Re: [Elecraft] k144XV Rocks--Indeed...

2011-07-17 Thread John Ragle
Hi, Steve...

I beg pardon for using the reflector, since this is more or less
cracker-barrel and store-front stove stuff, but your comments remind me
of years ago when I first tried 2 meters. I heard this weak CW signal
down in the noise on my vertical antenna/10 watt rig. the guy was down
in Connecticut, about a 50 mile run for me, and he kept telling me "turn
your beam toward me..." He was one of the (then) big guns in EME, and
made me realize that there was something besides noise and FM on 2 meters.

I went out the next day and bought an antenna -- a REAL antenna, a
10 element collinear array with horizontal polarization -- and then
discovered that there's lots of activity on 2.

The message is (like the real estate guys say...) antenna, antenna,
and antenna! I am using a 10 element Yagi from Cushcraft, up about 35
feet at the present time. It was on a guyed flagpole with a TV rotator
at first, but has now graduated to a better set-up...details are not too
important.

I routinely work 100-200 mile distances on tropo scatter, and have
worked into the Gulf coast, the Mississippi basin, and the upper Great
Lakes area on SSB and CW when there is either a tropo duct or
sporadic-E. In your location, there are probably not many tropo duct
openings, but you can monitor

http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html
and
http://www.vhfdx.info/spots/map.php?Lan=E&Frec=50&ML=M&Map=NA

for further information.

One comment: if propagation is good, then 10 watts will carry you
quite a ways. For routine tropo scatter, a bit more power helps, but
then one is into "heavy equipment." I am using a TE Systems amplifier
and a 70-amp Astron power supply, but there is a wide range of other,
equally-good, solutions.

The K144XV is a good exciter. I am using its older brother, an
XV144, from the same fine source at Elecraft. It gets along just fine
with my K3.

Don't neglect the CW portion of 2 meters. CW is a great weak-signal
mode. People seem to hang around just below the USB calling frequency.

And, don't forget about 6 meters ... same comment about antenna!
... from here during the summer season Europe is more or less routine in
the morning: I just worked Spain and the Canary Islands with S7-S8
signals on 6. Your location gives you a tremendous advantage WRT working
all states, as you are more or less central. I despair of working KL7 or
KH6 on 2 from here, except by EME, unless Ole Sol does something
spectacular.

Have fun, and learn a whole new aspect of our wonderful hobby!

whip sitting in my basement running 10 watts and talking with this guy 50 miles
to the north in another state. The bug struck and now I too ordered the
internal 2 meter option for my K3 SN 176. Who knows maybe I'll get into moon

station? Thanks again Elecraft for putting the fun back into the hobby. Best

[Elecraft] low power on 6 meters

2011-07-17 Thread Robert Garceau
I have seen this issue posted before, but no answers that I can see.

I have a K3 and the output is no more than 52 watts with an swr of
1.23..sometime get it up to 62.

Now I have the KPA500 and using 40 watts to exite the amp, I get just a tad
over 425 watts.

Don't think I want to push it over 40 watts. And to be honest there probably
isn't much difference between 425 and 500, but would like to know why I
can't get the 100 like I should..

[Elecraft] K3/P3 interaction?

2011-07-17 Thread Tommy Alderman
I'm trying to re-familiarize myself with my P3, which is running with MCU v.
01.09.

With Mkr A and/or B turned on, if I adjust the 'offset' control on my K3
(and RIT/XIT is not ON), VFO B cursor and Mkr B randomly jumps across the P3
screen. If I turn RIT or XIT ON, the P3 VFO B and Mkr B seem to operate
normally (meaning they no longer jump around the screen).

I haven't finished going through the P3 manual yet, but is there some
setting to prevent the random cursor/marker from jumping around the P3
screen?

Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY with morse key

2011-07-17 Thread Jim Sheldon
This is exactly how it's supposed to operate. There IS a character which you
can send from the paddles to make it switch out of transmit and that is dit dit
dah dah sent as one character (dididadah) that will switch immediately back to
receive. The "Idle" is called "diddle" in the RTTY world and is either
continuous "letters shift" or "blank" characters which were used to keep the
mechanical decoders on real teletype machines active and introduce less
distortion, thus cause less missed characters during the receiving of slow
typing.

