Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Know bug?

2011-10-31 Thread Don Wilhelm
There are a lot of configuration menu settings that will change the
behavior of the K3 - that is one thing I love about this radio. I would
suggest a through study of the manual - starting with the chart of menu
settings. if you do not understand what a particular menu entry will
do, then study the relevant descriptive section of the manual until you
understand what is going to happen if a particular menu setting is on or
off (or something in between). You can experiment a bit, but do it with
a bit of understanding - in other words, study the relevant descriptive
section of the manual.

Once you know what the menu settings will do for you, your operating
experience with the K3 (or any other radio) will be enhanced tenfold -
because you will then know how to customize it to your personal preferences.

Study the manual - YES - but I suggest starting with the menu entries
(after you have gotten through the initial setup items), and your
knowledge of the radio will be greatly enhanced.

Gene,

You may have discovered the "key" - I suspect you have CONFIG: VFO OFS
set to "Yes" - that allows the RIT/XIT knob to tune in coarse increments
when RIT and XIT are off.

It has nothing to do with ghosts and goblins, just your menu settings.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 #2213

2011-10-31 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

The Lithium cells will provide good life and good voltage over that
lifetime.
Rechargable NiMh cells are nice because they can be recharged, but the
voltage from them is only 1.2 volts per cell, and they will not perform
very long before the KX1 proclaims "low voltage".
If you do use the NiMh cells, set the BAT menu parameter to 6.5 volts -
see page 62 of the manual for the recommended BAT menu settings for
various batteries.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Know bug?

2011-10-31 Thread Gene Langendorff

I have just discovered something else. With RIT/XIT turned off, turning the
RIT/XIT knob changes the frequency of the K3 and the displays on both K3 and
P3. The rate is 0.1 kHz as if in "COARSE" tuning mode. I see no mention of
this "feature" in the K3 manual.

I thought having the P3 connected to the K3 might cause some interaction so
disconnected it -- same behavior on the K3.

Maybe it has something to do with the date today. The goblins are doing it
to us.

2011-10-31 Thread Geoffrey Downs
Same 'feature' here. Also If I turn the RIT off the P3 display changes to
show the frequency that the K3 showed when the RIT was on and not the
frequency that the K3 reverts to when the RIT is turned off. Pressing CLR on
the K3 corrects the P3 display. Turning the P3 off and on again doesn't
correct its display but turning the K3 off and on again does. Does this
suggest that it's a K3 f/w issue?

Yes - in tracking mode.  In fixed mode the frequencies are the same.  And if

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Know bug?

OK, I think I may see the reason for conflicting results.

If, for example, I set my main VFO to 24.901 the P3 will also read 24.901.
Then if I turn on the XIT and turn it 1 khz to 24.902 the B cursor will be on
the 1 khz line above the center and the P3 will read 24.902. All good so far.

If I then turn off the XIT the transmit cursor will turn off and the XIT light
goes out but the display still says 24.902 until I hit the CLR button.

Maybe this doesn't explain the OP's question but it could lead to someone being
confused.

Not here!

With the P3 set to 10 khz span and the main cursor on 4 when I tune either the
RIT or XIT 1 khz the cursor is on 3 or 5 exactly.

[Elecraft] P3 anomoly

2011-10-31 Thread Joe K2UF
OK I think I am sending this to the list now.

My K3 VFO reads 7.000.000 P3 freq is 7.000.00 If I click on RIT and change
K3 VFO reading (via RIT) to 7.000.100 the P3 freq reading is now 7.000.20

I think this is the same results that David is reporting.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Center Freq save per band

2011-10-31 Thread n1al
The P3 does remember center frequency per band. However, if you tune the
K3 VFO A to a frequency outside the old P3 display range, then the P3
center frequency is changed according to the rules specified by the
"FixMode" menu setting. If you want the center frequency never to change
no matter what frequency the K3 is set to, then set MENU:FixMode to
"Static".

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Know bug?

2011-10-31 Thread Robert Dorchuck W6VY
I did not notice it before but I get the same thing - P3 is twice the deviation
in frequency as the K3.

