[Elecraft] K3: Windows 7 and USB/serial redux

2011-02-04 Thread John K3TN

I built a new Windows 7 64 bit Pro PC, got all my ham software up and running
and for a brief period of time life was good. A bad RAM module brought that
to a crashing (literally) end. Trying to recover from that I've been having
a series of problems that keep pointing to what looks like the well known
USB/serial port driver kind of problem.

So, it looks like I'm going to do a complete clean re-install of Windows and
start again. When I bought the K3 in Jan 2010 I bought the generic
USB/serial interface from Elecraft. I had loaded the drivers pointed to from
the Elecraft site - is that the safe thing to use? Somewhere else I saw some
pointing to other drivers.

I'm not going to even try to install any of these drivers until I'm 100%
sure the Windows 7 setup is 100% stable, but at some point I'm going to want
to update the K3 firmware...

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Windows 7 and USB/serial redux

2011-02-04 Thread Bob Naumann
John (and everyone else) please **STOP** with the un-installing and
re-installing.

That ended as a solution to problems long before Windows 98 came out.
Re-installing is generally a colossal waste of time and rarely solves
anything.

What to do instead?

Look in control panel and see what Windows tells you that your USB adapter
is.

If you purchased it from Elecraft, it will either be a Prolific unit or an
FTDI unit.

If it is Prolific, go here and download the correct driver:

http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31

If it is an FTDI, go here and download the correct driver:

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

Disconnect your USB cable from the computer, install the correct driver and
after the driver installs, then plug in the cable. After you plug in the
cable, go back into Control Panel and see what com port # Windows has
assigned to your adapter. Set your software to match that com port number.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Windows 7 and USB/serial redux

2011-02-04 Thread Mike
Win 7 may find the drivers on it's own. I'd try that first. Elecraft changed
the KUSB
they sell from a Prolific to a FTDI chipset circa July 2010. Both drivers are
on the
site, so if you download them, it's important to know which cable you have.

Re: [Elecraft] The APF feature of the K3.

2011-02-04 Thread Bill W4ZV

APF was discussed extensively in August 2009 (check the archives) including a
simulation of the exact FT-1000D APF analog circuit which I found and sent
to Al W6LX. Here's Al's simulation which was the model for the K3's DSP
implementation of APF:

http://sites.google.com/site/ft1000apf/w6lxanalysisoftheapfcircuitintheft-1000

If you search online, you can find the FT-1000D Service Manual which has the
analog APF circuit (less the front panel control pot VR8901-2 which is 1k
ohms). You must use the original resistor values, not those later changed
in a Yaesu service bulletin (to address complaints of peakiness...which in
fact is what makes it work). Connoisseurs of APF that bought later
improved FT-1000Ds quickly discovered its APF was not as effective as the
original and reverted to the original peaky design:

[Elecraft] SOC Hank Kohl Memorial CW Bash

2011-02-04 Thread Bob Patten
Honor K8DD (SK) by setting aside time in this twenty four hour event.
I'll post a reminder closer to the actual date.

‘The SOC CW Bash’

To commemorate the passing of one of its founding members, the Second
Class Operators Club will be holding its first ‘SOC CW Bash’ on Saturday
April 2nd between z and 2359z. Many people will remember Hank Kohl
K8DD (SOC #69) as one of the main engines behind QRP ARCI , a
professional CW operator and a seasoned contester so as a fitting
tribute, the SOC hopes to combine all aspects of Hank’s talents and
passions in one event.

Any operator can take part in the ‘Bash’, and although not a contest,
the SOC will be issuing its very own special certificates for top
scorers in both a QRO and QRP section. The club will hopefully be
activating all of its own call signs during various times of the 24 hour
period – W0SOC, M0SOC, W1SOC AND W5SOC – and although there are no
‘strict rules’ the format will be roughly as follows:

- Time: z to 2359z on Saturday 2nd April (nearest Saturday to
 April 1st)
- Call ‘CQ DD’ in memory of Hank around the QRP calling
 frequencies: 3560, 7030 (also check 7040), 14060, 21060,
 28060.
If QRO, please limit power to 100W
- Members to exchange membership number, name and RST
- Non members to exchange name and RST
- Stations worked on different bands will count as separate QSO’s
e.g. If you work W0SOC on 80m, 40m and 20m this will count as
three points but if you work W0SOC twice on 80m this will only
 count as one.

