[Elecraft] S-meter read S9 with no signal

2008-11-30 Thread Ignacy

I built my K2 yesterday. It worked right away but the minimum S-meter reading
is S9, even with no antenna. With signals it easily goes to +60.

The SMTR settings are default. I tried fiddling with them but it seems the
problem is elsewhere.

RF gain action is awkward. When decreased all the way the S-meter goes to
+40 but not S60.

The radio seems more noisy than Mark V Field. Still, one can hear an
increase in noise when the preamp is turned on.

Have I messed up something in installation?

[Elecraft] UK Elecraft net report for Sunday 30th November

2008-11-30 Thread Dave G4AON
There were quite a few stations on the new, I would have expected less
as it's CQ WW this weekend. Topics covered included vat issues and
shipping issues when sending a transceiver back to Elecraft for repair
(http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/int-processing.htm partly covers the issue),
The recently announced K3 audio modifications and whether the choke
really makes much difference, Softrock hints and tips, rattles from the
K3 internal speaker, making antenna splitters and interfacing other
receivers to the K3, the disk space used to record a band using a
Perseus SDR receiver, plus a puzzle as to why one net member seemed to
be 70 - 80 Hz high in frequency on transmit with his K3.

Stations this week were:

G0VGS, Ian
G4NWJ, Jim
G0MJW, Mike
G4SJP, Stephen
G4IDA, Bernie
G4ERO, Collin
G4APO, Rowland
G0GJH, Andrew
G3NIC, Ken

73 until next week.

Re: [Elecraft] S-meter read S9 with no signal

2008-11-30 Thread Don Wilhelm
There are no 'default' settings for the S-meter. The adjustment
procedure is in the manual. Do these steps in the order listed.

1) Set the AGC Threshold to 3.80 volts measured at Control Board U2 pin 5
Note - if your 8 volt regulator is on the low side of its specification
you will not be able to achieve the 3.8 volt reading - in that case,
measure the 8 volt regulator output voltage and calculate 45% of that.
Set the AGC Threshold to that voltage.
2) With no antenna connected, turn the RF Gain control to maximum (full
clockwise), then enter the menu for CAL S LO. Set the menu parameter
one count above the value where the left bar turns off. Exit the menu.
3) Turn the RF Gain control to minimum (full counterclockwise), then
enter the menu for CAL S HI. Adjust the menu parameter to just
illuminate the rightmost bar of the bargraph. Exit the menu.
4) (Optional) If you have a calibrated signal generator that will
produce a 50 uV output at a frequency the K2 can tune to (preferably 40
meters), tune that signal for maximum S-meter reading with the preamp
off. If the S-meter reading is different than S-9, adjust the CAL S HI
menu parameter to produce an S-9 indication.

If you cannot achieve these results, that is an indication that you need
to do some troubleshooting.

[Elecraft] [K3] VGA cable - beware

2008-11-30 Thread Monty Shultes
I am preparing to install an amplifier on my K3. To get the ALC signal from
the 15 pin DIN plug I was hoping to use a VGA cable, cut one end off, and wire
it up accordingly.

Unfortunately pins 3,4,5,6,7,8 and 11 are all grounded in the cable. There are
4 shielded wires in the cable and the ground foil on the outside. So I will
have to cut off the offending pins or spring for a male connector.

[Elecraft] K3 frequency calibration

2008-11-30 Thread Stephen Prior
After participating in the UK Elecraft net briefly this morning, and feeling
that with the vfo 'on the nose' voices were a bit too low pitched, I thought
I would check the vfo calibration against the Russian freq standard on
4996kHz.

Using spot as reference and listening for the beat tones, the K3 had drifted
down by 10Hz. I set it when I first had the rig in June so it's had time to
settle down a bit now. I think a 10Hz drift is pretty reasonable given that
I don't have the higher stability reference option. It was quick and easy
to adjust too.

Thanks Elecraft!

[Elecraft] K2/100 unstable power...

