Just curious... did you ever get this resolved?

I'm not certain yet. Since my original message, I have dropped my AGC voltage
to 3.98V, re-adjusted L34, and recalibrated the filters using the most recent
notes for using Spectograph, and recalibrated the S-meter.

When I connected the K2 to an external antenna on Saturday night, the K2
seemed to be hearing some stations in the DX window of 80m about as well my
Grundig Satellite 800 shortwave radio (which was just using its built-in
whip). The results are promising but I need more time to listen to stations
and compare to my shortwave receivers.

While turning the slug of L34 clockwise, the internal signal peaks. Turning it
a bit more and the noise to the right of the internal signal begins to drop.
About the time it drops the slug appears to bottom out. I am wonders if I may
need to change a cap around L34 to bring the point of best S/N ratio to
somewhere more in the middle of the slugs travel range.

I didn't get any response to whether 2.5V rms on TP1 when the rig is tuned to
80m is withing the expected range or not. For now, I will just have to assume
it is.

I still think I am getting more of a change in audio level between AGC on and
off than I should. To see if the 8V regulator output is causing the problem
may require replacing the regulator. I'm not yet sure what voltages/parts I
should check in the IF amp or AGC circuit to determine if there is a problem
with one of these circuits.

Now that the receiver seems to be performing a little better, I will move on
to the transmitter. I want to retest the amount of maximum RF I can get from
the radio on the various bands and see if the change in VCO output has made
any noticeable change. I will also be rewiring T1 and T3 as I don't think they
are wound as well as they could be. They could be the cause for the slightly
lower RF output (barely 10W) on 10m.

I would except I probably don't have the right resistor values. The Cheap 'N
Dirty signal tracing from N0SS hasn't turned up any noticeable change in
signal at any of the text points. I do have some crystal oscillator packages
which I could use with a pot on the output to do create a signal source.

The noise generator and 3-band signal generator Elecraft mini-modules are on
my Christmas wish list. I'm hoping to find one or both under the tree this
year. If not, I'll have to order them myself.

I can't tell much about your AGC threshold, but certainly 4.1 volts is too
high - set it no higher than 3.8 volts.

The Rev. G manual says to set it to 3.8 during the construction phase. The
Rev. C and G manuals both say to set it to 3.6V in the signal tracing section.
Messages on the mailing list suggest setting the AGC voltage as high as
possible as long as you can still get no noticeable change in audio between
AGC on and off. Since my 8V regulator is putting out 8.45V, I have decided to
use the experimental formula for setting the AGC voltage so I have set it to
3.98V for now.

Thanks for the response.

you wrote:
I have found a number of confusing issues with the DATA A filters. I

I turned these in and the "Line In" problem. Elecraft acknowledged
digital problems. Communication seems difficult on these issues. The
"Line In" got fixed but the rest are waiting for attention. The "CWT
kills digital TX" is the only new factoid.
In the lates release, it seems you can avoid the 1KHz Fc in DATA A by
using low/hi instead of center/width.
I don't have any problems with Data Mode A, except that Dual PB stops
all receive signals. The 1 KHz problem I see is on INPUT to the line in
in AFSK mode. It appears that the mode only accepts audio in at around 1
KHz.
On the laptop trigger mode, you might try setting VOX. With RTTY done
as AFSK, the duty cycle is 100% and I would think that VOX, if they
allow it, would work fine. I have heard incidental reports that VOX
works in PSK mode which has a 50% duty cycle for its idle tone, and
higher for data.
The problem is not in triggering, but in sending FSK RTTY mark and
space. FSK D mode seems to be the only mode that can use Dual PB. That
mode does not accept audio in. You must either send text with the KY
command, key morse code or connect a PC’s I/O line to the “FSK IN” line
on the K3’s AUX I/O connector. (If this signal originates from an RS232
port, it will require RS232-to-TTL level conversion.)

I was hoping that Simon would add keyboard RTTY in addition to keyboard
CW to DM780.

Re: [Elecraft] RE: K3 - should data via the RS232 cable work?

2007-12-16 Thread Robert Benedict

Simon

Fair enough. I'm trying to use your program to ease some on the
kinderkrankheiten of the K3 software. I've been trying to find a way to
use the Dual PB filter for RTTY. I have tried three approaches:

1. Mode: Data, Data Mode: A
You can transmit anywhere in the waterfall. Invoking Dual PB results in
no receive signal - waterfall goes blank.

