RE: [Elecraft] K3 and Quadra amp

2008-06-15 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Jerry,

How did you wire your interface?

Did you use "Band Data 1" (DIN8/262) or "Band Data 2" (DB15)
on the Quadra?

What are the symptoms ("No go")?

Remember, the pin numbering on "Band Data 1" (DIN8/262) is
different than the standard DIN8 - pin 6 on the standard
connector is pin 7 ("D") on the 262, pin 7 on the standard
is 8 (inhibit) on the 262, and pin 8 on the standard is 6
("C") on the 262

My Quadra is still in storage ... I have not hooked it up
yet but may cobble together a cable this week to try it.

The build went fine except for mounting the speaker. I think the supplied
fiber and toothed lock washers are too small in diameter for the width of
the speaker mounting slots. It's pretty difficult to keep them from slipping
through the slots, and then the screws go crooked..
I finally gave up and just used larger fiber washers.

I also updated the firmware, no problem. Used a straight serial connection

Here's an assembly hint... Use a magnetized screwdriver. It is much, much

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for June 15th & 16th, 2008

2008-06-15 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening!
It was a wonderful day in the Coast Range of Oregon. Temperature got all
the way into the low 70s. The only clouds I saw were out over the ocean. A
light wind kept the air moving through the house. I had a fire going very low
just to get the chill out of the place and Sam has cozied up to it. Keeping
the windows open with a fire means I get some smoke now and then but it was not
too bad. It got pretty warm in here toward the end of the second net but that
happens because I am working. As soon as I am done I walk outside and all is
well.
Conditions on twenty meters were loud to Northern California but did not
seem to work well to the east. There was QRN on both bands. I expect it on 40
meters but it got loud early on 20. There were three new operators on the nets
tonight. From reading their bios none is new to amateur radio. Compared to
last week we had fewer K3s active. But that was more due to conditions. Well,
except for Pete. He has to keep his remuda of Elecraft gear exercised or they
get anxious and out of sorts. He rotates through them regularly. He has not
been attacked by a rogue Elecraft rig in quite some time so I think it is a
wise procedure.

On to the lists =>

   On 14050 kHz at 2300z:
W6ZH - Pete - CA - K2 - 5138
WB3AAL - Ron - PA - K2 - 1392
W0RSR - Mike - CO - K2 - 5767
NO8V - John - MI - K3 - 820
N1AL - Al - CA - K3 - 847
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457 ** QNI #230 **
N7HTS - Gary - WY - K2 - ?
K6PJV - Dale - CA - K2 - 5345
NK6A - Don - CA - K2 - 1217

   On 7045 kHz at 0200z:
WA7CS - Carl - WA - K2 - 3777
N1AL - Al - CA - K3 - 847
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457
W0JFR - John - CO - K2 - 4507
NO8V - John - MI - K3 - 820
W0RSR - Mike - CO - K2 - 5767 QNI #65!!!
N0AR - Scott - MN - K2 - 4866
W6ZH - Pete - CA - K2 - 5138
K9ZTV - Kent - MO - K3 - 21
N5SM - Scott - TX - K2 - 6417
WC7S - Dale - WY - K2 - 4360 QNI #10!
K6PJV - Dale - CA - K2 - 5345

I know I missed one serial number due to conditions. I kept pushing buttons
and turning knobs and was able to drag out more information but missed the
serial number. Oh well, there is always next week; hopefully conditions will
be as good or better. Summer Fox hunting season is about to begin. Right
after Field Day it will start on twenty meters. It should be fun considering
twenty is better this year than it was last year. Good hunting all you hounds!
Foxes, good luck to you too :)
If there are any errors in the above lists please send me the corrections.
Now for me to dig into a new assembly language. Atmel makes some nice chips
with a RISC processor. The language is highly orthogonal so it should not take
too long to make my first LED blink. There are some good freeware C compilers
too so getting productive should not take too long. Learning a new language is
always exciting; getting an LED blink is more impressive than one might imagine
considering all the ways things can go wrong!
   Until next week stay well,
  73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)

Re: [Elecraft] Probelm with KPA-100

2008-06-15 Thread AJSOENKE
Although the KPA is installed and is responding to setup configs, there is
one area that is sometimes overlooked. The internal RF connection to the Main
board needs to be connected correctly, and the antenna needs to go to the KPA
SO239, not the Mainboard BNC.

