small. The cost of professional programming is high, so that
means that the per-unit cost of good ham software would need to be quite
high for the publisher to make a profit. Do you want to pay $500 for a
rig control program? I didn't think so.

That's why we shouldn't expect to find much good ham software for sale.
On the other hand, there is the author of HRD who is willing to provide
a world-class program as a labor of love. We are very lucky. There are a
few others that have decent shareware or low-cost programs. But they are
not going to make a living that way.

Another approach that works is the open-source model, which has given us
the N1MM contest logging program. A little clunky, written in VB, it's
nevertheless one of the best programs of its genre. And it is free too.

[Elecraft] MicroHAM winkeyer help

2007-11-09 Thread Andreas Hofmann
Hi,
I am trying to wire up a microkeyer 2 and the winkey connection does not work.
If I set the K2 to INP HAND then it keys just one lone dah for the whole
transmission. I think that's how it should be configured though. In the display
of the MK it tells me the correct text, so I am assuming it sends the correct
text (but I cannot confirm). If I set the K2 to INP LPDLr then it just gives
me a long line of dits for the duration of the text.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I see the External keying auto-detect in
the manual, but it states it is not really needed as long as I change the menu,
correct?

Thanks and 73,

Yes, plenty of hams who managed to knock something up in VB think it
will make them the next Bill Gates. But that doesn't invalidate the
principle that we should be more willing to pay for software.

I doubt that it would cost that much. I paid $50 for MixW and judging
by the number of copies in use, they must have made quite a lot out of
it. But there is nothing else anywhere near it in functionality.

Another approach that works is the open-source model, which has given us

Yes, but open source often means a very slow pace of development. I'm
writing my soon to be K3 control program in Lazarus, an open source
clone of Delphi. I first came across it in the late 1990s and it has
only just got to the point of being really usable.

I accept the point, though, that paying for software is no guarantee
of getting what you want. I'd happily have paid for updates to MixW,
especially to get better K2 and K3 support (such as support for KY
command keying.) But I'm probably in the minority.

When you think about how many hours it takes to write and maintain a
program like that and how much a professional programmer makes, then you
realize that if they are selling it for $50 they better not quit their

At the least I will find out what constitutes a lot

2007-11-09 Thread w6jd
I was the guy with the pocket knife...I probably shouldn't have
bothered to say anything but it was an easy, non-destructive,
solution to an annoying little problem. I would defy anyone to
notice any damage to the front panel.

Any problems I've had have been cockpit error for the most part.
I violated the Golden Rule of assembling/operating a new piece of
gear, to wit, READ THE MANUAL(S)!!! The manuals are your
friend...they are there to HELP you!

I've had mine up and running now for several days, having lots
of fun on 20 cw at the 10 watt level. Now I need to tear myself
away from operating and get the KPA3 installed. I've worked
a number of EU stations, and to a man (or perhaps a woman)
they are interested in the K3. With the decline of the dollar I
would expect to see lots of orders from across the pond.

The receiver is everything I had expected...sensitivity and selectivity
are exceptional and the DSP is absolutely the best I've ever used.
Virtually no artifacts and the combination hardware/DSP noise
blanker takes care of all my noise problems.

All of this is subjective but I plan to haul it in to my former employer's
lab to get some real numbers.

It's worth the wait!

RE: [Elecraft] MicroHAM winkeyer help

2007-11-09 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I am trying to wire up a microkeyer 2 and the winkey
connection does not work. If I set the K2 to INP HAND then
it keys just one lone dah for the whole transmission.

As answered on the microHAM list:

With the K2 you will need to set the CW PTT in Router to QSK.
The K2 ties PTT and the dit input (tip of the CW jack) together.
When setting K2 to INP HAND this effectively makes PTT and CW
the same.

The short solution is to use INP HAND and set microKEYER II
(in Router) for QSK (no PTT) in CW. If you want PTT operation,
you will need to modify the K2 to provide a separate CW PTT
input. See W3FPR's modification at:
   http://www.qsl.net/w3fpr/ptt_input_for_the_elecraft_k2.htm

If I set the K2 to INP LPDLr then it just gives me a long line
of dits for the duration of the text.

Correct, with microKEYER II asserting PTT, the dot paddle is
closed for the duration of the text G.

 Hi,
I am trying to wire up a microkeyer 2 and the winkey
connection does not work. If I set the K2 to INP HAND then
it keys just one lone dah for the whole transmission. I think
that's how it should be configured though. In the display of
the MK it tells me the correct text, so I am assuming it
sends the correct text (but I cannot confirm). If I set the
K2 to INP LPDLr then it just gives me a long line of dits for
 the duration of the text.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I see the External keying
auto-detect in the manual, but it states it is not really
needed as long as I change the menu, correct?

