Re: [Elecraft] OT Hearing HRD Communicate w/K3

In the past (in other situation and not k3 vs HRD) using shielded cable for
serial connection and connecting its shield to signal ground ONLY at one
edge (leaving shield disconnected at the other edge) helped me to fix noise
capture. Maybe this may help also in this case. 73 to everybody

[Elecraft] K3 Lockup problem

2011-03-19 Thread Jim Sheldon
Had a little scare this morning. Got up early and turned the K3 on (it was on
17 meters where I left it last night at shutdown). Rather than use the
bandswitch, I just did a direct frequency entry for 1.808 MHz planning to call
CQ on RTTY. The K3 did the QSY but was locked up at that point with 1.808.00
showing on the display and none of the buttons would work and neither the Main
or Sub VFO's would tune. Tried to shut it off, but the power button was also
locked - the Lock symbol wasn't showing. Had to cycle power by turning the
power supply off. On re-powering the K3, everything worked normally.

Anyone run into this before? I AM using the test version of firmware, (MCU
4.30, FPL 1.14 and 2.7 in DSP 1 and 2) that turns QRQ off when you enter
Split mode and wondering if a minor bug may have crept in during the coding
of this version or possibly have been there and not discovered before? I tried
to duplicate it but was unable to do so. It may have just been a random glitch.

[Elecraft] K2 Almost Finished - Then Disaster

2011-03-19 Thread Al Gold
I almost had my K2 finished having send and receive on all but 12,15 and 17
meters. Decided to redo the 15 and 17 meter low pass torroidal inductors
and after I finished had no receive at all and no transmit. Started
troubleshooting and the transceiver, which has randomly come up with 080
info warnings began to come up with them more frequently. Additionally, if
you tried to change bands, it would display my power out information even
though I am not transmitting. I attacked the 080 problem using one of the
articles on the website and everything checked out ok. So I decided to
reset the radio with the 456 method. After that, nothing made any sense on
the displays. I started checking all the pinouts on the control board to
the rf board and my hand slipped, killing the radio - no displays, no
relays, etc. I tracked down the problem to a bad 5 volt regulator on the
control board and replaced that. Got five volts back but the regulator
(7805) heated up quickly and the voltage went down to 2 volts. The MCU
also got red hot in a few seconds. I ordered the firmware kit from Elecraft
which would give me a new MCU and IOC. With the MCU removed, the 5 volt
regulator is fine - doesn't overheat and stays at 4.99 volts. I hace
checked all resistors on the control board and front panel and everything
else seems fine. I think the MCU and IOC replacements should solve my
problem. Any suggestions??

[Elecraft] Connecting to Sub-Rx IF

2011-03-19 Thread Edward R. Cole
I brought out a connection from the sub-Rx IF of my K3, today. Not
too hard once I figured out a couple things. I am tapped into the IF
at P86A (or W3). This is the input to the Noise Blanker on the
KRX3. One caution is that +9vdc is present at this point so one must
provide a .001 uF coupling capacitor to block the DC as this is
subject to loading or shorting when you connect to the IF. I used a
small disc ceramic cap.

The cap feeds a run of RG-174 (100% shield Belden 7805) coaxial cable
which I have placed two ferrite beads over the coax shield at the
connection to the cap. I bring the coax out a large hole in the
KRX-3 shield where I added two windings thru a .37 inch toroid core
for more decoupling. The coax then runs to a panel-mount (UG-1094)
BNC connector in the hole provided for the XV144 internal transverter
(which I do not have).

This provides equal signal level as the the main-Rx IF to my
LP-Pan's. I will write up the installation with plenty of photos on
my webpage for the Linrad Project:
http://www.kl7uw.com/LINRAD.htm

A big CAVEAT to anyone considering doing this: Use anti-static mat,
wrist-strap, and ground your tools and solder iron to the radio case
before touching any circuitry. This is best left to the experienced builder.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Almost Finished - Then Disaster

2011-03-19 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Allan,

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes.