[Elecraft] k3/navigator

2008-06-15 Thread Blachura

Need a little help in setting up my K3 with the navigator interface and mixw
or other softwares.
I have It sending cw without any problem. But I can't get it to send FSK.
When I send a cq it keys the rig and the interface but only get a steady
tone. No FSK. I can use the cat etc. Must have a setting wrong some where.
If anyone is using this setup with the K3, I sure could use a little help.

Is this intended behaviour or a bug?

When I am using coarse tuning mode with CWT enabled and hit the SPOT
button, the search algorithm goes haywire and the transceiver ends up
tuned 5-10 kHz or more off frequency. This is with firmware rev. 0196.

[Elecraft] Autoinfo 1

2008-06-15 Thread Stan Rife
I set Autoinfo to Auto1 and it did not seem to cause the K3 to send
out RS-232 data without being polled. My impression is that this is what
this option was supposed to do. I may be out in left field on this, and
if so someone bring me in out of the rain please. :-)

I am trying to get the K3 to send data out for the SteppIR antenna
to read without having HRD running. There are times when I would like to
just peruse the bands without wanting the software running, but have the
SteppIR track the frequency. Has anyone done this successfully?

[Elecraft] K3 SOLVED: no output on "line out"?

2008-06-15 Thread Franki ON5ZO
Solved thanks to Ed W0YK, who told me to see if the K3's FSK pitch matched
the MMTTY mark.

It didn't, now it does and all works fine (3 modes).

My K3 can listen so narrow compared to the TS-850... I think I'm going to
love this rig when it gets hot on HF, expecially on CW.

Sounds like the MMTTY tone pair does not match the K3 tone pair.

[Elecraft] Re: no output on "line out"?

2008-06-15 Thread Franki ON5ZO
OK K3 "connoisseurs", I've got some more information on my RTTY / line out
problem.

- K3 + line out = OK.
- microHAM hardware and software = OK.
- I tune to an RTTY transmission and have the K3 decode. The tuning aid
tells me I'm right on. I'm not using Dual PB and listen 300Hz wide on a
500Hz roofing filter. K3 decodes 100%.
- MMTTY does NOT show a trace and plays dead. Hence me believing the line
output was dead or the input of the MK2R+ was broken.

BUT when I drive the filter wider, say from 800Hz up MMTTY starts showing a
signal. And when I listen 4kHz wide, I see the spectrum.
HOWEVER what MMTTY shows me is 'skewed', as if MMTTY listens off frequency
while the K3 is dead on. I played with Dual PB but that doesn't help either.
I consulted the manual but I missed the golden clue?

Does anyone use K3 Line Out to drive MMTTY? And does this occur?

Regarding CONFIG AGC SLP, page 50 of the manual:

Higher values result in 'flatter' AGC (making signals at all
amplitudes closer in AF output level).

I use the highest value, 15.

[Elecraft] K3: Firmware Upgrades & AGC

2008-06-15 Thread Dave G4AON
Kent, you do not specifically need to save any parameters although the
update tool has that facility and it's always worth saving them as it
may avoid you re-calibrating the K3 at some stage. It is important to
tick the "always load DSP data tables" otherwise the DSP might get
itself in a mess. I've had to reload my firmware recently when the AGC
didn't seem to be working correctly, that might have been me playing
around with beta firmware and not paying attention, anyway a re-load
fixed the problem.

The CONFIG:AGC SLP does indeed alter the AGC slope, if you momentarily
press the button, the display provides help. 10 is the default
setting, HIGHER = FLATTER according to the help button.

One or other of the above may fix your problem, also check that AGC PLS
(AGC pulse) is "nor" otherwise pops and clicks from light switches and
similar pulses will shoot holes in your received signals.

Re: [Elecraft] K2: KAT2 Calibration Results, typical?

2008-06-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
Michael,

I don't believe your results are a lot out of line, but neither can I
say that they are normal.
The diodes used in the wattmeter can have a frequency dependency - that
will be true for both the KAT2 and the OHR WM-2. If the frequency
dependency of the KAT2 is opposite that if the OHR WM-2, that will make
a greater difference between the two and will make the discrepancies
look larger than they actually are. So the bottom line is that you have
several variables that could be investigated if you wish. I do not
believe you have anything really wrong, just that the wattmeter readings
for both the KAT2 and the WM-2 are not up to the level of laboratory
measurements - or at least I would not trust them for exact measurements.

