[Elecraft] Sub receiver crosstalk

2009-06-23 Thread Brett Howard
Just to be sure...

I've got a 50uV signal being injected into ANT1 of the KAT3 and a dummy
load connected to ANT2. I hear the signal on the main RX at S9 and
heard the signal on the SubRX (listening to the dummy load) at about
S2.5 (the third light is flickering). I'm not really able to affect
this level by moving internal TMP cables or external cables. There is
no cable between the signal generator and the ANT1 connector. Is this
common?

Ok so I just found a problem when digging around in the radio. Looks
like the screw in the top of the KAT3 board wasn't replaced. Putting
that screw back in makes the radio show the signal at S1.

I should note that there seems to be a strange bug in the software for
me. If I hold BSET to go back to the mainRX. Then hold it again to go
back to the SubRX the signal still shows S9... I have to switch to ANT1
and then back to ANT2 in order to get the correct S-meter reading. Is
this something anyone else can reproduce? I'm running 3.19...

[Elecraft] K3 #3215 arrived today

2009-06-23 Thread AC6JA
Just received my factory-assembled K3 with KAT3 auto antenna tuner, KRX3
sub receiver, KTCXO3 temp controlled oscillator, and 2 sets of 2.8 khz, 1.0
khz, and 400 hz 8-pole filters for both receivers along with the USB
adapter. Sure sounds nice! I haven't even transmitted yet. I really like
the
AFX audio effects, CW decode, and auto spot features.
More to come...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 QSK?

2009-06-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Don and all,

This is not a specific comment on your situation, I am just using it as
one example. IF everyone would read through the menu settings for the
radio, I believe a lot of these type questions would be answered. Yes,
a bit of logical thought about the effects of each setting is in order
too, but an understanding of the configuration settings available in any
radio (the K3 included) can be had by just looking through the available
menu settings - "it is in the manual" (plus a few of the K3 firmware
release notes for the new functions). For *all* radios with menu
settings, an understanding of the menu items available will help you to
set up the radio the way you want it. It is true for the Yaesu 817, the
K2 and the K3 and many others. You do not know the radio until you know
what is contained in the menus.

W7OTV will have at least two and possibly more K3s on the air. WS7L and

At present the SSB stations plan to use lesser rigs :-)

[Elecraft] K3 QSK

2009-06-23 Thread Toby Pennington
A friend of mine and myself noticed thumping using QSK with certain settings on
the front panel.

My friend referred this issue to Wayne at Elecraft, he was able to duplicate
it, and said it was being added to the "to do" list.

Best way to eliminate this is to set the rig to semi BK IN, and turn the delay
to a setting of 2.
This should give you good QSK CW.

I have no problem hearing 40m BC carriers between dits at 40 wpm using

Sending a string of DITS using an external keyer, and in QSK mode, I can hear

At that point the receiver is muted, so 20wpm or greater on my radio as it

Is there a firmware adjustment that will improve this?

The Tx EQ is applied in AM and FM modes, so you should be able to tailor
it pretty nicely.

Some months ago (I don't know exactly when) the components in the Tx
audio path, and Rx headphone path, were changed to improve low frequency
response.

The most recent Beta release increases AM maximum modulation.

Paul, don't touch C22 cap (Cb for pin3 "bypass")!
You can to add 1uF cap to VDD line (U2 pin10).

So does that mean that after some specific serial number there is
better LF response in both transmit and receive than earlier radios?

Is this a change that can be worked into the mods list, or would it
require replacement of the board(s)?

If anyone is going through the trouble of changing the 10uF caps at C9 and
C13 on the front panel DSP Board, I suggest going to 330 uF to ensure that a
broad range of headphones are covered, including old models with fairly Lo-Z
drivers.

The National LM4811MM spec sheet notes that the bypass cap (Cb) value as
described above is critical with respect to turn-on clicks and pops.

"Capacitor Cb is the most critical component to minimize turn on pops since
it determines how fast the LM4811 turns on."

It's already at 10 uF. Before changing it, I would test for clicks/pops
both ways to ensure that artifacts are not present.

[Elecraft] K3 Beta F/W Release 3.19 for FD Ops... In case you missed the announcement

2009-06-23 Thread Tom Hammond
Folks:

If you're taking your K3 out to Field Day this year, AND especially
if you're going to have unfamiliar (I call 'em 'fiddley-fingered')
ops using the rig on SSB (especially), there is a feature recently
released in BETA firmware release 3.19 which you might be interested in.

Over the past years, one of the MAJOR(!) problems our Field Day SSB
stations have had to contend with was uninitiated SSB ops messing
with the MIC GAIN, COMPRESSION LEVEL, and POWER OUTPUT LEVEL...
trying to achieve an indicated "100W" on the output meter... Of
course, you and I know that virtually all built-in power meters in
just about any rig ('cept the K3) indicate some form of AVERAGE POWER
OUTPUT, especially on SSB.

