Re: [Elecraft] K3: Hears stations twice
Elecraft is on vacation so here's something to try in the mean time: Does it happen with all filters, if you have more than one quartz crystal filter? What are your filter center and bandwidth settings for the filters it happens on? Have you performed the filter offset calibration from Appendix A? [Elecraft] K3: Hears stations twice
Elecrafters, i tune across 80m and hear UN8GV calling cq on 3514.5 loud and clear. As I tune further down i hear UN8GV deep in the noise exactly 3 khz below, on 3511.5. Bad TX, i think. But wait ... someone is calling him. After a few minutes, a few stations create a pileup. I can hear each and every station deep in the noise on 3511.5 and loud and clear on 3514.5 . No matter if i use the Main RX only or the Main and SUB. Huh? I tried to duplicate this on different frequencies, with different stations, but no "luck". Anyone has experienced this? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KREF3 External Reference Option
Eugene, An external reference for the K2 would achieve nothing dynamically. The K2 stores its frequency information in EEPROM and retrieves that info during operation. The only time an accurate frequency reference would be a benefit to the K2 is during the dial calibration steps of adjusting the 4 MHz reference oscillator and then running CAL PLL and CAL FIL afterward. See the K2 Dial Calibration article on my website www.w3fpr.com for more information. If the signal were present, the microcontroller would continuously measure (and average) the frequency of the 49.38 MHz oscillator, obtaining a value to the nearest 1 Hz. [Elecraft] P3 Utility Abends on Mac OS X
I just completed the assembly of my P3 serial number 878 (went together very smoothly!). Connected it to my K3 and powered them on - no problems, nice sharp display on the P3. Prior to doing this, I had gone to the Elecraft web site and downloaded the current Mac OS X version of the P3 Utility, version 1.3.8.25. When I try to run the P3 Utility, I immediately get the following error: "An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. This application must shut down." I am running this on a MacBook Air laptop, with OS X 10.6.5 I've re-booted the computer and still get the error. Elecraft support is deservedly taking a holiday break, so I thought I'd see if anyone on the reflector may have come across the error. Re: [Elecraft] OT: modifying your amp for lower drive requirement
Luckily - most of the world is not the US and gains of over 15dB are legal and common in non-us amplifiers. Modern FETs have much more gain than older devices and it would be quite normal to have 20dB gain from a stage - even after some feedback. There is an interesting design in the latest Dubus for a 1kW 2m amplifier that requires only 5W input. That is tetrode territory. The popular THP 1.2KFX and 1.5KFX amplifiers use a 6dB input attenuator. Bypassing this allows you to drive them with less power under 25W, though it is not encouraged. The attenuator serves a couple of other purposes - it prevents serious over-drive with a 100W rig and it improves the input match. Incidentally - someone said with a 3dB pad the VSWR can't be more than 3:1 - that is only true if the PA does not have a negative impedance or to put it another way, return gain. That can happen when an amplifier takes off. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KREF3 External Reference Option
Great news, I have been waiting for this option ever since my K3 arrived. The method implies the phase noise of the 10MHz reference is not so important - which is useful to know. My high spec reference is 5MHz and my cheap one 10MHz. The 10MHz will have worse phase noise than the TCXO in the K3 - though at the low frequencies it is not such an issue as it is at VHF and above. The 5MHz one is good - but it takes a long long time to lock. With the count method, it should not matter. Re: [Elecraft] CW question K3
Don, There are a few features of the K3 that might affect this. CW on the K3 normally uses the lower sideband. If you were listening on USB, the CW equivalent would be CW-REV. In SSB modes, the K3's dial displays the suppressed carrier (BFO) frequency. In CW, it displays the actual signal frequency, which is offset from the BFO frequency by an amount equal to the sidetone pitch you have selected. For example, if you were listening to a CW signal in USB mode with the radio's dial set to 14010.00 kHz, then to hear the same CW signal in CW-REV mode with your PITCH setting at 600 Hz, you would set the dial to 14010.60 kHz. You could also listen to the same signal in CW instead of CW-REV, but unless the signal was zero-beat to your sidetone, you would hear it at a different pitch (pitches above 600 Hz in USB would be below 