2008-11-30 Thread IK1QHB

Hi folks

I have end to build the KPA100 few days ago but there's a problem to fix.
When drive my Titan 425 gold series with my K2/100 ( nø 5985) have unstable
power control ( 20, 21, 23, 24, 19 watts), the grid current and output power
jump up and down (tipically 800 to 1100w with 20w input) on every band,
specially on 40 and 80m.
When KPA100 is OFF i can see very little flutter on simple k2 at 5w... 0,1
0,2 watts of flutter on internal k2 wattmeter
Seems not Feedback problem or similar, my antenna is a GP and Ros is
perfect...
Have read the mods by elecraft:

Let me know if somebody have fix the problem with this or other mods.

Many thanks in any case, 73 de

Very nice feature when the frequency is as crowded as in the CQWW. Pity

I suggest that if AFX is enabled the monitor audio is also in AFX-sound
so you can stay 'in flow.

[Elecraft] K3 RX AGC right after a transmission

2008-11-30 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A
During the CQWW CW we found that RIGHT AFTER a transmission the RX AGC
was STILL busy doing its job and getting back to a lower level (s-meter
dropping from about s9 to the band noise level)
(AGC was at slow).

We SUSPECT that the AGC was still at the level from BEFORE the
transmission. So working a strong station gives a problem if the next
one is weak, you'll miss the first letters of the call. We're not sure
about the cause but we encoutered this problem quite often.
It would be better that after a transmission the RX would start at band
noise level and that there is no legacy whatsoever.

Anyway, the work around was setting the AGC to fast.

Did anyone else experience this? Is this a known problem?

Setting agc: threshold 5, the AGC ramp-up at 12, the fall-off setting at
default value (20)
SW: latest Beta.

Re: [Elecraft] S-meter read S9 with no signal

2008-11-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ignacy,

There are a number of possibilities causing the high S-meter reading.

Were you able to adjust the AGC Threshold to the correct voltage? What
was the result when you adjusted the CAL S LO and CAL S HI menu
parameters (were you able to get the correct bar to illuminate - or
extinguish)?

What happens to the S-meter reading if you turn the AGC off?

What happens to the S-meter reading if you place a jumper between pins 1
and 2 of the J10 header (or the J10 header location)?

The answers to the questions above will be an indicator of where to
begin looking for the problem.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 unstable power...

2008-11-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Paul,

That is the correct fix for the problem.

The K2 controls power using a control loop that includes the entire
transmit chain. The control loop is stable with the base K2, but when
the gain of the KPA100 is added, the control voltages can overshoot -
just how much depends on the gain of a particular K2/100 when operated
at the high power setting.

Since the transmit gain is usually greatest on 40 meters, you will
likely notice the problem more there, and it will be at its minimum on
10 meters where the gain is less. The exact gain will vary depending on
the particular component tolerance mix and the amount of careful
construction used when building the K2.

Increasing R98 will dampen the loop response, but be careful not to go
too high or th epower output on 10 meters may never get up as high as it
should. Decide how much you are willing to impact the 10 meter power
output and use the highest value resistor at R98 that still allows that
power on 10 meters.

Each K2 is different (because of slight differences in gain). Some will
adequately dampen the loop overshoot with the normal 270 ohms while
others can use a value as high as 1500 ohms at R98. Determine the best
value for your K2 by testing with a temporary pot as indicated in the
Power Control Mod instructions.

power control ( 20, 21, 23, 24, 19 watts), the grid current and output power
jump up and down (tipically 800 to 1100w with 20w input) on every band,
specially on 40 and 80m.
When KPA100 is OFF i can see very little flutter on simple k2 at 5w... 0,1
0,2 watts of flutter on internal k2 wattmeter
Seems not Feedback problem or similar, my antenna is a GP and Ros is
perfect...
Have read the mods by elecraft:

http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/Power_Control_Mod.html

Let me know if somebody have fix the problem with this or other mods.

Many thanks in any case, 73 de

Paul IK1QHB

[Elecraft] External speakers?