It sounds like you had the MCU chip plugged in backwards!

The info 080 message says that the MCU cannot communicate with one or
more of the firmware chips on the options (and includes the KIOC chip on
the RF Board).

The no receive is a different problem - it is not related to the failure
of the MCU nor the Info 080 messages.

NEVER connect a cable shield to signal ground -- this MAKES a Pin One
Problem. The only proper connection of a cable shield is the SHIELDING
ENCLOSURE (like the chasssis).

When you disconnect the shield at one end, you stop shield current.
That CAN be an acceptable fix, but it can also CAUSE noise and RF
problems because it shields noise from only one end of the cable.

If you analyze the header from one of the e-mails, you may discover that it
didn't really come from your e-mail account or your machine.

It's common for malware to infect a computer and read the 'address book' in
that machine. If the user of that machine had ever received or downloaded an
e-mail from you, your address is in the list. The malware grabs an address
at random as the sender. In this case it was your e-mail address.

It's happened to me once in the past 15 years, but once was enough. Still,
there's no sure solution.

Re: [Elecraft] Installed K3EXREF

2011-03-19 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Installing the K3EXREF involves installing a connector/cable assembly in the
REF. hole in the K3's rear panel and running the cable under the RF board to
the front panel shield, then up behind the front panel shield. The other end
plugs into the TMP connector on the KREF3 reference oscillator board that
sticks through the hole in the shield.

A small pony board plugs into the connector on the component side of the
KREF3 board, held in place by a screw that passes through it and the KREF3
board and into the PEM nut in the shield.

The biggest part of the project is taking the left side off of the K3 to
install the cable. If you have the K144XV installed, it needs to be removed.
If you have the KRX3 subreceiver, it can be left in place. You do *NOT* need
to remove the KRX3 module with all its cables.

Ed's time of 1.5 hrs sounds about right for someone working carefully and
methodically, doing the job for the first time. There's no soldering, of
course, but still a fair bit of mechanical disassembly/reassembly.

After doing it several times, I can probably do it in 30 minutes or a bit
less without rushing.

Do I need to do anything else to get rid of this or do I possibly have

[Elecraft] K3/10 in Attic Looking for Six Meters

2011-03-19 Thread Frank MacDonell
Maybe the cards are stacked against me, but I would like to go for the six
meter band ssb. My problem is low power and attic location for antennas.
Presently, I have a 66' piece of wire (center fed dipole) which works great
(for PSK, CW and JT65-HF) using the ATU in the K3. I would like to get the
group's opinion on antenna options or do I have to upgrade with the KPA100?
Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/10 in Attic Looking for Six Meters

2011-03-19 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Frank,

Before you consider higher power, get the antenna outside. Even 100
watts to an attic antenna can be problematic in some cases.

If you have no choice for the antenna, then go for the KPA100 but start
out at lower power levels to see what happens, devices plugged into the
house wiring often do not like the presence of RF and do crazy things,
and you can bet that the house wiring will pick up RF from the antenna.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/10 in Attic Looking for Six Meters

2011-03-19 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
A lot depends upon the composition of your roof. Some are rather opaque to
RF, and that goes up with frequency. Certain tile roofs are the worst, IMX.

OTOH, as Don points out, look at ways to get the antenna outside, even just
marginally outside. A full half wavelength is only 10 feet lone (well 9.36
for 50 MHz), so a decent radiator need be only 9.36 feet long and 10 feet or
so above the earth. Even if it can be only inches from some surface, such as
your roof, it'll likely be better than anything in side. And it can be very
thin wire almost impossible to see from a few feet away.

If you can do nothing, try the current antenna, assuming you have open wire
feeders to minimize the losses. That will at least give you a starting
point.

Re: [Elecraft] Installed K3EXREF

2011-03-19 Thread Paul Christensen
I installed it on Friday in about 30 minutes, but I'm comfortable with my
way around the K3. I would think that most users could install it in about
an hour or less. Installation is actually very simple with very few parts
involved. K3EXREF came with an SMA connector and SMA to BNC between-series
adapter.

