Dave in case of further need may I ask you via e-mail (by using the address at qrz.com) off this reflector? Re: [Elecraft] P3: Can the Panadapter be used with a Ten Tec Orion 1?
Lu, if you have access to an SDR receiver that can record it's output on a PC, it might be easier that using a noise source. When comparing several microphones and headsets on my K3, I used a Perseus SDR to play back the results for A/B/C/D comparison in order to pick the best equaliser/mic combination. The saved files from the Perseus were labelled to match the microphone and can be played back very easily, in addition, recording a wide chunk of frequency means the bandwidth can easily be checked if that might be an issue. 73 Dave __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Pardon me, but I have read a lot of the traffic on this topic, and some very good ideas have been considered. Recorded audio into the mic jack or a sound source as in a 'pink' noise, or ''white' noise allows the radio to be adjusted. I have a K3, so I can use it with the P3 to analyze the audio of my other radio(s) while transmitting into a 'dummy' load. But, none of these account for the difference in mics. [Elecraft] KPA100 Initial Test Problem
Hello all: I am building a remote KPA100 in an EC-2 enclosure. The KAT100-2 has already been built and tested correctly. My K2 is S/N 5717 with firmware 2.04P. Problem: All the test point voltages are nominal (+/-10%) except U1 pin 27. The voltage listed is 5.8 … I got 3.99 volts. Everything else in the section of initial tests is flawless. U1 pin 20 = 5.04 U1 pin 28 = 5.56 U2 pin 10 = 13.65 U4 pin 1 = 13.65 U4 pin 11 = 5.04 All of the other values are 0 as noted in the checklist. On initial power up, the K2 power supply voltage was 13.8 and current 0.36. Any hints on where to look for the problem? Re: [Elecraft] P3: Can the Panadapter be used with a Ten Tec
Yes, that would work, but then I would also have to take the K3 with me as well. Trying to travel light. Several have made the suggestion to place back to back protection diodes on the P3 input, set the P3 to a convenient below 22mhz frequency, tune the rig being tested to that frequency and the P3, being a self contained receiver, will show the waveform. I think this is the direction I will go. -lu-w4lt- --- Message: 21 Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2011 17:52:43 -0700 From: Alan Bloom n...@sonic.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3: Can the Panadapter be used with a Ten Tec Orion 1? Re: [Elecraft] Safari Problem
Apparently there is a problem with Adobe Reader and Lion. I use Chrome as my main browser, but I've been using the SchubertIt PDF plug-in with Safari. It works great! Much better than Adobe. It should solve your problem. http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/ You could also remove the Adobe plug-in so that the PDF's will open in Safari's embedded PDF viewer. Navigate to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins. You should see the AdobePDFViewerPlugin there. If you don't have one already, create a directory called Disabled Plugins. Move the AdobePDFViewPlugin there and restart Safari. Safari should then use its embedded PDF viewer instead of Adobe. You can check Safari's Help-Installed Plug-ins menu to see that Adobe is no longer included in the list of loaded plugins.. But I would opt for the SchubertIt plugin. Re: [Elecraft] P3: Can the Panadapter be used with a Ten Tec
True, Bill. I have also found out that different vintage Heil ProSet DX4's have different output levels and frequency response. The older ones have hotter output than the newer ones. Also needed to be taken into account are male vs female voices (we have female ops as well). And different mic technique. Lots of variables! Im trying to minimize them as much as possible. I realize that different voices will give different results, but if you find a good normal from a compression and mic standpoint and stick with it across all the rigs, and keep people's fingers out of the settings when they are trying to help, you dont end up with mush and splatter. And the key in any contest is for them to UNDERSTAND the exchange, so the more articulate and clear we make the transmission, the easier it is for the other guy to copy us correctly and log us. We aint talkin' about broadcast quality hi-fi here, we're talking about being heard and, most importantly, being understood above the cacophony in a phone contest with lots of QRM and mis-tuned amp IMD flying about. Actually, last year we decided to assign headsets to particular radios due to the idiosyncracies of the rigs and the mics. That rule lasted most of last year's contest, lets see how long it lasts this year :) You can have a big signal, but if they cant understand it, you may as well run QRP. Just cuz the meters are swingin' WAAAY to the right dont mean they can understand what youre sayin' -lu- - Message: 31 Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2011 09:47:26 -0400 From: nr4c n...@widomaker.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3: Can the Panadapter be used with a Ten Tec Orion 1? Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Initial Test Problem