600 Hz in CW mode, and vice versa). On the other hand, if you were listening in LSB mode with the dial set to 14010.00 kHz, then to listen to the same signal in CW mode (or CW-REV with possibly altered pitch) you would change the dial setting to 14009.40 kHz. There is a configuration option to automate offsetting of the dial frequency when you switch between CW and SSB modes: select CONFIG:CW WGHT and tap the 5 button to switch between normal (dial setting does not change when you change modes) and offset (dial setting changes so you can listen uninterrupted to the same signal) modes. If you are using software to decode CW, you should also be aware that when the K3 transmits CW, it always does so with an offset equal to the selected sidetone PITCH, regardless of where your software is decoding. In other words, if your PITCH setting is 600 Hz, then to receive on the same frequency you are transmitting on, you must tune your radio so that the signal you are listening to has an audio pitch of 600 Hz, the same as the sidetone pitch. The K3 has tuning aids to help zero-beat CW signals (CWT and SPOT). 73, Rich VE3KI On Fri, Dec 24, 2010 at 2:00 PM, gold...@charter.net wrote: > I am trying to set up to listen to CW on the K3 using software to help > decode messages. > > The question that I have is why can I hear the CW in USB (20M) fine > and nothing when I go to CW mode. > > I have looked in the manual and other references but nothing makes > sense to me. > > Merry Christmas > > Don > KD8NNU > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] That Little battery in the K2 # 01264
On the K2 the only such battery in the K2 is the real-time clock battery. The clock is part of the DSP option. That should NOT cause distorted audio, of course, if it was just resting on the speaker magnet (and not touching the paper speaker cone). I believe Andrew is thinking of the speaker mount in the K2/10 when he warned about not over-tightening the speaker screws. That is very critical, but the speaker mount in the KPA100 doesn't have that issue. However, starting with the bad news first, it is quite possible that the bump that dislodged the battery damaged the speaker by bending its frame. That speaker has a fairly soft metal frame holding a fairly heavy magnet. I've seen an number of instances (including with my own K2) where just the bumping and banging of the speaker alone in its box before the radio was assembled was enough to deform the frame and cause the voice coil to run against the magnet and cause a buzz or fuzzy audio. It's that tendency of the frame to bend that caused the issue Andrew wrote about in the QRP K2 when it was installed and the screws tightened too much. Replacing the speaker, or straightening the frame (which is easily done in most cases if it's accessible) require dismantling the whole KPA100 again. One speaker mounting screw is buried under the KPA100 pcb. So let's consider less extreme possibilities first: You can see three of the mounting screws with the side cover removed. Are they in place and does the speaker seem secure and solid against the heat sink where it's mounted? Is anything touching the cone that you can see? Sometimes the little leads running from the speaker terminal strip into the voice coil can get pressed so they are just touching the cone and will cause a buzz when the speaker cone tries to move to reproduce sound. If in doubt, pull then away from the cone slightly. Be very careful reaching in with a thin tool to get the inside wire that you don't puncture the cone. You should be able to see the inner wire in the thin gap between the magnet and the white terminal strip. The cone not really fragile, but a sharp tool can puncture it easily enough. If nothing is touching the cone from the bottom, then the speaker will have to come out. Re: [Elecraft] That little battery in the K2
Phil - you might try loosening and retightening the four screws holding the speaker to the top cover. If you even slightly over-tighten, you can cause distortion to the speaker frame which could cause audio distortion and low audio output. You want to get them just tight enough to not come lose and NO MORE... it's very easy to distort the speaker frame. [Elecraft] That Little battery in the K2 # 01264
I just got my K2 back from Don and Allen... Thank you...Both. But I might have a problem. When I hooked up the rig and listened to 40m and 20m both on SSB the sound coming from the speaker was raspy and distorted. Also it sounded very thin. So I plugged in my AKG 701 headphones...Yes, that was better. But I of course wanted to get to the bottom of the problem...so I unscrewed the left side next to the speaker. Aha! that little flat battery had slipped out of it's holder and was resting on the speaker magnet shield. (No doubt it popped loose in shipping) So my question...What does that battery do? Would it have anything to do with the raspy audio? Can I just put it back in and be good to go? Or am I simply screwed. K2# 01264 Now upgraded with 100 watt amp etc etc. Thank You all for help. Re: [Elecraft] That little battery in the K2