Welcome to the world of RTTY. There is a free program out there dedicated to
RTTY that works very well with the K3 and others called MMTTY, written a few
years ago by a Japanese ham, Mako Mori, JE3HHT. It has, probably the best FFT
decoding algorithm for RTTY available and once you get it set up it works right
down almost to the noise (just like the K3). Google MMTTY and get version
1.68a which is the latest.

You might want to also look at W3YY's website and think about the little
interface he has available. It isn't cheap, about 30 bucks shipped, but it's
an opto isolated PTT, CW and FSK keying interface (only for transmit) that will
interface the computer to the K3 (needs a second RS-232 port) for sending true
FSK (that way the dial freq in FSK-D) will match the MARK frequency on RTTY.
Also, the international standard for RTTY is to send it using LSB or it will be
sent inverted and you will have to use RTTY Reverse in the program to copy.
The W3YY interface hooks up to FSK, PTT and Ground using the 15 pin VGA style
plug on the back of the K3, the CW out of the YY would plug in to the Hand Key
jack on the back of the K3.

I've no fianancial connection to W3YY, but have been using one of the
interfaces ever since getting the K3 and since I operate a lot of RTTY, it
makes things much easier.

What have you gotten yourself into? Probably more fun than you deserve. HI!
Don't get in a hurry, read each step two or three times, install the part,
double
check to make sure it is in the right spot and orientated right and solder.

I had not soldered anything more difficult than a PL259 on a piece of coax
in
20 years when I got my K2. A little solder practice and then a blast to see
the
radio come to life. After 10 years, it is still a thrill every time I turn
it on.

Enjoy the journey.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 Perfect condition at eBay

2011-07-17 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Levent,

On your eBay ad stating "all modifications" I notice that the upgraded DSP
board with low pass filter has not been included. Certainly S/N 1230 did not
include the new board.

This is not a negative comment on your sale but I have noticed this before
on K3 sales. Is it possible that when an owner sends his K3 back to the
factory and requests "all" hardware mods, Elecraft doesn't mention the DSP
upgrade.

I found the mod listed on the following page
http://www.elecraft.com/order_form_parts.htm#K3%20Parts
I see that the full board swap costs $110 and if only the low pass filter is
desired the cost is $40.

Bob, do you have an amplifier in line on 6 meters?  I have noticed that my

does not do this on the lower bands.  You can easily find out by taking the

not be your problem, but it is mine.

[Elecraft] K2 Problem in NAQP

2011-07-17 Thread Jim Harris
Hi Folks,

I ran into a problem during the just completed NAQP RTTY contest with my
Elecraft K2.  To make a very long and frustrating story short, on at least 20
and 40 meters it receives on the lower side band but transmits on the upper
sideband.   On 15 meters it receives and transmits on the same sideband which
appears to be the lower sideband.  The only way I was able to get it to
transmit on the same sideband on the two bands mentioned was to put the radio
into RTTY reverse (with CW REV) and then operate MMTTY in REV.  As a result of
the problem I lost about three hours in the contest while troubleshooting the
problem.  If someone can shed (and I'm sure they can) some light on this
perplexity, I would very much appreciate it.

This was my first serious attempt to do SO2R.  I used my K3 for the right radio
and the K2 for the left.  I had aligned the RTTY filters in the K2 using the
procedures found on the internet and used Spectogram.  I tried to be careful to
set them on the correct sideband.  I can accept that maybe I didn't get that
done right and will recheck them.  But, I don't understand why the upper band
is correct and the lower bands are not.

BTW, I ran both radio's pretty hard at 100 watts and neither overheated.  The
K3 takes care of itself very well.  I think one could go near brick down for
several minutes and it would be fine.  I used a hand held, point at an object,
temp sensor with the K2 and the highest heat sink temp I measured was about 100
F..usually it was 10-20 degrees lower.  I have manually adjustable variable
speed four inch muffin fans mounted about three inches above each radio and ran
them continuously at about half speed during the contest.  With a little
external help I see no problem in running the K2 at 100 watts FB in RTTY
contesting.

