Re: [Elecraft] pulsing hash

2009-09-24 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A
Dick,

This could be the KIO2 cable inside the K2, running from the serial
connector to the control board.
If it sags down, this will cause that kind of hash because it is too
close to the receiver circuitry.
Keep this cable as close to the topcover as you can.

Onderwerp: [Elecraft] pulsing hash

When running KComm, on the K2 as a logging program, I hear a pulsing
hash, a varying amplitude hash with a peak rate of a few seconds.
More prevalent on 40 meters, reducing a bit on 20 meters.
When I disconnect all is OK. The hash is not that disturbing but if
you tend to pay attention it could be bothersome. Any ideas?
Thank you for your attention.
Best regards

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Check Your Buttons

2009-09-24 Thread David Cutter
A quick look at the circuit diagram shows that buttons are taken from a
potential divider to CD74HC4051M inputs. These switches (unless I've
misread the diagram) will therefore take the input current of the
multiplexer which is typically 1uA. I don't know the spec for the Elecraft
switch but a similar one requires a minimum current of 10uA. This should be
checked more rigorously, but it might indicate a potential problem.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Check Your Buttons

Paul,

I am very surprised that this has not come up before!
My K3 is #570 and it has had 4 front panel boards (a couple for what I
called flaky or just bad switches and the rest for other reasons) and
the same problem you describe is still there. The latest one is the
best, but I still get some strange things happening - mostly with the
BAND and MODE switches, but it has occurred occasionally with other
switches, and it is not very reproducible - it can be very intermittent,
or it can happen fairly often.

When the K3 went back to Elecraft the beginning of the year for a
different problem they checked out the Front Panel switches and said the
switch operation is fine, but it's not. I have seen the problem on a
fairly new K3 owned by a ham near here I have seen the problem on
the K3s at the Elecraft booth at Hamcom. Again, it is intermittent.

For the longest time I figured it was me and the way I press the buttons
on #570 I did try SW test and Sca Adc - at times the beeps were
slow, unevenly spaced or did not appear at all and it did not seem to me
that the switches with flickering scan codes were the switches that
were causing mis-operations. But when I press and hold the ALT to
switch sidebands, and the radio changes three modes, maybe a band,
reverses sideband and turns on the RX ANT, it causes one to wonder
but K3support does not have any of these problems!

So I have decided that the K3 switches are a trade-off to have the best
receiver that is out there in the Amateur market. And so are the
several other operational quirks, but again I can put up with those when
and if they come up to the top of the upcoming K3 features list.

Like you, I'm out of warranty, so $400 is out of the question for yet
another Front Panel board. Besides, I don't think it can be fixed.

I checked the solder connections in the KAT100 and retouched a few. I
noticed no change in behavior. I put the radio away for a few days and
 revisited the problem today

Before doing anything I did a SWR Bridge alignment on the KPA100

Currently, the tune sequence gives a 1.0-1 reading on the K2 meter

When keying 100 watts into a dummy load the power is reduced by

 using an antenna.

Using the menu for tuner readings, after hitting tune in the dummy

[Elecraft] K3 S-Meter and Noise

2009-09-24 Thread Jim Harris

Hi All,

I've had my new K3 up and running for about a week after replacing the DSP
board during assembly due to the 5vdc rail being shorted to ground. The
S-meter shows about S-2/3 noise and there is about an equal level of noise from
the speaker. I have an IC-756ProIII sitting beside it and it shows S-0 with
minimum noise from the speaker. Of course, I'm using the same mode and have
set the filters in both to the same width. I have played with the preamp and
attenuator in both and the K3 always shows a higher noise level with
accompanying S-meter reading.

My K2 is extremely quiet and does just great on the many portable trips I take.
I may well be missing something on the K3 in all the myriad menu settings of
the K3 but don't have a clue at this point as to how to proceed. I sure don't
want to think this $2000 radio has such a noise problem and I'm going to have
to live it. Does anyone have any information that may help? I would be most
appreciative.

Thank you, have a good day and 73.

[Elecraft] K3 S-Meter and Noise

2009-09-24 Thread Don Rasmussen
I had the same issue with my newest K3, so I had a basis to compare to another
K3. Wayne put on his phone engineer hat and designed a circuit mod that reduced
gain to an IF transformer, a resistor change. I can't imagine this kind of
service from any other company - amazing.

Since then they have been working on a provision in the utility program that
will achieve the same effect, using only the firmware. Gotta love SDR. It's in
the release notes but not quite ready AFAIK.

[Elecraft] OT: Maytag Bravos RFI

2009-09-24 Thread Don Rasmussen
The wife gave me the green light to replace our Whirlpool Duet washing machine,
aside from the terrible interference it put on HF, she was not happy with the

clean.