Phil - The battery will be from either the KDSP2 or the KAF2 and is required to keep the RTC up to date. By the way, do you have a callsign? I have searched for your 01264 on the Owners' Database at http://www.zerobeat.net/qrp/elowners.html but am unable to find you on there. You might like to enter your detail there. 73 de David G4DMP In a recent message, Phil Townsend writes > >So my question...What does that battery do? >Would it have anything to do with the raspy audio? >Can I just put it back in and be good to go? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 - Noise over Computer Audio
I recently tried monitoring the audio of the K3 via the soundcard (usually I had this muted). I get one noise when only an audio cable is connected between the K3 and my laptop. This noise is mostly attenuated when I connect the KUSB cable. However, as soon as either N1MM or HRD connects to the K3, I get another set of pulsed noises (I think this is the polling of the K3 data). Each of these noises is eliminated if I connect a ground wire between the K3 chassis and a metal chasis component of my laptop. (Samples below). There is no difference if I change to a different laptop, operate the laptop on AC or battery, change to another USB/COM converter or another audio cable. Since grounding fixes this, it appears to me to be a ground loop. My DVM shows no appreciable impedance between the K3 RS-232 GRND and chassis or the computer USB ground and chassis (I know it only takes a minimal resistance to create the potential for a ground loop). What doesn't make sense to me is why a ground loop would even exist when ONLY the audio cable is connected as the K3 has isolation transformers. Any thoughts as to what may be wrong or how I can remedy this? This makes it rather hard to run my audio through my PC either as a stand alone or when using a logging program linked to the VFO. I'm also affraid that the errant current may cause some damage to the K3 or my laptop. Re: [Elecraft] 100 Watts or 500 Watts
As a recent K3/P3 kit assemblier(4910) and an old timer (licenced in '47). I'm still trying to understand all the nuiances of the K3 operation. Thank you, the Elecraft Reflector, for all the good ideas and help. But as I understand it, the quote of the HF DX'rs is " Life is too short for QRP", 500 Watts. So my New Years and B'Day (79) present next month will be a 2nd hand but good working AL 1500. I really like 8877s. I worked WAS, WAC, VUCC, and 95 DXCCs on 2M with one, using CW. So maybe I'll try a bit of HF for a change with my K3/100. BTW, it should also make and excelent EME transceiver, especially with the purposed extenal 10MHz driven REF Lock module. Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 relay boxes used?
I use the MFJ-4716, 6 port Remote antenna switch. I believe there is also a 4 port switch. This switch is very easy to connect to the KRC2 and works at KW level. Each relais can be activated with 12 V volt from the KRC2. You can make the connection via with RJ45 connector on the back of the MFJ box. It requires a little reverse engineering to figure out which wire activates each port. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Will the K2 noise blanker help with this QRM?
Oh good grief. 3.579 (approx) MHz is the color burst frequency, and pretty much any standard NTSC color TV set (vacuum tube or solid state) has a crystal oscillator that runs on that frequency. The _horizontal_ sweep oscillator is on about 15 kHz, and the _vertical_ sweep oscillator runs at slightly less than 60 Hz. This same 3.579 MHz oscillator is the reason for the persistent weak signal on 14.312 or 14.313 (the 4th harmonic of 3.579) that plagues many of us. Also, many devices use this same 3.579 (more or less) frequency to control some internal function or process - crystal controlled clocks, fax machines, microwave oven timers, and video games being only few examples. TV sets are locked to a particular frequency by the transmission they receive, whereas other devices are not. This is the reason you can often hear many many individual signals around these frequencies - particularly on 20 meters. I am not too sure about more modern HDTV receivers. Hopefully they use a different mechanism,. so perhaps we will see a gradual lessening of this problem as time passes. Or not. - Jim, KL7CC Monty Shultes wrote: > 3580 is a magic frequency, actually 3979.xx is the vertical (horizontal?) > oscillator frequency in OLD tube TV sets.
