Agree regarding the KPA500.

But why not make the antenna a 1.8-50.0MHz log-periodic with a minimum gain
of 5 dB?

About this time of night the cluster fills up with spots from 6's and 7's
working into rare spots in Asia. Sometimes I can hear a few dits from the
Vietnam or Cambodia station, but usually not. To remedy this situation, I
propose a sure-fire winner to add to the Elecraft product line: what they
did for the 500 watt amp, they need to do for the 5 band, 5-element Yagi.

Squeeze it down so that I can mount it on my chimney and tuck it away where
the neighbors can't see it, but make it perform as if were full-size and
about 50 feet higher. The perfect completion to the K-line, the KYAG-5x5.

[Elecraft] K3 - Choice of filters in KRX3

2011-10-26 Thread GW0ETF
When I bought the 2nd receiver after it first came out I matched the main rx
with an 8-pole 250 Hz roofing filter. After several years now of SO2V
contesting and dx pile-ups I've never had the 2nd receiver wound down
anywhere near the point where this filter would be switched in. So I'm
wondering whether to liquidate this particular valuable little asset and
invest in something more useful...such as antenna hardware.

Before I do perhaps others could say how they think the 2nd rx should be
populated filter-wise, which presumably will vary with operating mode. I
don't tend to do the 'second op with separate headphones tuning the 2nd vfo'
scenario which is I assume where a full filter complement would be
useful.

Be interested in any opinions.73,

When using diversity receive, both receivers should use the same filter.
You enter diversity receive by pressing SUB for a looong time. Manual
says 2s, that's probably right, but it feels longer. The two receivers
have to be connected to different antennas. The details are in the manual.

But *why* isn't the sub-receiver antenna input grounded when the K3 is
transmitting? On most bands, if I try diversity, the relay protecting
the sub input starts clicking, and that means I should turn it off.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Fldigi on a Mac

2011-10-26 Thread Stephen Prior
It is worth pointing out that Rumlog and Fldigi happily coexist too. Rumlog
will use Fldigi's serial connection to the K3. One further thing is that I had
no luck with getting Fldigi to communicate with the K3 and had to use Flrig -
from the same author - to do the talking. I have made it all sound much more
complicated than it is! It all works well, data mode qsos logged in Fldigi
will automatically get entered into Rumlog.

[Elecraft] K3 KPA500 Spike in Output Power

2011-10-26 Thread Peter Quick
I have fairly new K3 KPA500. They both are running the latest
software. When on CW I typically call a station with my RX filter set
at 2.8kHz. If there is an increase in noise level, or other adjacent
signals I will switch receive BW progressively from 2.8kHz to 1.8 then
400Hz. When I then resume transmitting I notice that I will see what
appears to be a power spike on the wattmeter on the KPA500 from 500 to
700 watts for one or two dits, then drop back down to 500 watts. The
fault light does not flicker or come on when this happens. This never
happens when switching to 250Hz. It consistently happens when going from
2.8 to 1.8 and from 1.8 to 400. All filters are from Elecraft and are 8
pole.

Have others seen this and is it normal?
Is there a problem with this?
Is it an actual spike in power from the K3 resulting in a spike from the
amplifier?

I have fairly new K3 KPA500. They both are running the latest

at 2.8kHz. If there is an increase in noise level, or other adjacent

Is it an actual spike in power from the K3 resulting in a spike from the
 amplifier?

[Elecraft] K3s on Niue

2011-10-26 Thread Tony Estep
The ZK2V - ZK2X expedition to Niue is using a K3 driving a THP amp. For
higher bands, antenna is a Spiderbeam, as has been the gold standard on a
number of DXpeditions recently. Good signals, good ops, and an awesome
real-time logging system that puts your call on-line within seconds of the
QSO, even faster than the EL1 expedition earlier this year.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s on Niue

2011-10-26 Thread Jim Sheldon
Good op too! Grabbed them 1st call on 10 meter CW @ about 3 watts and just
after I worked him he said he was going to QSY to 28.444 SSB and when they
announced they were listening 5 to 10 up, I set up a 5 up split. Got 'em first
call there too with between 5 and 7 watts SSB.

Had to turn the amp on though to get 3XY1D (Guinea) on 20 a couple hours later.
Lots of flutter on them but I think they are running some K3's too. If not,
whatever they are using has pretty good ears.