Thanks for all the commits I'm sure I will receive.

Take pride in the USA. 73

Re: [Elecraft] Looking for miniature 14-V power supply for travel use

2011-07-17 Thread AD6XY
Hi Wayne,

I expect you are back by now. However it might still be of interest. I have
been using laptop type supplies for this application. Light, small, cheap
and some of them are relatively quiet. They will also fit in a small metal
box. Recently I came across LED lighting supplies, 12V again and similar to
laptops except they come with standard 2.1mm plugs.

For quiet and off grid applications, I use LiPo batteries, 3 or 4 cell. For
the KX3, 3 cells will do and can be re-charged with a cheap balance charger.
I have a small one to hand, 20x40x100mm 2.2Ah and a 4AH 4 cell 20x50x120mm.

My own application is powering portable microwave gear, but 12V is
universal. Fusing is essential of course as these cells will happily deliver
60Amps. They have a reputation for danger if you miss-charge them. But
people still fill up their cars with gasolene to go on holiday and that is
much more dangerous.

Mike

I notice high swr when my AL572 is in the antenna circuit - even when turned

line all the time.

[Elecraft] Headset recommendation for the K3

2011-07-17 Thread todd brady
Hello to all on the list
I'm a relatively new K3 owner, and this is my first post to the group. I
purchased my K3 back in March ( SN# 5331 ) and just recently purchased the P3 (
SN# 1435 ).
First of all let me say the customer service is hands down the best I've ever
experienced, and the user group has been a wonderful help to me, as I learn the
art of operating my K3 !!
I enjoy both SSB and CW although I don't ragchew using CW, I do chase and
work DX in that mode.
I have tried various headsets with my K3 including the Yamaha, that so many
here on the list recommend.
I have found a new headset that I like better than any I have tried, and I just
wanted to recommend it to the group.
I enjoy both SSB DXing and contesting and this headset is great for all SSB
applications.
It's the " Turtle Beach / Ear Force Z1 " ... Its a light weight gaming headset
designed for PC's and it's only $29.95 ... I picked it up at Walmart. The sound

Re: [Elecraft] K2 & P3 Question

2011-07-17 Thread Alan Bloom
AFAIK there are no plans to modify the K2 firmware to work with the P3,
but there are plans to modify the P3 firmware to work with the K2. It
will never be as closely-integrated as the K3, but most of the features
should work, including readout of the K2 frequency on the P3, click to
QSY, accurate amplitude display, etc. The main feature that won't work
is fixed-tune mode.

It's on the list.

Re: [Elecraft] low power on 6 meters

2011-07-17 Thread WILLIS COOKE
The input circuit is bypassed by the relay so the only thing in the path is the
relay, coax connectors and the wires.  I think it is the wires.  I have no such
difficulty on 10 meters.  My amp is the Dentron Clipperton L with the AD5X QSK
mod.  The connecting wires are about 2.5 inches long.  The QSK mod works great
on low bands when the amp is on.  The relay noise is less than the fan noise
and
it has survived several thousand QSOs with no problem other than 6 meters.  The
Dentron is the predecessor to the AL572 with the same tube lineup and a bit
more
compact layout.

I notice high swr when my AL572 is in the antenna circuit - even when turned
off.  When I hook the coax directly to the K3, the swr is 1:1. Haven't figured
out why except maybe there is a low pass filter built in the amp that is in
line
all the time.

Many thanks for posting your find, Todd. Thanks to the size of the
market, there are hundreds of low cost headsets made for use with
computers -- everything from gaming to Skype to listening to music. If
you are able to sell in quantity, it's much easier to get the cost down.
That's why we have the excellent Yamaha headset at such a low price, as
well as the one you found. Someone on the Ten Tec list found a Koss
headset that he liked a lot. Several months ago, I went shopping at
Fry's for low cost headsets to use with Skype. I found a half dozen or
so priced between $10 and $25, and I bought three that looked promising.
All three "worked," but none was really comfortable, and one set was
like having my head in a vise. Quite a few years ago, I bought a
Plantronics salesman's sample kit at the Milwaukee hamfest and made
connector adapters to hook them up to my computers and ham gear. All of
them worked, but only one was comfortable enough to use for more than an
occasional phone call.

