[Elecraft] 30m DX report with KX1 and K3

2010-04-09 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr WA5ZNU
I took my KX1 outside to see if I could track down a router-ish noise on
20m, and when I couldn't I switched to 30M as I was using a 30M MFJ
short loaded whip. I heard SM4OTI booming in. I put the KX1 on top of
the car for ground and gave Steve a call, but no joy. I came inside and
got an "QRZ 5N" answer with 5W from my K3 and SteppIR short dipole, and
completed the QSO with 25W.

So maybe the solar flare is clearing!

Re: [Elecraft] Prolific drivers and Mac OS

2010-04-09 Thread Alan Bloom
In my experience, often the primary source of computer RFI is the router
and the cables connected to it. I have to turn off my router and modem
if I want to operate on HF from the same room as the computer. No
problem with the computer itself.

Re: [Elecraft] Prolific drivers and Mac OS

2010-04-09 Thread Bob McGraw - K4TAX
Largely the issue of RFI can be more related to antenna location and the
radio/computer location. The closer the two are the more problems are
likely to arise. The signal strength at a specific location is defined by
the inverse square law. Double the distance and the RF field decreases by a
factor of 4.

I realize that some must use indoor antennas. In this case, RFI is a tough
solution. Common mode chokes on every cable, both ends, is likely a must.
Keep cables as short as practical. Make sure all pieces of equipment are
bonded together and I don't suggest just relying on the shield or drain in
the cables to accomplish this task. If one needs a ground between two
pieces of equipment, then one must run a wire between the two. Do not daisy
chain pieces of equipment together. Establish a common point such as the
power supply case ground terminal {it does have one doesn't it?} and each
piece of equipment. The power supply ground terminal should end up with a
number of ground connections where each piece of equipment will only have
one ground connection.

I make my ground jumpers from #10 or #12 primary auto wire, crimp a good
quality VACO terminal on the ends and then solder the terminals. Crimping
is only good for the mechanical connection and does not provide a reliable
low resistance connection.

Once done and the station is clean, one might be surprised to find that many
of the birdies are no longer heard or are of much lower level too.

George,

I trust you meant QSO instead of QSL - the cards come after the contact.

:-)

Check the menu for MIC SEL when the K3 is in DATA A mode. If it is set
to anything other than LINE IN, it will not work from the Line In input.

Once you have set the microphone select menu correctly, go into TX TEST
(so not RF is generated) and set the controls - either the K3 "MIC" knob

and/or the computer soundcard output to indicate between 4 and 5 bars on

the K3 ALC display.

Once you have that level setup correctly, go ahead and transmit (not in
TX TEST) - you should have RF output. Listen on another receiver if you

have any doubts.

Sounds like yours is broken (or your meter is!). Check the fuse, as
George suggested.

Not sure what you mean by "AVI jacks"? If you're referring to a
connector to mate with the K3 "ACC", it's a standard HD15, as used for
VGA monitor connections. Something like Mouser #806-K86X-EA-15P-30
should work. I've bought mine from the local Fry's recently...

[Elecraft] PSK31 setup

2010-04-09 Thread George A. Thornton
Last night I started setting up PSK31 using HRD and DM780.

I am using an older Lenovo T60p computer in a port replicator, running
Windows 7. I made direct connections using 1/8 stereo audio plugs
between the line in-out connectors on the K3. The line out goes to the
microphone input in the laptop, and the headphones output on the laptop
goes to the line in on the K3.

I have things running apparently properly on receive. I have had no
problems working the waterfall to find and decode signals.

I have also verified that on transmit the program does go through all
the motions and does put the K3 into transmit mode.

I have not however been able to get a QSL from anyone yet. I suspect
there is something obvious that I have forgotten that needs to be done
in order for the transmit to work properly.

I do have the radio in Data and set to Data A.

I am sure I will feel stupid when someone tells me what I am doing
wrong. But, since none of you know me personally I am brave enough to
take the risk.

Re: [Elecraft] Second receiver options ??

2010-04-09 Thread Richard Zwirko
Chuck,
In his response to your KRX3 vs LP-PAN question, Tom, W8JI, mentioned
the advantages of diversity reception by adding the KRX3 to your K3. I use
this feature very often of the lower 3 HF bands and strongly second this
recommendation . Using the KRX3 sub receiver in my K3 with a second receive
antenna, it's amazing to hear audio fading down and out in one ear while
fading up in the other ear with the result being perfect copy.

