[Elecraft] UK Elecraft net report for Sunday 2nd November

2008-11-02 Thread Dave G4AON

We managed without too much continental QRM this week.

Topics were:
Memory (band switching) use with the latest firmware.
LP-100 power meters (several stations on the net are now using them)
IF shift when reducing bandwidth on SSB. Suggestion that the centre
frequency should be 1.35 KHz not 1.5 KHz...

Notch, manual vs. auto, K3 notch vs. Perseus notch.
Fitting PL259 plugs
Overall audio quality.
Circuit differences between the latest release of circuit diagrams and
the earlier ones (PA differences in particular)

K2 DSP settings.
Filter offset issues/problems when using the 2nd receiver.

Stations were:
M0GJH, Andrew
G0MJW, Mike
G0VGS, Ian
M1PAF, Paul
G4ARI, Tim
GM3SEK, Ian
GM0ELP, Doug
G4NWJ, Jim

73 until next week.

Re: Re[Elecraft] minder - UK Elecraft net Sundays 0900 local, 3630 KHz

2008-11-02 Thread Rod

Dave

Thanks for running the Net every Sunday.

I would like to propose a change of frequency for the net.

Down here on the south coast I am clobbered badly by continental QRM.

Can we try around 3.720Mhz, Normally it is much clearer of the continental
traffic.

Regards

Rod G3YHM

[Elecraft] UK Elecraft net - change of frequency?

2008-11-02 Thread Dave G4AON
Rod (G3YHM) posted a message proposing a change to 3720 KHz to reduce
continental QRM. Can I have the views of others as it makes no
difference to me what the frequency is.

The original frequency of 3630 KHz was chosen so that we might have been
able to run wider bandwidth modes such as AM and ESSB, both of which are
available with the K3 provided it is fitted with the 6 KHz IF filter.
There are so many stations on 80m between 0900 and 1000 on Sunday
mornings that running such wide bandwidth is not desirable. Operating,
or even testing, AM and ESSB higher in the band is not a good idea at
any time. Note there are daily AM nets running on 3615 and 3625 KHz.

Options to consider are:

1. Stay put and operate at the same time.
2. Stay on the same area of the band and start an hour later for
potentially less continental QRM.

3. Move higher in frequency at the same start time.
4. Move higher in frequency and start an hour later.

Can you e-mail me off the Reflector with your preferences and I'll see
how it pans out. Regular net members views will be considered before others.

[Elecraft] K2-100 Alignment & Installation problems

2008-11-02 Thread Ron McCurdy
Page 46 of the manual where I turn on the K2, I DO NOT see NO PA PS as
called for in the manual.

When I tap display my voltage has dropped to 11.3 volts. Measured at the
source it is still 13.5.

Measuring the voltage at Junction of C77 & R11 I get 74.1 volts which is not
in the range specified.

At J3+ lead I get -0.004 volts.

Page 47 adjusting C27 to move the 4Mhz oscillator frequency has no effect on
the oscillator.

When I place the K2 in Tune, the display only shows power and does not show
the SWR.

C1 has no effect on SWR.

Page 48 after connecting high current power supply the voltage readout at
Display is still 11.5 volts and voltage measured at source is 13.85.

I looked at the troubleshooting instructions and found nothing that would
help me with this "low voltage display" problem nor the low voltage at C77 &
R11.

Does anyone have any ideas???

This is new information that I don't even see in the K3 Prog Ref, which says
that the SM command is only provided for support of legacy (presumably
Kenwood) apps, and that new software should use the BG command.

I agree entirely with Mario and I don't understand what purpose this serves.
Given that the TX test function disables rf but allows keying of external
amps etc, it seems odd to allow the same thing to happen with TX norm and
VOX off.
Why did 90% of the focus group think this was useful?

RE: [Elecraft] So you want an analog s-meter for the K3?

2008-11-02 Thread David Fleming
The BG command does indeed truncate to S9 when CWT is selected. SM does not. I
chose BG because it reports during TX. I'll be switching to SM because the BG
data currently being reported during transmit is either SWR or CMP, depending
on the RF/ALC selection; although the programmer's reference says it reports RF
or ALC levels.. This may change.

Re: [Elecraft] Bigger K3 S-meter

2008-11-02 Thread David Cutter

Agreed

A calibrated S meter could be useful tool in many other ways.

- Measuring field strength and patterns of antennas.