If I need a measurement that I can really trust, I use known good
terminating resistors (dummy loads) and measure the RF Voltage across
the resistors with a calibrated oscilloscope and 10X probe - and if the
power level is higher, I use a 20 (or 30) dB coupler like the Elecraft
CP1 to reduce the RF voltage to a point where I can measure it
accurately. Keeping the setup to the basics reduces the number of
variables, but it does require more computation - it is often easier
just to read a meter, or adjust a tuner for minimum SWR without regard
for the precise value of that lowest point, and that is the difference
between operating conditions and lab measurements.

Your measurements indicate that either the KAT2 or the WM-2 are adequate
for operating and should do the job nicely, but they are not adequate
for lab measurements unless they are first calibrated at the frequency
of interest.

Me too, but I realized that the K3 draws somewhat more current than the

the rating of the rating of the 20-amp fuse in the K2/100 power cord.

[Elecraft] K2: KAT2 Calibration Results, typical?

2008-06-15 Thread M. Linden
Hi folks,

I've finally had time to recalibrate my K2's KAT2 automatic antenna
tuner module using 25 and 100 Ohm loads on 40m. Please take a look at
my results and let me know if this is typical or if you think I have a
problem.

25 Ω (2.0:1)50 Ω (1.0:1)100 Ω (2.0:1)
1900 kHz2.1:1 1.0:1 1.9:1
3700 kHz2.1:1 1.0:1 1.9:1
7150 kHz2.0:1 1.0:1 2.0:1
10125 kHz 1.9:1 1.0:1 2.0:1
14172 kHz 1.8:1 1.0:1 2.2:1
18110 kHz 1.6:1 1.0:1 2.3:1
21200 kHz 1.5:1 1.0:1 2.4:1
24900 kHz 1.4:1 1.1:1 2.5:1
28500 kHz 1.4:1 1.2:1 2.6:1

KAT2 - CALP (Watts) OHR WM-2 (Watts)
1900 kHz5.5 6.0
3700 kHz6.0 6.0
7150 kHz3.9 4.0
10125 kHz 5.2 5.0
14172 kHz 5.2 4.9
18110 kHz 5.5 5.0
21200 kHz 5.5 4.9
24900 kHz 5.0 4.3
28500 kHz 5.0 4.1

Given the VSWR numbers, I thought that performing the 25/100 Ohm
calibration on 20m or 30m might give me better overall results. To the
contrary, the overall results were much worse than performing the
calibration on 40m -- 40m seems to be the sweet spot for CALS.

Likewise, attempts to improve on the overall forward power
calibration (make 10m a bit better and 160m a bit worse) only yielded
results that were worse overall. As with CALS, 40m also seems to be the
sweet spot for CALP.

Note that my OHR WM-2 Wattmeter was calibrated with lab equipment at
40m. Also, my 25 Ohm and 100 Ohm loads were checked with my MFJ SWR
Analyzer.

  Any comments would be appreciated!

[Elecraft] Re: K3: no output on "line out"?

2008-06-15 Thread Franki ON5ZO

So my conclusion is: nothing comes out of the LINE OUT. I looked
through the manual but only found the LIN OUT level parameter which I
cranked up to the max but that doesn't fix it.

I was a bit too fast. I connected a set of PC speakers to the "line out" and
they let me hear everything. So it's not the line out circuit.
I was lead to "accuse" the K3 because the MK2R+ works fine on my other rig
in the SO2R setup. But now it seems it is the specific input on the microHAM
device so I will address them for help.

And yes: the labels on the microHAM cable seem indeed reversed for the K3,
but it doesn't solve my problem.

At least everything works fine in CW and keying my ACOM 1000 amp went all by
itself as well just by connecting the cable. I think the K3 is indeed a fine
rig - time will tell if it can make me forget the TS-850. If so I've got
another one to replace by a K3.
It makes a lot less noise in the headphones when RX on a dummy load, that's
my very first impression.

