The question is about the KX1 for which no KX1 Utility program is
available, so you must use the paddle to input the CW messages. The K3
and KX3 will have added functionality from K3 (and KX3) Utility.

As an option, is it possible to store a "recorded" CW message via download from

Hi Paul,

That is correct.

Decoding from Morse sent via the internal keyer was pretty easy, since
the KX1 itself determines the length of dots/dashes/spaces in that

Re: [Elecraft] How is handkey plug wired for KX-1?

2011-12-19 Thread k7nhb
By "48 character display" I meant the 48 characters on the KX1's LED display
that the KX1 counts down from as cw characters are recorded in one of the
two memory buffers.

I see at the top of page 66 it says, " CW messages can only be recorded
using the KX1's internal Keyer." That apparently implies you must use a
paddle to record. You cannot use a straight key. I did plug in a paddle and
change input to Hnd as suggested. The KX1 would sound out the cw on the dot
side of the paddle but would not record. The same with CWtype. the KX1
would sound out the CW from it too, but not record.

So you can send with a straight key but you cannot record with a straight
key. How simple if they would have said that. It's too bad too - because if
you have messages stored in another keyer, you can't transfer them by simply
playing the message from the external keyer to the KX1 (I'm guessing the
same is true of the K1) via the input = Hnd setting.

If someone knows for sure, please confirm that you cannot record messages to
the KX1's memory with a straight key.

This came up because I was trying to put a message in by hand and knowing it
was being recorded, I wanted it to be perfect in characters and timing. I
kept making a mistake doing it with my paddle. I have more years with a
straight key and programs like CWType and an old Datang cw keyboard - but
apparently they won't help.

Paul

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in a CW pileup

2011-12-19 Thread Dave Hachadorian
Thanks to VE3KI, here is an easier procedure than the one I
posted a little while ago.

If you are on the receiving end of a CW pileup, with several loud
signals, it becomes difficult to separate them because the K3's
AGC compresses them together. You have to reach over and reduce
the RF gain to get everybody back on the linear part of the gain
curve.

You can very quickly reduce RF gain by hitting an F-Key on your
logging program. N1MM Logger is used as an example, but other
loggers can send commands too.

The command RG100; sets the K3's RF gain at 100. It can be any
number from 000 to 255. In N1MM, this is implemented by the
macro
{CAT1ASC RG100;}

You can put that macro in F-Key F12, or wherever, and press the
button if loud pileup shows up. That macro is for rig 1. Rig 2
would be the same, except use CAT2ASC.

After you work the loud guy, reach over and twiddle the RF gain
control on the K3 a little bit to restore RF gain to its previous
setting. You have plenty of time to do this while the "thank
you" message is playing.

I tried this method in the 160 contest Saturday, and it seemed to
work pretty well.

You can also use this method with AGC OFF, to keep loud signals
out of the AF Limiter.

The P3 current display will remain as-is. The SVGA option will allow
those who have been requesting a larger display screen to have their

[Elecraft] Monitor output on P3

2011-12-19 Thread Joe Word
Can we change the refresh rate that is sent to the monitor? The
default is 60 Hz on most video cards, but some people (me) can not use
a monitor at 60 Hz, it has to be 70 Hz or above.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 VGA output [monitor resolution thread closed]

2011-12-19 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Fortunately displaying the SVGA's output works well on non-native
resolution monitors with the P3's data. The blurring at non-native
resolutions usually is most apparent on small text and photos on PCs. In
the case of the P3, our text is much larger than that and the spectral
data looks great on non-native resolution monitors. We've tested this
with a number of monitors whose native resolution is different than the
resolution put out by the P3-SVGA adapter. It looks great.

That said, we plan add several additional monitor resolutions to the
core three currently supported. Also, this is firmware downloadable, so
if we find another resolution that is really needed, we can add it at
any time. (Thought it takes a new FPGA design for each resolution - we
store all of these FPGA images in on-board flash memory and load the
needed FPGA image for each resolution.

Please don't argue what is best here. We're just looking for a list to
use (and it looks like we have a good selection to pick from already -
thanks!)

