[Elecraft] K3 ATU
The ATU has started to behave strangely since I upgraded to the latest firmware. Most times when I start keying after a QSY, there is the click of a relay then the ATU icon goes off momentarily and then returns. Anyone else experiencing this issue ? [Elecraft] Antenna Switching with KRC2 Six Mtr
With the K3 radio and KRC2 band decoder controller is there a way to assign one of my antennas to the Six Meter band? I only see in the KRC-2 where band decoding is 160 through 10 meters. Can perhaps one of the XV1 or AC1 source driver relays be made to select a Six meter antenna? Re: [Elecraft] K3 ATU
This functionality has been in the radio since firmware release 3.03 on March 17th of 2009. Essentially the radio keeps memories of the ATU settings. The spacing of these memories are different depending on what band you're in... 160 - every 10kc 80 through 12 - every 20kc 10 - 50kc 6 - 200kc So in spacings of those whenever you tune your antenna the radio will look for a new value. If it finds something new that value is written into a memory for that segment of the band. So then if you QSY from one band segment to another as soon as you TX the radio will recall your previous tune settings automatically. The blinking of the ATU icon simply tells you that you just loaded a new set of L-C parameters into the ATU. These settings are stored per band and per antenna. Keep in mind that not only are the memories stored that way but the state of the ATU is stored that way. So if you have a resonant antenna on a specific band and a specific antenna port you can have the radio disable the ATU there and it will remember that. However if its not resonant the K3 will remember its tuning across that band and keep things at a low SWR even on very fairly high Q antennas. ~Brett (N7MG) (Previously KC7OTG) On Sun, 2010-05-30 at 07:10 +, Barry Simpson wrote: The ATU has started to behave strangely since I upgraded to the latest firmware. [Elecraft] K2/100 Distortion on 80M
I would like some help please, I have a K2/100 Ser# 6459 which is transmitting distorted audio on 80 metres only at all power levels, also the volume level of the transmitted audio as monitored on another receiver varies in a random manner. These tests were carried out using a dummy load with only the PSU and dummy load connected. Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 Distortion on 80M
Barry, There is nothing unique to 80 meters in the K2 that should create distortion on only that band, so I would not suspect the bandpass filter. One thing you might try first is to tuck the KPA100 ribbon cable and speaker wire up into the upper corner of the control board, and as far away from the KSB2 as possible. Remove the right side panel and you can easily position the excess cable. When using a separate receiver for monitoring, shorten the receiver's antenna (use a short piece of wire) to limit the strength of the signal to an S-9 level - it is easy to get too much signal into the receiver and overload it, and that condition could occur more readily on a specific band. 73, Don W3FPR Barry Middleton wrote: I would like some help please, I have a K2/100 Ser# 6459 which is transmitting distorted audio on 80 metres only at all power levels, also the volume level of the transmitted audio as monitored on another receiver varies in a random manner. [Elecraft] K2 #6950 - Alignment 2, VCO and BFO issues
I went through the trouble shooting list here in the back of the manual and found my VCO output (pin 3 of U3) to fluctuate between .08-1.33v. Also, the BFO output (pin 6 of U11) shows .136-.2v. Both measurements were done with a DMM and the probe kit. Any ideas? With Alignment II my PLL Reference high freq is 12003.17 and the low freq is 11990.48, range = 12.69. The BFO freqs are: high=4916.87, low=4912.16, range=2.71. Another quick question about adjusting C22 using another radio - I turned C22 both directions and found it would peak the sidetone frequency/intensity heard on the radio at one point and either direction beyond that the tone and volume dropped off. I went counter clockwise, using headphones, until I couldn't hear any tone and bounced between LSB and USB to make sure I couldn't hear anything (low freq rumble) in either mode. Did I do this correctly? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 fan noise, part XXLIV
I have to agree with the idea that this is about ears. At one time in my youth I could hear the 15k whine from a TV horizontal flyback transformer if a TV was on in the room. The sound was part of the TV and I had to listen to it to watch TV. It was clear, and loud. I could clearly hear harmonics probably higher in frequency than that listening to someone play a violin live, as I could listening to a hard strike on a high piano note. But alas, no more, at my age, and I am happy to have as much hearing as I do because my family has a pattern of deafness in old age. I only hear my K3 fans when blowing at the highest setting. But having said that, I must add that EVERY other fan in the house in anything is louder than the K3. The K3's fans are the quietest fans I own. If I still had my youthful easy hearing of the TV sweep frequency, I am sure that I would have heard the 12 kHz artifacts from the K3 that were then an object of complaint, particularly in the sensitive music-oriented wide response stereo phones some use. The artifacts were clearly visible on audio spectrum analysis. I didn't/couldn't hear them. The typical but not universal loss of wide spectrum hearing with age likely accounts for the wide variation in reporting both the 12k artifacts and fan noise. If someone can actually find a fan of the requisite CFM that IS quieter and fits the mounting, it is an easy mod. However I think you are