Re: [Elecraft] K3:CW send decode on a Straight key?
John - To check your CW why not use a program such as CwGet v1.65 by UA9OV? This is excellent for checking your Morse sending using either a straight key or a bug. Alternatively, you can send on an external simple r.f. oscillator using a straight key and listen to it on your K3. The decoder on the K3 works very well in that way. 73 David G4DMP In a recent message, juergen wrote ... > >Hi > >Is there anyway of making the K3's CW decoder work on the straight key >port? Re: [Elecraft] K3:CW send decode on a Straight key?
I'd like to see this as well as I enjoy being able to see the TX decode when the paddles are in the back of the radio but when I run for a contest the paddles go into the K1EL keyer and the straight key port is used. Would be nice to be able to always use the K1EL and not lose the decode feature. ~Brett On Sat, 2010-01-23 at 22:02 -0800, juergen wrote: > Hi > > Is there anyway of making the K3's CW decoder work on the straight key port? > I am using an external logikey and would like to see what I am sending now > and then. > > John > > > > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 why can't we use narrow Tx filters
I have agree that it puzzles me that the K3 will do ESSB but yet not be able to narrow the Tx bandwidth. There are many times that I would have liked to be able to do this. Icom's flagship radios (7800 and 7700) do this and I have been listening when the adjustment has been done and I found the audio became much easier to copy as the band was noisy with many stations operating close together. Is there a reason this cannot be enabled Elecraft? 73's Gary VK4FD Sent via BlackBerry® from Telstra __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3: Why can't I use my 1.8kHz filter for SSB TX?
Hi Brian I would also like to know the answer as well. Its a feature that works well on the Icom PRO radios. You can narrow the TX bandwidth and produce very penetrating audio without playing around all day with mic EQ settings. In fact most cheap mics can be made to sound pretty decent when transmitting through a narrow bandwidth filter. I am surprised that variable TX bandwidth is not a feature on the K3 yet. Another feature that works well is the Kenwood High Boost. This feature is found on the TS870S, TS850S and the TS480. This high boost can brighten most microphones without playing with a TX EQ all day. Its very effective on 75 meters on SSB for cutting through QRN. It certainly sounds better than the excessive bass and ESSB audio that people torture your ears with. ESSB station who call people in the DX window with the excessive bassy audio should be put up against the wall and shot for torturing other people. I have found the K3's DSP filter on 1.5KHZ bandwidth to be very effective. We just need people that use communications quality audio for this filter bandwidth. The Heil HC4 and HC5 are fantastic microphones for DX work on the K3. [Elecraft] K3 - Would like wider CW receive, menu setting?
On my K2 I am used to listing on the 2.7k filter so I can hear up or down the band a ways until I find a signal. I just built my new K3 today. It is limiting the CW receive passband to about 1.9k and cuts off at 2000 htz on the high end. This is even though I set the width for 2.8k. Is there a menu setting to adjust this? The passband on SSB really goes well over 2.7k. I have the 2.7k and .5k 5 pole filters installed. Even when I use shift to raise the CW pass band, the upper cut off will go up to about 2400 htz but then cuts off at the bottom. The cut at the top is steep leading me to believe that it is DSP generated, the cut at the bottom is more tapered and looks like the edge of the crystal filter. Also, is there a way to adjust the BFO so the entire passband is shifted a littler higher on CW only? (I dont want to change my tone pitch which I keep at 700). On my K2, the 2.7K passband on CW was set up from 100 htz to 2800 hts and I would like to set up the K3 as close to that as I can for listening up and down the band. Thanks for your help! [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, Surprisingly the weather was dry and clear this week. More sun this week than I have seen in over a month. It was pleasant. The weather forecast has been for rain and clouds each day. They are not doing well in the prediction business; I will stick with my much more reliable weather rock :) The only time it did not work for me was when the wind was so strong it blew into the next county. 150 mph winds can do things like that. Propagation was mostly good due to the more active sun. Sunspots and coronal mass ejections are keeping the aurora photographers happy and the ionosphere perked up. The fox hunts were fun but the 40 meter session was tough. I could not hear either one well enough to even bother to send a dit. Oh well. 80 meters was much better and I found both of them and worked them. I am waiting for the summer 20 meter hunts. That band seems to work better for me. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Power output low on 30 meter band