Please submit your scores to rpike78...@btinternet.com by Saturday 16th
April (if you solely use QRP, please note this clearly in your email).

[Elecraft] K2/10 FOR SALE

2011-02-04 Thread KM4VX

I have two K2/10 and a K/3. I would like to sell one of my K/2. The one for
sale has the following options: KSB2, KNB2, KAT2, K160RX, KIO2, KAF2 as well
as the Elecraft USB cable for computer control. It basically has everything
but the battery pack and 5 meter module, which my other K2 has. The radio
works perfectly and has never had any issues. It had modules added and was
aligned in October 2009 by an expert builder. Radio has had very little use,
which is the only reason I am offering it for sale. Price is $1,100.00
insured and shipped to the lower 48. I have about $1700.00 into this radio.
Please reply off-line. Thank you. km...@arrl.net

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Windows 7 and USB/serial redux

2011-02-04 Thread R. Kevin Stover
Ditto what Bob says below.

Anything to do with windows attached devices starts and ends in windows
device manager. Very rarely do we in the IT field have to re-install
windows these days and we try to avoid it all costs. We can lose a half
day production from a machine re-installing windows, bring it up
to current security patch level, re-install of applications and
devices, restoration of user data. Multiply that times three for a
home user just because they don't have the tools we do.

Whenever you install something USB. I don't care what it is, always,
always install the driver first. If you suspect a driver issue with a
device like the KUSB go to device manager, right click on the device and
un-install it, Disconnect the device, refresh the list by searching for
new hardware, re-install the driver, either off the hard drive or CD,
and plug in the device when asked to by the driver install or when the
install is complete.

I was doing IT when plug and pray first reared it's ugly head. I've
never been able to make myself trust it. The drivers in any version of
windows for the popular devices may be weeks, months, or in some cases
years out of date. Don't ever expect a fresh install of windows to have
the drivers you need for your device.

[Elecraft] K1 question on output pwr setting

2011-02-04 Thread bud73
I have a K1 that I built about one year ago.
I am very happy with it and it works FB.
However, I have this quirky thing when trying to set the power output.
I feel the problem is all mine ... but, I can't figure out how to correct it.
When I press the wpm + and wpm - buttons together I can set my power out to
five watts output.
No problem here.
If I turn the K1 off and then on again, the output power is at max, 7 or 8
watts or so.
Then I have to reset the power output as described above back to 5 watts.
It's annoying and I feel the output power should stay at what I set it at when
the K1 is fired up after being turned off.
Any ideas?

2011-02-04 Thread Edward R. Cole
Slightly off the subject (Blue Tooth), but I wear Phonak Savia OTE
hearing aids and they have a high-fidelity program selection. This
is for flat freq. response up to 22-KHz for music and television
listening. I definitely can tell the improvement even with 30dB
hearing degradation and loss above 800-Hz.

Ten years ago I agonized over whether to spend money on a nice
home-theater system or whether my hearing was too bad to enjoy it. I
am forever glad that I got the system as ordinary TV speakers are
nearly useless for me. Of course I use captioning all the time for speech.

One of the nice aspects of the k3 is that audio can be taylored to
one's hearing preferences.

BTW I just installed an upgraded soundcard (emu-0202) in my computer
and it really sounds nicer. It was not my primary reason to get the

No, Tom, they are NOT audio loop devices, but true bluetooth, and only
work with modern bluetooth hearing aids. And I am not sure what sort of
HiFi you expect, but if you have a hearing aid it is probably academic.

Unfortunately, one can't bump up audio output in FSK-D. I use a modem
which only can use 2 KHz tones. The drop in perceived audio level is
quite high there for me. Even if low tones were used, there would still
be a significant loss.

