[Elecraft] General Digital Contesting Help

2011-02-11 Thread goldtr8
Group,

I would like to attempt to try and do some digital contesting with my
K3.

It took me a long time to get HRD and its associated software working
and I finally can use the DM780 software fairly good.

What I am not able to figure out is the proper set of calls and
responses that contestors are looking for.

So can someone point me in the proper direction on how to go about
understanding how contesting works and how to log. I have been trying
to read up on the internet, but I am missing some basic points of
knowledge to pull it together.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I was impressed by a downloadable book on http://qwikandlow.com

It covered a lot of topics very nicely and the price of the book is right...

Or you can just use AFSK + VOX and not worry about it.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft at the Orlando ARRL Hamcation this weekend

2011-02-11 Thread Barry Pfeil
I just left the Elecraft booth an hour or so ago and the "K-Line" (LOVE that
name) did look great with the K3-P3-KPA500 combination bolted side-by-side.
With
the amp at 26 pounds in weight per Eric, I'd guess the whole station comes out
well under 50 pounds . Of course you have to add a DC supply for the K3 but
you
might still get in under 50 lbs overall even with a KAT500R added. IMPRESSIVE!!

I live in Silicon Valley not that far from Elecraft and that's USUALLY where I
see Eric. But I'm in Florida visiting a relative so thought I would check out
the Hamcation. Since Eric wasn't expecting to see me it was fun to see his
little double-take when he did and admitted to wondering for a millisecond if
he
had REALLY just traveled 2500 miles :-) It's a pretty decent show - check it
out if you can,

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 v. TT R4020

2011-02-11 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
A off-reflector comment by a PSK operator reminded me that letters are
sometimes dropped in PSK and, if the operator isn't watching the waterfall,
it's easy to lose the "K" and not realize the transmission has ended. He's
seen "PSE K" become common on PSK as a way of adding redundancy to signal
the end of the transmission. Another approach is to repeat the "K" as in
"KKK".

If one VFO is data mode (DATA A, AFSK A, FSK D, PSK D) and the other
is not data (CW, USB/LSB, etc.), you will get Split n/a if you attempt

Re: [Elecraft] Using K3 with N1MM and MMTTY

2011-02-11 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

 > How do you K3/N1MM users interface the MMTTY engine?

Assuming you are using FSK (FSK D), you need two serial ports. One
port is used by N1MM Logger for radio control (connected to the K3
RS-232 port), The other port is the N1MM Logger "Digital" port -
the TxD line drives an open collector transistor connected to the
FSK input on the K3 ACC jack and the RTS line drives an open collector
transistor connected to the PTT line on the K3 ACC jack.

If you are using AFSK A, you can dispense with the "Digital" port
completely and allow N1MM Logger to control PTT using the RTS line
on the k3 RS-232 port (PTT - KEY => rts-OFF or rts,dtr).  In that
case you would connect the computer Line Out to the K3 Line In
and the K3 Line Out to the computer Line In with a pair of audio
cables (or a more capable/advanced interface).

How much current do you need? This looks like it's made for the KX-1:

  12V @ 500 mA regulated ... $8..50 each

I have a couple around here and they're almost certainly analog -
16 oz not the 2 oz light weight switchers.

[Elecraft] QRT 600m for weekend

2011-02-11 Thread Edward R. Cole
I will be using my K3 on 1296-eme this weekend so will not operate on 600m
I should be able to beacon Sunday night.
Monday will depend on Valentines Day plans (whether we go out in the evening)

The apparent RF problem with the NDB has not reappeared. I noted I
could produce the same symptoms by trying to adjust RF power on the
K3 while transmitting. I'm guessing a sw problem with WSPR and the
cpu in the K3? I am able to adjust transmit power when running
SSB/CW modes. So maybe it was self-inflicted by my adjustments?

Sorry for errant frequency listing, recently. I now have the
standard WSPR freq. written into memory on my K3 for
600/80/40/30/20/17/15/10m. No antenna for 30m at this time.