If you're still shipping only kits, then knowing the order date
doesn't tell folks waiting for a factory built K3 muchsince we
don't know how many kits were ordered and/or how many have been shipped.

experience is the fastest way to build CW confidence and skill.

Hi Ron,

Last weekend I had an hour or so to operate in the Sweepstakes. After
having been licensed about a year, and on the air for nine months, the
2006 Sweepstakes was my first ever contest: talk about jumping into the
deep end of the pool! (I ended up getting massacred with five QSOs for
zero points; I had mis-copied something in every QSO.)

Anyway, this Sweepstakes I was starting to get the hang of it. My
comfortable ragchew copying speed is about 15-18 wpm, and my contest speed
is as high as 30 wpm for a simple exchange, or about 22-25 wpm under
Sweepstakes conditions.

Someone had given me a Morse decoder based on IK3OIL's design, which has a
NE567 decoding the tones and a PIC translating the Morse. Usually it
doesn't work very well, because a crash of static will be interpreted as a
dit. But when I was working some of the loud stations last weekend with
the RF gain of my K2 turned way down, I noticed that my decoder box was
working perfectly!

Well my new-found toy became a crutch very quickly. I soon found myself
not even listening, and instead watching the text scroll by. I switched
it off after ten minutes, and was much happier.

My opinion is that a Morse decoder does more harm than good for a
learner. Maybe it might be helpful for those first few terrifying QSOs
(which are still quite vivid in my memory), but I think that the learner
would be far better off learning to trust his or her own decoding
apparatus.

[Elecraft] FS: K1 plus options

2007-11-09 Thread Randy Moore

This K1 is serial number 2152, built by me. Configuration is:
K1 - 5w, 4-band CW QRP tranceiver;
Bands: 40m, 30m, 20m, 15m;
KAT1 antenna tuner;
LCB backlight;
KTS1 Wide Range Tilt Stand

I've never used it outside my shack and it is in like new condition,
both operationally and cosmetically. I also have the tiny CUP36-12-1
switching power supply that delivers 13.5v at 2.4a (see
http://www.mtechnologies.com/cup/ for details). I never constructed an
independent power cord for the K1, since I only use the CUP supply. I
have all documentation for the items listed (although you can also
download them from the Elecraft website). Asking $400 plus shipping in
CONUS. Prefer PayPal.

I'm selling this because I just never use it. Prefer my K2! And this
will be part of what I need for a K3 sometime in the hopefully near future!

the best part in keeping with the Amateur Spirit...it's Free.

I'm not picking on you Gregg, because I've heard this statement many times.
I just don't understand it.

Is this a veiled condemnation of companies like Elecraft (and TenTec, MFJ,
StepIR, Kenwood, HyGain, Yaesu, Gordon West, HRO, etc. etc. etc.) who charge
money for amateur radio products? Is Elecraft not in sync with the Amateur
Spirit? And if not, then wouldn't one have to admit that the Amateur
Spirit really doesn't have anything to do with whether or not one charges
for one's product?

I agree that we all have mentors in this hobby and it would be weird if they
charged us for their advice or helping us put up an antenna. But I wouldn't
expect my mentor to pay my way to Dayton, or buy me a rig, or pay for my
vanity callsign. I think the former is just part of normal human
friendships; the latter would be strange.

So I don't think that doing something for free is a defining characteristic
of the Amateur Spirit.

If anything the Amateur Spirit is about experimentation, building your own
equipment, and serving your community's emergency communications needs. If
you write your own K2 control program or your own logging software, then
that's in keeping with the Amateur Spirit. Whether you keep it for yourself,
give it away, or sell it is irrelevant.

Where I find some kind of recording device to be invaluable is when I make a
typo keying in the exchange to my logging program. If I correct the typo
right when I make it I will miss the rest of the exchange, so I just keep
typing. But by the end of the exchange, half the time I've forgotten what
the mistake was! This is why I keep a tape recorder running during contests,
but a decoder might be a great solution as well. It'll be fun to try it. I
used to just listen through the next QSO, but that has drawbacks apart from
taking more time. Sometimes there IS no next QSO, and multi-multi stations
don't always give out consecutive serial numbers so if you lose that, your
QSO is in doubt no matter what you do.

There was a thread a few days ago on copying contest exchanges that would be
quite good reading if you missed it. It describes exactly what I went
through on my first couple Field Days when the experienced CW ops went home
to bed and I was left by myself staring at a radio, a key, and a log
sheet...

2007-11-09 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Tnx Rob!