My decision, to abandon high efficiency front load and go back to tried and
true conventional top load washer that has no computer/switcher power supply to
hash me.

Two days ago I bought a top loader, a Maytag Bravos from Fry's at $699 marked
down $200. Should be a good one right? Nope, S5 interference across 17m and 20m
every 15 khz. Seems they are now putting front load technology
(computer/switcher) in top load washers. The clue is if the washer will only
accept HD detergent.

So that's two 1K retail machines that I cannot use.

Fry's to their credit, hauled off the Bravos washer and brought in an LG I had
selected. I had avoided the Korean alternative wanting to buy US, however the
salesman said it was their best line.

It is clearly a better quality unit, and even though it is a front loader with

The new washer is an LG WM0642H.

Yes, and also to use twisted pairs for each signaling circuit between

http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf for descriptions of a
serial cable that fixes problems like this. My initial experiments on
this were the result of serious RFI issues with the K2 serial cable in
close proximity to a long wire TX antenna that I used on 80M and 160M.

Another point. Cable shielding IS a good thing, but using twisted pairs
and terminating them to the chassis at each end, NOT to the circuit
board, is the most important thing.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Maytag Bravos RFI

2009-09-24 Thread W0SD Ed Gray
I would consider this a whole lot less OT than a lot of things I read.
I found it very valuable. There seems to be a site for nearly everything
on the internet anymore. A valuable site would be one that hams would
participate in and list items that are clean and don't interfere with
the radio spectrum. The switching supplies seem to be a major culprit
and it is just going to get worse. Even those that meet the FCC Part 15
Class B standards can be a real problem with our amateur equipment. In
roughly the last year I have had switching power supply noise from my
new computer which made DXing on the low bands impossible until I solved
with filtering on the AC line. I had router noise across all the bands
which made many, many frequenies un-useable some of which were places I
operate a lot which I could not anymore. Fortunately I pretty well
cured this by slowing the speed. Both of those answers came from this
reflector so I would not call help permitting me to use my K3's OT. My
latest problem which I have not been able to solve is 24 khz switching
noise from my Outback MPPT solar controller. The harmonics from it make
it all the way up to two meters. It is S-9+15 db on 160M.

This switching noise is a tough one as IMHO it should be cured at the
source rather than the output where instead of stopping the switching
frequency you have the whole spectrum of interference to deal with. Of
course if you start modifying internally you are going to void the warranty.

At this point based on my last years experience before I buy anything
different I am going to do my very best to try and find out about radio
noise and if I can not then be sure I can return it without a penalty.
Where possible one may have to bring a K3 with a gel battery to the
store and check things out. The thing is there are a lot of things now
that are noise sources that I for one would not expect as almost
everything is going to switching supplies.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Maytag Bravos RFI

2009-09-24 Thread N2TK
Just thinking about this. Is it across all HF bands RF type pickup? Or is it
band specific? Is it only when the drum motor is running or is the RF noise
there all the time the washer is on?
Is the noise being picked up from the shields of the coax - do you hear the
RF noise if you disconnect the cables from the rig and short or 50 ohm
terminate the coax connector(s)?

[Elecraft] K7VK on 6m from Bare Cone Mountain in DN25tr Montana

2009-09-24 Thread Lance Collister
Hello!

Just in case you are in the western North America and still need grid DN25 on
6m,
I wanted to let you know that K7VK, K7PX and I are planning to head up to 7800'
Bare Cone Mountain in the Bitterroot Range on Monday September 28 for an
overnight
6m Terrestrial Propagation Mode mini DXpedition. If anyone wants to see on
Google
Earth where we will be, the coordinates are:

Latitude: 45°43'9.43N
Longitude: 114°24'44.24W

I am bringing along my K3 with PR6 preamp, laptop computer with GPS
timekeeping.
Vick has Steve's 5 element backup yagi tuned up, and I have broken down my
6M8GJ
and Portable Mast ( http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/6M8GJassembly.htm ) into
largish sections for transport and fast assembly up on the mountain top. I
will
take along LMR600 low loss feedline, just as on a 6m EME DXpediiton - the only
difference is that we will not be running an amplifier up there. We hope to
just
beat the snow up there ;-)

Vick says that he also will have liaison on 40m, so we will be monitoring
7133-7136 if people are not copying us and want to let us know to turn the
antenna
or something ;-) We will NOT have any internet capability up there, but please
watch the ON4KST Region 2 6m chat page and the DX CLUSTER spots for information
posted by others: http://www.on4kst.info/chat/login.php?band=7

We will monitor either 50.190 or 50.125 when we are not transmitting. Please
don't expect us to be transmitting all the time, because we will only be on
battery power. If people don't hear us, but are interested in working us, they
should call for us. We will come on if we copy anything. Based on my
experience
and the 7800' high QTH we will have, I am sure we will be able to contact
anyone
between 600 and 1200 miles on JT65A mode using D layer scatter and under 600
miles
on ground wave. This little barefoot (100w) DXpedition should demonstrate the
ability to collect grids year-round on 6m using the power of JT65A.