going to have a hard time of it. I spent some time and real money trying to add one more quiet fan to my computer case. Don't believe the ads. Everyone SAYS their fans are quiet. This includes the company that made the fairly quiet fans that came in the case. They all lie. None of the manufacturers appear to be doing quality control. I gave up. I would pay some good money to get a 120 mm computer case fan as quiet as my K3 fans. I remember being down in Mammoth cave when they turned out the lights to experience. I remember being able to hear everyone breathing in the darkness. I also remember getting outdoors afterwards and thinking how loud the wind in the trees was. Those who complain about the K3 fans must indeed be surrounded by a lot of audio that bothers them. I can understand wanting to get Mammoth Cave quiet with things running. Good luck. Those of you with such tender ears (no slight intended), let me know if you ever find a reliable source of 120mm computer case fans that makes you even mildly happy. Or, for that matter, a through the wall air conditioning unit that does not force you to turn up the volume on anything in the room when it comes on. They all advertise their units as quiet. They all lie. As to my K3, number one, I want it COOLED as it transmits. And the roaring blower I have on my CCS 3-1000Z amp is sized to put a constant and high static pressure on the chimney, enough so that the air blown out the top is never HOT, even brick on key. It was a conscious decision to go with airflow over aesthetics: First, 3-1000Z meltdowns interfere with a contest. Second, an expensive pair of Bose noise canceling phones is way cheaper than a 3-1000Z. Facts in context, and priorities. 73, Guy __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] RFI PC Speaker Hum
One thing that I believe has not been mentioned in this thread is a very simple solution to the hum problem. Since the K3 already has an audio power amplifier, amplified speakers are not really needed. I had an old pair of computer speakers - which hummed every time I transmitted on the K3. Then I just disconnected the amplifiers and connected the inputs directly to the speakers. Now I don't need to connect them to their power supply, and they will of course not hum. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391 http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/K2/mod.html LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/RFI-PC-Speaker-Hum-tp5116897p5119339.html Sent from the [HAM] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Note the triband yagi and 80/40m dipoles are hung from a 50-foot tower directly overhead of her sewing-room/office. Interestingly, my Harmon/Kardon computer speakers seem immune to RFI sitting right on the radio desk. My radio room is next to her office? For my ham rigs (K3 and FT-847) I am using an old 1950's era National Radio speaker (10-inch diameter in the 11x11 inch metal speaker cabinet). Both radios internal speakers give too harsh a sound for my ears. I use a Sony MDR-V600 stereo headset and audio from the radios sounds fine with it. 73,, Ed - KL7UW --- Message: 7 Date: Sat, 29 May 2010 19:54:06 - From: Ken Kopp k...@rfwave.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] RFI PC Speaker Hum To: Brian - N5BCN n5...@yahoo.com, elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: c0ddc6e137164f5f8a57962c89eba...@shack Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=iso-8859-1; reply-type=original Hi Brian, It's a more costly solution, but I ... and others ... swear by the COMspkr(s) from West Mountain Radio. [Elecraft] K3, DSP Upgrade
On Tuesday, 5/25, I mailed my DSP board to Elecraft for upgrading. I live on the east coast and on Saturday, 5/29, the upgraded board was in my mail box. USPS priority mail was used for shipping both ways. I finished several other mods and installed the DSP board today. The upgrade mod is well worth the price. The sound from the K3 speaker is now 10 times better than it was before and the lows I can now hear is remarkable. It rivals that from my Sennheiser HD280 headset. The receive EQ is set flat. It took the boys awhile but it looks like they got it right this time! Re: [Elecraft] Buryflex all the way to K3?
I'm doing some rewiring of my shack and the antenna runs. I'm going to order some BuryFlex which will be used as the main runs to both of my antennas. I'm trying to minimize the number and type of connections while doing all this. I don't yet have any BuryFlex as my previous runs were RG213 (Wireman CQ110) so I don't have a feel for its flexibility. RG213 is pretty stiff. I'm wondering if I can bring two BF lines up to the back of the K3/10 or will that be like connecting two anacondas to a church mouse? Jim, two points: 1.) We should always have an entrance bulkhead ground at the building cable entrance that is bonded to the mains ground. This is where 99% of the lightning protection will occur. Why not run a small cable from there to the K3?? 2.) The loss at HF and even lower VHF in barrel connectors or connectors in general is immeasurable without very special methods. There is some bad information on Internet about it and some real wild myths, but the loss in a typical moderate to good PL259-barrel-PL259 is about .05 dB or so at 30 MHz, and less on lower frequencies. When I test connectors here at HF, I actually have to do it thermally with a few kilowatts of power!!! The loss is almost always too low to measure accurately on a $35k network analyzer at HF, even on a PL259/SO-239 combination. Unless you are on UHF or working EME on 144 MHz, there is very little reason to avoid changing cable sizes inside the dwelling. 73 Tom __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Buryflex all the way to K3?
