Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Failed DSP Firmware Download

2011-02-07 Thread GW0ETF

In the 3 years of running my K3 I can only remember once having to do a
forced reload and it was completely straightforward.don't understand the
stress this seems to generate.

Since moving to a netbook recently I've been rebooting my desktop every time
I wanted to do a firmware upload using a hardware serial port; but I do
remember in the past uploading through my Microham CW Keyer via Router with
minimal fuss (though can't remember the reason for the previous forced
upload...!). So when I needed to upgrade from v4.22 a couple of days ago I
thought I'd try the Router again and it went without a hitch and saved all
the booting up and swapping cables in the spider infested mess at the back
of my underdesk PC.

Ofcourse I went into the set up on Router and set to 'No Radio' and 'Disable
Router Queries'. You can if you wish store these settings under separate
profiles for a single click setup. If it doesn't work and you end up with a
'brick' I can always switch on my desktop PC and do a forced upload via
rs232 - what's the panic?

Re: [Elecraft] p3 Tap to QSY in Data A mode

2011-02-07 Thread Bob Naumann
Why not use your mouse and select signals in the PSK software?

You can select any of several signals this way that will be in your passband
and it will be right on the signal. You should not be QSYing your radio to
tune to different signals in the way you describe. This is just the wrong
way to operate PSK.

Since the P3 / K3 is not decoding the specific signal you desire to go to,
and PSK signals are so narrow, the phenomena you describe should be expected
rather than considered a problem.

Use the software.

Too bad this problem doesn't also cause a short first dit at 80 wpm,

improved when there *is* a problem with the communications. The idea of
testing the serial communications before committing to the update is a good
one. Also it does seem that the utility could be improved in it's ability to
recover from errors and give more meaningful messages to the users.
Bootloaders are inherently dumb and they need to be in order to keep them

 expecting too much.

Re: [Elecraft] p3 Tap to QSY in Data A mode

2011-02-07 Thread James Balls

Bob et al,

This is not the way I operate in contests, I use the K3's excellent filters!

Scenario:-
If 1 very strong station is close to 3 weak stations you will not copy the weak
stations due to the strong station shutting the ALC down, so narrow the filters
right up and hey, there are the weak stations!

So using the P3 to find the signals and leaving the K3 filters narrow works
real good for me.

Only thing i have to do is use the VFO B knob while VFO A is running where I
would like the P3 to tune the K3 with click and shoot to the centre of the pass
band when in data A mode.

I think this is a feature that’s required for the P3.

Anyone else agree?

They are complete resets, occurring after MCU, DSP1, DSP2 loads. Note
that the K3 goes through exactly the same LED test sequence and timing

I thought I saw a post in answer to your comment about QSY in data mode, but
perhaps it was an answer in another thread.

The poster said he noticed that when he tapped the knob on the P3 he was
rotating it very slightly. After seeing this he said he set one of the function
buttons to TAP and his troubles went away.

I rarely operate anything but CW here and have noticed the same thing happening

I hope this has been helpful.

In my experience, going on 3 years, it's not necessary to restart the K3 after

Re: [Elecraft] REV button behavior and CommCat

2011-02-07 Thread J. Wolf
For anyone who may be interested, Howard (W6HN) at CommCat has identified
that CommCat is seeing the K3 as going offline when the REV button is pushed
and held. This offline recognition also occurs intermittently and with no
apparent input to the radio's controls. When the error occurs, CommCat
reinitializes its connection with the radio, resetting to a baseline with
split turned off, accounting for the behavior. So far, we haven't found the
reason for this, but the investigation is continuing. The problem does NOT
appear to be with the K3, since I've checked the radio with a different
logging program and found no problem. If anyone else on the reflector is
using CommCat and seeing this behavior, please contact me. More brains may
lead to a faster resolution of the issue. When the solution is found, I'll
report back.

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Failed DSP Firmware Download

2011-02-07 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
As long as the Win 7 user does not understand how the OS handles USB
devices, there will always be folks tripping over this opaque procedure in
Windows. The drill is anything but intuitive, but if the user does not
understand it, the use of complex combinations of loggers, data mode
programs, Microham style boxes and USB/serial devices is going to trip up
users, including those trying to upgrade firmware.

This is not at all without sympathy with those who are struggling the first
time around to get it straight in their head. I have been as confused and
lost as anyone. But the tone of voice taken by some toward Elecraft is
unwarranted, in a word, rude, and at best simply uniformed.

This quandary is NOT Elecraft's fault, nor is it Elecraft's responsibility
to jump through hoops every time one of these secondary applications makes a
goof, or the OS puts out yet another flawed automatic OS update that
destroys what was previously working. I am constantly surprised at the
issues not of their own making that they WILL undertake for the sake of
their users. They draw the line far over in generous territory, a fact
which OUGHT to earn them uniform approval. We need to give them room to
refuse those that they deem too expensive or beyond their ability to
maintain.