So lets -close- this thread for now.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 VGA output

2011-12-19 Thread Bill K9YEQ
Jim.

I think it is fair that Elecraft look to newer equipment for developing
drivers, meaning stuff that is in the flat screen vintage and early in the
adaption of 3-5 years ago. Beyond that, I think the game becomes too
complex. This is the reason several of us have asked for more wide screen
support for monitors that were 19" and up for widescreen.

While we don't have unlimited resources for $'s to spend If one is to get
the adapter, unfortunately that may require more $'s to take advantage. I
don't find that I need a larger monitor as the P3 does what I need as is,
but may go ahead just for another toy. You know what I mean? I will get
the adapter and try it on one of my main screens and see if it is worth
buying the additional monitor. I have two now that are large, but are not
available for the single purpose of the P3 external display. Further, an
external display will take up more desk space. I can add the display via AB
switch, but this would only be on a momentary basis, as I use my displays
for business in my shack.

While it's important to support these 16:9 resolutions, it should be
remembered that many (most?) ham shacks utilize vintage gear re-purposed
from mainstream use. Until the last year or two, the computers in my shack
have been 6-8 year old laptops those that I used to use in my business, and
I'm still using slightly newer versions of the same type that I bought as
off-lease refurbs. Thus, while 4:3 display schemes may be disappearing from
NEW equipment, Elecraft is right to support them for compatibility with
older monitors. Indeed, the only problem I have right now with using a 10
year old 28-in LCD display originally bought for my biz is that it's too big
to fit in the available space above my operating desk.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 VGA output

2011-12-19 Thread Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF
Hi everyone,
Some people here seem to be losing sight (pun intended) of one of the
reasons for Elecraft offering and people buying the SVGA adaptor, that is so
that those people with poor eyesight can see the P3's display which due to
their eyesight can be rather difficult to see in waterfall mode. (Monochrome
mode will help a little)

I am one of those poorly sighted people and I can tell you that whilst all
my computer monitors here are LCD flat panels with a native resolution of
1440x900 (or significantly better) I operate every single one of them at
1024 x 768 (even on the widescreen monitors), simply because that is the
smallest that I can see unaided with any reliability.
A lot of people are in the same boat I believe.
My eye condition cannot be corrected by laser, spectacles or contacts, I
just have to live with my failing eyesight until I get new corneal grafts
which will give me another 5 to 10 years of sight.
(At least I can go back under the knife a few times to extend my 'sighted'
time which is some small comfort.)
I am looking forward to the availabilty of the SVGA adaptor but please Eric,
keep the 1024 x 768 resolution available. (Dare I ask for 800 x 600 too for
when my eyes have just about 'croaked'?) :-)

The key word is "native". LCDs, being digital, have a native
resolution, where each pixel to be displayed maps directly to a pixel
on the screen. Most monitors will find a way to display some
resolutions lower than their native one, but it may not look pretty
(either "blurry", or maybe not filling the entire screen).

The fix involves replacing some pins on both the main RF board and the
KPA3 board with gold-plated ones. It looks like a non-trivial
desoldering job, probably best done at the factory, unless you have
special tools and the skills to use them. Some have suggested contact
cleaner, but the one case of this problem that I've seen looked beyond
cleaning

[Elecraft] FW: P3 VGA output

2011-12-19 Thread Rick Bates

I'll politely disagree. I'm not a web designer but I know hams. If it
works, hams will retask it instead of tossing it. Web designers are more
concerned with the bleeding edge, not with getting the longest use from
existing hardware.

I have two 1024X768 monitors here, in use for many tasks, including
browsing. I still have one monitor that is a CRT (on my text
based IRLP system). While I've converted to laptops for most of my work,
the old desktops (down to three) still serve a function.

If it works well enough to do what you need, including energy costs, why
toss it?

However, I see no point in a P3 on CGA or an 800x600 display. ;-)

There is a wide variety of display ratios over the last couple decades (no
hard standards). It's not reasonable to require or request them all.
Going to HDTV standards was a wise move since the market is already there
and will be for a generation to come. Extra choices are gravy.