Maybe of relevance for some. But with the excellent support from Gary
and the team at Elecraft, plus the ability of most on here to carry out
repairs themselves, it must be pretty rare for complete kit to have to
be returned to Atpos. My 9 year K2 has never gone wrong, I have done
mods to it over the years and changed the volume control, but have
always had excellent service from Elecraft. The difference in cost for
us UK customers makes it a non-brainer.

I assume buying from QRPproject does not stop you getting technical
support from Elecraft?

Re: [Elecraft] UK Import Duty attracted by factory built K3.

2011-02-11 Thread Stephen Prior
Peter,

I have to confess that you have a very good point there. We are so used
to having good legally backed warranties in the EU that we forget that
they have to be paid for! We mistakenly assume that nothing will go
wrong, although in the case of the K3 for example, its modular approach
would simplify matters.

Part of the disparity in prices, it must be said though, is that the
exchange rate with the Euro is not as favourable to us as it is with the
USD. If we still had about €1.50 to £1 it would make all the difference!

There is another big difference: QRPproject warranty is two years and shipment

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 v. TT R4020

2011-02-11 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I don't find anything "Liddish" about the 3x3 calling sequence when not
working a pileup, working a string of stations on a particular frequency or
contesting.

Indeed, what I find poor practice are those who try to answer my CQ with
only their call sent once. I can't tell if they are calling me, if they were
tuning up or if it's another QSO that emerged from the QSB.

Ron AC7AC

-Original Message-

That was a standard call protocol in the coastal marine service. Listen
to KSM on Sat afternoons [in NA] on 500, 4350.5, 6474.0, 8438.3, or
12993.0 KHz. Their "wheel" will run "V V V V V V V V V DE KSM KSM
KSM [tfc list if any] QSX 500 4 6 8 12." They have a 16 MHz frequency
too, can't remember it. I occasionally fall back into the protocol
calling CQ when I'm activating a summit and my rate is agonizingly slow
and I'm getting bored :-)

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] headphone jack replacement tips?

2011-02-11 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Another way to treat that jack more gently is to use a right-angle adapter.
That greatly shortens the "level arm" sticking out in front of the K2.

Can't say it's the reason, buy my 11 year old K2 still has the original jack
even though I use phones 100% of the time (and a right-angle adapter).

Ron AC7AC

-Original Message-
  John,

If you have no de-soldering tools, try to get the solder out with wick,
but if that fails, cut the jack apart and remove the pins one at a time.

I don't see any advantage to not using the headphone jack. Who knows,
the new one may last forever.
There is a finite chance of a future failure, but then everything in the
world carries with it some burden of chance. We just have to be
practical and take our chances.

per-band. Before engaging SPLIT, tap A>B twice to ensure that both

12993.0 KHz. Their "wheel" will run "V V V V V V V V V DE KSM KSM
KSM [tfc list if any] QSX 500 4 6 8 12." They have a 16 MHz frequency

Re: [Elecraft] K3 APF OFF/ON USING PRESETS I/II

2011-02-11 Thread Wayne Burdick
Jack,

That isn't quite what I meant. You need to set CONFIG:DUAL PB to APF.
Now select preset I, and turn APF ON by holding the DUAL PB switch.
Then switch to preset II and turn APF off again using the DUAL PB
switch. From then on you should be able to alternate between I and II
and have APF turn on and off.

You can also vary WIDTH for each preset. For example, for preset I, I
set WIDTH to 200 Hz and APF on. For preset II I set WIDTH to 400 Hz
with APF off.

Hi Lee,

You'll definitely want to read a book or two on PIC coding, and you
should carefully read the data sheet for your selected part(s). But if
you get stuck, let me know. I've been writing code for PICs for many
years, including the firmware for all Elecraft transceivers, and I can
probably give you a little push in the right direction.

I'd also suggest you sign up for the Microchip user forum. Members of
this group are pretty civilized and usually give good advice.

One final tip: If you see an error message pop up during use of any
PIC development tool, just put it in quotes into a Google search. You
won't be the first one to have seen it. This is often the quickest way
to solve a problem with tools such as MPLAB, compilers, etc.

[Elecraft] setting up RTTY SO2R with K3s and WriteLog

2011-02-11 Thread k6rb
Last night I was able to set up an SO2R capability using two K3s, two
sound cards, and just COM1 and COM2. There was no need to add an extra two
COM ports. This works with AFSK, but not FSK.

