Yes the phones are plugged into the 'phones' jack directly under the rs232
jack. Spkr+ph = no spkrs = 1

SPKRS
STEREO or MONO; 4 to 8 Ω
Plugging in external speaker(s) cuts off the internal
speaker. A stereo plug is recommended; tip is left
speaker, ring is right. If you only have a mono plug,
set CONFIG:SPKRS to 1 to disable right-channel
audio. (Also see important note below.)
PHONES
STEREO or MONO; 16 Ω min. recommended
The front and rear-panel headphone jacks are both
isolated with series resistors. This allows you to use
mono phones on one jack and stereo on the other, if
required. You'll need stereo phones for AFX (audio
effects) and stereo dual receive (with sub receiver).
You can plug in headphones and speaker(s) at
the same time, and hear audio in both, if you set
CONFIG:SPKR+PH to YES. However, if you set
CONFIG:SPKRS to 1, setting SPKR+PH to YES
will force mono headphone as well as speaker
output. You can set SPKRS to 2 if you use a stereo
plug at the external speaker jack, or if no external
speaker is plugged in.

[Elecraft] Fix for K3 and Signalink USB

2011-11-03 Thread Doug Shields
Per request,

The fix to my problem was making SURE that the K3 was in DATA A mode and
setting the line in level to the proper level (not zero). This is the first
time I have used the K3 in data modes. I think I ned to read the manual
more carefully.

BTW, I know it works. I just had a PSK31 QSO with EA8FJ in the Canary
Islands. Thanks to everyone for your help.

[Elecraft] Clamp-on RF current meters - a question for Ian and others..

2011-11-03 Thread VK7JB
Hi All,

I've been reading the discussions about RF and common mode current and using
a clamp-on RF current meter to sniff out common mode current in the shack.
I've checked the calibration of my MFJ 854 and am surprised that it's
calibrated quite well: I measure 1A of current measured running 50W into a
50ohm dummy load.

So, here's my question: how much common mode current is considered
"acceptable"? This meter measures down to a few milliamps. Is it an
impossible/futile goal to try to eliminate any stray CMC completely? When
should you call it quits and accept what you find?

Just curious, because the only CMC I can measure in my shack is about 10mA
measured at the coax connector on the back of one of my rigs while tuning up
with 10W output.

Interesting discussion, because I'd never thought of quantifying CMC before.

John

Doug, try it without the Signalink. Just unplug it, and plug the K3
line-out into the mic on your computer. This eliminates the jumpers and
settings as a possible source of error.

Next, try to transmit some RTTY or other digital mode. You should hear the
audio signal coming out of the computer speakers, and the K3 will go to
transmit if you are using CAT to control it.

Now plug the speaker-out on the computer into the K3 Line-in, set the power
out to 0 or hook up a dummy load, and try to transmit. By adjusting the
computer speaker out slider you can set the audio drive to the K3 as
desired. Now you're on the air. Set audio so that you get 4 full bars of
ALC and one flickering.

Good luck,
Tony KT0NY

[Elecraft] Help with K3 and Signalink USB

2011-11-03 Thread Doug Shields
Hello everyone,

I am sure there is a simple and thoroughly obvious answer to this but I
haven't found it. I have a K3 connected to a Signalink USB interface. I am
using the specific K3 cable that plugs in to the speaker and mic jacks on
the K3. I believe I have the internal jumpers on the Signalink set
properly. I have adjusted the sound card levels as recommended.

I can receive everything and decode signals just fine using Ham Radio
Deluxe. I just can't transmit any digital modes. I have tried many
combinations of settings with no luck. The K3 goes into transmit but I get
no indication of RF output. It works fine on CW and SSB.

What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Beta 4.42 and LP Bridge

2011-11-03 Thread Don Wilhelm
For what it is worth, Wayne said that beta helped the problem with HRD
turning off the K3 AGC.
My understanding is that this is not a problem with HRD when LP-Bridge
is in the picture too - but then I am going only by the few reports that
I have seen in passing.
As far as I know, the AGC off problem only occurs with HRD connected
directly to the K3 and not through LP-Bridge.

You might want to also post your problem to the LP-Pan Yahoo group -
that is where most of the questions related to LP-Bridge are aired.

Well, that wasn't it. Backing off to version 4.39 did not help. Strange, as
that was the only change to the K3 setup. I did also updated the KPA500 from
1.09 to 1.11, but it is not even on during this test. I cannot figure out
why LP Bridge would all of a sudden stop working. I can check the cables,
but I would be surprised if the cable failed. cause.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Center Freq save per band

2011-11-03 Thread Gill W4RYW
Alan,

Thanks for the reply! The static setting will not do what I was interested
in. It sets the display for a fixed span and will not display the sigs
beyond that setting, even if you tune outside the span.

I set my K3 memories for 7.030, 14.030, 21,030, etc. When I select the band,
the K3 tunes to that freq but the P3 may center on 14.035 or 14.025 instead
of 14.030. I like to tune down the band and see the next 20Khz display which
would be 14.000 to 14.020 if the P3 went to 14.030 initially for the center
freq. When it goes to 14.035, the next screen does not go to the band edge,
it goes to 14.005- Kinda a nuisance for quickly seeing DX on 14.000 to
14.020 quickly.