Bob  W6VY

I am getting a 'feature' with my P3 when using RIT. I find that the RIT
frequency deviation displayed on the P3 is twice that of the RIT
deviation displayed on the K3. As far as I am aware I have the latest
firmware installed on both my K3 and my P3. Is this a know bug or do I
have a fault in my K3/P3 installation?

Sorry if I have missed it if it has been discussed on here before.

[Elecraft] P3 Center Freq save per band

2011-10-31 Thread Gill W4RYW
I am not sure how to set the P3 center frequency in the fixed mode so that it
stays put between band changes. I use the M keys + number to select bands. I
can save all the band settings using V>M key. If I have a span of 20 Khz on
the P3, set the center to say 14.30 Mhz, it will not stay saved. Switch band
to 3965 Khz and back and it will go to 14.35 Mhz - sometimes but not
always.

Does the P3 "remember" settings along with K3??

That's correct. We don't need REF CAL to be exactly 49,380,000 Hz
because we take the actual frequency of the reference into account in
firmware when setting up the synthesizer. The 2nd LO is compensated at
the same time, at 1/6th the rate (because of the /6 relationship
between that and the 1st LO).

If there's a K3EXREF installed, its microcontroller measures the
frequency of the 49 MHz reference down to 1 Hz using the 10 MHz
external reference as a timebase. This data is sent to the K3's main
MCU, which then uses it to "capture" the normal REF CAL value.

One advantage of this method (frequency-locked loop) is that no matter
how noisy the external reference is--possibly due to being distributed
around the shack--it can't have any effect on the radio's RX or TX
noise floor. It is used only as a counting gate.

Hi Olli,

What an opening eh?! It was so nice to work so many folks on the band, possibly
more than the last five added together hihi

Thanks for the suggestions, I don't do a lot of SSB, but figured there had to
be a way to make it "behave". I'll try all out and should be a little less
clumsy the next go 'round.

Thanks for the QSO and look forward to working you again soon. Hope to put in

Hi Julius,

first thanks for calling me on 10 m on Saturday, our QSO and the points were

much appreciated. ;-))

Concerning your question: If you configure "Radio PTT via command" in the

COM port settings aborting with the ESC key should work.

Besides this you can stop the DVK output on the transceiver itself by either

pressing PTT (microphone or foot-switch) or by pressing the REC button (just

a tap).

Have fun! 73, Olli - DH8BQA

[Elecraft] P3 - Know bug?

2011-10-31 Thread David Pratt
I am getting a 'feature' with my P3 when using RIT. I find that the RIT
frequency deviation displayed on the P3 is twice that of the RIT
deviation displayed on the K3. As far as I am aware I have the latest
firmware installed on both my K3 and my P3. Is this a know bug or do I
have a fault in my K3/P3 installation?

Sorry if I have missed it if it has been discussed on here before.

Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500 bias box problem

2011-10-31 Thread k . igor

The black box besides the battery holder and connectors has just one resistor.
If I remember correctly, you should be able to open the box and check. I had to
open mine because of failed solder connection. The wire used for "pig tail"
connector is pretty weak, it brakes easily. Check the wire and the battery
holder connections.

Hello,

it´s possible that the small black bias box of the Yamaha CM500 was damaged
if I use bias in the K3?

I was using DXDoubler for SO2R last weekend. CM500 connected to DXDoubler so
I needed to use the black bias box.

Since I couldn´t record M1-M4 messages in the K3 from the CM500 connected to
the DXDoubler, I connected directly CM500 (without black bias box) in the
back of the K3 and turn ON bias and record the messages.

Then I connected CM500 with bias box on the DXDoubler, but I forgot to turn
OFF bias in the K3 menu.

And I noticed that it stop working. I tested again the CM500 on the K3 and
work properly, so the problem is in the small bias box.

No signs of damage, but I cannot open it to see inside.

Any idea how to repair it or to buy another one?

the newer versions of N1MM do not "work" with the ESC key.

remap one of the unused F keys (say F12), like this

F12 ESC, {CAT1ASC RX;}

this forces the K3 into receive.  I used it over the weekend..works
great (until I lost power at 2220z Saturday...still no power...I'm

[Elecraft] XG3 question

2011-10-31 Thread Edward R. Cole
Jim,

Kurt is correct (I will expand on his suggestion).

