[Elecraft] Time-Out Timer

2011-01-20 Thread DL3LSM

Hello,

is there the possibility to set a transmission Time-Out Timer in the K3
(like in the TS-480)? As more and more people use their rigs remotely this
would be nice to have - to limit the transmission to a setable time in case
of a communication error or breakdown...

[Elecraft] K3 Lin Out -- Need a hint for trouble-shooting

2011-01-20 Thread John Ragle
In the last few days I have had the following problem, which cures
itself after the K3 has been on for 10-15 minutes. I am talking about TX
Data mode. For my normal operation, LIN OUT is set at 08 to 10.

*This is the problem: *The receiver and transmitter section appear to
behave normally, signals are received properly, and the gain controls
work properly, but there is no audio on the Lin Out. Using Config -> Lin
Out and resetting the level with VFO A has no effect.

Examining the Lin Out output line via FFT (e.g. as in SpectraVue or
FLDIGI) shows noise at the right level for the first 200-300 Hz from 0,
but a rapid drop-off (to more negative values) of 25-30 dB for the rest
of the passband. This is independent of "BAND." Normally, with the
settings I use, the noise in the first 200-30 Hz is ~ -85 dB on
SpectraVue's scale, with the passband noise around -65 dB. LO is at 0,
HI at 2.95, FC at 1.50, using F1.

The K3 is a K3/100-F Ser. No. 4103, running MCU 04.25, FPF 01.14, DSP1
02.71. It has the ATU and the KXV3A (factory) installed.

[Elecraft] OT: Spectrum defense matters

2011-01-20 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Group,

Thanks for all your reply to me both on the reflector and off-the-list.

I have already been in contact with Mr. David Sumner K1ZZ and briefed him about
my role in the Radio Spectrum Advisory Committee (RSAC) of Hong Kong Government.

Although Hong Kong is small, there are 40 ham societies including the national
radio societies HARTS.  I have been elected by these 40 ham societies as their
representative in the RSAC.  This is reason why I would like to learn more
about
spectrum defense matters from ARRL so as to fulfill my role as the amateur
radio
sector representative in the Hong Kong Government.

Once again, thanks for all your assistance and sorry my QRM in this reflector.
I find Elecraft mail reflector consists of all sorts of expertise and I am
benefited to be a member of this reflector.

A transmission time-out timer is a valuable suggestion. We have a TS-480
and a TS-2000 serving two remote radios here in Boulder, CO. Combined
these radios have provide more than 4 years of remote service. In that
time the transmission time-out timers have terminated transmissions more
than once because the user has lost contact with the radio while
transmitting. In my opinion a transmission time-out timer is not a nice
feature on a radio providing remote service, it is a necessity.

That is one of the big reasons I don’t use my K3 for remote operation and the

The second figure in the right side numbers is the diameter of the hole when
the snapon is closed. Have a look at K9YC's excellent web page on the
characteristics for the ferrite type. #31 is what you want to use for
suppression purposes 160-30 meters.

http://www.mouser.com/catalog/catalogUSD/642/952.pdf

I have ordered some 623-0431176451 because I want to put 5 or 6 turns of
cat5 through them to mitigate some problems with AT&T Uverse, whose VDSL
uses 1-12 MHz baseband. These should put over 1000 ohms of resistive
suppression at 160m. Suppression is hard to come by on 160 and #31 is
superior to the rest. The Fair-rite catalog contains measured suppression
resistance at 1 and 5 MHz. These numbers are not in the Mouser catalog.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Big Ferrite Split Beads @ B.G. Micro

2011-01-20 Thread Craig D. Smith
I'd like to follow up on K2AV's excellent recent post.

Thanks to K9AY's previous work, I also was turned on to the type 31 material
for RF suppression at HF. I have found it to be substantially better than
type 43, especially on the lower bands and for broadband use.

A hint for those of you who are contemplating placing an order for some of
the clamp-ons: The smaller diameter clamp-ons look attractive at first
glance due to their low prices and ability to fit most of the small cables
in your shack. But remember the choking impedance goes with the square of
the number of turns. A more expensive core with a larger aperture will be a
much better bang-for-the-buck. For example, a core that allows 3 turns of a
given cable will be 9 times more effective than a single turn core and might
only cost only 50% more. Needing to use several single turn cores adds up
quickly cost-wise.

I use lots of the 0431164181 clamp-ons here. They will accommodate one pass
of RG-8 size coax or several turns of computer cables, audio cables, etc.
For example, it will allow 6 or 7 turns of RG-174.