We will plan to start out between 1800 and 1900Z Monday on 50.190 beaming NW on
JT65A mode (we will always XMIT in the first seqeuence, regardless of mode). I
am
inclined to stay primarily on 50.190 throughout the day and evening, switching
to
various modes as is appropriate. We will have CW and SSB capability also in
the
event signals are extraordinarily strong, and will monitor 50.125 when we are
not
busy working stations on 50.190.

On Tuesday morning we will plan to operate FSK441 on 50.260 (and possibly QSY
to
some other frequency as required). If we are going to be listening up 10, we
will
send something like CQU10 K7VK DN25. Similarly, if we are listening down 10,
we
will send something like CQD10 K7VK DN25. We probably won't be on past about
mid-morning on Tuesday, since we will have to tear down and leave at least by
noon.

I hope people who still need DN25 can be QRV at some point during our little
mountain top excursion ;-) GL and VY 73, Lance

take hours and hours to try and cure the problem. Some of the problems

Appreciate your consideration.

Begin forwarded message:

When running KComm, on the K2 as a logging program, I hear a pulsing
hash, a varying amplitude hash with a peak rate of a few seconds.
More prevalent on 40 meters, reducing a bit on 20 meters.
When I disconnect all is OK. The hash is not that disturbing but if
you tend to pay attention it could be bothersome. Any ideas?
 Thank you for your attention.

A quick look at the circuit diagram shows that buttons are taken

 Elecraft
switch but a similar one requires a minimum current of 10uA. This
 should be
checked more rigorously, but it might indicate a potential problem.
David,

The K3's front panel switches do not have a minimum required current.
I just verified this again with the manufacturer. They have gold-
plated contacts on the PC board and should be extremely reliable.

Regarding the switch test function in the menu: A small amount of
digit flicker is perfectly normal. The A to D converter has an
ambiguity of +/- one count, and the firmware algorithm reading the
switch has no hysteresis, therefore +/- count of flicker is also to be
expected.

In firmware, we read the switch voltage several times, average them,
and look for the proper switch code based on bins that have a large
amount of excess margin. So the operator should not be concerned in
the least about a deviation of even several counts in their own switch
read voltages.

If you're experiencing any type of switch-read error that isn't a hard
failure, it is probably something that I can improve in firmware. I'll
be happy to work with you on this -- please give me a detailed example.

[Elecraft] RFI noise

2009-09-24 Thread William Carver
I lost a PC power supply, ordered a pair of replacements from Tiger
Direct. They were neither half-KW monsters nor their cheapest supply. It
had VDE/UL/FCC stickers, ALL of the agency certifications.

Suspecting a line surge had killed the original supply I decided to
stuff some MOV at the input connector of the new supplies before I even
installed them. I opened the cases and found The PCB silkscreen showed
RFI filter components, but none were installed: the board had direct
wire jumpers from power in to the switching circuits.

I connected it to the motherboard and found switcher EMI over the HF
spectrum. For the record, my shop is in the garage, powered from
seperate breakers, shop strips have 30A/230V encapsulated line filters
and their own MOV. The radio gear was in a bedroom with coax feedlines
goubg directly outside, buried for 250 feet to a yagi 50 feet in the
air. No open wire feeders, no longwires direct to the shack.

It seemed pretty clear the supplies had passed agency approvals with the
filter components in place, but once they had the sticker they stopped
putting those parts on the board.

Re: [Elecraft] Check Your Buttons [switch current is _not_ too low]

2009-09-24 Thread AD6XY

I remember having this problem with an old Advantest Drift-o-matic spectrum
analyser at Uni. The buttons stopped working because the plastic let out
some oils and this coated the gold and stopped the contacts working. I am
not saying this is what has happened to Elecraft, I am sure that problem
from 20 years ago if fixed now. My fairly recent Anritsu spectrum analyser
has diffficult buttons too - as apparently does this laptop so it is a
common problem.

My K3 has sometimes had problems with switches too, but only rarely. My K2
is much worse in this respect.

Have we found any user applications for the connector on the bottom of the
panel yet?

putting those parts on the board.

