Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB audio distorted. Realignment, MIC gain mod etc.

2012-01-04 Thread Andreas Hofmann
Don,

Your suggestions worked. I tucked the wires better away from the KSB2 and
replaced R2 back to its original value (VOX is now unusable, but I am fine with
it). The distortions are gone with SSBC 1-1 and signal gets a little distorted
with more compression but that is normal I think.

I noticed that there is quite a different of RF levels between different bands
with the same mike. I am considering doing the other SSB mods as you suggested
from http://www.qrpproject.de/Media/pdf/SSBModsUK.pdf. It seems that these mods
will help with the level difference on different bands.

Thank you so much for your help.

Andreas,

Yes, do tuck those cables up and away from the KSB2 board.

The value of R14 may be OK, but I worry about the 1k at R2, that should be 5.6k
so not to overdrive the balanced modulator. In addition to that, you might
also put a 2.2k resistor between U5 pins 1 and 2 (it is easiest to mount on the
carrier balance trimmer, it goes across the two outer leads - not the center
lead).

The VOX on the K2 is the one thing that is not the best. If you can use PTT
rather than VOX, you will obtain better performance.

Andreas,

I assume you have the internal Frequency Counter Probe that was
assembled during Assembly and Test Part II. That is the probe that
plugs into TP2 - the other end connects to the Control Board connector
on the top left corner.

blown) 20 meter mag loop that I built from 1.5" copper pipe, a Jennings

so far (confirmed) is UA1CE on 900 mw on 20M with my KX1 for about 6500
miles. The darn thing was sitting on my driveway about 3" off the

My personal findings: Superb receive antenna; lousy transmitting
antenna; highly directional; Incredibly quiet compared to my doublet;
extremely narrow bandwidth.

It's presently sitting in the garage. I haven't given up on it but I
much prefer my doublet and end fed half wave toys at this time.

But frankly, for someone - anyone - who has *severe* antenna
restrictions to contend with, the mag loop is most certainly worth
reading up on. It's not a toy!

Re: [Elecraft] Amazing!

2012-01-04 Thread Gary D Krause
Hi Mike,

That may be true, however, I don't use dipoles because, I can't. This is
where a mag loop has an advantage. I dipole needs to be up high and have two
supports unless set up as a inverted v. I don't have trees or towers in my
yard. My girlfriend has trees but, if I were to put up a dipole, I'm sure
there would be a knock on the front door. I can work multiple bands with a
mag loop without a tuner and the neighbors can't see it because, it's below
the fence line. I can also rotate it.

When I lived in another location, I had a tower. I had a rotatable dipole on
it. It worked great. I ended up using mostly inverted vee antennas because,
the wind didn't bother them as much and they didn't need to be rotated. Plus,
I didn't like climbing a tower. ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] Amazing!

2012-01-04 Thread stan levandowski
I have had some surprising results with a 40M mag loop I built from
hardline (real cheap) as well as an *all out* (that means big bucks
blown) 20 meter mag loop that I built from 1.5" copper pipe, a Jennings
vacuum variable, and a 1 rpm motor from Edmunds Scientific. My best DX
so far (confirmed) is UA1CE on 900 mw on 20M with my KX1 for about 6500
miles. The darn thing was sitting on my driveway about 3" off the
ground.

My personal findings: Superb receive antenna; lousy transmitting
antenna; highly directional; Incredibly quiet compared to my doublet;
extremely narrow bandwidth.

Ignacy, I agree. That's why I like mag loops. I've built three of them and
I'm getting ready to build a forth. They are quieter than my home brewed 30'

I will be a the Orlando Hamcation in Commercial Bldg. 3 Booth 304 with my new
switch box 6 rigs and relays to two amplifiers. The switch is designed
for 100 watts exciter RF power and as such there is not much chance of RF
coupling between rigs. I used a 100mw QRP watt meter connected to AMP 1
while driving AMP2 with 140 watts RF on 40 meters I couldn't see any
deflection of the QRP watt meter during this test. I will do more extensive
tests while I receive the production boxes. I have been using my prototype
switch (the one on my QRZ page with my K3, TS-520S, K2 and TS-870 for over a
year now without any RF issues. The new box is much more rugged than the
prototype.

You can see the prototype switch installed at W3JCB and AC4Q on their
respective QRZ pages. Both ops have had no problems with RF coupling.

Let me know if you have any further questions or comments.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB audio distorted. Realignment, MIC gain mod etc.

2012-01-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Andreas,

Yes, do tuck those cables up and away from the KSB2 board.

The value of R14 may be OK, but I worry about the 1k at R2, that should
be 5.6k so not to overdrive the balanced modulator. In addition to
that, you might also put a 2.2k resistor between U5 pins 1 and 2 (it is
easiest to mount on the carrier balance trimmer, it goes across the two
outer leads - not the center lead).

The VOX on the K2 is the one thing that is not the best. If you can use
PTT rather than VOX, you will obtain better performance.

The mag loop performance can be surprisingly good if the surrounding objects
are not attenuating. Excellent performance next to wooden objects, better
and quieter than a low dipole. Also multi band operation without a tuner.
But not good when surrounded by brick/concrete.

Interesting to see what one can still learn about the K2 after having had

I'd suggest trying a simple dipole. A 15m dipole is only 22 feet end-to-end,
and it is very easily set up almost anywhere. I was living in an apartment in
the 1980 and 1990 periods of solar activity, so I'd set up such an antenna on
the balcony, with a 10m element arranged "bow-tie" from the common center
insulator.

There's that K1 advantage...one of the few small QRP rigs that can perform on
15 meters (and higher, if you roll your own filter board).