[Elecraft] p3 question ?

BlankGoing to a ham friends tomorrow to help download the new firmware. I
have K3 758 and have completed all the downloads, he also has the P3 with
his K3 and I seem to recall that something special has to be done when you
have the K3-P3 combo, Unplugging the P3 from the K3, ? Any help with the

Since P3 firmware version 00.37 from September of last year it is no
longer necessary to turn off the P3 when downloading K3 firmware. The
P3 is automatically put into bypass mode by K3 Utility.

[Elecraft] P3 Center Frequency

2011-01-20 Thread Hank Garretson
I have K3 M1 and M2 programmed to QSY up and down 5 kHz (for use during
North American Sprints). K22;DN7 and K22;UP7.

Moves K3 frequency up or down 5 kHz. But ...

P3 Center Frequency, both Tracking and Fixed Mode, does not change. With a
slight movement of VFO knob, P3 Center frequency jumps to the correct
frequency.

Any hints on how to fix this?

[Elecraft] K144XV and simultaneous 2m and 6m reception

2011-01-20 Thread Sverre Holm (LA3ZA)

Now that there has just been a software update, I thought it would be a good
time to remind the good people at Elecraft about a bug that annoys those
with the K144XV internal 2 m option installed.

At our club station, LA2AB, we are not the only ones, it seems, that
experience that it is often not possible to listen with one rx on 6 meter
and the other one on 2 meter. See a more detailed report in September last
year:

http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Simultaneously-listening-to-2m-and-6m-td5521449.html

I hope that this will be addressed before the VHF season starts again in
April/May or so!

[Elecraft] k3 tuning power question

2011-01-20 Thread goldtr8
I have a K3 100 watt version and I am curious about what a proper tuning
outpower should be to minimize the potential to damage anything.

I have been using 10 watts but I think that I am then at full power for
low power operation amp so I am thinking I need to have the high power
section transmitting at a low power. So I am thinking that you need to
be above 12.

Bottomline is I am not sure how this part of the radio really works and
sometimes if I start tuning and have a bad match it takes me some time
with the manual tuner to get the swr good.

So any pointers on the best way to set the radio up would be greatly
appreciated

[Elecraft] Elecraft support

2011-01-20 Thread John H Gibson
Dear Fellow Elecrafters,

I am writing to report on my experience with Elecraft support.

My K3 (820) recently developed a perplexing and irritating behavior: as I would
tune in a cw signal, I would come across a frequency very near the CWT center
frequency where the signal’s tone would disappear, and I would hear only key
clicks. This was a very sharp null, and I would hear a good tone either side of
it.

I contacted Elecraft support, and Gary walked me through checking for obvious
problems, like whether I had the notch filter engaged (I did not). Then he
shared the problem with Lyle, who suggested that such a null could occur if I
had set SPKRS=1, and AFX was turned on.

I use only one speaker, so I did have SPKRS=1. And with mono headphones, I have
no need for AFX, but I found that it was turned on. I would not intentionally
have turned it on, but I often do direct frequency entries, and I must have
erroneously hit the AFX/Enter key with multiple presses or poor timing.

I turned off AFX and the problem disappeared.

But this story is less about my problem and its solution than it is about the
energetic and competent support I received from Elecraft. Gary was prompt in
responding to my request for help, and he also was quick to call in Lyle to be
sure that appropriate expertise was brought to the problem. And I noticed that
all correspondence was copied to Wayne, so that he was in the loop as well.

I could not have asked for better support.

[Elecraft] FW: [N1MM] FSK problems on K3 radio

2011-01-20 Thread Tommy Alderman
This is a copy of a message I just posted on the N1MM Logger reflector. This
is not just an N1MM problem because I tried MMTTY 1.64G stand-alone program
and had the same results. If anyone has any experience/helpful suggestion as
to how to fix this, your input would be greatly appreciated. I did spend
several hours going through my user's manual searching for help, but that
was not fruitful.

Thanks and 73,

Subject: [N1MM] FSK problems on K3 radio

Win 7 Pro 64-bit
N1MM v 11.01.01
MMTTY 1.64G
K3 radio

CONFIG:Hardware
COM 3: Radio Control - DTR set to Always OFF - RTS set to PTT
COM1: Digital checked - DTR set to Always OFF / RTS set to Always OFF
EXTFSK: Set to COM 1 - FSK = TxD / PTT = DTR

K3 CONFIG: PTT-KEY RTS - OFF (but I later found out it does not matter how
this is set!)

