Re: [Elecraft] My new KPA500
Joe (K2UF) is lucky with: UPS says my new KPA500 is now in Illinois and due to be delivered on Monday I opted for the lower cost USPS delivery. The handling of USPS deliveries in the UK is by Parcel Force, often referred to as Parcel Farce. They are living up to their name, my KPA500 has been sitting in UK customs for a week with no sign of movement and Parcel Farce claim there is nothing they can do to speed things up and it's nothing to do with them (customs say it is, according to their web site)! UPS clear UK customs in a matter of minutes and can have an Elecraft parcel to a UK address in 2 ~ 3 days. [Elecraft] KPA500 Buzz SOLVED
My KPA500 #274 worked fine with the yellow wire installed, but the voltage was a bit low (56-year old house) and output on 6M was also a tad low. I wired it for 220v. Since I use it for meteor scatter on 6m, I really wanted full output. But when I switched to the red wire, I got a terrible buzz. I don't mean a slight buzz, I mean a buzz on the order of an arc welder running at full tilt. A buzz that was louder than when the pole pig across the street caught fire. A buzz far too loud to be tolerated in a nice, quiet, Elecraft-equipped shack. I tried repositioning the transformer a number of times to no avail. I finally contacted Gary at Elecraft support, and working with him got the problem solved. Here's what I did: 1) Replaced the transformer hold-down bolt that was threaded only at the top with a bolt that was threaded all the way down. I installed this according to the new procedure in the KPA500 assembly manual (this is now shipped with all KPA500s). 2) I zip-tied together a number of the wires so that they were not contacting the transformer or the top of the case any more than was necessary. 3) I used a torque wrench to install the transformer to the correct spec in the manual. I'm not sure what fixed it, but the buzz is now down to a very slight, almost unnoticeable level. I have silent QRO on CW. Luxury. I offer this for anyone with an early KPA500 with a loud buzzing problem. When this thread was active there seemed to be some confusion about what was a normal buzzing level. Wayne stated that some buzz was normal, but I am sure that others experienced this extremely loud buzz that is not normal. Well, we have a slight conflict Houston! I found the ARRL Operating Manual - 9th Edition, and it has the same list as my 1977 Handbook, So if we want to invite only the named station to transmit, we should send a left-hand parenthesis symbol - Yes, the same operating manual lists that too! [Elecraft] K3 TX Inhibit success
Further to my mail yesterday, I am now able to confirm that my system is running with TX INHibit in use. Primary control between RX and TX is achieved with a footswitch controlling my sequencer. That in turn controls TX INHibit. So, unless I hit the footswitch, the K3 will not produce any power from PTT, VOX, XMIT, TUNE or internal voice keyer. Re: [Elecraft] Prosign IM to end K3 RTTY idle not working: Solved
Hmmm ... I had punctuation on my 2nd Telegraph exam in 1956 and got credit for the code when I sat for the Extra that afternoon at the Los Angeles FCC office. I didn't know the Extra code did not include punctuation. All the mills at the coastal marine station I worked at had a slashed zero, and a 1 key [not present on regular typewriters, you used a lower-case L]. They also had a couple of prosigns on them, I remember BT and AR. We had five mills, four of which were open-frame Underwoods. The prosigns had no bar. I can't remember the make of the fifth one, never really used it, but the prosigns on it had a bar. I have a 1990 ARRL Handbook, and on pg 38-2, Table 2 lists four prosigns and a couple of other signals. AR, KN, AS, and SK all have a bar. K, R, and CL do not, not that this means anything. The operating description for AR is interesting: Used after a call to a specific station before the contact has been established. I wonder where they got that? 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2012 Cal QSO Party 6-7 Oct 2012 - www.cqp.org On 12/3/2011 8:05 AM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: I believe -.--. has always been a left-hand parenthesis. [Elecraft] K3 TX Inhibit success
Appears John G4ZTR has solved the control issue with K3 Inhibit. I am using Inhibit on 2m and higher with my K3 and thought I would share how I did it using a sequencer. BTW the K3 will not transmit RF unless the Inhibit line is keyed by my sequencer even if I use the XMIT button in TUNE (this is as it should be so accidental RF is not transmitted). When my sequencer is powered off the K3 cannot be keyed on 2m, but will function on other bands. I accomplished this by using the BAND0 control line to enable Inhibit only on 2m (which uses TRN1 for my station). TRN1 outputs +5v on BAND0 which I use for driving a relay to enable INHIBIT. [Elecraft] Odd TX Behavior
First, thanks for all the logging suggestions. I have not yet decided which route I will take, but at least I have some suggestions. As to the subject matter, I have an odd transmit behavior. I like operating JT65 using JT65-HF and letting HRD key the radio. Sometimes, not always but enough times to be frustrating, when finishing with a transmit cycle the radio seems to hang in transmit. No audio is going out and there is no output power, but the radio is not receiving. I am using the SignaLink USB but prior to that, the EMU-0204 did the same thing, so I am fairly certain it is not a sound card issue. This problem does not seem to occur when transmitting PSK31 or Olivia using FLDigi. I'm thinking it's either a JT65-HF or HRD issue, but I cannot find anything regarding such a problem in either Elecraft list. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, Wonderful early winter weather all week has allowed me to stay outside much of each day. All this sun is unusual so it is very special. But as I work I look down into the valleys and find they are filled with dense fog. That may explain why so few people drove by over the week. After cutting, splitting, hauling, and stacking wood for so long it feels natural to keep doing it. As long as there is room I don't mind ending the heating season with wood to spare. Besides it is good exercise in the fresh, frosty air. Propagation was just as good with twenty meters waking up an hour or so after sunrise. I did not get a chance to listen on ten meters this week due to the fine weather keeping me away from a rig. But I am sure that soon the rains will be back and I'll be at the desk full time in the not too distant future. Then the good propagation will be a boon to keeping me from going cabin crazy. However, if the snow gets too deep I can always go XC skiing :) My ATS 3 can make contacts from an impromptu snow cave too. [Elecraft] K2/100: Do I have a ground loop??
Hi Group, Any advice appreciated about this strange issue affecting my K2/100? -: I recently started using my K2/100 with an external speaker. It is an unamplified, 4ohm speaker in an enclosure. I've noticed that on SSB, voice peaks cause some breakthrough of distorted audio on the external speaker. It's unobtrusive, but I notice it. It also occurs when I Tx into a dummy load and is at the same level as when I Tx into my antenna - ie it doesn't change. Now here's the strange thing: it's only present in the audio from the rear external speaker jack. If I plug headphones into the front panel headphone jack, there is no breakthrough heard on that audio signal. If I plug a set of headphones or a different speaker into the rear panel external speaker jack, I do hear the distorted audio signal on Tx in that audio path. My shack is clean with respect to common mode currents - I've checked every cable with my clip on meter. I suspect this is some kind of ground loop. Could it be occuring internal to the K2/100, somehow producing distortion in the external speaker audio pathway, but not the front panel headphone audio path?? That bit, I don't understand. Any ideas? Thanks as always!