If my current monitor collection doesn't work for the P3, I'll go get
another HDTV and that'll give me more use (watch Jeopardy and the P3 using
PIP?) for near the same money. My laptops can use them too in native
1080p.

I'm pretty sure most frame grabbers are supplied with their own software
to do just that. I think the bigger issue would be what kind of screen

Re: [Elecraft] P3 birdies in display

2011-12-19 Thread n6wg

Hi Peter

Yes, I too have the "marching noise peaks", but mine go away when I disconnect
the antenna from my K3.

My problem is the pips that look just like a signal but move across the screen
at a either the same pace

as the cursor, or at some multiple of its pace.  I remember Eric saying that
these are harmonics from

internal oscillators in the K3.

I'm wondering if anyone has tackled the problem of reducing or eliminating
these "birdies".

thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas, Peter.

Hi Bob,

I
too have had noise peaks pass from left to right across the screen of
the
P3 leaving a diagonal waterfall trace.  First a small one, then one at
+40 dB above the reference level then another small
one, all moving slowly across the screen. Nothing is heard on the K3 and occurs
even when the P3 is disconnected from the K3 and is therefore
internally generated.
I cured the noise
peaks by ensuring all the case connections were clean, the fixing screws
reasonably tight and re
installed all of the ribbon and coax connectors in the P3.  The screws holding
the
display to the front panel made the most difference as I was careful not
to over tighten them originally !!

I also have re radiation of 19kHz noise on 2m that still comes and
goes even though I have filtered the supply lead.

While it's important to support these 16:9 resolutions, it should be
remembered that many (most?) ham shacks utilize vintage gear re-purposed
from mainstream use. Until the last year or two, the computers in my
shack have been 6-8 year old laptops those that I used to use in my
business, and I'm still using slightly newer versions of the same type
that I bought as off-lease refurbs. Thus, while 4:3 display schemes may
be disappearing from NEW equipment, Elecraft is right to support them
for compatibility with older monitors. Indeed, the only problem I have
right now with using a 10 year old 28-in LCD display originally bought
for my biz is that it's too big to fit in the available space above my
operating desk.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 VGA output

2011-12-19 Thread Doug Person
Eric,
Very few monitors today support 1024x768. 1280x1024 is rapidly becoming
obsolete. Useful native resolutions are 1366x768 - also known as 720p,
used widely in laptops and lower priced LCD TVs, 1440x900 and 1680x1050
(both used in higher end laptops and lower end LCD monitors). But,
having 1920x1080 is the most important because the overwhelming majority
of monitors and TVs sold today are at this native resolution (also known
as 1080I and 1080P). So you have the important one. I would go with
1366x768 as the next one to pick up. Lots of really inexpensive
monitors ($80-$90) available using this spec. I just picked up a 15.2"
Acer at WalMart to dedicate to this option for about $85 out the door.

Re: [Elecraft] How is handkey plug wired for KX-1?

2011-12-19 Thread Don Wilhelm
Paul,

Yes, to key the KX1 from a hand key or a properly working computer
keying circuit, you connect between the sleeve and the tip of the 1/8
inch stereo plug. Note that a mono plug will not work, it must be stereo.

I cannot equate the "48 character display" to a KX1 problem. That
sounds like a computer problem.

If you leave the KX1 set to HND and tap out CW on the dot paddle, does
your KX1 key properly? If so, then it should also key with your keying
interface.

When you send from CWType, what do you hear with the KX1 sidetone? That
should be what is being transmitted.

Forgive me for bringing up old stuff, but I've been out-of-touch for a
while, being a square-rig sailor with little or no internet access.

I see hints of an upgrade to the fastening of the power transformer to
make it less susceptible to vibration while being transported- is this
official, and what exactly is it?

And what's the current projected form factor for the KAT500? I'd like

We will be adding several more ranges in the wide screen format.

4. Its released for purchasing and production now. We will be adding it

[Elecraft] How is handkey plug wired for KX-1?

2011-12-19 Thread Paul
Most rigs that allow a hand key require it to be wired to a stereo plug
using the sleeve and tip only.
I use CWType software and that sends cw out a serial port to a simple
circuit with a switching transistor for on/off.
It works fine with other rigs.