- Reporting on things like BPL and other radiated and conducted
measurements that seem to be a daily threat on HF. Just knowing they close
to S9 plus plus minus 20 db is not a professional way to build an
argument against such pollution in professional circles. Having a
calibrated S meter and adding something a like calibrated loop with a
known antenna factor would make collecting and surveying potential RF
pollution data very easy. While we don't need 0.1 db accuracy 1 db of
accuracy is easily achieved in SDR radios.

http://www.vk1od.net/bpl/QueanbeyanBplTrial2.htm

- Using a good S-meter would also be a reliable way of surveying a
potential new QTH. The data could be used to compare signal noise levels
to the thermal noise floor, or even compare what you are measuring to the
surveyed ITU noise levels on HF. It would be nice knowing that your
potential new QTH is in a QRM silent location. It would also be good
comparing noise floors amongst hams for various locations.

- It would also be useful knowing how accurate and reliable propagation
programs are on a daily basis since they do predict signal levels. This
might come in handy if one wanted to build a DSP based DF system which
relies on ionospheric data.

- As a general level meter around the shack, it could even be used as an
accurate power meter.

So to me a well calibrated S-meter can take the place of many expensive
instruments that most hams dont have access to on a daily basis. It is a
very useful tool. When we use some sort of absolute reference our
understanding of what we are measuring on a daily basis increases our
understanding of what we are doing in our hobby.

While we on this subject if further work is carried out on the K3's
s-meter you might as well follow the IARU's recommendation for S-meters
and make it quasi peak in nature.

Besides these days, with the competition increasing in the new radio
market with radios like the Perseus, ADAT and the newly released cheap
Flexradio models, all which offer a very accurate S-meters as a feature.
It would do no harm to the K3's reputation having a feature that some
consider desirable, that's marketing not rocket science.

Yes. I lack the graphics skills to make the one in KComm look as nice, but
as both programs can be run together there is no need for me to anyway. If
you want a nice looking S meter use this one.

If you use the Virtual Serial Port Emulator which I already use so I can run
KComm and Fldigi simultaneously, then it should be possible to run it at the
same time as any other logging software (under Windows.) I have had KComm,
Fldigi and the S-meter all running at the same time.

You can get the Virtual Serial Port Emulator from

Not to discourage innovation, but I ran the program and as expected it did
only the meter on the radio already does.
I have spent too many years working with computers to think anything is neat
just because it is done on the computer.
Personally I will not use it, as I don't want to have to start a computer
program in order to use the radio, unless the computer brings something
really spectacular, such as panoramic reception, or digital modes. (While
the K3 can do digital modes internally, for my personal purposes I consider
it a useless gimmick, just like this software S-meter).

RE: [Elecraft] K3 max power out 63W?

2008-11-02 Thread Rob May

I was using the internal wattmeter in the K3. I don't have an external
wattmeter. I hooked the radio up to an oscilloscope today and the power maxes
out between the 60 and 70 watt setting. The scope is an old Tektronix 422 and
the absolute measurements probably aren't that accurate, but the relative
measurements should be valid. Here's what I get:
Setting Output
10 9
20 16
30 23
40 31
50 46
60 67
70 77
80 77
90 77
10077
11077
12077

The measurements are subject to interpolation of a fuzzy line on a small, old
crt on an old 15MHz scope, so I'm not as concerned about the actual numbers as
I am the fact that they level off after about 65 watts indicated on the power
setting. The measurements were take on the 160m band into a dummy load with
the ATU bypassed and an indicated SWR of 1.1-1. I'm thinking that one of the
finals in the KPA3 has failed.

How are you measuring your power output? Are you using an external
wattmeter? If not, you don't know if you have a power problem or a metering
problem.

Use an external wattmeter and report your findings. Also, is your
tuner in bypass?

I dont' know when it happened, but I can no longer get full power out
of my K3 (s/n 1417 FW 2.58 DSP 1.94). Using the tune control, power out
will not go above 63 watts. I can do the TXGN calibration at 5W and 50W
with no problem. But if I turn up the power, the output never goes above
63W, i.e. if I dial in 50, I get 50W, if I dial in 63, I get 63W, if I dial in
75, I get 63W, if I dial in 100 or 120, I get 63W. It used to work
ok. This is all into a dummy load with an indicated SWR of 1.1-1.
What could have happened? I've tried going back to FW 2.45, but the
problem still exists. Any help would be
appreciated.