First you should find the center frequency of your radio (72.9
MHz). ON the main window of the XG3 Utility Press window 2 and then
Press "edit". Enter the center freq. in the window labeled
2.Press "Apply" and then "OK". The freq that you found that
quieted the radio will be shown as current freq. at the window at the
top. The XG3 outputs a carrier which will quiet an FM radio when the
signal is strong enough. Set output level to -73 dBm should work or
use -33 dBm. I found I could radiate enough -33 dBm signal with a
rubber duckie antenna connected to the XG3 place near my 2m FM radio
for it to pick up the signal.

Once you know that enter a frequency offset from that until the radio
is no longer quiet. Use these two frequencies in the scan window
(PRESS the edit sweeps button). Enter the first freq in the "Start
Freq" window and the second freq in the "Stop Freq" window. Enter
.005 for Step Freq then Enter 100 (ms) in the Step Time
window. Check "Repeat" and "OK".

ON the main window of the XG3 Utility Press PF1 or PF2 depending on
which you set up and the XG3 will begin to rapidly step in freq and
you should hear it go from a fully quiet to a noisy signal to full
noise and you will hear a "pop-pop-pop" as the XG3 scans.

Jim,

To add to what Mike said in the reflector, and, as I understand it,
you can make the XG3 scan between two set frequencies. I suspect that,
if you set those frequencies fairly narrow and within the band pass of
the receiver, you should get some buzz (I suspect some sort of
saw-tooth). Of course, I don't know how fast it would scan, but I would
think that you should be able to detect it. Hope that helps until
someone with hands-on experience can reply...

Re: [Elecraft] CQ WW SSB

2011-10-31 Thread Mitch Wolfson DJØQN
Hi Johnny,

I have had a lot of problems over the years trying to order things from
U.S. based stores using a foreign credit card. Most internet shops there
seem to think we are all some kind of criminal if we live outside of the
United States ;-)

One exception I have found is B&H. They have no problem with foreign
cards, even billing a foreign address, but shipping to a U.S. address.

Their link for the CM500 is at:

Re: [Elecraft] Silly question about DVK3

2011-10-31 Thread Oliver Dröse
Hi Julius,

first thanks for calling me on 10 m on Saturday, our QSO and the points were
much appreciated.

I use N1MM and ESC has been effective with recordings on the computer, but

Can this be done, and if so, how?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 band stacking suggestion

2011-10-31 Thread John Oppenheimer
and the 10 Quick Memories enable band
> to band hopping with ease. The Quick Memories will go back to the last
> used frequency on a band

Looking at the Config option "MEM 0-9." Adding band stacking requires
having multiple memories for each band. The additions could be:

Add a config option to enable band stacking

in "MEM 0-9" after this:
>From then on, tapping M>V , then #1 , will take you to your last-used
frequency on 160 m, just as if you had used the BAND switch.
Add this:
If "Band Stacking" is enabled, tapping M>V , then #1 again. will take
you to your last-used frequency on 160 m in the next band stack memory.

The next level of utility would be to add a configuration parameter
which remaps a user selectable button to rotate through the
bands stacking registers on the present band. Possible suggestions are:
XIT, REV(hold), MODE. This addition will add an easy single button push
to rotate through the stacking registers.

Having the above config remap button allows one to use band stacking
without enabling "MEM 0-9" The process would be to use BAND to switch to
a band, then use band stack toggle button to rotate through the stacking
memories.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 band stacking suggestion

2011-10-31 Thread Don Wilhelm
David,

The first paragraph on page 16 of the manual has the information. The
fact that M>V or V>M has to be tapped first differentiates this VFO
memory use from the other functions (CW memories or DVR messages, or
programmable function buttons).

You cannot assign a label to these 4 memory buttons, so ignore that part
of the "how to set/retrieve the memories" for this use of the M1-4 buttons.