The beauty of the K3 is that, thanks to its flexibility, it can work
quite well with almost anything that we can plug into it!

Many of these amplifiers use open frame relays and long connecting
wires for the T/R (bypass) switching function. The inductance of
the wires/long relay contacts causes a significant impedance bump
on six meters (and to a lesser extent on 10 meters).

If you want to to resolve the problem connect a small capacitor from
the "bypass wire" (the connection between the two normally closed
relay contacts) to ground/chassis. You will need to experiment -
or use a trimmer - the capacitor value will be small, typically less
than 10 pF.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Problem in NAQP

2011-07-17 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Jim,

I suspect you have the sidebands inverted in your RTTY filter set.

Do the following with the K2 set to a band lower than 15 meters,

First set the FL1 filter to use the OP1 filter on the KSB2 board, and
that filter along with its BFO settings will be used for transmit. Set
RTTY the same as your SSB FL1 settings - the BFO setting for RTTY should
be the same as LSB, and the RTTYr BFO should be the same as USB.

The other filters are created from the variable bandwidth filter. I
usually set FL2 to 1.00, FL3 to 0.70, FL4 to 0.40, and center these 3
filters at 1000 Hz. - use Spectrogram
MMTTY mark frequency is set at 915 Hz to be compatible.

Check the BFO frequencies for RTTY and RTTYr - normally the RTTY BFO
frequency will be in the vicinity of 4914.xx and the RTTYr BFO will be
near 4912.xx if you are using 1000 Hz as the center frequency.

Higher center frequencies may be possible, but you may run into
difficulty with limits of the BFO range for RTTYr.

The K2 reverses its mixing scheme on 15 meters and above - below 15
meters the VFO and BFO subtract while on 15 and above the VFO and BFO
add. The K2 automatically swaps sidebands for you, but it will not come
out right on all bands if the sidebands have been inverted in the filter
settings.

[Elecraft] Elecraft FTDI N1MM

I noticed that Elecraft if now offering a FTDI cable. When I bought my K3 they
only had a Prolific cable. It works fine for downloading Elecraft updates but
have never been able to get it working on N1MM. Wonder if anyone has used the
FTDI cable offered by Elecraft to control their K3 via N1MM? Everything I read
points toward using FTDI type cables with the K3/N1MM combo. 73 Mike K4PI

Looks like Elecraft has busted through the early April log jam of initial

ship within 3 weeks. Good news for everyone waiting for a KPA500 kit.

I would ask if the relays inside the amps are coaxial relays or

amps. So it works up to 30-MHz but SWR is high on 50-MHz. Well
perhaps you have heard the VHFers refer to HF as the "dc

not constant impedance and that works OK on HF, for the most

high-quality coaxial relays in their home-built amplifiers with
bypass lines of RG-58 or even RG-8.

Look inside and see if the relays are "good ole dc relays"? I have a
Mirage A1015G 150w 6m amp and guess what the impedance is when in
bypass? SWR=1.4 even when I have a 50-ohm termination connected to
the output of the amplifier. Connect the termination directly to the
coax line that connects K3 to Mirage and SWR=1.0 Fortunately, I have
an antenna tuner for 160-6m and I tweak out the mismatch when Mirage
is off-line. Input to the Mirage when on-line is 1.5 so I tune the
input using the antenna tuner. The antenna SWR= 1.06 so the Mirage
is happy without need of the tuner.

Suspect those relays! If the bypass is simple buss wire that too
will not match well at VHF.

Re: [Elecraft] low power on 6 meters

2011-07-17 Thread WILLIS COOKE

The relays in most amps are open frame and definitely not designed for six
meters.  Mine is an aftermarket kit designed for an AL600 and modified by me to
work on a boat anchor Dentron Clipperton L amplifier.  I am just offering a
suggestion about what might be causing the problem, not looking for a solution
from someone.  The elegant solution is to buy a KPA-500 that is designed to go
with the K3 instead of using a Boat Anchor designed to work with a TS-520 or an
FT-101.  The easy solution is to turn on the KAT-3 or to not look at the SWR on
the K3.  The other solution is to disconnect the coax from the AMP and put in a
barrel connector.  As for me, I have another 500 buro QSLs to answer today, so
I
must be getting out.

coax line that connects K3 to Mirage and SWR=1.0  Fortunately, I have
an antenna tuner for 160-6m and I tweak out the mismatch when Mirage
is off-line.

