Re: [Elecraft] Programming language and tools used by Elecraft and other for PIC programming - OT

2010-02-27 Thread AD6XY

What I would find most useful is a code in a PIC that decodes K2 auxbus
commands to set an output pin according to the selected band. A bit like a
KRC2 but embedded. Then I could build my own
transverters/amplifiers/switches. I realise auxbus is proprietary so the PIC
would have to come ready programmed.

Eeh you wos lucky, we had 't toggle boot strap in't PDP 11/05 in Octal on front
panel to even get Assembler!

I kid you not.
Digital PDP 11/05 with Teletype. On power up, I used to load a bootstrap
program of about 20 instructions with switches (0 or 1) on the front panel, so
it would read a machine code loader (this was a 16 bit m/c and the code was
written as a series of Octal lines, 1 per instruction, on a crib card).

Then you could run the machine code, via another short instruction, so it would
recognise the TT.
Then you could load the BASAC (yes not BASIC, but a Solatron version called
BASAC) interpreter written in Assembler into the CPU.

After that, you were cooking on gas, could load ASCII tapes of programs etc.

When was this?
Circa 1975!

[Elecraft] Power supply voltage reading different than K3 reading

2010-02-27 Thread 4Z5TO

Picking nits here, everything is within spec but...

I just received an Astron power supply. Out of curiosity I was looking at
the voltage readout on the K3 and noticed it was at 14.7 VDC. I adjust the
Astron to 13.8 VDC and looked at the K3 and noticed a difference in the
voltaged, I would have suspected a lower reading NOT a higher reading. So
checked my other ps. anyway...

Astron SS-25 @ 13.80VDC: K3 reading 14.0 VDC
Gamma HPS1-a @ 13.49VDC: K3 reading 13.7 VDC

What's going on here? I tend to trust my DMM, although...

How do I and/or should I adjust the K3 readout to actually reflect what it
is receiving at the AP connectors?

I have not checked the Amps.

[Elecraft] [OT] - Spectrogram software for Linux

2010-02-27 Thread Joe Planisky
As has been mentioned several times recently, audio spectrum analysis
software can be very useful for aligning the filters in a K2 and for
lots of other purposes as well. Spectrogram is frequently mentioned
as a good program for Windows.

For those of us who run some variant of GNU Linux, the Baudline
program (available as a free download at http://www.baudline.com)
provides much the same functionality. I've been using it for several
months now and find it fast, very powerful, and easy to use once you
get the hang of the somewhat different user interface (you WILL have
to read the manual.) The manual is well written and easy to
understand if you have some familiarity with sampling and basic signal
analysis concepts.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - N1MM and RTTY - DATA/DATA A OR USB mode ?????

2010-02-27 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

N1MM shows PSK mode on top of the logging window when the K3
is in Data A mode but seems to transmit RTTY OK.

Depends on what you have set in the Mode Control tab of
the N1MM Logger configuration dialog. I generally set
RTTY to RTTY for FSK and set PSK to PSK (DATA A) for PSK.

If you want to use AFSK for RTTY, I would set RTTY to AFSK
and use AFSK A as the data mode in the K3.

The only way the data mode matters to N1MM Logger is what
it records in the log. If you set N1MM to record contest
mode, it won't care what the radio mode is.

[Elecraft] KIO2 - DS cmd shortcoming

2010-02-27 Thread Mike Markowski
I'm writing some code to work with the KDSP2 and have run into what I
believe is a shortcoming in the DS command.

When moving into kdsp2 menus where two numbers can be modified (e.g.,
filter, nr, nt settings) a flashing decimal point indicates which of the
two numbers will be edited. However, there seems to be no way from the
DS command to determine if a decimal point is flashing.

Have I overlooked any way of finding this out?

Thanks!

I learned about these headphones from earlier enthusiastic posts on the
Elecraft reflector. The isolation and fidelity they deliver is
extraordinary. They have lived up to all my expectations but now are excess
to my needs because of the present of a Heil Pro-Set Plus headset from my

[Elecraft] laptop digital interface (Mac specific query)

2010-02-27 Thread Lew Phelps K6LMP
I own a MacBook Pro laptop -- current vintage, which means it has only one
audio port. It's a 3.5mm jack that is designed to interface with the headset
plug on Apple's earbuds plus throat mike headset. The plug on the Apple
headset has a tip plus THREE rings, rather than the usual two for a 3.5mm
stereo headset jack. The 3.5mm jack on the Mac (the Audio Port) is supported
by firmware/software that seems to detect when a plug is inserted that has less
than a tip plus three rings. If I insert a standard 3.5mm stereo headset plug
into the Audio Port and select Use Audio Port for Sound Output in Sound
Preference, sound indeed flows to the headset. If I connect the K3 Line Out
jack to the Audio Port on the Mac and select Use Audio Port for Sound Input
in Sound Preferences, I get good quality sound input (verified by recording a
QSO overheard on 40 meters) with sound recording software on the Mac). If I
insert the Apple headset into the headset jack, Sound Preferences re
cognizes that it has both an external microphone and Headphones connected
to the Built in Input and Built in Output (respectively), which is of
course the single Audio Port jack on the MacBook Pro.

I've been working to set up my Mac for digital work with my K3 using an iMic
USB interface. Now, however, it has occurred to me that, since the Line In and
Line Out jacks on the K3 are equipped with isolation transformers, I ought be
able to modify an Apple headset to interface between the K3 and Mac. To do
this, I think that all I would have to do is cut the Apple headset apart. I'd
connect a 3.5mm mono plug to the wires that goes to the throat mike, and a
3.5mm stereo plug to the wires that go to the left and right earbuds. I'd
insert the mono plug into the K3 Line In jack, and the stereo plug into the
Line Out jack. The other end of the cable (with the Apple four-conductor
configuration) would go into the Mac Audio Port. If I have it right, the Mac
would think it was hooked up to a standard Apple headset, and the K3 would
think it was hooked up with separate audio lines to Line IN and Line OUT

Is there any reason that this wouldn't work?