Performance is exactly as promised by Elecraft. Although K3EXREF will not
phase lock the K3 to the external frequency source, I'm finding that it
stays within 1 Hz on 20m when locked to CHU at 14.670 MHz. I'm also
finding that testing for zero-beat to WWV at 10 MHz is not a good idea in my
shack, and perhaps yours too. There are many 10 MHz signals being emitted
by nearby appliances, LAN routers, security system, Ethernet boards, etc.
That common, even frequency is everywhere in a household these days.

In much of North America, CHU is an excellent source for testing since it
keeps cesium accuracy like WWV but the odd frequency of CHU is a real
benefit since the chance for beating against extraneous signals is much
smaller than at 10 MHz. Testing at a higher frequency rather than say the
MW broadcast band also provides for a reasonably good account of how the
K3EXREF performs. After installation, I would also suggest not trying to
test zero beat K3EXREF against commercial MW or SW BC stations since their
carriers are allowed to deviate much more than the cesium-based time and
frequency standards of CHU and WWV. Commercial AM broadcast station
frequencies are typically only accurate to about +/- 20 Hz although most are
better than that.

The K3's 49 MHz oscillator is only adjusted at intervals between 4 and 8
seconds by K3EXREF in order to minimize jitter. The K3 retains its original
phase noise performance since the external reference is not used internal to
the K3's frequency generating scheme. Think of it this way -- K3EXREF is
like lightly touching the 49 MHz oscillator with a feather every few seconds
if necessary to keep it within 1 Hz or so. Also, the K3 frequency stays
accurate even at the moment of powering up the K3. Kinda' fun to watch the
49 MHz oscillator display change during warm-up as it's being corrected and
compared against the external reference.

External references: There are three primary types, and all can be
purchased for less than USD $150 on the used market. Cesium standards (a
fourth type) are also available but are generally much more expensive,
complicated, and won't offer any benefit to K3 users since K3EXREF limits
resolution and accuracy to about 1 Hz.

The first type is the GPS Disciplined Oscillator (GPS-DO). This type of
standard locks itself onto the visible GPS satellites orbiting the sky.
Requires a GPS antenna and is self-calibrating to the GPS satellites. The
GPS-DO's time and frequency averages from the visible satellites, each
satellite having it's own on-board cesium-based oscillator. Long-term
accuracy is usually good to at least 1 x 10^-11. Extreme accuracy and only
a magnitude or two behind cesium. Look for Hewlett-Packard Z3801A, Z3816A,
Trimble Thunderbolt, Brandywine, Symmetricon, and Datum models. Short list,
but many others available.

Rubidium is the next type. No GPS tracking needed. Accuracy commensurate
with GPS-DO. No antenna required. Long-term performance is highly
dependent on the quality of the optical beam from the rubidium pump lamp.
Look for EF Efratom, Datum,

Third, is a high quality oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO).
Requires periodic calibration. Accuracy good to at least +/- 0.05 ppm and
offer the best phase noise performance among the three types of oscillators,
but as noted earlier, the excellent phase noise attributes of the OCXO will
not be carried over to the K3.

A shack reference oscillator is good for use with other equipment too (e.g.,
frequency counter). Although a bit lossy, I currectly use a Mini-Circuits
passive three-way splitter, but one can purchase a distribution amp to feed
many pieces of equipment from a single oscillator. Unlike the splitter, a
DA offers unity gain and very high port isolation.

Finally, be mindful that most GPS-DO and rubidium units use internal
switch-mode DC-DC converters. Switching noise was bad enough on two of my
units that I decided to gut the converters and used an outboard
triple-output linear supply. The Trimble Thunderbolts that have been
retired from the cellular industry require an external triple-output supply.
If choosing this model, get a linear type and avoid the headaches.

Get a friend (who has an un-infected PC) to download and burn the AVG
