Re: [Elecraft] K2
Set up the K2 SSB filters properly for SSB (see my website K2 dial calibration article at http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com) and use a high output microphone such as the Elecraft MH2 and you will find the K2 a pleasure to use on SSB. With an added mic preamp, even low output microphones such as the Heil HC-4 and HC-5 element microphones work great. The K2 does have one SSB shortcoming, and that is in the VOX - there is no anti-VOX, so VOX performance may be lacking a bit because of it. I use PTT for SSB almost exclusively and have no problems. The K2 does enjoy very good SSB carrier suppression, and can be a very good SSB transceiver if it is set up properly - unfortunately, many K2s are not set up properly and the 'bad press' is a result. The BFO/filter relationship is critical to the setup required - again see my website for optimum filter settings for SSB - the low frequency corner of the filter bandpass must be close to 300 Hz. 73, Don W3FPR DW Holtman wrote: Hello, I have a K1, which I like. Re: [Elecraft] K1...
Brett, The K1 4 band board has only 2 low pass filters, so for possible band pair combinations, the higher band must be lower than the 2nd harmonic of the lower band. That fact rules out an 80/40 meter combination. 80/60 may be possible, but the K1 does not do SSB, so that is not a good choice. You are left with 40/30 for the lower band pair, and 20/(17 or 15) for the upper band pair. If you must have 80 meters with the 4 band board, that may be possible with a modified board, but it would then be a 3 band board - 80 and 40/30 would be possible or 80 and 20/(17 or 15) would be a possibility. The better solution is to purchase a 2 band board - if the 4 band board is for 40/30 and 20/15, then a 2 band board for 80 and 17 meters would allow coverage of all bands 80 thru 15. A properly operating K2 does not have the problems you suggest - the tuning 'pops' are the result of an open RFC15, and it covers all bands. The K2 receiver is more sensitive than the K1, so you may want to reconsider your choice. The K1 tuning range is builder selectable. Capacitors are provided for an 80+ kHz range or a 150+ kHz range - take your pick. the tuning range is covered by a 10 turn pot, so the 80 kHz range gives you about 8 kHz per turn while the 150 kHz range provides about 15 kHz per turn of bandspread. Some users say the 150 kHz range is too 'touchy', while others have no problem with it. Of course, you may use intermediate capacitor values to change the range to anything that you prefer. You mentioned computer control - the K2 can be computer controlled with the addition of the KIO2 option, but I do not know of any computer control possibilities for the K1. 73, Don W3FPR Brett Gazdzinski wrote: While waiting for the bugs to be worked out of the K3, I ordered a K1 for 80 and 40 meters. My main reason for getting the K1 is so I can use it in the den to rx some cw for practice, without running off to the ham shack and ignoring my wife. Hi Eric, First, welcome to the list. You will certainly find a wealth of knowledge here. I have done exactly what you are asking and have loved this configuration. The only difference is that I put the KPA100 amp and KAT100 ATU in a separate EC2 enclosure. Lyle, KK7P has a very nice website dedicated to doing this project: http://www.kk7p.com/k2kpa100.html It is full of pictures and very well documented and covers putting just the KPA100 in an EC2 and the KPA100/KAT100 combination. [Elecraft] Measurements on K3 TX audio
I had a little time to spare today so looked at my K3 TX audio. Setup:- K3 LSB 80m. Power 10W into dummy load. Heil Pro Plus selected to the HC5 element. Front Panel mic input High. Tektronix 475 Oscilloscope with X10 probe connected to dummy load. I found it necessary to set CMP to at least 5 to enable the MIC control to have a moderate effect. Initially MIC control set to 20 giving the normal unprocessed RF signal display of the scope. Increasing the CMP control to 30 made some difference to the display indicating that compression was taking place, but not a lot. The monitored audio sounded slightly louder. Leaving CMP = 30, I increased the MIC from 20 to 60. The average signal of the waveform increased in line with the increase of MIC level, but beyond MIC =55 the background noise/ distortion became rather noticeable. The monitored audio sounded much louder. I set CMP = 5 and MIC = 20 and used an external Datong RF clipper set to the same peak signal level into the Front Panel mic input. The monitored audio was at least twice as loud as the best I could get from the internal DSP. Notes. Without the external clipper I found that a lift of +2dB @ 2.4kHz and +4dB @ 3.2kHz improved readability. With the external clipper the opposite was needed -2dB @ 2.4kHz and -4dB @3.2kHz. Using the panel metering to set up levels was a waste of time. The internal monitoring facility has artifacts which make accurate signal monitoring difficult. Conclusion. Out of the box the K3 produces transmit audio which sounds fantastic. I believe, however that for DX and contest working more work needs to be done on the TX audio DSP front. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-100 oscillation problem: fixed