Are you assuming as I did that as you have the mic gain set, it should
be putting something out? Once you go into data mode, the mic gain
becomes a line gain and is totally separate. I still do not believe
this is made clear enough in the manual. Of course, it could just be me :)

Franki,

Check your connections. Some of the microHAM K3 cables have
the Line In/Line Out (PC In/PC Out) plugs mislabeled. The
3.5 mm plug with the 3.5 mm female jack (used for subreceiver

[Elecraft] K3: Peter Hart Review in July Radcom?

2008-06-15 Thread Dave G4AON
You made the right choice... Peter is slow off the mark, there are
reviews by ARRL, Rob Sherwood, DL6RAI/DK4YJ, G4ZFE and myself!

The K3 does what is says on the packet, according to my test gear. You
know as well as anyone what the K3 is like from a user point of view, it
has it's quirky side but is easy to use, and outperforms pretty much
everything else on receive and has outstanding audio on SSB transmit too!

Re: [Elecraft] [K1] Unusual ATU Problem

2008-06-15 Thread Don Wilhelm

Steve,

Yes, that certainly sounds like strange behavior. Your tuner and
antenna do work on 30 meters because your 4 band board works OK with
them, so they are not the likely cause of your failure.
I can guess that the 'light display/relay chatter' symptom is a result
of the resettable fuse creating an effective power off/on cycle.
If you can follow my thinking below, you should have several things to
check. It would be best if you do the checks in the order I have listed
if you can.
The power cycling brings up the next question of why the power draw
would be sufficiently great on 30 meters to cause that behavior - from
your description it is confined to 30 meters on the 2 band board. Check
the solder on the relays for possible solder bridges first.
If the soldering is OK, then I would first guess that the transmit
frequency may not be correct, and if the frequency is correct, then the
low pass filter for 30 meters could be at fault.
Do you have any way to determine the frequency out of the Pre-mixer
bandpass filter? A frequency counter would be great, but a receiver
that can tune to the vicinity of 15 MHz could do that check.
The Pre-Mixer output frequency should be around 15 MHz (the 18 or 18.1
MHz crystal minus the VFO frequency of approximately 3.0 MHz). - You can
do the exact math based on your exact VFO frequency.
If you do have a 15 MHz signal out of the pre-mixer bandpass, then check
the signal out of the RF Bandpass filter to be certain it is in the
vicinity of 10.1 MHz.

If the frequencies are OK, then check the Low Pass filter. The best
check is to sweep the low pass filter with an antenna analyzer - to do
that, set the board relays to 30 meters and remove the board from the K1
- terminate the low pass filter with a 51 ohm resistor temporarily
soldered between P3 pins 1 and 3 and solder (or otherwise connect) J2
pin 1 to the center conductor of the analyzer output and J2 pin 3 to the
'shield' of the analyzer. You should find a low SWR at frequencies
below 10.7 MHz but the SWR should increase rapidly above 12 MHz.
If the Low pass filter cutoff is not correct, check the toroids - an
extra turn will result in a cutoff frequency in the vicinity of 9.5
MHz. Recently I did find one 30/40 meter LP filter that was tuned too
low even though the number of turns was correct - due to a pair of cores
that were too high in permeability was my assumption, but removing one
turn from each toroid made the filter tune correctly.

Good luck with it.

However when I activate tune or key up with the 30m part of the board, strange things happen. The screen goes clear, the following lights show in sequence: Attn light fashes - green RIT - red RIT - some relay chatter - Attn light - Display resumes.

If a power meter is installed in line with the antenna feed, the same sequence
occurs and no power registers. It gets stranger...!

If I connect the K1 directly to a dummy load the ATU tunes up as normal. No
problem.

If I put a 1:1 or 2:1 balun in series with the antenna the problem occurs but
if I put a 4:1 balun in series it works just fine.

I have remelted every solder joint on the board and checked no components on the board are touching above or below.

Without the ATU the board provides 5W to the antenna on 30m easily.

If I pop back the 4-band board and ATU combination, 30m works via the tuner
with no problems at all.

I am bewildered and perplexed. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks Guys

[Elecraft] K3: no output on "line out"?