Gene, Check RP1 pin 7. If you do not find close to 8 volts there, you will need to track down the source of the problem in the 8R input to the KPA100. If you find the voltage at RP1 pin 7 is not anywhere near 8 volts, check the source - what is the voltage on the K2 Control Board Q2 collector - that is the source for 8R. If the two points have significantly different voltages, you will have to find the discontinuity in the wires, connectors and PC traces between those two points. If RP1 pin 7 is OK, but U1 pin 27 is lower than normal, that may be OK - pin 27 of U1 is simply drawing a bit more power than usual - as long as the 5R and 5T outputs from U1 at pins 13 and 14 work OK, you will not have a problem. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/25/2011 11:26 AM, Eugene Worth wrote: Hello all: I am building a remote KPA100 in an EC-2 enclosure. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Fldigi on a Mac
Giorgio, Yes, feel free to drop me a line if you need more help. I am current on qrz.com. One quick point of clarification to make here is that fldigi and MacLoggerDx cannot access the serial port at the same time. There is software available in windows that makes this possible, but I am not aware of any for the Mac. (If anyone knows of serial port sharing software for MacOS, PLEASE chime in!). Aside from this one caveat, fldigi and MacLoggerDX work FB side by side on the Mac. 73 Aloha, Dave On Oct 24, 2011, at 9:47 PM, ik1bxn wrote: Thanks a lot to all for support. [Elecraft] K3 tune button
I recently acquired a tube amplifier and find tuning with a fast string of dits works best. Of course I can use the built in keyer but I like the idea of the tune button putting out dits instead of steady carrier. Is this something anyone else would use? I use the tune button constantly for adjusting my 3 balanced tuners as well. Normally I have tune mode set to 5 watts. DIT MODE would be also have adjustable power levels. Yes I know there are external pulsers available. Just fishing to see if theres enough interest with solid state no tune amps becoming more routine. Re: [Elecraft] K3 tune button
Steve, You are correct that the FINAL tuning of an amplifier with adjustable L and C controls should be done at full power, but I see no need for those pulsers - do a preliminary adjustment with a low TUNE power, and then do a quick touch-up at the full power level - that only takes a couple seconds for the final tuning. We hams have been tuning amplifiers at full power for ages and ages, long before pulsers became available, and that is how we did it - get close with low drive to the amp and touch it up at full power it works every time, and no harm to the tubes (unless you dally at the full power touch-up). 73, Don W3FPR On 10/25/2011 6:59 PM, Steve Walter WA3A wrote: I recently acquired a tube amplifier and find tuning with a fast string of dits works best. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 alternating TX/RX display
Actually, I can see some merit in the OP's request. What if you are (heaven forbid) using the KPA500 with another brand radio? Or, what if you want to monitor power out on transmit but monitor the amplifiers temp on receive. (Or any other combination of available data from the amp.) [Elecraft] New product suggestion
About this time of night the cluster fills up with spots from 6's and 7's working into rare spots in Asia. Sometimes I can hear a few dits from the Vietnam or Cambodia station, but usually not. To remedy this situation, I propose a sure-fire winner to add to the Elecraft product line: what they did for the 500 watt amp, they need to do for the 5 band, 5-element Yagi. Squeeze it down so that I can mount it on my chimney and tuck it away where the neighbors can't see it, but make it perform as if were full-size and about 50 feet higher. The perfect completion to the K-line, the KYAG-5x5. 73, Tony KT0NY -- http://www.isb.edu/faculty/facultydir.aspx?ddlFaculty=352 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] OT Hypothetical KAT500 antenna connection question
Fred: Your option 'b' is not an option. As you acknowledge the twin lead is a tuning device. Remove the twin lead and you need a lot more antenna tuner. The twin lead is not a perfect tuner so it is advisable to cascade an adjustable antenna tuner as well. If you want tuned antennas the dimensions for dipoles are readily found. Be advised your 80 meter dipole will be longer than a G5RV. 73 Fred, AE6QL -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Fred Atchley Sent: Monday, October 24, 2011 10:45 AM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] OT Hypothetical KAT500 antenna connection question I have a question about connecting the KAT500 (outside version) to an 80 thru 10 meters wire antenna. As an example, I have a Mystery antenna which, like the G5RV uses a tuned length of twin-lead as part of the antenna design. Therefore I will have two possible places to couple the KAT500 to the old antenna: a. At the present input end of the twin-lead. b. At the antenna center point (do away with the twin-lead.) Another alternative would be to replace the old antenna with a new wire. I believe this alternative would require selecting a longest length of wire which avoids a quarter-wave length multiple on any band. Any ideas on what length that would be? Since getting the KPA500, I have added tuned antennas on 10, 15 and 40. On those three bands, I can use the amp w/o a tuner. I'm leaning toward a new wire to replace the Mystery antenna for 80 and 20 meters. Last week at 0500Z, I worked Cape Town, South Africa on 20 meters with 200 watts (KPA500 sometimes blinking red.) So, now is the time to prepare. I welcome your thoughts and I assure you that I have great respect for your input. 73, Fred, AE6IC, K-Line __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