The tricky part is creating two instances of RTTYrite/MMTTY and having
them associated with the proper sound card. You interface radio 1 with one
sound card, and radio 2 with the other sound card (e.g. line in/line out
interface).

Set up your WriteLog contest log as usual for SO2R but use AA5AU's ports
set up (don't assign CW to your LPT, etc.). But, don't select the RTTY
screen, just yet. First, click on the L log entry line to make it active,
and then select the RTTY screen in the contest tab. This will create the
first instance of RTTYrite/MMTTY. Using the RTTYrite (not MMTTY) screen
tabs, go to the middle tab which will open up MMTTY configuration screens.
Go to "misc" and on the left, you'll see "device" with a menu of numbers
-1, 0, 1, etc. Select "0" and hit "OK." Tune in a RTTY station with radio
1 and make sure the waterfall/tuning ellipses are working (shows that
sound card is associated with that radio and screens).

Next, click on the R log entry line, then again "select" a "RTTY Screen"
in the contest tab. This will enable a second instance. This time, when
you go to the MMTTY configuration tab, choose device "1". That should
associate your second sound card with radio 2 and the second set of
RTTYrite/MMTTY screens.

With my set up, I have VOX deselected on both K3s (e.g. it's using PTT)
and in the WriteLog ports screen, I have COM PTT as "yes." This has
eliminated a problem I was having where during RX the VOX would trigger
the radio into TX mode. It may just be a problem in my set up.

As always, make sure your AFSK signal gain is adjusted to just give you
peak power at your setting. If you crank it any more than that, you'll
risk creating spurious junk. After all, you are operating "phone" in a
fashion and cranking up the gain too far will create a mess.

the programming of PIC devices?

Lee - K0WA

Lee,
Especially for the PIC18, 24 and 30 series, Mikael (OH2AUN), has put
together a nice s/w package, FlashForth.
It is available free on SourceForge.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/flashforth/

With the wealth of information provided by Microchip - free,
   MPLab from Microchip -- free,
   low cost development boards,
a programmer such as PICKit 2 or 3,
   software such as FlashForth,
real time investigation of, and learning about, registers, bits, i/o,

[Elecraft] [K2] headphone jack replacement tips?

2011-02-11 Thread John Shadle
I think I finally might get to replacing my failed headphone jack this
weekend. Anyone have any tips for this little job? I recall that there
are more than a few pins to desolder.

Also, does it make sense to not put stress on the headphone jack in
the future by plugging my headphones into the external speaker jack on
the rear of the unit? My headphone cable is plenty long to reach
there, and would rather not have to replace this again in the
future--as it seems to be the case with many folks.

Re: [Elecraft] Split not available

That would certainly cure the problem and would have been saved the tumult of
"LID" and "UP UP" I received at the hands of the big guns. I had never ever
before had a problem going to spilt so when I hit split, I set the VFO and
started calling. Much to my surprise, split never happened. And the cure to the
problem is, as you say, simply do an A>B before going to split.

2011-02-11 Thread Gary, W7TEA

Mike, Ten Tec provides for CW mode selection on its larger rigs--Orion and
Omni VII.
I believe the Eagle only allows Curtis B mode.

Re: [Elecraft] Split not available

2011-02-11 Thread w5ov
If the "Split" function were to include a A->B like I suggested recently,
this would not be an issue.

Some condemned this suggestion as a "bad" idea, but I doubt that they
operate much or they would know what a pain in the neck this is.

The logic should be:
When Holding Split: if VFO B is not already on the same band and mode,
then it should do a VFO A -> VFO B, and then Split should be turned on.

If VFO B is already on the same band and mode as VFO A, then just turn
Split on.

I find that the second condition NEVER occurs.

You may want to consider looking at the TI LaunchPad as well. The demo
board is cheap (less than $5) and they are making a big push with them.

I'm just getting started with mine, but so far so good.

Exactly. I'm a new K3 owner (~1 week) and had the same issue a few days into
ownership.VFO B was in a mode other than DATA A.