2008-06-15 Thread Franki ON5ZO

I am trying to get set up for RTTY with an MK2R+ and N1MMLogger / MMTTY.
It seems the line out is dead: I don't get a waterfall on the screen. When I
plug the cable from the other radio in the K3's slot on the MK2R+, I get a
signal. I tested the cable between rig and interface which seems OK.
So my conclusion is: nothing comes out of the LINE OUT. I looked through the
manual but only found the LIN OUT level parameter which I cranked up to the
max but that doesn't fix it.

Any ideas? Am I forgetting something?

Can someone please point me to the source?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Split Operations

G4ILO wrote:

That isn't necessary. As Lexa has correctly identified, I was thinking
of a firmware option that would do all the necessary actions for
auto-split with one push of the SPLIT button. That option to completely
change the behavior of the SPLIT button already exists in many
transceivers.

If you are using logging software that can send CAT commands it should
be possible to program it. You would just need to send the equivalent
of A>B,

A>B, VFO B UP 1KHz, SPLIT, I think.

Many logging programs can extract split data from Cluster spots, and set
up the two VFO frequencies accordingly. However, we're talking here
about the capabilities of the rig itself.

The major point is about compatibility with facilities that have been
available in some transceivers for many years. Those established models
have become built into high-performance stations, and together they have
come to define how a high-end transceiver is expected to behave. To
penetrate that segment of the market and displace some of those existing
rigs, the K3 needs to equal the best of all our existing expectations...
and then give us more.

This irony is that the K3 has already achieved the "more" part! But
there is still work to be done to improve compatibility with existing
expectations. These include both the front-panel interface with the
operator and the rear-panel interface with existing station hardware.

Some of these are refinements, so they can never claim absolute priority
over basic functional upgrades. However, they do need to be discussed
among potential users - and always with the clear understanding that "We
discuss; then Elecraft decides."

[Elecraft] [K3] how connect a Pactor modem to the K3?

2008-06-15 Thread Dave G4AON

Hello Werner

My favourite subject! There is currently an issue between the SCS Pactor
modems and the K3, basically the K3 has a TX DSP delay of around 12 mS
and the SCS modems appear to have no "post TX" PTT delay. I have been
conducting some experiments with Brendan, EI6IZ, on Amtor and have a
"work around" where you need to use the VOX as well as PTT in order to
avoid truncating the trailing edge of Amtor transmissions. The following
settings work for me using a K3 and SCS PTC-IIex modem, both on Amtor
and Pactor:

Line in/line out (line in is MONO - just use the tip of a stereo plug)
PTT rear panel phono socket

SCS Modem setting, TXD = 5, tone levels need to be higher than the
default as the line in is quite low sensitivity, suggest 500 mV from the
modem.

K3 settings, assign SYNC DT to one of the PF keys, this speeds up the
DSP processing by bypassing some of the code, shows an "-s" on the
display when enabled. USB, VOX delay 0.05, VOX enabled, AGC-F.

I am using Alpha Software version 2.2

Lyle (KK7P) sent me a later version of DSP firmware (1.78) which reduces
the DSP delay by 5 mS (was I guess around 17 mS)... The additional delay
had crept in by accident in recent firmware releases. I understand there
may be a variable "PTT off" delay in a later firmware release from
Elecraft, I have also been in touch with the SCS over the matter as it's
likely to be a problem with other DSP IF transceivers.

I can e-mail you off list with oscilloscope images of the various
delays, etc. Oddly enough I also have a Kantronics KAM Plus which has a
POStkey command which allows for up to 12 mS of post PTT delay! For what
it's worth the PK232 doesn't appear to have a similar command, so they
may have issues with the K3 too. If you want an Amtor or Pactor (II/III)
sked to test your set-up let me know.

2008-06-15 Thread Alexandr Kobranov

Maybe I do not understand correctly but why to define PF and macros etc ?
If (suggested) menu item AUTO SPLIT will be OFF all will be as today is.
If (suggested) menu item AUTO SPLIT will be let say 5 (or -3) then ANY
SPLIT activation will cause +5kHz (or -3kHz) offset between TX and RX.

(TX will be at VFO-B)
Yes, this is about comfort and speed only, there is several ways how
to set it today, this is not serious problem imho.

But maybe I missed something important and the problem and firmware
additional suggestion is more complicated :-(
(Possible in deep explanation pls directly to my mailI will be
happy to understand this more complex...)

BTW macro definition for PF button is also gret idea :-)