Good choice. My first (and probably last) experience with BuryFlex is that it should have been named SortaFlex. It's pretty stiff compared to Belden 9913F7, which is a dream to work with in comparison. (IMHO, of course. I know some people don't like it.) At HF and 6m, though, ten feet of 8X will be perfect. Re: [Elecraft] K3 dsp rev D hiss audio
I upgraded too and the residual audio hiss level stayed about the same. Hiss bugs me too. The cure is to plug one of these http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102975 in series with your headphones, turn the K3's AF gain to minimum then adjust the adapter's control until the hiss just barely disappears. That will take care of the residual audio hiss. Works with any headphone. P.S.You will need a 1/4 to 1/8 stereo adapter. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3NA on 5 pole vs 8 pole filters
Gents -- I am not sure where the misinformation began that I use 5-pole filters. None of the K3s used by Radio Expeditions, and none of my personal K3 radios, use 5-pole filters (other than the stock filter). My personal filter configuration at the time I bought my radios was: 2.7 kHz stock -- TX 1.8 kHz 8-pole -- forced for all SSB receive (even if DSP is wider), CW, RTTY 1.0 kHz 8-pole -- CW, RTTY 0.4 kHz 8-pole -- CW, RTTY Radio Expeditions also includes 0.25 kHz 8-pole filters to aid in searching for weak signals between strong ones in pileups; e.g., for Ducie Island, when the band was open to Europe and we were trying to find the weak Europeans in between louder signals calling from North America. It is true that I run with AGC=off. I have yet to find a combination of AGC settings that sounds as clear as AGC=off. This strategy isn't for everyone and requires some care and discipline. -- I rarely do casual listening where AGC might even out signal levels for comfortable speaker monitoring. -- I work hard for a very quiet listening environment, so that I can hear 80+ dB of signal dynamic range. With my headphones on, my noise floor is the sound of my own heartbeat and the blood pulsing in my ears, and I adjust the receiver so that the band noise is just above this level. -- I have an attenuator between my in-ear monitors and the radio headphone jack. The K3 audio output amplifier can not deliver a loud enough signal into my in-ear monitors to make me go ouch. The reward of this approach is an extraordinary clarity to signals, and no residual gain reductions caused by static crashes or loud signals hanging the AGC. [Bill W4ZV is correct: there is still gain control in front of the A/D converter that cannot be disabled.] 73, -- Eric K3NA on 2010 May 28 15:23 Ed Muns said the following: Ed Muns, W0YK wrote: Keep in mind that Eric (K3NA) typically operates with AGC off, especially in the presence of strong signals. Bill Tippett, W4ZV, replied: True but AGC Off only applies to the digital (DSP) AGC. Hardware AGC is always on (to protect the DSP) and therefore is subject to blocking, even if AGC is set to Off. Ah, right ... fuzzy thinking. Radio Expeditions, Inc. may have a lot of 5-pole filters to swap out before the next trip, hi! [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for May 30th 31st, 2010
Good Evening, Gradually the database is coming back together. About one more year of reports to enter to get back to where I was. Hopefully I will get all the information I had back into it. I am still gathering the serial numbers. This week there is only one gap. When I get everything entered I will go back to listing the check in count for each operator. Right now the numbers are in disarray since there is a big gap in the middle. WPX was active but not too difficult to avoid to find a working spot for both nets. Conditions were not good but good enough to get some of you. Twenty meters was weak while forty meters was weak and noisy. Viewing Space Weather shows a number of new sunspots popping up. There were aurora sightings in Wisconsin so they got somewhat lower than they have been lately. I need a chance to do some maintenance on the stove and chimney. Caulking the doors would make it much more efficient again. Hopefully there will be a few warm days in June so I can get that chore finished. My front yard has two deer munching on the grass. They look in the window every once in a while to see what I am doing but don't mind me moving about. The ferns have shot up over the last couple days. Now they are starting to unroll. I am ready for a sunny and warm day. It would be nice to sit on the deck and just soak up some sun or read a book. Maybe some Umberto Eco or Muriel Barbery’s “The Elegance of the Hedgehog. [Elecraft] K2 VFO problems
Hello all, I have finally gotten my K2 up and running on all bands. What started happening during the final assembly IE speaker installation and top install, is that I cannot change frequencies after a short warmup, and sometimes from a cold startup. Sometimes spinning the VFO knob made it work for a short time. I had no problem like this during my search for low power out on 80 and 15 meters. (I found I had reversed two capacitors on those two bands.) I suspect a cold solder joint somewhere on the front panel board. Any other location suggestions are surely welcomed. I did remove and inspect the front panel board and reworked those joints looking suspicious but it did not help. Thanks in advance for your input. 73 Dan af4lb __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