A few days ago, I repaired my K3 which had this problem as it came from the factory. After following diagnostic instructions from Elecraft, what I found was that the band pass filter at the level that includes the drive to the transverter output was mis-tuned. The following is part of my report my report to Wayne and to Elecraft support. C179 and C183 are trimmer capacitors for the band pass filter at the level before the transceiver output. If you don't have the optional transceiver output accessory, this method becomes more difficult. "C179 was peaked, I assume properly. C183 was stuck and didn't want to turn with the alignment tool. I used a jeweler's screwdriver that didn't have an insulated sheath and "un-stuck" C183. Next, I peaked C183. At 10.149, a cw tone is 2.3 divisions peak on the scope; at 10.101, the cw tone is 2.1 divisions. Reverting to normal HF mode, 110 watts output is reached with no problem. The other bands seem unchanged with normal full output, etc. " The diagnostic process that I followed requires that you have something to measure the drive level at that point on 30 meters and also 40 meters; a used a dual trace 30 MHz oscilloscope. Another possibility is that a 8.215 MHz notch filter is mis-tuned; apparently this has happened before. Let me know if you need more info.. Wayne and Elecraft support in the person of Gary Surrency were quite helpful. [Elecraft] K3: Power output low on 30 meter band
Since putting together my K3 two weeks ago I had a chance to try it out on 30 meters today. I tuned up my delta loop to 10 meters and then noticed that the power was low. It was dead on with a 1.1:1 SWR on the same frequency of 10.106 MHz. And, the meters for the Pro III were reading about 101 watts output (two different meters). So I switched the antenna back to the K3 and checked the SWR and it was about the same, 1.2:1 for the same frequency. But, the power output is only about 65 watts even though the power adjust knob reads 100 watts. I tried different readings and about 55 watts, the external meter power output starts to flatten out compared to the digital readout of the power on the K3 (the external meter is an LP-100A). All other bands show good power output. [Elecraft] Interesting KPA100 partial power control loss
Good evening all, K2/100 #5822 started yesterday producing nearly double the requested power. Below 10W fine. 50W requested gave about 100W and max power was approaching 160W on lower bands!! I searched the reflector archive to confirm my memory of posts on the problem over the years. As suggested by Don W3FPR in the past, I replaced D16-17 with 1N4148 diodes to see what happened before delving further, fearing damage to U5 or U6. On reassembly the problem was fixed! I checked the removed 1N5711's with a Peak DCA55 and both appeared normal (low voltage test only I suppose). Have been playing with a kit built Linear Amp Ranger (572B) recently (circuit similar to Ameritron AL-811HD) and I am suspicious that on powering down the heavy toroidal mains transformer may be producing a small 'EMP' since occasionally it freezes up a nearly G4 iMac. The antenna is either disconnected or switched to a dummy load when off- air. No recent thunderstorm activity here - midwinter. Does anyone have any ideas on how to reduce this turn-off spike, in case this is the cause? All gear is fed from UK 240V mains via surge protected power outlets. Meanwhile I will be even more vigilant with antenna disconnection and grounding. 73, Ted G7BQM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I am on 28.8 dial up so cannot load a new Adobe etc. Appreciate any help.. thanks.. 73 Merv KH7C __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Ask a favor
Wonder if I could ask a favor of someone on the list, I am installing the upgrade DSP board today and would like to do the IF output mod. the Extreme signal mod, and the VFO noise mod. Does anyone have these PDF downloaded and they can send them to me in an attachment? Main DSP Board Rev. D now includes a hardware LPF circuit in the audio receive path. Roy Morris W4WFB" Here's a summary: The Main DSP Board (Rev. D) does three things that are independent of EQ settings and contrary to other opinions, do in fact make measured improvements to Tx and Rx audio response: 1) The new low-pass audio filter in the Rx path attenuates undesirable artifacts above approximately 4 kHz; 2) The headphone low frequency response is improved when using low Z headphone types (e.g., older 4 or 8-ohm) through a 10X increase in coupling capacitor value; and 3) Mic and Line-In low audio response is improved through the re-scaling of several components. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Freq. Stability
Thanks to all who helped me work out this problem. I replaced all the BFO components (thanks to Elecraft for sending me the parts at no charge). Now from a cold start at 16C to steady operating temp at 20C, the K2 drifts about 50Hz, well withing spec. In the end, I think the problem was with L33. My original L33 was not wound as carefully as the replacement, and had a couple fewer turns. But who knows. Interestingly, when I reassembled all the BFO components, the K2 did not pass the BFO range test. I reflowed solder, removed L33 and examined it closely, put L33 back in... tried various things to no avail. But then, something I did solved the problem and the oscillator worked fine. Gremlins (or poor soldering). Hope it doesn't revert back to its failed state. Anyway, thanks to all who replied. And, for the record, a properly assembled K2 starting at 16C running up to 20C still meets the published drift specs. I struggled with this problem for quite a while, spent *a lot* of time working it out, and will admit to becoming more than a little frustrated and disillusioned with my K2. But my experience epitomizes the difference between buying and running a stock radio, and building and trouble shooting your own work. If all you want to do is work stations, a K2 is probably not for you; if you enjoy radio more broadly, then the K2 is ideal. [Elecraft] New K3 DSP Board
If the new DSP board does not improve the low frequency response in receive audio unless the bandpass is adjusted as some have suggested, I wonder what it is intended to do. Is it supposed to improve the low frequency transmitted audio? What can the new DSP board do that the TX EQ and RX EQ in the MAIN menu not do?
