[Elecraft] Weird Thing with K2
I just got a s/hand K2 and was going through the menus and after reading the manual and checking it's settings, I discover D19 is set ON, but the radio is not fitted with the K60XV option. so, I turn it OFF This caused my 40 metre output power level to drop to 4 watts out, even with the power knob set full on. Same thing with the ATU IN or OUT. Problem solved when I set D19 back ON. Re: [Elecraft] Weird Thing with K2
Jack, If that K2 has either the rework eliminators or the K60XV installed, you have to have D19 turned on. Sorry that you did not get full information from the prior owner. That happens frequently. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/16/2011 5:00 AM, Jack Chomley wrote: I just got a s/hand K2 and was going through the menus and after reading the manual and checking it's settings, I discover D19 is set ON, but the radio is not fitted with the K60XV option. so, I turn it OFF This caused my 40 metre output power level to drop to 4 watts out, even with the power knob set full on. Re: [Elecraft] Basic Info
Don, I just ran full QSK test on 10m this morning, up to 70 wpm, and both the K3 and the Alpha 9500 sounded very good to me, after resetting TX DLY down to 08. However I'm not sure how it would sound on the other end. Hopefully today, if I don't get flooded out of here (6 inches of rain yesterday and more rain this morning!), I'm going to hook up my IC-7700 and listen for myself. I am quite impressed with what I hear via the K3's sidetone. 73, Tom - W4BQF -Original Message- From: Don Wilhelm [mailto:w3...@embarqmail.com] Sent: Friday, July 15, 2011 9:03 PM To: Tommy Alderman Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Basic Info Tom, I know nothing about that particular amplifier, but I offer a few in general facts. Re: [Elecraft] Basic Info
Last time I looked at Waddle K. Knowitall's Authoritative Real Meanings Dictionary, 70 wpm, indeed 50 wpm was QRQ all the way. If you want QSK, you should set the TX DLY to minimum 8 and leave it there forever. I don't like the way it behaves at higher delays anyway. If you want to keep RX from opening in certain contesting situations, do it with the logging program and it's PTT setting and pipe the logger supplied PTT signal around. You will find that your 9500 and the K3 are slick together. You CAN use the CW+ fast QSK, but this is a fight in the K3 against RX-TX-RX transition tasks. e.g. CPU time in the firmware, and in order to be really fast some functions are disabled. You will need to decide if the disabled functions are things you can do without. 73, Guy. I did drop TX DLY from 20 down to 8 and with the K3 barefoot, it sounds pretty darned good. In the morning I will try this with the Alpha 9500 amp; every time I try it (on 20m), many Eu stations want a 'QSO'. Anyway I am getting close, both at 30 wpm and I just tested with TX DLY set for 8, and at 60 wpm it sounds good. Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Serial Port Connections on KPA500
Thanks, Bruce. The KPA Utility (which also provides firmware load functions) currently offers remote control capability on its Operate page. You can effectively press the KPA500 front panel on/off button, switch between tune operate, change bands, and monitor the current PA voltage, current, temperature, output power, and SWR. The KPA Utility monitors continuously for fault data, displays the most recent current fault should it occur, and provides a way to clear the current fault. Other pages on the KPA Utility provide access to historic fault data, decoded from binary values to engineer English. Remote use requires a PC and serial port connected directly to the KPA500, typically an internet connection to the PC near the KPA500, and some sort of remote desktop software that allows you to operate one computer from another. I've used Microsoft's Remote Desktop built into modern versions of Windows for this, and there are other remote desktop offerings such as PC Anywhere, GoToMyPC, PCNow, Laplink's Everywhere and I'm sure many more. [Elecraft] K2 on digital modes questions