There is an ancient tale about a child who insisted on biting his mother
while nursing. When the mother decided therefore that it was time to wean
the child, it complained, saying Now who will I bite when I am upset?
 Some things never change.

I'm not seeing the problem. With the K3 set up for PSK D data mode and

Could you tell me exactly how you have the K3 and P3 set up? What

Re: [Elecraft] Want to Buy a K3

2011-02-07 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

The 250hz 8 pole is amazingly good in a RTTY contest and appears to
me to be about as narrow as can be used. The 500 hz 8 pole Inrad is
a little more versatile but not quite as good at holding onto a
 runfrequency.

The 400 Hz INRAD is probably the best compromise. Wide enough for
tuning the band but good skirts/reasonable selectivity. The 250
would seem to require rather critical tuning.

I use the 1.8kc for SSB contesting but I think the Inrad 1.5 kc
would be better and plan to pick one up before the fall SSB
 contests.

I find the 1.5 KHz filter to be too tight (I have a couple). It
requires too much adjustment to be useful, particularly in the
heat of battle. The overall difference between 1500 and 1800
in the IF doesn't mean much when using a more narrow DSP setting
but it is significant in ease of use when tuning.

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Failed DSP Firmware Download

2011-02-07 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

The radio queries can be disabled in the microHAM USB Device
Router if you go to the ports tab and click the SET button for the
CAT port you will get a new screen the has a check box for Disable
router queries. If you are brave, you could try this. I am not
sure if I am that brave.

Disable Router queries will not resolve the problem because Router
will immediately begin polling when the K3 Utility closes the port
for the reboot phase of the update. It is theoretically possible
to set the radio type to None and do an update but you can not allow
Router or the microHAM keyer to reset (e.g. power must stay on) during
the reboot phase.

Because of the possibility to turning the radio - any radio - or the
microHAM interface into a brick by an improper update (or by buggy
software if microHAM were to allow something like the K3 Utility to
disable the keyer's normal operation), microHAM simply prohibits any
update through the keyer.

proceeded to click the upgrade button, there was no Are You Sure? warning
as Microsoft has trained us to expect, it just proceeded to turn the radio
 into a brick.

After the thoughts of a road trip to Aptos went through my mind, I
remembered the warning, poked around in the manual and found the recovery
procedure. I switched to a physical serial port on the PC and after a
couple of attempts managed to turn the brick back into a radio.

It would be nice if the upgrade installation software was a bit more robust
and didn't just give up if it gets a bad record (the records do have

after a bad record, it could probably recover.

My first time FW upgrade failed too. The problem? I use Router a
virtual port defining piece of software microHAM uses for their
product's interfaces to such things as the microKEYER II.

In their manual is a warning in Yellow to not perform FW upgrades via
the microKEYER II interface which uses a port in their Router. Indeed -
don't do it. microHAM support told me the problem is the Router is
continually polling the radio and interferes with the download. While
all other features and functions of Elecraft's Utility and Memory Editor
works fine, the FW download does not.

I have a desktop PC with no serial ports only lots of USB. Elecraft
sells a very nice serial RS-232 to USB adapter cable with FTDI chip.
Using the FTDI driver to define a separate USB port as a COM port works
well. I have also used Prolific drivers for converter cables using
Prolific protocol without any attention. Both work really well.

It will/would be nice to have Elecraft provide a USB port in the radio
like some other manufacturers. ICOM for instance - absolutely trouble
free and simple. Copy a file to a thumb drive and stick it in the
radio's USB jack and press Upload. Also in the case of ICOM's 7800 and
7700, you can plug a USB keyboard in and run RTTY or PSK - from the
 keyboard. No paddle needed.

Anyway - microHAM has excellent software and hardware but as they say,
do not attempt to download FW into any radio using an interface with
something like microKEYER II. So when I want to perform a FW update I
unplug the microKEYER II originating DB-9 from the K3 and plug in the
separate USB/RS232 cable and perform the update.

Dan,

Please do not distribute instructions that directly contradict the
warning included in the User's Manual for every microHAM product.

While you may have been lucky to avoid a negative outcome, that can't
be guaranteed. Neither microHAM nor microHAM America, LLC (and I doubt
Elecraft) can be responsible for the results of failing to follow the
instructions. I have no doubt that the first time someone turns their
radio or interface into a brick by following an unapproved set of
third party instructions they will hold Elecraft and/or microHAM
responsible.

