Re: [Elecraft] RTTY with the XG3
Hi Roger, Here are the pages from the XG3 manual (11-13) that describe the use of the CW/RTTY sender: RTTY Sender Starting with version 1.14, the XG3 contains a Morse code and RTTY sender with memory function. The Morse code sender can be adjusted for WPM (words per minute), and the memory can hold up to 60 characters. Meta-characters can be embedded in the memory string and can be used to change the mode to RTTY, introduce pauses, turn the carrier on or off, repeat the entire string and perform other functions. The XG3 will save the prior output state and restore it after sending the sequence. A convenient way to enter serial commands is to use the XG3 Utility’s Command Tester (far right tab). After upgrading to version 1.14, you may need to re-enter any programmed sweeps. For RTTY, the standard of 170 Hz FSK at 45.45 baud is implemented, with the space frequency 170 Hz below the mark frequency. The mark frequency is the current output frequency of the XG3. The complete set of Morse Memory meta-characters are listed below: Morse Memory Meta-characters { - turn on RTTY mode, characters following will be transmitted in RTTY } - turn on CW mode, characters following will be transmitted in CW ~nn - send RTTY diddles (LTRS) for nn seconds (00 to 99) (RTTY only) \n - send LF (RTTY only) \r - send CR (RTTY only) \b - send BELL (RTTY only) \ - sends the character following the ‘\’ without translation. i.e. \$ or \# [nn - changes wpm to nn (05 to 50) (CW only) ^n - set level to n (0 = 0 dBm, 1 = -33, 2 = -73, 3 = -107) :nn - turn carrier on for nn seconds (00 to 99) $nn - pauses for nn seconds (00 to 99) |nn - recall band/memory nn (0 to 11) # - repeat entire sequence _ - space Supported Morse Characters Letters: A-Z Numbers: 0-9 Punctuation: . / ? @ Special: * = SK, + = AR, - = BK, _ = word space Automatic power down is disabled during Morse memory transmission. Meta-characters only work with the Morse memory. All serial commands must be terminated with a semi-colon ( ; ). WM[,character string…..] programs the Morse/RTTY Memory Fills the Morse Memory with the string following the command. Up to 60 characters total may be entered. Entering WM without any arguments displays the current contents. SendWM,de_w1aw_*; XG3:nothing Send: WM; XG3:WM,de_w1aw_*; W[,character,string,…..] sends the character string or Morse Memory The character string will be sent out. If no character string is specified, the contents of the Morse memory will be sent. [Elecraft] Transverter + K3 power problem
Hi all, I discover a problem using a external transverter with the K3 - this machine is going to cost me nerves ! I use a external transverter for 144 MHz using XVTR out/in break out BNC. When I'm in ssb mode and push xmit "without connected any microphone" my transverter shows power up to his max. of 60w. When I switch K3 monitor on -> level 50 there is a noise like a motor from a driving car. So there must be Pout from K3. Also I can't regulate the power on the K3 for driving the transverter. Same is in DATA-A mode. In FM mode this effect is not there. I checked all I could in the config menu but did not any fault setting. Jim, If you are using DATA A submode, the K3 will receive and transmit whatever shift the software you are using is capable of. As far as I know, the FSK and AFSK data submodes have only 170 Hz shift. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/22/2011 3:53 PM, Jim McDonald wrote: > Can the K3 receive (or transmit) RTTY shifts other than 170 Hz? > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] MCU 4.42 Beta Firmware
Thankyou for the links regarding NR. I hope possibly in future firmware updates that a signal selection scale will provide more bleed-through at the -1 setting, allowing for a less distorted starting point with better/more audio level. In addition hopefully the comparison signal selection process algorithms can be improved to better discern noise against audio. After a year with the K3 and experimenting with settings I am happy with the K3 as I have learnt to deal with various signals on various bands. I quite often have local op's telling me they could not hear the station I was talking too. For me having both the 2.1 and 1.8 k 8 pole filters is a plus and I usually listen between 1.8 to 2.1 k width. I use AGC threshold at 8 and slope 0. RX Eq set to N1EU pink noise roll-off settings (red). Some time ago I listened to a USA 40m net on a noisy band. I went through every NR combination with 6-1 giving the relatively best result for NR settings. Then I turned off the NR and turned on the ATT (RF gain already back to 2 o'clock) and what a difference. The noise had become suppressed and transparent, and every weak signal was copied with good clarity compared with the best NR setting I could find, which still sounded like mush in comparison. So I learned using ATT was the way to go. The K3 obviously has plenty of sensitivity to spare. It just makes me wonder how Yaesu's DNR works etc, as it seems very effective without the same issues. Maybe they use a different method? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RTTY shifts other than 170 Hz?