I just added the SSB board to my K2 and it seems to be working great. (I made a 40-meter QSO and was given a report of nice crisp audio.) I'm not an SSB operator and my real goal for adding this option is to be able to work some of the digital modes. I have 3 quick questions... 1. Is there any advantage to using the RTTY mode as opposed to the SSB mode on the K2? 2. If I use the RTTY mode, do I need to change the filter settings? Currently they show 2.2, 2.0, 1.8, and 1.6 as default values without any setup from me. (I setup my SSB filters to OP1, OP1, 1.8, and 0.7 with the thought that the 0.7 might be useful in some digital situations.) 3. I configured my K2 microphone connector for an Icom HM-12 microphone (the only one that I own) which requires a small bias voltage on AF through a 10k resistor. Is this bias voltage likely to cause me any trouble when I hook up my interface (a Rascal from K4ABT)? ... Actually, I think that I have already answered this question by looking at the schematic for the Rascal interface. The AF connects through a capacitor to an audio level pot across an isolation transformer. That capacitor should block the DC bias so I don't think that I will need to reconfigure the microphone connector in the K2. Does this make sense? Thank you ahead of time for any and all comments to any of my questions! 73, Paul - N8XMS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Serial Port Connections on KPA500
Dan: The PC-P3-K3 connection is used because the P3 gets frequency, IF bandwidth, RIT offset and other data from the K3 very frequently. Logging programs also require a PC connection to the K3. Hence the need for the daisy chain. The P3 passes command / response data through from one serial port to another, adding its own command / response stream to the P3 to K3 part of the chain. The KPA500 gets band data from the K3 via the band change lines on 15-pin ACC connector. The KPA500 communicates its band switching preference to the K3 via the AUXBUS line of the 15-pin ACC connector, so that the K3 changes bands when you press band buttons on the KPA500 front panel. None of the K3/KPA500 integration uses serial ports. There's no need or advantage to daisy chain the serial port. The KPA500 does not pass thru commands and responses between the two serial port connectors, as you have discovered experimentally. The KPA500 uses its XCVR serial connector for firmware load, configuration save/restore, fault analysis and remote control of the amplifier; these are functions of the KPA Utility. A serial port command set has been published that permits others to write KPA500 remote control software as well. As N1RX correctly stated, the KPA500's XCVR serial connector is for radios that provide frequency information via a serial port, primarily Kenwood. Band change information from the K3 isn't needed for the KPA500 if you don't mind that the first dit or ahh (or hola) on the new band is shortened. When my prototype KPA500 didn't yet have band change via the parallel port, I'd just tune the radio to the new band, tap the paddle, and the amp was ready to go on the new band. My K3 to KPA500 connection consisted of the RF cable and an RCA connection between the K3's Key Out and the KPA500 PA Key connectors. I didn't connect ALC. This still works today. The ACC line connection between K3 and KPA500 does offer one additional operational advantage: The K3 retains two different power levels for each band, one for use when the KPA500 is in operation, and another when it's off. So I can set the K3 power level to transmit at 100 watts when the amplifier is switched off and about 30-35 watts from the K3 to the KPA500 when the amplifier is in Operate, and I don't have to remember to change the K3 power each time I turn the amplifier on. The K3 learns that the KPA500 is or isn't operating via AUXBUS communication over the 15-pin ACC cable. The amplifier keying connection and ALC line also go through the 15-pin ACC connection, which makes for a straightforward installation requiring just two cables between radio and amplifier, the 15-pin ACC cable and the RF output of the transceiver. I haven't played with ALC, I just keep the K3's power where it belongs. But the ALC connection is there. Some antenna tuners and SWR monitor devices offer a relay to interrupt the amplifier key line when SWR exceeds a threshold. If you want to use this capability, use an RCA connector keying line daisy chain from radio to SWR bridge/ATU to KPA500. The KPAK3AUX cable kit includes a small key line interrupter that looks like an DB-9 gender changer with a pin removed so that the key line from K3 to KPA500 through the ACC cable is interrupted. The KPAK3AUX accessory connector cable option kit also includes an all-15-pins-connected Y cable so that you can concurrently connect additional devices to the K3's ACC connector. Some cables and Y connectors sold for VGA monitor applications do not have all pins connected straight thru. I use a 4-port 9-pin serial ABCD switch box connected to an Elecraft KUSB USB-to-Serial Adapter connected to my development computer as common, and the four serial port outputs