Re: [Elecraft] order form questions

2011-07-17 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The KXV3a provides the IF tap needed for a panadapter (as well as Rx Antenna
and transverter I/O).

You only need a KUSB if you require a USB to Serial Adapter. If your
computer has an RS-232 serial port (typically DB-9), you don't need a new
KUSB. You will need a "straight thru" 9-pin serial cable to connect from
your PC to the 9-pin D shell serial connector on the back of the K3.
Details and pictures of the cables are in K3 Utility Help. You can install
the K3 Utility and view its Help File ahead of time.

Your list is fine for "up and running".

I don't know what the free 144OPT100 is, either. I put together a
tentative order with a K3/100, KAT3-F, KXV3A, MH2, P3-K and didn't see a
144OPT100.

please clarify what you mean when you say:
"not seen them appear on the list"

where/how are you looking to see if they are being posted?

are you referring to on your own computer, in it's email client?

or perhaps archives of the list online?

[Elecraft] Digitally signed email to the Reflector

2011-07-17 Thread Dick Roth
I have sent a couple of messages to the Reflector that have earned me
the bounce message below. I believe it is because I digitally sign my
email using PGP. Can anyone verify that this is the cause and why it
should be so?

This message is sent without my digital signature, so I think I won't
get the bounce message.

Thanks for any explanation.

Hi guy's,
I hope you can see this as I won't.
"Why's that?" you ask, because I too use GMail's email service and I have NEVER
seen my own postings to ANY mailing list whilst I continue to use a GMail
account for posting.
I have raised the issue with GMail and to date there has been a deafening
silence in reply.
So, I just accept the fact now that I cannot see my own postings to the
reflector, not that it worries me greatly because I can see them in my sent
items folder.
I use MS Outlook Express for sending email via pop3 on GMail. (It aint too
flash, but it is free and is well integrated into the OS of choice that I use.

Re: [Elecraft] Test

2011-07-17 Thread Dave Wright
For mailing lists, Gmail typically does NOT reflect back whatever you post to
the list.

It automatically filters out the posts that you send to avoid duplication in
your gmail mailbox. Every list I belong to is the same way; I subscribe to them
using Gmail and I never get my posts back, but they are posted to the mailing
list. However, if you go to the online version of the mailing list, you'll see
that your posts are getting through.

[Elecraft] K2 modification of the variable BW Cohn CW crystal filter

2011-07-17 Thread Stephen Rector
I ve been using me K2 (s/n 6770) in the digital modes lately and have wanted to
make an improvement in the passband ripple, which is almost 10 dB p-p when the
BW is set at 2 KHz, with the RX audio viewed spectrally. So I simulated the
filter using the crystal parameters given here:
http://www.arrl.org/files/file/QEX_Next_Issue/Nov-Dec_2009/QEX_Nov-Dec_09_Feature.pdf
, using the spice simulator Qucs at http://qucs.sourceforge.net . The
simulation agrees with the measured passband when I set the termination
impedances between 200-300 ohms, with the ripple being more pronounced as the
impedance is lowered.

I found a reference on the web to a modification of the Cohn filter which
preserves the equal capacitances and crystal parameters for all elements,
documented by G3UUR and described (page 5) here:
http://www.warc.org.uk/filestore/projects/xtal_bpf_203/eDishalHelp.pdf . I
haven't gone into the mathematics of this alteration, but the effect of placing
a crystal in parallel with X7 and X11 is a de-Q-ing of these two elements and
substantial reduction of ripple at the passband edges. This effect is
apparently not unknown to Wayne, who uses it in the BFO resonator and
considered it for increasing the pullability of the PLL reference. I don't have
the 2010 ARRL Handbook, but G3UUR has an article in it describing his
modification of the Cohn ladder response.