All in all, there are 144 memories available on the K3. The normal 100
memories plus 4 for each of the11 bands. I guess (but don't know) if
the transverter bands are used the total number of memories expand by 4
for each transverter band. So if the K3 is loaded with all 9
transverter bands, the total number of memories comes to 180, each
containing both A and B VFO frequencies, modes, filter settings, etc.
Use of the A/B button in conjunction with these memories adds a lot of
utility for hopping around a band, and the 10 Quick Memories enable band
to band hopping with ease. The Quick Memories will go back to the last
used frequency on a band, but the M1-4 memories will restore to whatever
was last stored in them.

2011-10-31 Thread Barry
Good points, Don. And, Dick, thanks, for the off-list reply.

I just redid them as 160, 80, 40 for 1-3; 20, 15, 10 for 4-6; 30, 17, 12 for
7-9; and 0 for 6m. Even though I no longer operate 80 and 160 due to
antenna restrictions, I think this will be much easier to remember, as I
still think of the "WARC bands" as non-primary bands.

What NOR/REV button are you talking about, Stewart?

What some other radios call NOR/REV is called ALT on the K3 - it's a
hold of the left end of the MODE button. I don't think that's what you mean.

There is a button labelled REV on the K3, but it has nothing to do with
NOR/REV modes. It's used to listen on your transmit frequency while in
Split mode. There is no tap vs. hold with this button - it temporarily
reverses VFOs A and B whenever it is in the depressed position. Changing
this so that a hold activated a Split+2 macro function would destroy its
primary function.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 band stacking suggestion

2011-10-31 Thread Don Wilhelm
Barry,

I believe you just have to develop some kind of "logical" system so you
remember - it only has to make sense to you.

I have mine set so 80, 40, and 30 m are on the top 3 buttons - 1, 2, and 3.
The next row is for 20, 15, and 10.
Followed by 17, 12, and 6 m on 7, 8, and 9
The "0" button is 160,

I do not have 60 meters assigned to one of the buttons. However, I can
get to 60 meters easily - I have normal memories 61 through 65 set up
for 60 meter channel hopping, and since those are likely the last memory
locations I have used, that is what comes up right after I tap M>V -
tapping M>V again puts me on 60 meters with channel hopping enabled.

That makes "sense" to me - you can use my system or develop what makes
sense to you.

Hi Stewart,

First, you must be configured for SO2V (single-radio, two-vfo), then in the
callsign field of the Entry window type a forward slash, "/" + the
frequency, ie. /28450 and it will put VFO B on that frequency.

I have stored a freqency and mode (CW, RTTY, and SSB) in M1-M3 on each band.
it's very convenient to quickly move around without pressing lots of
buttons.

I also have sored each band in the quick memories, 1-9. The only problem I
have with those is recalling which one is which. Any tips on that?

Hi Ted,
Many thanks for the info. I thought that I knew N1MM quite well, but
I had missed that feature. When my head recovers from the contest I will
try it.

The other thing I was looking for was the ability to directly enter a frequency
into VFO B, however it looks like the only way to do it is by entering in VFO A
and swapping (unless someone knows different :-))

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SPLIT+2

2011-10-31 Thread Ted Bryant
You don't need a macro in N1MM, Stewart. The feature is already there.

In N1MM, type ALT+F7 and it will open a window where you enter the kHz
offset from the low end band edge. For example on 40m if a DX station says
he's listening on 7234, type ALT+F7 then type 234 in the window. Hit ENTER
and the K3's VFO B is put on 7234 and the K3 is put in the SPLIT mode.
Hitting Alt+F7 again and hitting Enter with the window empty clears the
split and puts everything back on VFO A.

Simple and efficient. No diddling with the K3's buttons. And it works for
any split, 2kHz or 200kHz, doesn't matter, just type it in.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SPLIT+2

2011-10-31 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
If I remember correctly, this can be made to do B>A - I guess you could ask for
an option to switch B>A to go to A>B in place of SPLIT and put SPLIT as hold REV

to me it's just a case of learning to tap or hold correctly!

Having said that, the one thing I do find annoying is VOX, since I use it so
much, I would have preferred it to be on it's own button, and I find I often
change band instead of vox.