What say Elecraft? Why not let us bump up one segment? FSK-D isn't
used for any other digital mode.

[Elecraft] Raleigh NC Hamfest (RARSfest)

2011-02-04 Thread Lisa Jones - Elecraft Sales
Hamfest season is upon us. We are looking forward to attending more
Hamfests than ever this year!

However, we cannot make them all ourselves so we are asking for
enthusiasts to help.

A great group of enthusiasts is once again showing a table of their
Elecraft products at Frostfest in Virgina this weekend. (weather
permitting).

This is their second Hamfest in the last six months for Elecraft and
from what I hear- they are having fun doing it.

The Raleigh RARSfest, NCS, ARRL Convention is coming up April 26th and
we would love to have some representation there.

Here is how it works:

Elecraft purchases the booth/table, provides a banner, literature and
Elecraft Polo Shirts for the organizers. You get to bring your Elecraft
product(s) to show off and answer questions about building, operating,
etc. Attendees have the opportunity to see our products up close and
personal.

If you are interested in helping out at Raleigh or a local hamfest in
your area, please email me directly: l...@elecraft.com.

Hamfests in February:

Frostfest (VA) Feb. 4-5 (Enthusiasts)

Orlando Hamcation Feb 12-13 (Eric)

Have a great weekend whatever your weather may be!

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Windows 7 and USB/serial redux

2011-02-04 Thread Rich

Several years ago I purchased the KeySpan USB/Serial adapter. I have had
absolutely no problem with it on WinXP, WinVista and Win7 (both 3264 bit).
If you are using a laptop or change equipment around it is a must. The
driver can be setup so that the individual converter will always have the
same serial port, regardless of which usb jack you plug it into. How many
times have you spent an hour or so trying to figure out what is wrong when
al it was is you put the plug into a different jack? I now have two of
these and one is set up as com port 3 and the other as 4. Has made my life
much simpler.

KeySpan model USA 19 HS under $30 on the web.

As they said LOAD the driver first for your operating system. You will need
to go to KeySpan to get it if you get an older version of SW. DO NOT let
windows try and find it or allow windows update to update it. I did once
and it quit working untill I rolled it back.

Re: [Elecraft] Raleigh NC Hamfest (RARSfest)

2011-02-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
I will volunteer for this, but I don't want to man the table myself.
I am looking for others around the Raleigh, NC area to assist, and show
off your Elecraft gear. I will have my K2 and K3 and a few mini-kits.
Let me know if you are willing to help me out here.

Hamfest season is upon us. We are looking forward to attending more

2011-02-04 Thread Mike Weir

Good evening, I tried about a month ago to get the K3 working with WSPR and was
not successful at all. I wanted to give it a go and get it going this weekend
but instead of getting frustrated I wanted to tap in on the knowledge of this
reflector.
Here is what I have...
Win XP
WSPR 2.0
K3 with the KXV3A

Here is what I am looking for
The cabling hookup
The setting in the K3
The setting in WSPR
.in a nut shell all the info to get WSPR up and going...
Thanks very much in advance

[Elecraft] K3: Erratic behavior of REV button

2011-02-04 Thread J. Wolf
Sometimes with my K3 I find it useful when operating split to do so without
dual receive. When I do this, I want to be able to monitor the B transmit
frequency periodically. This is easy with the REV button. The problem is that
sometimes, after releasing the REV button, the radio pops out of split mode.
When I don't notice this, I end up transmitting on the wrong VFO, and you know
what that means. (Up! Up!) Is this a problem others have seen or do I have an
isolated malfunction? Anyone got any input on this?

Re: [Elecraft] Raleigh NC Hamfest (RARSfest)

2011-02-04 Thread Cliff Ward
Hi Don:

I replied separately to Lisa from the email she sent out, but figured I'd
also write to you as I imagine you will be heading up this effort.

My K3 is now complete and I'd be happy to man the booth with you, bringing
my K3 and the few mini-kits I have from Elecraft.

Let's keep in touch...let me know the next step...

Regards,
Cliff