Given the ballistics of the needles in the power meter and the
vagaries of the human voice, when you're actually putting out 100W of
RF, you're lucky if you see an INDICATED 25W-30W on the
meter!!! Some newer rigs offer PEAK OUTPUT indications, but not
many. As a result it's (almost) human nature to want to try to TURN
THE WICK up as far as possible, to get that last milliwatt of RF out
the back of the rig... UNfortunately, we do this not realizing that,
in almost all instances, we have managed to mangle our transmitted
audio so badly that the op on the other end can't make heads or tails
out of the exchange we're trying to convey. Our Bad!!!

Enter he K3's most recent feature addition: MIC / CMP / PWR LOCK...!

Now, you (the K3 owner) can preset the MIC GAIN, COMPRESSION, and
OUTPUT POWER LEVEL to levels you know are suitable for your K3 and
your users, and you can LOCK those three settings so that no amount
of button twiddling by (most) users will be able to crank them out of range.

You can read the docs on the new release and then download firmware
v. 3.19 from Elecraft now.

Just a thought.

73,

Tom Hammond N0SS

The Tx EQ is applied in AM and FM modes, so you should be able to tailor
it pretty nicely.

Some months ago (I don't know exactly when) the components in the Tx
audio path, and Rx headphone path, were changed to improve low frequency
response.

The most recent Beta release increases AM maximum modulation.

The AM is lacking, in that with full mic gain and full compression I

I would like to be able to control the audio as I can on SSB, which is

[Elecraft] Using NR tip

2009-06-23 Thread Rick Braun
I have been generally frustrated with the NR and stopped using it. Then,
playing around I turned off the effects, AFX and tried NR in vanilla mono. It
works much better. My ignorant theory is that AFX and NR together is more
processing than the audio can take and lots of content is lost. Without AFX
the NR is very effective. You might like it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 headphones

2009-06-23 Thread Brett Howard
Where are these caps? I see them on page 28 of 52 on the schematics but
where do they physically live in the unit. I assume they are on the main
DSP board. Also as far as the "grounded 1uF cap" are you talking about the
lil decoupling nugget they had sitting there? Guess it couldn't hurt...

Your pictures say after AF and IF amplifier modifications. What IF mods did
you make?

I has tried replacing the 10uF caps with 100uF in AF-amp, also in
data-sheet for LM4811MM we see grounded pin 10 have to add for 1uF cap.
The result is excellent with my ProSet.
Sound clean and deep. Signals became more raised, proturberant, appeared
"body of the sound", clearly differ the most small details in signals.
Such sensation, that earlier the signals got through blanket,
but now here is they, straight before my eyes, and they proturberant and
volumetric.
As my ears as SpectroLab also "sees the difference". You can see my
plots "before" and "after" same mods.

Jim,

It certainly could be the bandpass response of the microphone element
itself. What are you using for a microphone on the K-3? Check that out.

Tx EQ is applied.

You can adjust the deviation as well.

[Elecraft] FM via K3

2009-06-23 Thread JIM DAVIS
Gentlemen,

Is there any way to manipulate the transmitted audio when on FM using the K3???
Nothing in the
manual
suggests that it's even remotely possible, while of course when on SSB or AM it
can be
accomplished
using either TX-EQ or ESSB!

I ask this question because I work a club-rptr on 6mtrs w/FM and eventhough I'm
FQ into the
machine
they mentioned to me that my FM transmitted audio sounded a tad (SHARP) lacking
the fidelity of
most mobile FM rigs available today!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 :: time set program

2009-06-23 Thread Roy Morris
I have found that I must quickly hit the enter button ("enter" written in
green) to get the K3 Timekeeper screen to execute the update. Immediately
after it updates it leaves CONFIG: TIME and goes back to normal frequency
display. Roy Morris W4WFB

Re: [Elecraft] Uniquely terrific

2009-06-23 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dick,
You are so right! Elecraft has a great and unique products backed by
service which is unbeatable. It is fun to feel part of the design team!
These radios are selling world wide despite all sales being direct. I
actually feel this latter policy is an advantage as Radios in the Ireland
and the UK sell for nearly 80% more than in the US. One can pay shipping,
the required taxes and still come out ahead of the game. The modular
approach to the design also helps as one can build their radio up gradually
to the level of machine desired with a more moderate cash flow. I think
these guys have got it right. It is amazing to see the number of K3s that
are being used around the world despite having to order from California.

Maybe the smaller lighter radio also has its advantages when it comes
to shipping. I suspect the kit also helps - it did in my own case as the
reduction in price of the kit is magnified by a drop in taxes.

Not since the days of my Drake 2B have I felt the same loyalty to a
manufacturer of ham radio equipment and the Elecraft Company could show
Drake, "how to suck eggs".

I'm afraid I cannot stop myself from making a comment. It's a cheer.
It's a remark for a remarkable situation.

Never before in my life within amateur radio or any other venture, have
I seen such easy flow of information and feedback up and down (or is it
in and out of) the interface between user and provider.

I've dealt with various tech support venues, some of which I rate quite
highly, however the interplay between user/customer and provider is so
natural as to be a true partnership.

I knew, when I re-awakened my interest in ham radio, that I wanted a
radio I could grow with. "Fait acomplie." What I didn't know was that
I would witness the process of its growth.

Glad to be and Elecrafter!