I've used the work around to update K3 and/or P3 through MK II and
experienced upload failures. While the failures were recoverable (I
did not brick any hardware), the chances of failure - even when done
by an someone who knows the system very well - are simply too great to
encourage uploading new firmware using any procedure or hardware other
than that approved by Elecraft.

The words would seem suggests that you have not actually used the 250
Hz filter, or have not used it much. I HAVE used both 250 Hz and 400 Hz
8-pole filters extensively, and I do NOT feel that the 250 Hz filter is
too narrow or that it requires rather critical tuning. The -6dB
bandwidth is roughly 330-350 Hz, so if you use it as K6LL has suggested
(that is, tell the K3 it's a 400 Hz filter), it's nearly ideal for
crowded band CW and RTTY contesting. If you want to listen wider, simply
use the width control.

I haven't used the 1.5 kHz filter, but I use the 1.8 kHz filter
virtually all the time for SSB contesting. I find it rather tweaky to
tune just right, and I definitely would NOT want anything narrower for
SSB. I tell the K3 that it is a 2 kHz filter.

Joe,

We very specifically singled out FSK-D for this request. No other
digital mode would be impacted.

If one introduced say 6 db in the segment covering 2KHz and up to the

Re: [Elecraft] Want to Buy a K3

2011-02-07 Thread David Gilbert

I bought the 1.5 kHz filters instead of the 1.8 kHz filters, and I don't
find them particularly difficult to tune even in a contest. The key, of
course, is to adjust the Shift down to somewhere between 950 Hz and 1050
Hz. The only problem I've ever had with them is that some voices have
such an extreme pitch that it is necessary to adjust the Shift for
clarity, but that is rarely necessary.

That all being said, I don't think the 1.5 kHz filters provide that much
of an advantage for SSB compared with the 1.8 kHz filters. We're
talking roofing filters, after all, and generally speaking there are
very times that very strong adjacent SSB signals occupy the space
between 1.5 kHz and 1.8 kHz AND are clean enough not to spill over into
both passbands anyway. I think the great majority of the time the 1.8
kHz filters with a narrower DSP setting would work excellently, and some
voices have better intelligibility at 1.8 kHz than they do at 1.5 kHz.

If I were buying them again I'd probably go with the 1.8 kHz filters.

There is a subtle difference. The K3 Utility does indeed issue a command that

parameter save where selected parameters (like the VFO frequency) are saved

So power off and on is just a bit more than reset.

Config save preserves this EEPROM. During restore I write to that EEPROM,
then reset the MCU. During startup the newly restored EEPROM is used to set
up RAM versions of config. Restore wouldn't work if EEPROM were written as
 part of the post-restore reset.

To see this at work: turn the VFO to 7.0 MHz, then turn the radio off and
on. It should come back at 7.000 MHz. Then turn the VFO to 7.050. Then load
firmware. After the firmware reset completes, what VFO setting do you see?
That's the EEPROM parameter save at work. If you save and restore config, the
current VFO setting us one of those settings.

type of equalizer the K3 has inside.

No, the gain is not constant across the segment, it is tapered so that
setting two adjacent ranges to the same level creates a flat response
across the boundary. In the case of 2125/2295 (traditional high
tones) setting the 1600 Hz band at 0 and the 2400 Hz band at +10 dB
will create a measurable tilt between the two tones ... a similar
tilt will be seen with the 915/1085 Hz tone pair for the 800/1600 Hz
 bands.

It's easy to see the behavior, simply use a stable oscillator like the
XG-2. Set the RxEQ to boost only the 2400 Hz band by +16 dB, zero the
dBV meter at 1 KHz and measure the level at 2.125 and 2.295 KHz. The
difference will be at least 2 dB (I measure 2.2 to 2.3 dB tilt at
 both 2125/2295 and 915/1085).

The behavior of a parametric EQ (which the K3 is) is very different
 than a shelving EQ.

Right. To understand this, it's important to realize that filters
implemented in DSP are simply digital simulations of ordinary analog
filters -- in this case, resonant circuits tuned for the desired
frequency and bandwidth. Ideally, well-designed sets of filters should
combine to yield minimal ripple in their amplitude and phase response if
all (or adjacent bands) are set to the same gain. The extent to which
this is achieved depends on the circuits that they are simulating, and
some circuits are far better than others in this regard.

[Elecraft] K2 Kit Questions

2011-02-07 Thread Phil Hystad
Gang,

So, I am thinking that another kit is in my future. I have a K3 and a KX1 and
I am thinking about the K2. I would be using it for CW and QRP or 2*QRP only.
So, I wouldn't plan on getting the SSB option and I am not planning on the 100
watt PA or the ATU.

But, I do have questions about filters (remember, CW usage only).