I would think that the P3 would always go back to same center freq when K3
went there but it seems to go +/- 5Khz either way in a somewhat random
manner. I am on ver 1.09 FW

Thanks anyway

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and HRD turning AGC off

2011-11-03 Thread ik1bxn
Hi you all !
I these days due to the AGC boring problem we are suffering, due to the HRD
recent history that says it's not clear when we'll have a new HRD "bugs
free" release and as I own a Mac I'm testing Cocoamodem/MacLoggerDx and I
may say the AGC problem disappeared.
So I would thank you a lot Wayne and whole Elecraft for efforts to fix this
problem but it does not come from k3 itself but it belongs to the HRD
software (I think) as Joe Subich (if I'm not wrong) explained us in a
previous post.
Anyway, as I'll keep on working with HRD until I'll be not 100% skilled with
Mac app, Wayne I'd like to have this new firmware release for my
k3.possibly.
Thanks a lot for all, best 73

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 I/Q SDR questions

2011-11-03 Thread Greg
Richard,

Hard to answer these as the KX3 has not yet been available for sale. I
don't expect Elecraft will be doing any software for this as there are
plenty of free options already available. I use NaP3 which is another
derivitive of PowerSDR but with a much better display resolution.
PowerSDRIF is another good optionthis of course need something like
LP-Pan for the IQ signals and a good soundcard.

HDSDR, freeware written by I2PHD and now maintained by a German group
(www.hdsdr.de
). But it should work with any package that supports receive I/Q
signals.

> --Has, or is, anyone in the process of modifying SDR software to

Not yet. But note that the KX3 supports the same rich remote-control
command set as the K3, which means it will work with HRD and other
third-party applications.

> --Will Elecraft be offering any software?

We'll have KX3 Utility which is used for firmware loading, general
configuration, and command testing. We might offer other applications
in the future.

> --What price range and type (USB vs. internal) was the soundcard used?

EMU 0202, $100 typical (used), USB external.

Richard, if I understand correctly how the KX3's I-Q output is going to
work, then you can use it directly with SPDR/IF, no modificaton necessary.
And if the KX3 is controllable via CAT commands, you can link SPDR/IF
directly to it using LP-Bridge. This would provide a panadapter setup
identical to what you'd get with a K3 and LP-Pan, which I can attest is a
truly wonderful arrangement.

My questions are:

Re: [Elecraft] K2 with the W2 Wattmeter kit

2011-11-03 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ray,

The W2 is *not* transceiver specific, it will work with any transceiver,
Elecraft or other.

It will also work fine with your K2.

Where you place it depends on where you wish to read the SWR. If you
are interested in seeing the SWR at the input to the KAT100, then place
it between the KPA100 and the KAT100 - but really, I can not understand
why you would want to do that, the KAT100 LEDs will tell you the same SWR.
If your interest is in the SWR at the end of the transmit feedline, then
you place it after the KAT100. That will show you the SWR looking into
your feedline, and at the same time, the KAT100 LEDs will telll you the
SWR that the KPA100 is seeing.

Good choice.

Works with any transceiver. The RS232 interface is for f/w updates
and data displays via an attached computer.

> If so, do I position it before or after the tuner?

Depends on whether you are using a rig's internal tuner or something
external. In my station the W2 is installed between the KPA500
output and an external tuner that I use with an "all-band" doublet.
The K3's KAT3 is bypassed in this arrangement.

The latest field-test edition of K3 firmware includes better
protection from the communications problem that causes HRD to turn off
AGC periodically. I'll be happy to send it to anyone who is

[Elecraft] K2 with the W2 Wattmeter kit

2011-11-03 Thread Ray Spreadbury
Hi Guys

My K2 has the KPA100W & KAT100 tuner and I thinking of getting the Elecraft
W2 wattmeter kit.

I believe the W2 is really designed to interface with the K3 but will it
also work OK with my K2?

If so, do I position it before or after the tuner?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and HRD turning AGC off

2011-11-03 Thread Courtney Krehbiel KD6X
I also have been having problems where the AGC suddenly shuts off while using
HRD V.5 with the K3/P3 combination. It's not caused by RF because often
this happens when I'm not even in the shack. I did find what seems to be a
solution for me, so I thought I'd post back and hopefully help others
similarly afflicted. My ah-ha moment came when I looked at the P3 manual
and realized that the RS232 path to the K3 went through the P3. (Figure on
p.13 of the P3 manual.) The communication between the P3 and K3 is always
fixed at 38400 baud. However, the communication between the computer and P3
can be changed. My HRD to P3 link was originally set at the default of
38400 baud. I used the RS232 menu selection on the P3 to set the speed to
9600 baud and made the same corresponding change to the connection
parameters in HRD on the PC. I haven't had any problems with the AGC
dropping since then, and I haven't noticed any significant differnce in the
functionality of HRD's ability to control/read the K3.
