[Elecraft] NB - DSP/IF
I've had my K3 for about a month now and the NR seems to work very well. However, I have had little luck with either the DSP or IF NB when I hear what sounds like electrical noise. There does not appear to be significant differences between any of the settings and I don't detect an appreciable differrence in audio (which I would at higher levels of DSP). Thoughts? RE: [Elecraft] Microphone ground
Lew, The Elecraft documentation shows the mic ground connected to pin 7, the PTT ground connected to pin 8 and both pins connected to chassis ground through a common RF choke. In some stations, the common RF choke results in common mode RF (also known as a "Pin 1 problem") feedback. The proper connection would be: mic return to pin 7, PTT ground (chassis) to the SHELL of the Foster plug and the SHIELD of the mic cable to the SHELL of the Foster plug. The mic cable SHIELD should NOT be connected to the MIC element (it should connect to the CASE or float). 73, ... RE: [Elecraft] [K3] FLx GN Adding Db gain
There is a table of "first guess" filter gain settings that Elecraft uses for factory-built units in the K3 Utility Help on the Crystal Filter configuration page. The 400 Hz 8-pole filter has 7 dB of gain in that table. After starting with these approximate values, you might measure the AF voltage at the speaker, perhaps with the alternate VFO B display function "AFV" described on page 36 of the owner's manual to display the AF voltage and set the filter gain settings so that the AF voltage stays relatively constant as you change bandwidth when tuned to a steady carrier (perhaps generated by a signal generator). You could also clip a voltmeter across the speaker leads. Some just do this aurally. Re: [Elecraft] Microphone ground
Lew, The mic cable shield should be connected to the shield of the mic plug, and in turn the mic jack shell should be connected directly to the enclosure by a very short path. Unfortunately, that does not happen in most ham gear constructed on PC Boards - it is easy to connect the shell to the board ground, but that is the wrong place, it really should connect directly to the metal enclosure for best RF prevention. See Jim Brown's (K9YC) frequent posts referencing 'the pin 1 problem'. The shield should not be used for any of the signal returns. Normally the PTT return connects to pin 7 and the AF return connects to pin 8. lew wrote: Does the Elecraft require a microphone ground as well as the usual ground for its microphone connector? Re: [Elecraft] K3- How Robust iis the Tuner?
Just for information, DX Engineering has a good page on their website (Choosing the correct balun). They recommend current type baluns, but different ratios for different antenna. I use a multi band dipole fed with ladder line. I use what they recommend for a multi band dipole. The antenna is cut for the lowest frequency to operate, and use a 1.1 Balun. The ladderline is 1/8 multiples of the lowest frequency to operate. I use the 450 ohm ladder line because it was on hand, 300 ohm is what's recommended. With this setup my Palstar tuner tunes easily, and the K3's tuner tunes easily as well when used alone with the antenna. I hope this of interest to the group. Re: [Elecraft] K3_ CW Sideband_ Sidetone
Ken, The K2 uses high-side LO injection for the bands 17m and below, but for 15m and above low-side LO injection is used. What that means is that the K2 'switches sidebands' at 15 meters and above. That is the reason that the recommended filter/BFO setup is done on one of the lower bands (40 meters is usually recommended), and the CW filters are set below the filter center and the CWrev filters are set higher than the filter center. The same goes for SSB - LSB is below the filter center while USB is above *except* for the 15, 12 and 10 meter bands where the sidebands are reversed. The firmware automatically corrects for the shift, but you can see it in a waterfall display. If you are using the RTTY filters, they are usually set with the sidebands like those for CW and SSB, but the normal mode of operation is with RTTYrev which will be the upper sideband set. 73, Don W3FPR Ken Roberson wrote: Hello All, My first time to ask fer help. RE: [Elecraft] K3- How Robust iis the Tuner?