More information on shifts other than 170 Hz -- Joe Subich responded to me privately (I am not certain why he did not copy the list), pointing out that the AFSK submode also can handle any shift sent by the software -- as long as the Dual PB filter is not in use. Obviously, the K3 decode and display in the VFO B area will not work well with anything other than a 170 Hz shift. Joe also mentioned the need for steps to center the tone(s) in the IF passband - I quote: "It will be necessary to adjust the DSP "width" and Mark to center the tones in the IF passband (e.g., it is often best to select MARK=1445 so FC is close to 1500 Hz particularly for wide shifts in LSB/AFSK A mode)." 73, Don W3FPR On 9/22/2011 4:15 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > Jim, > > If you are using DATA A submode, the K3 will receive and transmit > whatever shift the software you are using is capable of. > As far as I know, the FSK and AFSK data submodes have only 170 Hz shift. > 73, > Don W3FPR > > On 9/22/2011 3:53 PM, Jim McDonald wrote: >> Can the K3 receive (or transmit) RTTY shifts other than 170 Hz? >> >> > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 - temporary switch lockup
Just before today's practice session for CQWW RTTY, the front panel switches on my K3 s/n 993 stopped working. I first noticed that the xmit/tune button didn't work. Then I found none of the other buttons would work either. I turned the rig off, and back on again. The POWER switch worked, but none of the other buttons worked. I then updated all the firmware, using the newest K3 Utility. I was only one or two FW revisions behind. The buttons still wouldn't work. I tried to do a switch test, but the menu/config button didn't work either, so I couldn't get into config. I saved the configuration. I tried to do an EE INIT, but the shift/lo button wasn't working either, so the EE INIT failed. I kept floundering around, pushing buttons, and then everything started working again. This was one minute before the practice session, and the rig worked fine during practice. Even when the buttons weren't working, the rig transmitted and received fine. Any ideas what could have caused all this, or what corrective/preventative actions to take? [Elecraft] Subject: Re: K3 and Remoterig
Wayne, I ran into an application that may relate to remote operations of the K3. Not exactly sure what the definitiion of "remote" means as you are using it. I have a situation where I need to control the K3 VFO in Tx from another program (actually is a digital mode) and suspect that there would be a way using the serial I/F. The sw I am using displays 90-KHz of bandwidth from a LP-PAN connected to the K3 and decodes all JT-65 signals in the bw. The software enables one to click on a particular frequency to transmit. I'm pretty sure that the sw has not been set up to talk to a K3. Most are using a special SDR called the WSE. The K3 VFO is set on the mid-freq of the 90-KHz band for Rx (easily done manually), but to change freq for transmit some kind of remote connection is needed as the sw automatically controls Rx/Tx switching via RTS or DTR lines. This is in the DATA mode, of course. The sw is MAP65 by Joe Taylor, K1JT and becoming very popular for eme. This may require a collaboration between the K3 remote sw and MAP65. I am not a sw designer or even a programmer so excuse the naiveness of my question (getting my feet wet without boots). I assume that programs like HRD do not currently have the ability to control the K3. 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-QRT, 1296-?, 3400-? [Elecraft] P3 - Wandering Baseline
I thought I had this figured out and solved. That I have not solved it does not surprise me, I'm fairly old and this *has* occurred once or twice before. Every now and then, generally more "then" than "now," the baseline on my P3 sort of wanders upwards. Sometimes it's on the left, sometimes it is on the right, sometimes [not so often], it's the entire baseline. It goes up maybe 1/3 of the screen [I usually have the waterfall turned off, I can't see it, long story], and it moves around vertically, not fast, but not slow either [being a retired engineer, I like to be precise]. The band noise and signals seem to ignore this, they just appear on the elevated baseline as if they didn't know, which I suspect they don't. If, when this is happening, I place my hand on the top of the P3, the baseline returns to where it should be and stays there like a chastised 4 year old, with about the same attention span. I have grounded the P3 to my single point ground [a wide copper strap along the back of the shelf and "grounded" straight down to the ground], I've moved the rig power supply [FT-1030A] away, and I've shut the KPA500 [about 10 inches underneath] off with no change. I actually don't mind putting my hand on it to fix it, I've banged radios and moved stuff in magic ways for 50+ years to solve problems, but I'm just curious. My P3 is powered from the K3. Has anyone else seen this? I haven't yet tried "hand on side of P3," tonight if the baseline wanders. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2011 Cal QSO Party 1-2 Oct 2011 - www.cqp.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KRC2 and Win7
Is anyone running the KRC2 with Windows 7, 64 bit? I'm just trying to get this system off the ground and having little luck. I'm using a PCIe to serial card. The Downloader program will return the version number (1.5) from the KRC2, but that is all. The Utility will sometimes return the version number, but then immediately gives the "KRC2 not found" message. Using a USB to serial convertor returns an "Invalid Port" message. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
