[Elecraft] K3 PTT Trouble

2011-08-31 Thread Dave Wright
Hello all.

Perhaps someone will have experienced a similar problem and can point me in the
right direction.

The rig is a new (less than 2 months old) factory-built K3-100 rig that has
already had its fair share of problems (IF cable missing upon shipping, power
component defect that blew part of the power system and rig had to be shipped
back to the factory). Now this has suddenly popped up. I'm starting to wonder
if I have a defective rig.

I have a Heli foot switch with both a RCA and a 1/4 plug. I have been running
with the RCA connector into the PTT IN on the back of the K3. Suddenly, this
evening it doesn't work.

If I switch to the front mic connector with the Heil adapter cable, I can use
either the RCA or 1/4 connectors with no issue, so I know the RCA connector is
good. The problem seems to lie with the PTT IN jack on the back of the rig.
Anyone ever have one of these go bad?

Any thoughts and/or guidance would be appreciated.

73,

Dave

[Elecraft] Colorado QSO Party

2011-08-31 Thread John Reilly
The Colorado QSO Party is this Saturday, Sept 3, from 1200z to Sept 4,
0400z. See http://www.ppraa.org/coqp/ for details and frequencies.

Several of us will be on the Baca / Prowers county line operating a K3
as W0DK. Another team member will operate mobile from some of the
surrounding counties. These counties in southeast Colorado are fairly
rare. We will be operating both CW and SSB.

Please give us a call!

[Elecraft] K2 AF Gain Pot

2011-08-31 Thread John Ferguson
The AF Gain pot on my K2 is getting loose.  I suspect it will last another year
or two, but since i use it daily, I thought it would be good to replace it with
a better part.  Everything else on it has held up well and exhibits not wear,
other than the usual scuffing. i did have to replace the headset jack a couple
of years ago but decided for that, that dedicating a headset to the k2 was
easier than replacing the jacks.

So the question is, has anyone identified a more durable replacement?

It's been a great radio.  I like the looks of the new KX3, but there's
something very sticky about a radio you've built yourself.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 AF Gain Pot

2011-08-31 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

If I recall, your K2 is an earlier one. The currently supplied AF Gain
controls from Elecraft have a metal sleeve around the shaft and are much
more durable than the first ones.
I do not know of a more durable replacement other than those currently
stocked by Elecraft.

If your K2 is below SN 3000, I suggest adding the Alternate AF Gain
Wiring Mod to your K2 at the same time you replace the AF Gain control.

Re: [Elecraft] XV144 TS-520

2011-08-31 Thread Al Gulseth
Martin,

They're not very common, but a MFJ-210 Digi-dial might be what you're
looking for. It takes the VFO output (5-5.5 MHZ) and mixes it with a crystal
to compensate for the IF, then feeds into a conventional frequency counter.

The following link has what looks like text from an ad for the product, and it
specifically mentions the TS-520:

snip Order MFJ-210 for any rig with 5 5.5 MHz VFO (TS 520, S, SE; TR 3, 4;
HW 100, 101: SB 101, 102, Tritons; etc) snip

http://www.marcradio.org/rm-1981-10/a-meq.html

(I actually have one in unopened plastic and original box that I came by in a
package deal sometime in the past, but unfortunately it would cost way more
than it's worth to ship it across the pond)

 Elecrafters,
i intend to use my XV144 Xverter with a Kenwood TS-520.
The 520's frequency readout is analog, so not *that* precise.
Where in the TS-520 can i connect a Counter to read
 the 10m frequency? Other solutions?
Connect the counter to the XV to directly read the 2m frequency?
 Any input welcome.

[Elecraft] KRC2 with K3, KPA500 and MH MKII keyer

2011-08-31 Thread Mike Fatchett W0MU
KRC2 built.

It appears there are a couple of ways to wire the KRC2 with the K3. I
have the KPA500 and am using the Aux bus so I think I should use the aux
bus. The KRC2 will be used to drive an ICE 419 Bandpass filter unit.

I would appear that all I need to do is connect pin 6 on the KRC2 to pin
2 on the 15 pin connector and pin1 to pin 5.

Why would one want to hook up using serial ports with or without logging?

The entire setup will consist of a Microham MKII keyer or MK2R+ , K3,
KPA500 and KRC2. It would appear that I would need another 15 pin
splitter to run the MKII, KPA500 and KRC2 all on the the Aux Bus. I
assume that the splitter that Electraft provided is 15 pins straight
through?

IN that situation I'd use a counter to read the transverter output frequency
so the accuracy of the XV144 local oscillator isn't an issue.

The Kenwood DG-5 has already been mentioned. That was the digital
display accessory that Kenwood made specifically for the TS-520.

You can get the manual, with schematic and block diagram, to see how
the DG-5 used **three** outputs from the TS-520 to accurately show the
frequency...those are the DET, VFO, and CARRIER RCA connections on the
back of the TS-520.

If you find a DG-5 for sale, make sure you get some sort of guarantee
that it works and is not intermittent. The DG-5 was one of the most
unreliable devices made in the ham market in the 1970s and early 1980s.
But it was very nice when it worked.

Mine quite working almost 30 years ago. Been dead ever since. Very
common condition.