I'd say that you are correct. The antenna you describe would be outclassed
on transmit and receive by a resonant dipole by several S-units at least.
Set up both at a location and experience the gross difference you'll get as
you switch from one to the other! Guaranteed!

Thank you very much for the information Don. I opened the rig and took a look

- I also see a mod where the audio line level is brought out to the rear

- R14 on the KSB2 board is 5.6K and R2 is 1K. I believe that means the

Andy,

I assume you have the K2/100 rather than the K2/10. The KPA100 can couple into
the KSB2 board giving audio distortion. Remove the right side panel and tuck
the ribbon cable and speaker cable up into the space between the KPA100 and the
top of the Control Board.

Mods to increase the mic gain have been several - change the value of resistor
R14 is the simplest, adding a mic preamp is a bit more involved, and for those
who want a bit better performance there is the KI6WX SSB Increased RF Gain mod.
If the latter is installed in a K2/100, changes to the KSB2 ALC circuit should
also be made - if you have a transistor added to your KSB2 near U5 (either on
the top or bottom of the board), then you have that mod installed - I can give
you the ALC changes that should be made.

Since you have an older KPA100, do you have the shield up to date? You should
have a shield on the speaker magnet, there should be clips on the shield and
there should be a direct connection between the top of the shield and the
SO-239 jack (that connection is usually made with 2 solder lugs connected
together).

Re: [Elecraft] How Long will it take to assemble a K3/100??

2012-01-04 Thread Barry N1EU
The YouTube video is cute but not sure it is really helpful.

What I did find helpful was the compilation of construction tips on the old
K3 Wiki, which has sadly been shut down.

[Elecraft] Amazing!

2012-01-04 Thread Iain
Indeed,

I think if you compared the difference in db in sensitivity of a normal
rig compared to an elecraft, BOTH WAYS would equal quite a large beam
antenna in gain.

[Elecraft] Amazing!

2012-01-04 Thread Gary D Krause
I thought I would share my story of what happened over the holidays. I live
in Cheyenne, Wyoming but, spent most of the week before the new year in Fort
Collins, CO. My girlfriend lives there. We have been dating for about seven
years now and she suggested that I bring one of my HF rigs and operate from
her house. I don't know why I had never thought of that before.

I took my K2 and a home brewed magnetic loop antenna. The mag loop is about
three feet in diameter and sits three feet off the ground. I set it up in her
back yard which is pretty much surrounded east and west by her house and the
neighbors house. I operated mostly 15 meters and some 17 meters at 5 watts
QRP.

One morning I fired up the K2, set it for 5 watts and started calling CQ. A
faint signal came back. It was a ham in Scotland!!! For those of you that
have beams, it's probably no big deal. We were both running 5w and he was
using a K1. I also worked two French stations that morning, all QRP with a
mag loop three feet off the ground.

I know that most of it has to do with propagation and the antenna. In this
case mostly propagation. At least that's what all the books say. Theory,
theory, theory. I say to heck with theory! I experienced something beyond
theory! It was MOJO!!! So stick that in your theory pipe and smoke it. ;-)

Why is it that when I'm working with my K2 or K3, most of the responding
stations are also using an Elecraft rig? MOJO! MOJO! MOJO! That's my theory.

Gary, N7HTS

modern metric with old english measurements. NOW - it is what it is! Mil/Mille
means 1000. the rest is just convention.

Re: [Elecraft] Trying to get to grips with the KDSP2 Filter

2012-01-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ray,

Think about how you are going to operate with data modes, and how you
have the RTTY filter set aligned (or will align it) - that will tell you
how to set the KDSP2 RTTY parameters.
If you will always use the full SSB filter width passband when using
digital modes, perhaps the RTTY filters that are set as default are OK
for you.
My recommendation is that you set the RTTY IF filters to widths of OP1,
1.00, 0.70, and 0.40. Set the passband for the OP1 filter the same as
you have for SSB, and center the passband for the more narrow filters at
1000 Hz.
Then set the center frequency of the KDSP2 filters to 1000 Hz.

In use, tune the desired signal to the vicinity of 1000 Hz in the
waterfall display so you can switch in the narrow IF filters and/or the
DSP filters to reduce QRM.

Why choose 1000 Hz for the center (you might ask) - well, the K2 BFO has
enough range to allow that frequency, but not much higher. Also, MMTTY
has a mark frequency setting of 910 Hz that works with that center
frequency.

Good morning Igor,

You are correct, to a point.

When you have a thousand units of weight, in Spanish, you do NOT say you
have "Kilo Kilos of X". You say you have "mil kilos of X".

Likewise, when you travel a thousand units of distance, in Spanish, you do
NOT say "Kilo Kilometros", You say "mil Kilometros".

Milli is used as a prefix for terms to indicate 10 to the minus 3rd, but mil
is used as a separate word to indicate 10 to the 3rd.

We humans have sure messed up the pure Adamic language, in multiple
variations.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 4MHz Adjust...

2012-01-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
I suggest you use the N6KR method to set the 4 MHz reference
oscillator. Refer to my website www.w3fpr.com article on K2 Dial
Calibration. Note that the actual frequency may not be at 4 MHz.

You may use any AM station that has a known carrier frequency rather
than WWV. If you use a standard station that transmits only a carrier,
you will still have to use SSB mode, but switch to CW to adjust the
pitch equal to your sidetone pitch.

[Elecraft] K2 4MHz Adjust...

2012-01-04 Thread EB1TR
Hello to all, this week (my last hollidays week) I thought it would be a good
idea to adjust the oscillator 4MHz my K2.

I performed the steps as it is described in several ways but the result is
always the same.

40 meters LSB 200Hz shift
40 meters USB 1.5KHz shit

In other bands the results are always similar. Any ideas?