from this ABCD switch go to one of two K3s, a KPA500, and a 3.5mm serial data cable that I plug into a W2, XG3, or K144XV, depending on what I'm doing. I may in the future add another layer of switching so that 3.5mm data cables can be connected to a W2, other products in development, and a free cable for use with the XG3 or K144XV. I use a KUSB rather than a multi-port serial PCI card because I need to very frequently test the various utilities through the USB to Serial adapters that Elecraft sells, and I use relatively long and convoluted RS-232 paths so that I develop and test with a less than ideal short direct connection. Absent this requirement, I'd use a 4- or 8-port PCI serial card like a Rocket Port and use USB to Serial adapters only when I had no other choice. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Dan Atchison Sent: Saturday, July 16, 2011 7:13 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Serial Port Connections on KPA500 Team: Now that I have completed my KPA500 (S/N 196) I have a question regarding serial port connections. [Elecraft] KPA500 Fan Question
Just did the first voltage test on #153. Basically I turned it on to check that the tap is the right one, then turned it off. The fan ran for over 15 min before I turned it on again (which shuts the fan down) How long should it go before shutting down? Repeated the procedure and tapped temp and it showed 23.5 C and the fan does not run while in Standby, but it comes on again when I tap the power button. Still running as I type. Is this adjustable? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Fan Question
Jay, When you turn the KPA500 off the fan should run until it drains the high voltage from the power supply capacitors, which takes about ten seconds on my KPA500 #119. It should not run for 15 minutes. I would send an email to the support address listed on the Elecraft web site regarding that behavior. It is normal for the fan the be off when the amp is turned on. The default setting on the fan is for the fan to stay off until the RF devices begin to warm up. The fan will change speeds as the temperature of the devices rise. Since the fan is a major part of the KPA500's protection I would not operate the KPA500 until that behavior has been corrected. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Sat, 16 Jul 2011 13:31:30 -0700, Jay livn2g...@q.com wrote: Just did the first voltage test on #153. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Fan Question
As the manual says, it should run for a while to drain the power supply voltage to a safe level, then it simply slows to a stop. But 15 minutes is definitely over the top - something isn't shutting down the power supply when you tap the POWER button (typically the fan will run for 30 seconds or so, IIRC). That also means that dangerous voltage exist inside the KPA500 even with the mains plug pulled. As with all things microprocessor or microcontroller controlled these days, the first thing to do is reload the firmware and see if that cures it. Did you build it from a kit? I wonder if having the ribbon cables that runs from the front panel board to the I/O board on the rear panel, or the smaller ribbon cable between the I/O board and the power supply module installed incorrectly might cause this, since the signaling obviously must follow that path. Re: [Elecraft] Heil Pro Micro with K3
Paul, The K3 has a full array of controls for using most any microphone element. There is a wide range mic level control with both high and low ranges, and you may select to have bias turned on or off as the mic requires. In addition, you may use either the front (8 pin) microphone jack, or the rear panel 3.5mm stereo jack (the microphone is monaural, but use a stereo plug anyway - the jack is stereo. The only limitation is that for the front panel jack, the plug must conform to the Elecraft pinout - it is Kenwood compatible - which says that most, but all Kenwood wired mics will work, the exception being that those who depend on +8 volts at pin 5 will have trouble, Elecraft places +8 volts on pin 6 instead of pin 5. So bottom line is that you can use most any microphone sucessfully with the K3 as long as the mic plug is wired correctly. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/16/2011 7:31 PM, Paul Urie wrote: Are there any problems with using the Heil Pro Micro headset with the HC-6 element with the K3? My KPA500 S/N 165 kit, received July 13th was finally finished today at 2:45 p.m. . Jumped right into the CWT ops contest at 3:00 p.m. and ran the amp full power for an hour. Worked just fine. Ran 482 watts on 20 meters using a 3 el stepper. Stayed pretty steady at 482.. Tracking with my K3 worked perfectly using the aux cable. Just finished using the Y cable to integrate the MicroHam KII and writelog. No problems noted. Building the kit: No unusual problems. I just took my time. I was not in a rush. Made a couple of dumb mistakes. I got a bit wrapped up over the length of the 10 standoffs used to attach the front front panel circuit board to the front panel. I'm sure Dale Farmer is scratching his head after a couple of emails that I sent to him. Those Elecraft guys must have a ton of patience dealing with email questions. All questions were answered within a couple of hours. Great job guys. I just wasn't reading the parts list properly. Like the K3 build, the KPA500 went together without a hitch. I'm sure this is old news to many K3 users with the K144XV installed in their K3 but as Wayne mentioned quite some time ago on this reflector the K144XV 'Rocks'. I have never operated 2 meter SSB before and had the pleasure of installing the 2 meter option to a friends new K3. The install was straight forward and I again marveled at the thought put into the design and placement of the K144XV in the K3. I downloaded the latest firmware after I setup the phase lock calibration and tuned the band. Mind you I had a 2 foot handitalkie whip on the K3. I turned to the 2 meter calling frequency and low and behold there was a friend talking to a guy about 50 miles north of us. Guess what? I could copy both sides of the conversation and when I broke to call my friend he told me to stand by and when he came back he introduced me to the other party of the qso. I didn't think there was anyway that this guy in Wyoming could copy me but he was copying me 100% about an S5. Needless to say I was shocked. Granted he had a tall tower and 11 element 2 meter antenna pointed my way but still...There I was with a dinky little vertical whip sitting in my basement running 10 watts and talking with this guy 50 miles to the north in another state. The bug struck and now I too ordered the internal 2 meter option for my K3 SN 176. Who knows maybe I'll get into moon bounce, ha. Anyone have any suggestions for a 2 meter amplifier for the station? [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, I keep hearing about warm weather and sunny skies but it is so rare here I can count the days over 70 degrees on the fingers on one hand with some left over. Most days this week I have had to start a fire to stay warm. Today it got all the way up to 56 degrees. Luckily the nightly lows are getting warmer too. Last night it was only 50 degrees instead of in the mid 40s. It has been raining for the better part of the last three days. I wish the dry season would get here and summer would start. However, not all is gloomy and cold. The propagation has become incrementally better. Enough so I could have a few longer skeds on 20 meters. The wish is for continued improvement. Maybe the sun will break with predictions and become more active. It would be best if the solar wind would kick into high gear and create numerous auroral displays. It is easier to deal with auroral flutter than it is to listen to a sparsely populated band. If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. I will turn the net over to you for a few minutes so you can call areas in my skip zone. It sure would prove helpful to those I cannot reach directly. Hey all! As I am looking at all the documentation that goes along with my K2 (10W) and it's options, I have to ask myself this question: What have I gotten myself into??? I am not a novice kit builder...I have built a K1-4, two other Wilderness Radio QRP radios (Wayne's early work), and some other station gear. However, I think the K2 is by far the most complex kit build I will ever do. I don't think anything else comes close to it except for the Sienna. Well, I know I can do this! It is going to be a lot of fun! I will be snapping some pics of the build and posting them to my Facebook page. Since I cannot attach files to these E-mails, I will attach the link to the photo album for anyone who is interested once I start working on it hopefully starting this week. 73, David, KC9EHQ K2 s/n 7164 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] What have I gotten myself into???
David... It's no more difficult than one solder joint at a time. Yes, there are a lot of parts, but again, just one part at a time. Watching the Elecraft come on the dial the first time is a thrill hard to beat. Have fun. ...robert #5957 On 7/17/2011 04:09, David Dietrich wrote: Hey all!