2008-11-30 Thread NZ8J
I would like to use two external speakers with my K3 setting them up one
on each side of the radio. Has anyone found something that somewhat
matches in color and size to the K3 and has a good sound? Seems like
Kenwood used to make a smaller speaker that might work. Would like to
hear from anyone who has a similar setup.

Re: [Elecraft] External speakers?

2008-11-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Tim,

Not addressing the aesthetics of the speakers, but pointing out other
considerations.

In addition to the K3, do you have other audio sources that you want to
listen to while in the shack?
If the answer is 'yes', you may want to consider something like I have
here - reasonably good stereo speakers (mine are the old RS Solo-3B)
that are fed by an audio power amplifier. Ahead of the amplifier is a
Behringer 802 mixer that has inputs from an FM tuner, a tape deck, and
the K3 as well as connections in and out of the computer soundcard. The
sound is great.

The soundcard feeding the mixer is different than the one connected
direct to the K3 line-in/line-out for use with digital modes.

I cannot comment on the RF immunity of this setup. My antennas are all
resonant and located more than 80 feet from the shack, so there is
little possibility of RF in the shack. Others with non-resonant
antennas close to the shack location may experience problems.

Consistent with Jim Brown's (K9YC) recommendations, the computer is
bonded both to the radio and the mixer, and they are all powered from
the same AC outlet.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Spontaneously changing config?

2008-11-30 Thread paul

Down the years I have found that flashing a new BIOS on computer
motherboards can also occasionally generate a surprise change or
two. Why this should be I have never discovered but, eg, having your
boot media priority changed can cause a distraught hour or two for the unwary.

Yeah, the rule of thumb is leave the bios alone unless you have a
really good reason for updating it.

Arie:

During the CQWW CW we used my K3 at PI4D and tried out the AFX.

Very nice feature when the frequency is as crowded as in the CQWW.
Pity the sidetone (monitor) is normal mono.

ONLY if you are using a single speaker. With dual speakers, AFX works nicely!

I suggest that if AFX is enabled the monitor audio is also in
AFX-sound so you can stay 'in flow.

Yeah, I have a pair of LabTech SS-700 speakers that I've had around for
quite a while. They are black, just about the same height as the K3, and sit
nicely and unobtrusively alongside the rig.

While they have amplifiers, it leave it off so they operate straight
through. They sound FB.

Those are old speakers, but they're still around. Shoot, I just checked and
saw a brand new pair still in the original box offered on e-bay for a
current bid of $0.99!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RX AGC right after a transmission

2008-11-30 Thread Lyle Johnson

Hello Arie!

... We SUSPECT that the AGC was still at the level from
BEFORE the transmission.

Yes, AGC is suspended during transmission, then resumes during receive.
The assumption is that the band hasn't changed that much in the
milliseconds (CW QSK) to several seconds (SSB voice).

...the work around was setting the AGC to fast.

In general, fast AGC is most often used for CW and slow AGC for voice
or data operation.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: so just who owns a K3?

2008-11-30 Thread Alan Bloom
I first met Dave Sumner not long after I joined ARRL as a W1AW operator
right out of college in 1972. One day this guy came over to the station
to operate the contest after the code practice transmission was over.
He looked to be maybe 17. He said his name was Dave and he worked as an
Assistant Secretary over in the main ARRL HQ building. I didn't know
what an Assistant Secretary was but I figured he must be some local
high school student who came in after school to help out the
secretaries.

He was a good operator though. As the last of the code practice
transmission ended, he leaned over my shoulder and made three CW QSOs
before I could even finish writing the time in the log and get up out of
the chair. I was also impressed that he could send CW with one hand
while simultaneously writing in the log with the other. (He's
left-handed as I recall.)

I later found out that he was actually a year older than I. I also
learned that an Assistant Secretary was not someone who helped the
secretaries sort paper clips, but rather a fairly high-level position in
the administration.

He always seemed a high-energy kind of guy, extremely enthusiastic about
ham radio. It's nice to see he hasn't gotten jaded over the years.