2. Mode rev Data, Data Mode: AFSK
There is a strange Line In INPUT filter centered at 1000Hz. If you set
the PITCH to 915 in the K3 and your digital software, you can get a
signal out UNTIL you invoke Dual PB, then no RF out (although you have
receive!).

BTW - Both modes are fragile. If you leave CWT on from a previous CW
mode they also doesn't produce RF. I have seen very inconsistent results
which I think are due to unexpected interactions like this.

3. Data Mode: FSK
Dual PB works on receive and on send with KY command. Appears to be robust.

Since I use a laptop with my rig I have no parallel or RS232 port lines
to trigger FSK, hence my request for a RTTY keyboard capability as the
only way I see to use Dual PB.

As I understand it, the K3 is supplied with the latest version,
available at the time of packaging / shipping. But note that the
firmware is still in active development / maintenance, so you will
want to update it to get the latest bug fixes and enhancements. If
only to verify that you can do it, while you have the manual in front

Receiving double sideband AM with offset tuning has some

sometimes one does want to shift around the passband. Audio quality is
not so important in this case. Many times SSB is better, but sometimes not.

At any rate, I personally would prefer to see the bandwidth in terms of
RF bandwidth and not AF bandwidth.

RE: [Elecraft] New K3 F/W - MCU: V 1.49 DSP: V 1.46 NR Improved.AMadded

That's correct. AM is a double sideband mode and requires
equal bandwidth above and below the carrier. Thus with a
6 KHz filter, one would be limited to a 3 KHz (or slightly
more depending on the filter skirts) maximum audio frequency.

Receiving double sideband AM with offset tuning has some
unique audio equalization requirements since the low audio
frequencies are boosted by 6dB due to the partial remaining
sideband.

Lyle, it might be worth considering a higher high cut/wider
bandwidth for receive with offset tuning. If I recall, many
of the SW broadcasters are using a "compatible" modulation
that is essentially USB with a reduced (-6dB) carrier. In
fact, it might even be worth considering "compatible AM"
(VSB or SSB with reduced carrier) transmit - after all it's
only programming .

[Elecraft] Visions of sugar plums

2007-12-16 Thread Paul Huff
Here in Detroit we are in the middle of a snow storm that could bring up to
12 inches by the end of today so I am enjoying a slow morning with my coffee
and some time to daydream. Here is a thought for the Elecraft design
engineers - a KX1 with a redesigned case that includes a hard cover to
protect the controls and display during transportation. This hard cover
could then flip around and serve as a prop to provide a small tilt angle for
the rig during use. The KXPD1 paddle would probably need to be reworked to
accommodate a tilt but that shouldn't be too difficult. (I use a detached
paddle with my KX1.)

[Elecraft] K3 Firmware version at time of shipping.

2007-12-16 Thread Dave G4AON

Geoff

The firmware on mine was right up to date to the version released that
week. I would recommend you test and align your K3 with the version that
it comes with, then once it is fully working you can update it to the
latest version from the web.

Probably a daft question but am I right to assume that the version of
firmware supplied as part of a K3 kit purchased from Elecraft is the latest
released version existing at the time of shipping the kit, or is the kit
supplied with some early version of firmware which has to be updated as
part

of the K3's 'alignment'?

Re: [Elecraft] RE: K3 - should data via the RS232 cable work?

2007-12-16 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)

Hi Bob,

There would be some disadvantages to sending the RTTY / PSK via the KY
command, I honestly think that an external program such as DigiPan,
WinWarbler etc. would be a better option. Displaying the text decoded by K3
is another matter.

FWIW I don't really have time to add this now, I am trying to get some new
analogue SSTV code working before Christmas. If I can send and receive SSTV
then I know that January and most of February will be taken up with the
supporting software for SSTV such as picture archives, QSL card templates,
fancy drawing software and the like.

Maybe next year I'll have a better idea for getting the K3 to send RTTY /
PSK, but I'll need to be convinced :-)

The FSK data mode works with KY commands but not the PSK data mode. I
have used FSK with command macros in Ham Radio Deluxe.
The DM780 digital modes program, also from Simon Brown, now also supports
keyboard CW on the K3. Maybe with a little lobbying Simon will support
keyboard RTTY and PSK for the K3.