I bit the bullet and removed L4 and L7 this morning.  It is not difficult;
they are both on the back of the front panel board. I jumpered the pads
with wire. I am now getting superb audio reports from critical local
stations that were guiding me in reducing RF on my audio. My MC-60 mic is
back in good graces.

It works.

Monty K2DLJ

Even in balanced audio systems, the same rules apply. Had the K3 been
designed with a truly balanced, 3-stage instrumentation input for its mic
pre-amp, the inclusion of L4 and L7 on the shielded return paths would
have the same effect. The saving grace in an instrumentation-input
circuit (or in the alternative, an audio transformer input) is the
inherently large common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) across a very broad
frequency span that limits the presence of RF on a twisted-pair audio
line, even in the total absence of the cable shielding. For nearly 100
years, the Bell System and its progeny have used unshielded twisted-pair
balanced audio systems in the presence of outrageously-high RF fields with
no measurable detriment to performance in many instances.

L4 on the front panel board is related to the issues some folks are
having when using the front panel mic connector with various audio

ground.

L7 on the KIO3 audio I/O board can also be bypassed for the same reasons
when using the rear panel mic jack in similar installations.

L7 on the front panel board is for reduction of noise from the RS232
serial port lines and should definitely not be bypassed!

[Elecraft] K3 Meter - MUCH improved

2008-11-02 Thread David Fleming

I've implemented a moving average algorithm that adds a tremendous amount of
realism to the meter. HUGE difference. Also converted to the SM; command to
avoid truncation with CWT enabled.

Big thanks to Joe Subich for his help with the moving average code.

David,

I'd suggest some averaging ... perhaps five or 10
sample
log weighted moving average ... and recommend converting
from BG; to SM; polling since the BG; scale is truncated
if CWT is selected in CW or data modes.

Re: [Elecraft] Using K3 with AMP

George,

What K3 jack are you connecting the amp to? You should be connecting to
the KEYOUT jack. If you have connected to the K3 PTT input instead, I
could understand that you might have difficulties like you describe.

Or to the "KEY" input next to it, it if was in CW mode...

For several years I keyed my Dentron Clipperton L amp from the jack on

the K3 I just received. I noticed that WITHOUT AC power to the amp
when I moved the standby switch to operate the K3 PTT was keyed and
the rig put out normal power. This is w/o the AMP being ON. Any
thoughts from anyone? I do have an AMPKEYER available to use between
the units but thought I could key the AMP directly. Why would my
STANDY/OPERATE switch on the amp operate as a PTT switch? Do I need
to set a parameter in the K3? Of course all equipment share a common
ground connection.

[Elecraft] SS... aka - More Fun

2008-11-02 Thread Dale Putnam

So.. with the temp outside in the 70s, and no wind... partly cloudy skies... it
was a nice day, to spend, at the radio.. trying to get a WAS and a sweep..
well... neither one was readily available... at least with the conditions as
they were. However, and here is the good part... I had my K2 set up with three
antennas, and with the bands open, but long, this morning at 2 and again at
2... local time, I ran, with all 5 watts screaming out the antenna, holding the
freq rather nicely, and when the crowding began... the rx stayed right with me,
and only when the run faded because the crowd, was where? All over me... I
found as I opened the rx back up. ON top and on both sides. So.. I figured this
was a good time to go try it again.. and I did... and again and again.. on
80, and on 40 then the true test... up on 20... down in the middle of KW
alley... here is the test that doesn't show on the bench... a rx that shows up
good on the bench is one thing.. altogether a different animal when it comes to
KW alley in the middle of SS... however... I found that actually putting the
pressure on the rx was a joy to watch and lisen to. No funny stuff, and the
constant pressure from the electric fence kept out by the nb, was also a joy.
No ill effects at all.
I knew the rx had nice specs.. proved it on the service bench. But putting it
into the fray at a full press, was fun.
How did it do? Well the op failed after about 18 hours... but it made over
300Qs and 72 Sections not a sweep, but popping through piles was a
breeze... and that is about 85% rx... and 15% antenna when they stack up that
deep.

No, didn't get WAS, missed it by ND, and DE... and a sweep was left out by a
handful of VEs missing. 6 maybe. anyway.. it was a blast,
Now, Thank you Elecraft... to put it the best way for the moment..
That was fun, and my head doesn't hurt.