But another plus from installing the KRX3 sub receiver module is being able
to simultaneously monitor a second frequency. If you chase DX stations, you
know that many of them run split operation, listening to a known range of
frequencies. By monitoring your transmit frequency, if a loud competing
signal is heard on it, you can quickly and easily move the 'B' VFO to a
better TX frequency. Transmitting on a clearer frequency will often improve
chances of working the DX station.

If I had to make the exclusive choice between the KRX3 and LP-PAN I would
choose the sub receiver module. I believe it improves chances of working DX
over what the LP-PAN could do. That's not to say that the LP-PAN features
won't soon be added to my K3.

Rich - K1HTV

Hello guys.

I've been using my K3 about a month now and really enjoying it. Since I have
a keen interest in DXing and pulling out weak signals (DXing cw & ragchewing
cw) I'm starting to think about adding the KRX3 second receiver although I
understand that LP-PAN also provides second receiver capability.

I also understand that true K3 'diversity reception' greatly aids weak sig
copy and would only be available with the KRX3 receiver but not with LP-PAN.

Additionally, I use an older, slower desktop for playing radio and would
probably need to a better pc if i go the LP-PAN route, plus the soundcard,
and then the unit itself.

So if you had enough funds for either the KRX3 second receiver or the LPAN
which would you choose. I'm leaning toward the KRX3 but wanted to get the
experts' take on this as well.

Seems that the visual aspect of LP-PAN, while appealing, would be less
beneficial basd on my operating than the diversity reception.

Is that making sense?

thanks and 73.

Re: [Elecraft] Using the 12v OUT Jack

2010-04-09 Thread George & Jan
I am using the 1/10/08 schematics - it shows a fuse (F2 - 0.6A) for the aux

Out should have voltage.

I'd suggest checking F2 first.

[Elecraft] Using the 12v OUT Jack

2010-04-09 Thread Edward Cole
There is no voltage on the jack - so how do you turn it on?
page 17 says: "provides up to 0.5 A (switched) for use with accessory
devices."
Index refers you to page 17
I looked thru the MAIN and CONFIG menus and found nothing to turn on 12v OUT.
No voltage by just turning on the radio
I am trying to power my 6m preamp from this jack as I cannot see
spending $35 for a special plug for the ACC jack.
BTW good luck in finding AVI jacks (not listed by DigiKey or
Mouser). I see some sub-D jacks that look like one.
Radio Shack is useless as source for "anything"
I hope someone knows the solution to the missing voltage at the 12v OUT jack

Make sure you have the correct antenna selected. Also check and see if the
RX antenna is selected by mistake. If you don't have an RX antenna, you get
the symptoms described. DAMHIK :)

More importantly, you want to make sure that none of the (usually
unused by VGA) pins are shorted to the shield. The cablewholesale.com
one qualifies...

Don't know about the other one mentioned... but suspect it's OK too,

Re: [Elecraft] EQ per mode?

2010-04-09 Thread Dick Dievendorff
You can set up a few (admittedly not too many) K3 macros containing EQ value
settings using the TE command and have them available from the front panel
of your K3 with a couple of switch presses. See the second CUT LO example
at the bottom of the Command Tester/K3 Macros page in K3 Utility Help
(version 1.3.4.3, new on the Elecraft web site yesterday).

Re: [Elecraft] Prolific drivers and Mac OS

2010-04-09 Thread lstavenhagen

As I've said to others privately, it's most likely my indoor antenna. So I'm
likely just complaining with the solution already in hand hi hi. Because I
live in apts., I've always been restricted to indoor ants so this goes back
a long ways even back into my PC days.

That said, my macbook pro (the newest generation with the one piece Al
shell) is somewhat quieter than my couple generations old macbook with the
plastic case. That thing really rips up the rigs.

The fix would clearly be to buy a house and put up a good outside ant., a
solution thats far far outside my budget hi hi. Meanwhile, the workaround
will probably be to just use the built-in decoder/encoder in the K3 for
digital modes.

But like I said, I'm having no software problems at all, even the demo of
MacLoggerDX works great with my Bill-n-Ted's Excellent adapter and
cocoaModem similarly with the audio cables.