1. Question: is the radio a completely analog radio (no DSP) if you DO NOT
buy the DSP filter option?

2. Question: is the DSP filter worth the money?

3. Question: is the Audio filter useful? Is the Audio filter still useful if
I buy the DSP filter?

Any other comments and suggestions are definitely accepted.

 1. Question: is the radio a completely analog radio (no DSP) if you DO NOT

Yes, if you do not purchase the DSP option. A substantial amount of
digital is still used, but not directly in the signal path. The
digital stuff is used to control the rig, set and operate the VFO,
change bands, communicate between options, etc.
 2. Question: is the DSP filter worth the money?

This is a subjective issue. Some people like the DSP (I do), others
prefer the simplicity of the audio filter (KAF2). I would recommend one
or the other, but the rig runs fine without them. Depends on your
operating style. For occasional use, the built in variable bandwidth
filter may be enough. I really like the combination of the variable
filter and DSP working together.
 3. Question: is the Audio filter useful? Is the Audio filter still useful
if I buy the DSP filter?

See above. Keep in mind that this is a choice of one or the other, not
both. The K2 cannot accept both units at once.
Any other comments and suggestions are definitely accepted.

Buy the KAT2 internal tuner. You won't be sorry. It is astounding in
it's ability to match pretty much anything, and will be very helpful if
you decide to try out in the field operating with makeshift antennas.

[Elecraft] K2 Kit Questions

2011-02-07 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Phil,

My answers to your questions would be:

1.  Question:  is the radio a completely analog radio (no DSP) if you DO NOT
buy
the DSP filter option?

Yes, completely analog.  Even the KDSP2 is the audio stage.

2.  Question:  is the DSP filter worth the money?

Personally I don't think so, the artifact is annoying and no way comparable to
K3.  IMHO, it is just a primitive DSP as at today technology.

3.  Question:  is the Audio filter useful?  Is the Audio filter still useful if
I buy the DSP filter?

Yes, you can get KAF2 audio filter cheaply in the second hand market because
some elecrafters would like to dispose of theirs when they get the KDSP2. For a
price of about USD45 in the second hand market, you can get an audio filter +
internal clock, very value for money.  Only either KDSP2 or KAF2 can be
installed but not both.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Kit Questions

2011-02-07 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Phil,

The K2 RF stages are all analog. Any digital signals are for control
purposes. The VFO is a PLL/VCO implementation.

You will get varied opinions about the KDSP2 vs. the KAF2 for CW use.
Some like the DSP, others prefer the KAF2, while others advocate that
the variable width IF filter is sufficient. I am in the latter category
- I have the KAF2 in mine but seldom use it. Since the KDSP2 and the
KAF2 occupy the same physical space inside the K2, only one can be
present at a time.

If you are considering the use of digital modes, you will want to
install the KSB2 even though you do not intend to operate SSB.

If you are contemplating portable operation, you will want to include
the KAT2 internal tuner. If you have any desires to connect the K2 to a
rig control computer application (logger or something more exotic), you
will want the KIO2.

the 100 watt PA or the ATU.

But, I do have questions about filters (remember, CW usage only).

[Elecraft] SO2R with K2 and DX Doubler

2011-02-07 Thread Tom KG3V

Just wondered if anyone has used the K2 with the DX Doubler SO2R box. I am
setting one up and am in the process of building up the cables. I plan to
use this for CW and SSB contesting. I would be interested in any of your
experience with a similar setup.

For cabling I bought the generic cable with the DXD box and have added the
necessary connectors.

Thanks and 73,

Tom

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] XV144 fault (offset problem?)

2011-02-07 Thread Roger de Valle
Don

I have to say this has taken a good while to sort out, I sent an email
to Gary on 19/04/2010 notifying him of the problem. The response then
was to send a couple of new crystals also on the wrong frequency so I
gave up and purchased a crystal locally. I have to say the transverter
works fine now but I wish it had been sorted out a lot earlier.

I am an exclusively CW op. I have the KAF2 fitted but it is never used.
It may be useful for SSB ops, but for CW the CW 400Hz filter does
everything you want - I have FL4 set to 200Hz but even that never gets
used.

I would endorse what others say, get the KAT2. If you intend to use it
for contesting then the KIO2 is essential for rig control. The KAT160
is also very handy for giving you the two antenna option even if you
don't use top band.

[Elecraft] K2 Kit Questions

2011-02-07 Thread Johnny Siu
Yes, KAT2 is a good option because it can tune almost anything.  I use KAT2 to
tune a 40 ft random wire and PTT at any time I like.  K160RX is not expensive.
If you order KAT2 + K160RX at the same time, you will save some shipping costs.

 cheers,