So - the mod I tried in simulation was to place a crystal in parallel with X7
and X11, and to replace the coupling varicaps D29 and D34 with 4700pF fixed
caps. The varicaps D30-33 are untouched. My simulation results:

K2 design:
With Cvc = 44pF:

6dB BW = 2.07 KHz, 60 dB BW = 4.55 KHz, ripple = 9 dB p-p, shape factor = 2.2.

With Cvc = 200 pF:

6dB BW = 0.57 KHz, 60 dB BW = 1.52 KHz, ripple = 1.5 dB p-p, shape factor =
2.67.

Modified K2 design, G3UUR topology:
With Cvc = 56pF:

6dB BW = 2.03 KHz, 60 dB BW = 5.31 KHz, ripple = 3 dB p-p, shape factor = 2.61.

With Cvc = 205 pF:

6dB BW = 0.57 KHz, 60 dB BW = 1.96 KHz, ripple = 0.5 dB p-p, shape factor =
3.50.

So it looks like I get a substantial reduction in passband ripple and a flatter
group delay with the modification, at the cost of a bit of increase in the
shape factor. If I used the K2 strictly for CW or psk31, I might not want to
make a change. But I use wider digital modes like Olivia where group delay
distortion can make a difference in BER. So I think I'm going to try the mod.
Don has suggested in the past to narrow down the passband when using the
digital modes, but this makes enough of a difference above 1 KHz BW (and I see
surrounding signals in the waterfall), that this mod is worth a try. I'm
curious if anyone on the list has considered it.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 modification of the variable BW Cohn CW crystal filter

2011-07-17 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Stephen,

If you are doing mostly digital modes and not too much SSB, you might
want to change the OP1 filter instead. The SSBCAPKT contains capacitors
to make it either a 1.9k, 2.1k, 2.4k or 2.6k filter.

Re: [Elecraft] order form questions

2011-07-17 Thread Jim Rhodes
Under the K144XV option there is a checkbox for K3/10 or K3/100. If you
check one of these boxes the system thinks that you are ordering the K144XV
and need the appropriate rear panel. The 144OPT100 is the rear panel for use
with the K144XV option on a 100 watt K3. Just don't check that box as you
don't seem to be ordering the internal 2 meter transverter.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Problem in NAQP

2011-07-17 Thread Jim Harris
Don,

That was the leading suspect in my mind.  But I tried very hard to assure they
were correct when I set them up.  I still don't grasp why the upper band was
correct and the lower were opposite.  I realize there is an inversion of side
bands up there but I thought it was a simple inversion which to me means they
should have behaved as did the lower but maybe opposite from the lower on
receive and transmit.

I will follow your instructions and see how they work out.  As always,  thank
you for your assistance.

Take pride in the USA. 73

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (7/17/11)

Propagation was so-so today, but QRM from a nearby QSO was a problem.
Temperatures were hot all over the mid-west and east, even in Maine. No
discussions followed check-ins. We had 20 participants over a 22 minute
period. Have a good week.

Here is the list of participants.

Re: [Elecraft] What have I gotten myself into???

2011-07-17 Thread Tom McCulloch
It took me about 80 to 100 hours - spread over 6 to 9 months -- but that
was just my own pace...if I would have done it in 6 to nine weeks it
undoubtedly would have gone quicker. I took my time and enjoyed it.

Lots of guys on this list can offer lots of top notch advice based on
their own experiences -- my 2 cents is as follows: I like to check each
solder connection to make sure I don't have a cold solder joint or put
the lead in the wrong hole -- so to facilitate this I made a photocopy
of each of the PC boards so I could easily check the traces...If 6,000
guys built a K2 (what s/n are they up to anyway?), you'll get 6,000
building different tips -- and they'll all be good! This is a fun kit
to build and this list list is a great resource---have fun

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for July 17th & 18th, 2011

2011-07-17 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Twenty meters was very nice today. Twelve checkins over a period of
about 40 minutes. Much nicer than last week's skunk :) Most of the
signals were quite strong while a few of the eastern stations had some
QSB. Some of the southern stations had fast and slow QSB which made life
a little interesting. But hearing folks is much nicer than calling CQ
while reading a magazine!
Weather reports for the most part were much warmer. Only Brian down in
California came close to my 55 degrees. I just went for a short walk and
there was a warm breeze off the coast. Not warm enough to put out the
fire but it is better than the rain and 45 degree nights I have had
lately. Last night I had a mosquito flying around the keyboard but it was
not very aggressive so it is warm enough for them.