N1MM and MMTTY transmits the messages fine; any macro is sent correctly and
while sending, I can hear the audio (dittles). The problem is that once the
macro is completed and sends the command to switch to receive, the K3 does
not produce any audio. I have read N1MM's documentation on the K3 and pretty
well followed the section titled 'Option 2', but after about six hours I
have run out of things to try.

All I need is to get the K3 to return to receive mode, and I am aware of the
possible "key-down" condition mentioned in the Option 2 document.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It makes no sense to buy unknown ferrite cores, especially for use on
the HF bands. Study my tutorial on RFI to understand why.

Good advice. -- but there's more. RFI suppression comes from a high
resistive impedance, which in turn occurs around the resonance of the
choke. A single pass through a typical #31 or #43 core is resonant
around 200 MHz -- USELESS on HF. Multiple turns moves the resonance of
the choke lower in frequency where we need it. My RFI tutorial
includes graphs of MEASURED data for some useful cores, and it also
includes a list of ferrite cores that are most useful on the HF and VHF
bands. See Appendix One. See my previous post in this thread for a
link to the tutorial.

> I use lots of the 0431164181 clamp-ons here.

Yes,something this size is quite useful for quieting down noisy computer
and audio gear.

Re: [Elecraft] FW: [N1MM] FSK problems on K3 radio

2011-01-20 Thread Richard Ferch
Tom,

I have had this "stuck in transmit" happen to me a number of times, most
recently just yesterday when I was playing with various settings while
checking out a configuration problem for another N1MM user. I have also
encountered several similar cases on user groups, not only for N1MM
Logger but also for the DXLabs software suite.

The common thread in all of these problem reports appears to be that
when the "stuck in transmit" problem happened, there were two methods of
PTT control being used at once. For example, a user may have been using
PTT via software command over the serial link (TX; and RX; commands) in
parallel with a hardware PTT connection (either to the K3's PTT IN jack,
to the AUX connector, or using RTS on the RS232 port). Whenever this
problem has happened to me, I have always found that I had two parallel
PTT methods configured.

In every such case that I am aware of, disabling all but one of the PTT
methods has always solved the problem. It looks to me as if you have a
hardware PTT connection from DTR on COM1 - at least, that is how you
have EXTFSK configured. If so, that is the only PTT method you need. In
the N1MM Configurer for COM3, is the "Radio PTT via command" check box
checked? If so, try unchecking it to see if that solves the problem.

Thanks to Mike and many others (off list) for the answer, and to Alan for the
implementation. Very neat! The magenta color should have tipped me off!
:-)

[Elecraft] P3 Enhancement Request

2011-01-20 Thread W6SX Hank Garretson

In Tracking Mode, there is a line extending from VFO A cursor to top of screen.

For Fix Track Mode, it would be very nice to have same line extending
from VFO A cursor (wherever it is) to top of screen.

[Elecraft] Latest Firmware Download for K3 fails

2011-01-20 Thread Dale Parfitt

Perhaps someone can enlighten me.
I am using the latest K3 utility to download the latest K3 upgrades.
MCU and FPF appear to go smoothly, but the DSP1 version has failed 4 times
giving me the following error in the download window:
DSP1 verification failed. Reload DSP1
DSP1 firmware load failed
Error code XE216, verficiation number verification failed

The K3 display reads:
E000202
Err DSE

No previous problems with upgrades.
P3 upgrade to 1.00 appears to have gone well.

Tnx,
Dale W4OP

Re: [Elecraft] k3 tuning power question

2011-01-20 Thread Matt Zilmer
I had TUN PWR set to 10 W for a while with no damage to anything.
Since early 2008, it's been set to 25W.

Don't worry, the K3 is pretty much indestructible.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 magenta 'pointer' in display?

2011-01-20 Thread Craig D. Smith
I upgraded today also, Stan - LOVE IT!

The magenta pointer tells you which side of the display screen the VFO B
cursor is on. Makes it easier to move it onto the display screen. Very
nicely implemented, in my opinion.

[Elecraft] P3 ver 1.00

2011-01-20 Thread Dale Parfitt

I solved my download issue by going to an ethernet connection vs wireless. I
am guessing the wireless signal was perhaps more error prone.

Anyway, I like the upgrade but was disappointed that there is no vertical
cursor in fixed mode- at least that I have been able to find so far.
Perhaps my use is a bit odd- but in dealing with weak EME and 500KHz
signals, it is useful to be able to move the cursor over to a narrow trace
on the waterfall and know you are there.
Having to depend on the somewhat wide filter inverted "U" graphic just
doesn't cut it.