To prevent it from happening again, I added a double tap of A->B to my "go
to RTTY" macro, which copies the mode of VFO A to VFO B, so both VFOs are
always the proper mode.

Lee,

I have assembled PIC code under Linux for several different Microchip
microcontrollers using GPUTILS:

   http://gputils.sourceforge.net/

and have programmed them using Picprog:

  http://hyvatti.iki.fi/~jaakko/pic/picprog.html

Microchip's web site (http://www.microchip.com) provides datasheets, tutorials,
and sample code for use by anyone interested in making use of their
microcontrollers. There are also on-line discussion groups (such as
http://www.piclist.com) that provide VERY useful information.

I have also learned quite a bit by reading, "Programming & Customizing PICmicro
Microcontrollers", by Myke Predko.

(Incidentally, it was the construction of my K2/100 in 2003 that was the
driving force behind my getting interested in integrating PICs in many of my
electronics projects.)

Re: [Elecraft] PIC Programming Book

2011-02-11 Thread Brian Alsop
Lee and Jeff,

By registers, I think you are referring to those bits which must be set
to select the various options a particular PIC pin may be used for.
(If not skip the rest of this posting.)

Setting these registers is the bane of PIC programming.

There is a tendency for the programming documentation to send one to the
nearly incomprehensible device spec sheet for details. It varies from
device to device. These sheets usually give examples in assembly
programming which really don't help the common man much.

The real solution seems to be to find a bit of coding that does
something similar and use it as guidance.

Some of the problem is with the compiler used to generate the hex code.
Some are smart enough to set some or all of the registers for one,
some are not.

If one is just fooling around trying to get one's feet wet in PIC
programing then the PIC-AXE series of devices are ideal. There is a
free BASIC language compiler. There are no registers to set! The price
per device is in the $5 to $10 price range. They are in circuit
programmable so one doesn't need separate hardware to do the
programming. I just finished up rotor control box using one of their
low end chips.

One might think that these devices can't do much. Not so. How about:
12 bit A/D converters (many/chip), D/A, RS232 I/O, IR device I/O,
keyboard and keypad input, servo output, temperature read routines, +
lots more. Most are accessible with one or two line commands. No
registers to set!

We've fooled with here are the PARALLAX PIC's. Easy like above and in
circuit programmable. Also no registers but $50 and up per chip is a
barrier.

Then there is the MIKROBASIC suite of programs and compilers (BASIC,C,
PASCAL, assembly) for 16F type chips (actually it encompasses the entire
family through 40 pin PICS). One can do a lot with the free versions of
their compilers. It requires a separate programming board and is geared
to more high end chips/applications. Documentation is decent and has
lots of examples. I made up a custom and software programmable antenna
switch box using one of the 40 pin PIC's and the K3 BCD band data
outputs. Registers have to be mostly set by the user but some typical
defaults are contained in device dependent chip files.

Here are some links:

http://www.mikroe.com/forum/
http://www.rev-ed.co.uk/picaxe/

It is totally amazing what can be done with a few bytes or RAM and a few
K of ROM. Once logic can be built into a chip, a whole world of
possibilities open up.

BTW, I'm just an amateur with all the above. It does take some (or a
sometimes a lot of) muddling through to get there.

Here's a place to start.

http://www.warpedlogic.co.uk/node/3

It all depends on what he's using to program, Assembly Language or a
high level language like C. If he's using Linux then it won't be Basic.

I've been playing with the idea of learning the way of the PIC. I'm a
network/systems admin kinda guy so programming will be new. We'll see
if I've got the patience.

[Elecraft] PIC Programming Book

2011-02-11 Thread Lee Buller

My friend, Jeff, who is not ham (His wife is...go figure) is a computer Linux
geek and is trying to figure out how to program PIC computers. I told him the
other day that some Hams use them all the time in projects. Not me...but some

He is having some issues with finding information about registers. I wonder if
the people on the list could point me to books, manuals, information concerning
the programming of PIC devices?

In our day and age it seems that Common Sense is in short supply. If you
don't
have any Common Sense - get some Common Sense and use it. If you can't find

Common Sense is the image of the Creator expressing revealed truth in my mind.