I might schlep the K3 out portable once with my laptop and just get the ant
as far away from the rig as I can to troubleshoot that aspect of it.

2010-04-09 Thread K6LE
Wow! what Mac are you using?

I have my iMac (2008 2.8 GHz C2D ) sitting next to my K3 and it is on all the
time.

The only noises in the radio that I have experienced are:

A slight hum in the Line In - probably caused by them not being on the same
plug and/or not bonded together. Solved it with one of the audio isolators
that Radio Shack sells for about $15. Will work on the grounding later.

I get birdies from the ethernet cable - solved by disconnecting it and using
Wi-Fi.

I hear some nasty birdies from my networked laser printer - I just turn it off
when not using it.

Other than those solved problems I don't have any interference between the Mac
and the K3.

I don't know how I could operate "computerless" these days!

2010-04-09 Thread Julian, G4ILO

The latest beta firmware has separate EQ for CW. I would like to have it for
all modes as well, not that I use AM, but for FM RX I certainly don't want
the treble roll-off I prefer on SSB and CW.

There is also a new command to set TX EQ programmatically. I suspect that
those who want multiple EQ settings per mode will need to use a software
application for this.

Re: [Elecraft] Prolific drivers and Mac OS

2010-04-09 Thread lstavenhagen

Well, for what it's worth, I'm still trying to get over my prejudice that
computers and HF rigs don't mix but that's going with extreme difficulty
recently hi hi. I've been experimenting with grounding schemes, chokes and
so on with exasperating results with my macs and the K3. At this point,
totally ironically, the only thing useful involving a wire between the
computer and the rig has been my USB->RS-232 adapter to run the K3 utility.
Everything else involves too much RFI to be able to use the rig/computer for
any intended purpose and the cables always seem to hop back out of the rig
and back into the storage boxes.
Maybe a Faraday cage around the computer would be the next thing to try.
Moving to a location where I can put up a real antenna a long ways from the
rig would probably help too, but that's impractical right now hi hi.

So I've about thrown in the towel on this (again) hi hi and am about to
surrender and just go back to computerless HF ops. The K3's built-in
PSK/RTTY decoder/encoder works surprisingly well now that I'm learning how
to use it and I need to practice my CW sending anyway.

As for the prolific drivers on MacOS X, the 32 bit releases work great with
no problems using my Bill-n-Ted's Excellent adapter from BestBuy. I havn't
worked on the apparent problem with the recent 64 bit version, tho, because
the 32 versions already work fine. And the error messages I get when trying
to load it suggest it's a perms thing and not a problem with the driver
itself.

PS, I did try this with the non-commercial version of MacLoggerDX and
everything I tried out with it also worked perfectly with no problems. I
just couldn't hear any signals because of the noise hi hi.

Re: [Elecraft] Second receiver options ??

2010-04-09 Thread Tom W8JI
Chuck,

LP Pan mostly is a spot and click assist to operating, it
really will not be a better or different second signal
channel than the K3's audio. There is, of course, no weak
signal diversity improvement from running LP Pan in one ear
and the K3 in the other.

Stereo diversity reception that allows significantly
enhanced weak signals requires significantly different
antennas for each receiver input and also requires nearly
exact duplicates of phase, signal processing time delay, and
bandwidth in both receiver channels for maximum effect.
Average signal-to-noise of the desired signal on both
antennas also has to be about the same for maximum effect.
It does no good to combine mostly noise from one ear with
signal and some noise from the other.

There is a little improvement from antennas on each channel
being different in polarization when spacing is close, but
by far the most significant improvement occurs when the
receiving antennas are a fairly large distance apart in
wavelengths. Keep in mind "polarization" does not mean the
physical layout of the antenna, but rather the actual
response. For example my Beverages, although long horizontal
wires, have only vertical polarization in the front lobes.
If I diversity pair a Beverage with a vertical array, they
must have large spatial separation (over 1 wavelength) or
enhancement is far from optimum.

Another use of stereo is filling in holes in receiving
directional patterns, like listen west and northeast at the
same time using two different directional patterns.

Just wondering: is EQ-per-mode still on the list?

Since K3 has also found use for AM-sync BC and VHF FM, different settings
per mode would be even more welcome.

Some time ago I had the impression it was quite high on The List :-)