For those who are interested, here is more info on what I did: see http://home.pacbell.net/johngreb/KI6WX.html I followed the "Splitting A K2/100..." instructions and added a resistor at the input of the KPA. I used a 300 Ohm 2W resistor leftover from the KPA upgrade kit :) I forgot to mention that I also covered the little slot in the KPA shield near the RF output jack. I used a small piece of sheet brass and soldered it to the two solder lugs that connect the shield to the RF output jack. I am not sure which of these two actually stopped the oscillation. I'm happy now, now I finally have "symmetric" SO2R on 40m :) Tor N4OGW -- Original message -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > After some more searching through various cures online, I think I have fixed > it. > I added a 300 ohm 2W resistor to the input, that seemed to stop the problem. > > Tor > N4OGW > ___ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. "I am wondering what the groups opinions are about the best end fed antenna lengths would be for taking my newly built KX1 mobile? " For 40, 30, and 20 meters, I use a 42-foot wire with a large nut on the end. The wire is thrown over a tree branch. A Pomona BNC-to-Bindng Posts adaptor is used. Three counterpoise wires cut to one quarter wave for each band (approx. 33', 23', and 16.5') are connected to the ground binding post. RE: [Elecraft] K3 waiting time??
Oooh, Andy, What a question. Little do you know, that very topic has caused untold strife and fighting on the list. I believe the answer to your question is "no", as in "no, nobody can predict how long it will be before your rig is delivered". The great folks at Elecraft excel at radio engineering but have been horribly wrong when it comes to predicting production delays. I ordered my rig in August. They said they'd ship in Dec. If I earned my living by working DX then of course I would want to use every tool going that would help me do it more effectively. But ham radio is a hobby. There isn't a lot of point to it in practical, surviving the real world terms. DXing is supposed to be hard. If you use technologies unrelated to radio to make it easier then it becomes an almost worthless activity. Basket weaving is another hobby. If you bought a machine to weave the baskets, would that make it a better hobby? - Julian, G4ILO K3 s/n: 222 K2 s/n: 392 G4ILO's Shack: www.g4ilo.com Zerobeat Ham Forums: www.zerobeat.net/smf -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/RE%3A-New-concept-tool-for-CW-dxing-tp15269987p15329483.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. QRO, beam antennas, better filtering are all part of radio, and therefore legitimate ways to improve your success at DXing. The problem with technology like this is that it takes all the skill and chance out of the hunt. All you have to do is click the mouse and start sending. It reduces the hobby to a pointless exercise. The DX Cluster was the start down this rocky road, but it still relies on someone spotting the DX the hard way, so it doesn't completely ruin the experience. I think this is a very important issue that affects the value of our hobby. 15 years or so ago people didn't have the internet, and international phone calls were expensive. The ability to talk with someone half way round the world was special and magical. These days, it isn't, and people may start to wonder why we bother using radio when we can use email, Skype or a cheap phone call. If people start using computer technology to spot what they need to work then the actual radio contact becomes little more than a formality. It devalues the worth of the radio communication considerably. This wouldn't matter so much if you could just choose not to use this technology, but people will still be claiming these huge scores having used it, and the rest will feel either they have to do so too or else give up the game entirely. A game isn't fun to play if people are cheating. - Julian, G4ILO K3 s/n: 222 K2 s/n: 392 G4ILO's Shack: www.g4ilo.com Zerobeat Ham Forums: www.zerobeat.net/smf -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/RE%3A-New-concept-tool-for-CW-dxing-tp15269987p15329251.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