I would think any danger would be to the external tuner or the coaxial link between the K3 and external tuner. The built in tuner (or any tuner) simply tries to find a match - compensate for any reactance and transform the remaining resistive impedance to 50 ohms. It doesn't matter why there's a mismatch. If it can find a match it's fine. Obviously, the KAT3 is rated to handle any impedance it can match at up to 100 watts, with a decent safety margin beyond that. If the impedance presented to the rear panel is too far off, it should not be able to find a match and you'll see that on the display, but that wasn't the case in your situation. What possibly happened, assuming you have coaxial line connected to the K3, is you melted the coax center insulator. That takes a lot of current or voltage, but a really high SWR can exceed the coax's ratings at significant power. Remember, the "match" you see on the K3 display only says that there's a 50 ohm non-reactive load on the final amplifier in the K3. It says nothing at all about the impedance (and so SWR) present at the antenna connector on the back of the K3. Usually what happens if you overheat the coax is that it shorts as the center conductor insulation melts and the center conductor touches the shield. If it didn't get hot enough long enough for that to happen, you'll not know about it and everything will be fine unless you check your SWR on the line. An easy way to do that is to check the SWR at your external tuner, adjust it to 1:1 and then see if the K3 agrees it's 1:1 with the KAT3 in bypass. If the coax was damaged enough to move the center conductor significantly, it will no longer be a 50-ohm cable. But it would take pretty extreme damage to show up that way unless you have a very long piece of coax running between the K3 and your external tuner. [Elecraft] Microphone ground
Good question .. others will answer it but I just had to comment thus... I have had serious rf pickup problems with all of my radios and several different kinds of microphones. The root problem is that I have ladderline coming right into the shack but I can't change that. Microphone cable shields ought to protect the front end of the audio chain in the radio but very often the microphone cable shield is *not* directly grounded to the chassis of the radio. There is a suggestion on the Heil website that one can often solve rf pickup problems in the microphone by making sure that the microphone cable shield is *directly* connected to the metal microphone connector. Heil makes the point that often the mic manufacturer connects the cable shield to one of the pins on the mic connector but leaves it to the radio manufacturer to connect that pin to the chassis of the radio. The radio manufacturer designer does connect this pin to the chassis but that involves an extra inch or two (or more) of wire in the ground circuit and, especially at higher frequencies, that can be enough to allow rf on the outside of the mic cable shield to couple to the wiring inside the shield. I had that problem in spades on 10M and 6M with my K3. I fixed it by connecting the mic shield within the mic connector directly to the metal connector shell which, of course, screws onto the mic connector on the radio which is bonded to the chassis. This improvement was suggested by Heil on their website. What kind of mic am I using? An Elecraft MH2 .. which, I think, is made by Heil. Go figure. I'll bet I am not the only one with rf-in-the-mic-circuit problems. So, I thought I should pass along my experience. Don K7FJ Does the Elecraft require a microphone ground as well as the usual ground for its microphone connector? If so, should it go to to pin 7 or 8 on the Elecraft mike connector? Re: [Elecraft] Thinking of selling my K2 wondering about value?
It is worth more than you will get for it in cash terms. When you sell it you may miss it and may have to build or buy another one. I am keeping mine! However, I believe $600 is the going rate for the basic K3, at least it is over here in Europe. Yours has many options so could easily be worth perhaps $1200. I work on the simple principle that new, second hand gear is worth at most around 2/3 of the current new price. But, K2s and K3s can exceed this. As it is the 100W model you might get more if you sell the KPA100 and KAT100 separately. The 10W K3 with the transverter interface is a popular driver for VHF and up and also is still a popular QRP radio, you would probably get nearly $800 for it and maybe $500-600 for the PA/ATU. I am not sure why you think the K2/100 is not a good mobile rig. It has everything necessary except a remote head unit. If it will not fit you might be better off getting a different vehicle, or sticking with the 706. Re: [Elecraft] AL-811H Amp and K3
David, I run the Al-811 (3 tubes otherwise the same as the 811H) with my K3 and interface is very easy. There is no need to use ALC just adjust the K3 power output so you are not overdriving the amp. With my setup that's around 60- 70 watts out. You just need a simple cable with RCA plugs as the keying line and you are good to go. [Fwd: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Split Release]
That's not what I meant! Not tap the *BSET* button; press/hold the *SPLIT* button to get it out of split. Obviously I wasn't awake when I sent the previous email. Sorry... 73, Ken K3IU Original Message Subject:Re: [Elecraft] K3 Split Release Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2008 04:17:26 -0400 From: Ken K3IU <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: elecraft@mailman.qth.net, Jim Denneny <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> References: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> On #202 with latest firmware, when I am in split mode and then turn on the SubRx , the K3 stays Split in all modes (cw, ssb, AM). I was up 5 calling. I switched on SUB to listen to the pileup. The next thing I knew SPLIT dropped out. I did not notice that and I was calling on the DX freq with the cops telling me UP UP UP. What an embarasment!! I have no idea how this could happen. SPLIT should only respond to the SPLIT button and not messing around with the SUB RX. [Elecraft] K3 audio distortion
Dear fellow Elecrafters, I think this topic has fallen into oblivion somehow. Have been using my MD-7506 for many years now with absolute satisfaction either for ham purposes or music. Not so in combination with K3! In fact the audio sounds terrible. I tried a cheap PC headphones with 32ohm (MDR-7506 have 64ohm) and they indeed sound much better. Could this be because of lower impedance, limited frequency response or both? Is there a solution for the poor guys with too good headphones? Re: [Elecraft] Re: KRX3 Subrx front panel issues - AuxDSP guilty!
Randy Hargenrader wrote: I think I found the problem. Looks like I had a screw head on the Aux DSP board bumping up against the main board. I have it running now - first without the hardware and then now with it some insulating patches of tape did the trick after confirming the hardware was bothering something. Seems to me that ALL the screws holding the AuxDSP to the standoffs should be the nylon ones sure would have made my life easier! Hi Randy, Are you *sure* you fitted the correct hardware (standoffs etc)? I have built 3 of these now and not had any issues with hardware etc. It is easy to get the wrong sized standoff or to miss fitting a washer. 73 Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC DX Cluster Member RSGB, GQRP K2 #4044 |K3 #455 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