THIS kind of information is invaluable. I had a stash of common mode
chokes and line-certified capacitors so added the line filter onto the
supplies I bought, but vowed NEVER AGAIN to get no-name supplies.
Thanks, Tony.

You should report them to the FCC. They could get in big trouble if

I installed a 350w PS from Antec in one of my computers and the noise
disappeared.

One other computer, I installed a Corcom 6EF1 RFI module at the AC input and
that cleared up the computer hash on 30m. This drove me nuts for about two
years as I was hearing this warbling hash going up and down the 30m band.
Thought it was some kind of digital noise from somplace in EU. After
flipping breakers in the house, noticed that the 2nd floor breaker stopped
the noise...narrowed it down to the computer ps.

I've bought the parts for several high-end computers from Tiger Direct
and haven't any problem with power supplies (or much of anything else,
for that matter), but I always buy the power supplies made by Ultra (a
solid brand name) because I like their modular cable system. Ultra even
offers a full lifetime warranty now if you register it online, and their
reputation for addressing user problems is very good.

I reverted to another older rig where the two rcvrs have separate

The MFJ-1026 will cure it. You only need a simple external antenna near the
noise source. Phase that kind of noise out.

Cheers,
Don

Hi Don

I know what you were going thru as my next door neighbor has a Kenmore
front-loader (made by Whirlpool, I think) and I hear the RFI on my radio and I
am 200 feet away from his house and the antenna is 400 feet in the backyard
from his house. Seems every 15/18KHz or so, I hear the hash noise...since I use
30m, it falls on 10.103 and 10.118 but is fairly broad so covers up weak
signals.

I gave him an EMI/RFI suppressor block but that didn't even work...so I guess,
the mods have to be made internally but I don't even want to go there.

Looks like the FCC is turning their backs on this one. I have a Maytag top
loader with a rotary analog switch and sure hope it doesn't poop out
anytime soon. Hate to dig into my stash of ham radio .

At least on the K2 with it's bouncing switches it is not only a known
problem, especially with the A/B and A=B switches, but you can fairly easily
replace them - I changes out about 20 of them on my two K2s. And you get
some physical feedback on the K2. On the K3 that is not true.

[Elecraft] RFI noise

2009-09-24 Thread William Carver
The power supplies sans the RFI filter were to repair a computer that's
now gone. I might be able to find the second supply that I never used,
but it's old business. Honestly there is so much of this coming over
that the FCC couldn't cope with it all even if it happened yesterday.

Cutting corners on RFI is a two way street: without any filtering your
computer is more vulnerable to our RF getting in via the power cord.
The info from Tony that PCPOWER IS a reliable power supply vendor that
will probably protect their reputation and supply performance is the
good news.

Re: [Elecraft] RFI

2009-09-24 Thread Bill W5WVO
Tom,

So-called EMI/RFI filters are typically differential-mode devices (i.e., there
is an L/C filter in each side of the AC line). Noise generated by switching
power supplies is, at least in my experience, usually common-mode. Differential
mode RFI filters won't do a thing for it. Get a big ferrite toroidal core (type
43 is a good mix) and wrap it fully with the AC line cord close to the machine.
You will probably find that the noise is eliminated or reduced. If it is
reduced
but not eliminated, put another core in series with the first one, extending
the
line cord if necessary. If your neighbor is willing to continue to help you
solve the problem, I'd try this before going to a noise phaser, which are a
pain
to adjust every time you switch frequencies.

Re: [Elecraft] RFI noise

2009-09-24 Thread Stewart
Bill,
In the UK it is the case that many SMPSU's have, once CE certification has been
obtained
been manufactured in volume with the input filter parts omitted.
These are in the main imports from Tiawan and China.

These non-compliant PSU's have been brought to the attention of our regulator
Ofcom,
which dragged it's heels, and has finally - done nothing.

In the UK we have TSO's (Trading Standards Offices) which are locally based.
They are tasked with enforcing vast amounts of EU legislation with little
funding.
The EMC Directive to which these PSU's must comply comes within their remit.

Trading Standards were recently involved in a investigation into a Taiwanese
company
that was importing SMPSU's that breached a number of CE marking requirements,
including the EMC one.

Although substantial evidence was gathered (at some expense to TS) which in the
case
of EMC compliance with EN55022 showed the PSU's to be over the limit by 30dB,
no prosecution has taken place.

This was due to poor wording which crept in when the UK regulations were
transposed
from the EU ones. A total waste of time and money...

Trading Standards have stated, that until the UK EMC Regulations 2006 are
amended,
they will not take on any further EMC complaints.

This leaves the door wide open for any company that wishes to avoid the extra
expense
of CE compliance to do what it wants.