However, when I plugged it into the KX-1, the 48 character index
wouldn't go down as it sent my message.
I could hear the CW from CWType so I know that was working. And if I
plug ina regular three wire paddle, and change the input from Hnd to
Pdn, the paddle works.

As CWType is sending, I can see the KX-1 LED's blink a little, but the
display stays on 48 characters.

I haven't found any words or wiring diagrams for a straight key; just
"... plug it in ..." so maybe if Hnd is selected as input, it expects
the ring connection to be shorted against the shaft; that is, a mono-plug.

And insights, advice as to why this software to serial port to switching
circuit to stereo plug with ring unused to KX-1 with input set to Hnd
wouldn't work.

Thank you and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA - Coming soon

2011-12-19 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Morning Fred,

When you see what appear to be the harmonics of WWV's audio tones, have you
tried reducing the level of the signal reaching the K3 - P3 (e.g. by turning
on the K3's ATT)? If ATT is switched ON, does the amplitude of each tone
harmonic seen decrease by the same amount (in db) as the tones themselves
and the carrier ?

This test would help to narrow the search for the source of tones'
harmonics, i.e. at WWV, or between WWV and your K3's attenuator, or
somewhere after your K3's attenuator.

Up to the time when I had some useful antennas, July 2011, I cannot recall
seeing any harmonic of WWV's tones when using WWV or WWVH to check the
frequency calibration of my Perseus SDR, even when WWV's carrier level was a
good S9 or higher.

Best wishes for Christmas, and a Happy New Year when it comes.

[Elecraft] [P3] P3+Microham USB III - 13.8v connection

2011-12-19 Thread Giuseppe Sorrentino
Hy to all, perhaps there's someone has already done this. I must wire the
microham usbIII interface to my K3/P3. Now i have the P3 that take the 13.8v
from the back of my K3 but also the interface has a cable to connect to that
jack on the back of K3. Is it a particular reason to leave the P3 cable on the
13.8 conn on the back of K3 and wire the microham to a power supply or nothing
particular???

Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA signal as a separate window with VGA2USB? (frame grabber...)

2011-12-19 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
My only problem with a dedicated screen is no room for anything really large,
but I might be able to get something around 15" behind the K3.
I already have a 24" iMac (personal) and two 19" screens (business connected to
PC) on my desk and can't figure out how I could get more desk space...

hmmm, a thought, switch the lounge and the study - hmmm station manager needs a
BIG xmas present :-)

I too will be interested in developments around this idea.

2011-12-19 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
That's interesting, especially for use with my Mac. I've asked the vendor the
question.
I would think using the higher ratio grabber would probably be required.

[Elecraft] P3SVGA signal as a separate window with VGA2USB? (frame grabber...)

2011-12-19 Thread John Ragle
Jan...

Your post is a very interesting one. Thank you! It looks to me like
the hard step will be "windowing" the frame that has been "grabbed."
Since you have obviously been following the P3SVGA thread, you know of
my interest in a windowed version of the P3 output. Many others have
written me privately (probably so as not to antagonize Elecraft), very
interested in the same idea. I already run 2 monitors (17", 24") on my
desk, so adding a 3rd one, dedicated *solely* to the P3, is not really a
comfortable option. Please keep me (us) abreast of this idea...

Ah - now, ~ $300 for the extra features I would definitely go for - especially
being able to use data mode via a keyboard (my CW is very ropey and S/K only at
present)

[Elecraft] P3SVGA signal as a separate window with VGA2USB?

2011-12-19 Thread Jan, SM5FQQ
Is it possible to use a VGA2USB device ,external frame grabber, connected to
your computer and to show the P3-signal as separate window on your monitor?
See http://www.vgacapture.com/

If it is possible does anyone know of a software to use to generate the
separate window?

Hehheh. Turn it on its side. One side makes it more challenging than the

I wonder when we will see the wider bandwidth option appear?

It would be nice to see the whole amateur band of interest to see quickly what
is happening on the CW and SSB portions of the band.