Managed another grab last night, C50C in The Gambia. Caught them right as they
started on 40. Was running 100 watts and he was having a rough time getting my
call right so I punched up the KPA500 (lets hear it for instant on and no
tuneup amps) and that solved the problem. QRN was really heavy on both ends.
Found 'em on 15 CW a few minutes later and they were really loud there so no
problem grabbing them with about 20 watts.

This seems to be the season for all sorts of DXpeditions this year. I've
picked up 10 new countries in the last week alone.

Because they are in the Marquesa Islands. Google TX7M. You'll be sent to:
http://www.tx7m.com/

So far their on-line log reports 61,000 QSOs. The Marquesas is a new one for
many hams, and even after a week of 24/7 operations on several bands at
once, there are still modest pileups.

To update your CTY.DAT file so that you don't get incorrect country info, go

OK folks, I'm just curious, whether or not I should have a glass of wine
with dinner is a much bigger deal for me than this so I don't want to
start a big thread, but ...

I've noticed, just recently, that when I'm spinning the Big knob on the
K3 fast, or even not so fast, the apparent noise level on the K3
spectrum display seems to rise just a little [I don't use the W'fall, I
can't see most of it]. When I stop turning the knob, the trace settled
back to band noise. Happens all bands [that I've tried]. P3 works just
fine, K3 works just fine, KPA500 works just fine, I've got a few new
ones including the Survivor Island on several bands, I'm just curious.

I may have been the first to discover this several years ago, and Wayne
worked out a band-aid to fix it. I mostly heard it on 6M. It's a couple
of resistors and a couple of diodes that can be soldered from the bottom
of the main board. They're even generic parts! Just pull the bottom
panel to access it. There's a pdf on the website with nice photos and
instructions. Once you've done that, you change a setting in one of the
setup menus. Still have to do it with one of my K3s.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Tuning Noise

2011-10-26 Thread Grant Youngman
What you see in the display when not tuning is the time-averaged noise (or
signal), depending on how you have the averaging parameter set. When you're
tuning rapidly the P3 can't average, so the level appears to rise. It's rising
toward the actual peak noise level.

[Elecraft] noisy noise

2011-10-26 Thread riese-k3djc

Guys

I am being hammered by what I believe are switching power supplys from
the local hospital
although it could be from a neighbor as it doesnt show any directivity on
my rcv loop
are there any suggestions on a good noise canceler ?? I have a anc
product which isnt always
effective and wondered if the DX eng. unit may be better,, I believe it
will rotate / control the phase 360 #
it is a lot more expensive

anybody have any expierence with any of the noise cancelers ??

[Elecraft] Computerless RTTY/CW Keyboard for K3

2011-10-26 Thread Dave
With all the dxpedition activity on RTTY recently, I found I needed a
computerless RTTY keyboard. Memories would be a bonus. I came across the
design by I0CG http://www.i0cg.com/rtty.htm . It also had the advantage of
working on CW. Luckily I found all the parts I needed in my junk box.I wrote
up how I built it at http://g4fre.com/i0cg_rtty.htm

All that is needed now, for efficient computerless RTTY is to be able to be
able to display the decoded RTTY on the P3 screen!

[Elecraft] noisy noise

2011-10-26 Thread zendoc

hi Bob,

I've used both the MFJ 1026 and ANC-4 noise cancellers for intermittent noise
of various kinds, all coming from my neighbours. Both units had their pros
and cons but after using both, I can say that in practical use neither one out-
performs the other.

The ANC-4 is more compact and more sturdily constructed, so I ended up keeping
that.

Neither will deal with all kinds of noise, so these units are no panacea, but
when they do work well on a particular noise source, they work very well. I
have been able to reduce some S7 noise to virtually nothing. Subjective, I
know, but impressive when you witness the effect yourself.

My only other observation is that the noise antenna is critical. It needs to
be sited carefully in relation to the noise source and your station antenna
and be broadbanded. The short lengths of wire and whip antennas supplied with
these units are useless for anything other than local noise sources from
within in your shack. It's worth experimenting with various noise antennas
till you find one that works well. Best of luck.

Re: [Elecraft] noisy noise

2011-10-26 Thread Anndel
Aloha All,

One thing I'm learning from a good friend, KH6ZX is the use of a magnetic
loop receiving antenna such as a Wellbrook AL1530. I believe from reading
the K3 manual that with the KXV3 transverter (for the P3, sorry I may have
the model number wrong), it automatically switches between receive and
transmit and is great in cutting noise. I'm looking into purchasing one.