On to the lists =>

   On 14049.5 kHz at 2200z:
K6PJV - Dale - CA - K3 - 1183
N0AR - Scott - MN - K2 - 4866
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457
NO8V - John - MI - K3 - 820
N0TA - John - CO - K3 - 994
N3SW - Scott - PA
K4JPN - Steve - GA - K2 - 1422
K0DTJ - Brian - CA - K3 - 4113
W8OV - Dave - CA - K3 - 3139
N7KRT - Jeff - TX - K2 - 5471
KB3FBR - Joe - PA - K2 - 6178
AE6IC - Fred - CA - K3 - 2241

   On 7045.5 kHz at z:
K0DTJ - Brian - CA - K3 - 4113
K6PJV - Dale - CA - K3 - 1183
NS7P - Phil - OR - K3 - 1826

Thank you for the fun nets. I enjoyed hearing from you all. It was
very nice to hear improvement in twenty meters. Forty meters was about
the same as last week since it would not get over the Rockies as it has
many times in the past. But with the days beginning to shorten I expect
it will get back to better propagation at net time soon. It is noticeably
moving southward at each sunset. The flowers have also changed to the
orange and purple hues of mid-summer. While I was out walking just now I
heard a mourning dove. His call was not what I had grown accustomed to
when I grew up in Wisconsin. Not enough beats on the end. I wonder how
much variation there is in bird calls over their normal range?
Until next week stay well,
   73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)

In commercial radiotelegraph in the past, they were generally presented
in the opposite order ... you ask the question "INT QRM" meaning, "Are
you bothered by interference?," or "INT QLB KPH 6" meaning "Have you
monitored KPH on 8 Mcs and if so can you report their signal strength?"
and the answer "QRM" meant "Yes, I am bothered by interference." If you
weren't bothered by interference you responded "N N K", or "NO K." "N"
and "NO" work for a great number of languages, as does "OK".

If you had monitored KPH on their 8 Mcs, you might report "QLB KPH 6 QSA
4" meaning "I have monitored KPH on their 8 Mcs frequency and I report
them as QSA 4."

In that service, "INT" [di di dah dit dah sent as one character] was the
interrogatory, and preceded the question you were about to ask. [INT
QRL] The Morse question mark is "di di dah dah di dit] which duplicates
the prosign "IMI" meaning either "please repeat last" or "I will repeat
last". Those with commercial radiotelegraph experience may remember this.

INT never made it into ham practice as [I think] we found that we could
easily distinguish a "?" from an "IMI" from context. Of course, we were
also not handling traffic for a price for a communications company who
had a rule book and a Chief Op standing behind you about to box you on
your ears if you screwed it up. :-)

Very true in commercial marine and aeronautical radiotelephone service.
Hams, being inventive and prone to thinking out of the ITU box, have
nounified and verbified [and in some cases adjectivified and
adverbified] International Q Signals. QRM is too many stations on the
same frequency, generally a noun, as is QRG ["HIS QRG?"]. QRQ can be
either ... a noun denoting high speed CW, or a verb [QRQ] meaning "speed
up."
>
> Oh ... 73 is correct. 73's isn't. 73's is equivalent to "Good lucks".

I'm not the expert, but I have always thought 73 meant "Best Regards."
Thus, "VY 73 ES GUD DX" meant "Very Best Regards and Good DX." 73's
would then mean, "Best Regardeses."

But, if you tell me "Best 73's" on phone, I will take it as a gesture of
good will toward me, and thank you for that.

Mike,

The Prolific cable always worked for me on Windows XP but when I
upgraded to Win 7 I could not find a driver that would not blue-screen
the system. The new FTDI cable works great with all software I've
tried, including N1MM.