Even more importantly, is there any reason that I shouldn't even TRY to make it
work? (That is, would I be running the risk of damaging either the K3 or the
Mac by putting voltage where it ought not to be). I have confirmed that I can
input sound from the K3 to the Mac with a stereo cable connecting the K3 Line
Out jack to the Mac headphone jack. I can't think of a way to verify that the
sound output, which is at an appropriate level to drive headphones, would
properly drive Line IN on the K3. But it seems to me that, worst case, the
signal just isn't strong enough.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this slightly whacko idea.

Re: [Elecraft] laptop digital interface (Mac specific query)

2010-02-27 Thread David Christ
Well, I was in somewhat the same position and decided to take the
easy way out. I bought a SignaLink USB. I plugged the USB into the
Mac and the other cable into the K3. No drivers to be loaded or
anything. Seems to work just fine.

Others on the list may be able to tell you what the downside of this
is, but it works for me.

I own a MacBook Pro laptop -- current vintage, which means it has

rings, rather than the usual two for a 3.5mm stereo headset jack.
The 3.5mm jack on the Mac (the Audio Port) is supported by
firmware/software that seems to detect when a plug is inserted that
has less than a tip plus three rings. If I insert a standard 3.5mm
stereo headset plug into the Audio Port and select Use Audio Port
for Sound Output in Sound Preference, sound indeed flows to the
headset. If I connect the K3 Line Out jack to the Audio Port on the
Mac and select Use Audio Port for Sound Input in Sound
Preferences, I get good quality sound input (verified by recording a
QSO overheard on 40 meters) with sound recording software on the
Mac). If I insert the Apple headset into the headset jack, Sound
Preferences re
cognizes that it has both an external microphone and Headphones
connected to the Built in Input and Built in Output
(respectively), which is of course the single Audio Port jack on the
MacBook Pro.

I've been working to set up my Mac for digital work with my K3 using
an iMic USB interface. Now, however, it has occurred to me that,
since the Line In and Line Out jacks on the K3 are equipped with
isolation transformers, I ought be able to modify an Apple headset
to interface between the K3 and Mac. To do this, I think that all I
would have to do is cut the Apple headset apart. I'd connect a 3.5mm
mono plug to the wires that goes to the throat mike, and a 3.5mm
stereo plug to the wires that go to the left and right earbuds. I'd
insert the mono plug into the K3 Line In jack, and the stereo plug
into the Line Out jack. The other end of the cable (with the Apple
four-conductor configuration) would go into the Mac Audio Port. If I
have it right, the Mac would think it was hooked up to a standard
Apple headset, and the K3 would think it was hooked up with separate
audio lines to Line IN and Line OUT

Is there any reason that this wouldn't work?

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2010-02-27 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
The week has been rather good. I have spent much of it at the bench working
on circuits and a little software. One of these days my web site will go live.
I took a good hike on the semi-dry terrain before the clouds broke and the
rain returned. The nearby stream is very low; I doubt it will last more than a
few weeks after the dry season returns. At least the ferns and bryophytes are
happy. The cedars love having their feet wet and grow quite large near or in
the stream. I found an odd sight: a cedar and a hemlock so mooshed together I
am sure there was little bark between them. I know trees of similar species
can share vascular systems but I truly doubt this disparate couple could.
The bands were happy this week. Both fox hunts were not too tough, at least
into Oregon. I moved one rig into the front room and put it on my bench. Two
antennas also made the move so I can monitor the bands while I work. I got to
hear some SWBC stations so I can get the news of the world without getting on
the Internet. This setup is also useful to monitor how the bands are working.
However, when I tried to listen to 41 meters all I got was SSB. I had
forgotten the SWBC stations there had moved :) I am happy the sun is awakening
nicely. It has been a long winter, now for spring.

Please join us tomorrow evening.

[Elecraft] K2 - Poor Audio Reports

2010-02-27 Thread David Heinsohn
On 160 mtrs, SSB as I move up the band I begin to get poor audio reports
at about 1.900mhz. The tuner is showing less than a 2:1 swr at that
point and I retune often as I move up. The antenna is a dipole centered
on 1.825mhz. Other than adding a shorter element to the dipole, any
ideas what I need to do to fix the problem? Any ideas why I'm getting
the poor audio reports?

Thanks,

David

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Poor Audio Reports

Logic tells me to first hook the K2 to a dummy load and listen to yourself
in another receiver. That should tell you a lot.

[Elecraft] [K3] LED brightness

2010-02-27 Thread Al Lorona
Question for K3 owners: Do you find that the setting of your LED brightness has
an effect on the level of high frequency audio artifacts heard? i. e. LED BRT =
8 corresponds to louder audio tones?

Note that I am NOT trying to re-open an old topic, only trying to determine a
correlation between two states.

[Elecraft] K3 DSP Board Testing Procedure

2010-02-27 Thread Oliver Sweningsen
Does anyone have side-by-side test results from old and new DSP boards? Or,
can someone suggest a good test procedure to quantify low frequency
performance improvement? I have one modified and one unmodified K3 and plan
to run some tests.

Would be interesting!

Beats me why Elecraft can´t present the facts, I´m sure
they have measured since I bet they know how to.