He sent me this e-mail privately and I encouraged him to post it here since
my comments were made with zero experience with such devices in learning the
code. Back in 1950 a few enterprising folks had devised relatively simple
tape inkers that printed dots and dashes on a strip of paper. That was
about it, and they didn't work well even of one could afford to buy or build
one. It wasn't until I could actually recognize and write the characters
that I first decoded what those Morse signals were saying, not just Hams but
the shortwaves were filled with them back then.

It's easy to make a tool become a crutch. I am genuinely pleased with his
observations.

I'm reminded of learning to fly back in 1956. After about 10 hours of flight
time with an instructor sitting behind me, his hands ready to touch the
tandem controls of the little Aeronca 7AC (like a Piper cub) if I needed
help, I was feeling pretty good about my ability to get us off the ground,
make some turns and get back onto the ground again in one piece. Then came
the day he said, as we taxied down the strip ready to make another take-off
and landing, stop here. I did and he got out. I was sitting there with my
jaw hanging down to my knees. NO WAY was I ready to fly this thing without
him in the back seat.

All he said was, It's time you did this alone. Just remember she's a little
livelier without my weight in the back seat. Before I could reply he
latched the door and stepped back.

That is one of life's moments one never forgets. The run down the runway,
holding a little rudder to compensate for the engine torque, the takeoff,
yes, a little quicker than usual, the climb a little faster than usual,
turns through the pattern and then floating, hanging in the sky a bit more
than usual over the fence at the end of the runway without his weight,
before the landing are all lost in a maze of thousands of such landings over
the years, but that moment when it was me and the sky alone for the very
first time I'll never forget.

Those are lifetime memories, just like the first QSO on CW.

Forget the fear. It's natural and meaningless. Go after the experience and
embrace it.

Thank you Rob! He's another of many thousands of true Hams who will
patiently help you through those first CW QSO's. After all, the difference
between your first solo flight and your first CW QSO is that you can
*always* walk away from your first QSO! But don't be surprised if your legs
aren't just a little rubbery just the same!

experience is the fastest way to build CW confidence and skill.

Hi Ron,

Last weekend I had an hour or so to operate in the Sweepstakes. After
having been licensed about a year, and on the air for nine months, the 2006
Sweepstakes was my first ever contest: talk about jumping into the deep end
of the pool!  (I ended up getting massacred with five QSOs for zero points;
I had mis-copied something in every QSO.)

Usually it
doesn't work very well, because a crash of static will be interpreted as a
dit. But when I was working some of the loud stations last weekend with the
RF gain of my K2 turned way down, I noticed that my decoder box was working
perfectly!

Well my new-found toy became a crutch very quickly. I soon found myself not
even listening, and instead watching the text scroll by. I switched it off
after ten minutes, and was much happier.

My opinion is that a Morse decoder does more harm than good for a learner.
Maybe it might be helpful for those first few terrifying QSOs (which are
still quite vivid in my memory), but I think that the learner would be far
better off learning to trust his or her own decoding apparatus.

Hi Gang, any news on what elecraft will do to better the K3 on 6
meters to better its performance? I know it rocks on HF according to
specs. , but my main reason to purchase a K3 would be for vhf/uhf
work.. and casual hf work on 28.885 with the extra reciver to
coordinate 6 meter contacts. and I guess lots of 6 meter operators,
may concur.

Hi Ed,

You can correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't heard anybody who actually HAS
a K3 and who has actually USED it on 6M complain about ANYTHING. Since 99% of
the K3's magic happens at the IF frequencies, and this circuitry is the same
for all covered bands, the only thing that could possibly be different about
6M is the receiver's sensitivity / noise floor. 6M is a noisy band compared to
other VHF/UHF bands, and you would have to live smack in the middle of nowhere
to have so little manmade noise on this band (not to mention solar noise) that
you could actually hear your radio's front-end noise floor. In my location, it
isn't even close. If I turn the gain up on my receiver far enough to hear the
receiver's noise with the antenna disconnected, and then connect the antenna,
I practically blow out my eardrums. And in any event, if you were so lucky as
to be in such a noiseless QTH, you would simply add a really good low-noise,
minimal-gain external preamp into the receive antenna path, as described by
Wayne. And then you could quickly switch back and forth between these two
configurations as necessary.

The only thing that might be perceived as better would be to build in the
dedicated 6M preamp. But I know a lot of VHF/UHF guys would rather pick or
build their own preamp to suit their own unique receive circumstances anyway.

I'm going to be very interested in reports of new owners' experiences on 6M if
there is any strong sporadic-E during the January contest -- and if not, then
next June/July, which is a more realistic worst-case test of close-in dynamic
range anyway. And as far as weak-signal scatter and EME modes are concerned,
we could get reports of that at any time.
